Deploying to Afghanistan

A few months ago I got a phone call that changed my life forever. A very serious sounding man on the other end, asking for me, then saying “Lieutenant Kalman…you’ve been tagged for mobilization and you’re going to Afghanistan.”

It’s the kind of call other reservists like me don’t always want to get. Some even fear it. It definitely gave me chills. Not because I was scared, but because I had never felt that kind of honor or pride.

Before you go to war, you have to go through combat training. That’s where I am now, getting “educated” at FT Dix New Jersey. It’s like Army boot camp here, minus the marching and the folding. The rest of it – the weapons training and learning how to save lives – well, that’s the real deal.

This next year will be one incredible journey, and I’ll bring you along with me every step of the way. Welcome to FOX on the Frontlines.
