When actress Brittany Murphy mysteriously died in her bathroom on Dec. 20, the 32-year-old actress left a mountain of debt behind her, a friend of the actress’ divulged in the Jan. 18 issue of The National Enquirer.
“Brittany died practically penniless. And now her husband wants to sell her possessions quickly, while her mother is shell-shocked over the death.”

Brittany — who once starred in box office hits like 8 Mile and Girl Interrupted — had seen her fortunes fade in recent years and hadn’t had any substantial roles, or paychecks, in ages.
“She was the breadwinner. She had to take out a $500,000 second mortgage on the house she paid $4 million for in 2003, but when property values plummeted, she found herself upside down on the property.”
The spunky Clueless star allegedly owed more money than the 8,000 square-foot, 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom Bevery Hills home is worth. And questions about how to settle Brittany’s estate has driven a wedge between Brittany’s husband, out-of work screenwriter Simon Monjack, and her beloved mother, Sharon — the beneficiary of the actress’ 2007 will.
“A war has exploded over the estate, and there’s a lot of tension between them,” the tipster told the tab. “Poor Sharon can barely function, let alone think about selling the house or getting Brittany’s finances in order,”> said the source. “But Simon is already pushing to sell Brittany’s possesions, including jewelry, clothes, and the house. Sharon is appalled by his insensitivity.”
