Wanuri Kahiu, director of the award-winning movie, From A Whisper, has once again come up with a winning film–a sci-fi short film, ‘Pumzi (‘air’ or ‘breathe‘ in Kiswahili).
The film shows a world after World War III, the ‘Water War’, where everyone is stuck in an enclosed community with their movements and thoughts closely monitored. An East African woman dares to defy the odds and flee the community in the hopes of re-establishing and restoring life outside the confines of the walls.
Pumzi will be showing at the Sundance Festival from January 22-30, 2010 and was one of 200 films picked for exhibition from 9,000 submissions. For details and programming information, visit the Sundance Festival website.
