Laser Tracker ION Sales in Aerospace and Energy Sectors

Coventry, 20th January 2010 – FARO, the world’s leading provider of portable measurement and imaging solutions, announced that they have sold several units of their latest 3D measurement system – the FARO Laser Tracker ION

The portable measurement systems have been purchased by companies from the growing Aerospace and Power Generation industries. One of the companies which has acquired the new system is Brookhouse Tooling Limited, a major Aerospace supplier with supply positions on many key aircraft programme’s.
They will use the ION to check Aerospace tooling and fixtures as well as alignment of composite lay up tools. Angus Fielden, Quality Manager at Brookhouse Tooling Limited explains why the company decided for FARO’s system: “Having purchased a FaroArm Quantum in December 2008, FARO have shown true commitment to their customer’s requirements. Not only do they strive to achieve affordability, but the accuracy, quality of product and outstanding level of customer service grows better year by year. In 2009, a difficult year for all, FARO have supported above and beyond expectation, and excelled throughout.”

Another customer who is convinced by the outstanding performance of the ION is Drax Power Limited, the owner and operator of Drax Power Station, the largest, cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power station in the UK. According to Turbine Engineer Steve Austin, the laser tracker will be employed to reduce the duration of maintenance outages on its steam turbines, whilst offering a significant improvement in accuracy.

The FARO Laser Tracker ION features a longer measurement range, lighter weight, and contains the fastest, most sophisticated distance measuring system: Agile Absolute Distance Meter. Specifically, the ION has improved the volumetric accuracy by 27% over the previous model to .002” at 33 feet. The measurement diameter range has been extended by 36% to 361 feet, and the weight has decreased by 12% to 39lbs.

“At FARO, our goal is to continuously provide advanced solutions that empower our customers,” stated David Homewood, Area Vice President of Sales for the UK, France and Benelux. “Those sales are proofing that we’re meeting the requirements of the market with the ION. It is the ideal tool for anybody who needs to carry out quick and precise measurements – especially for large parts and composites and especially in difficult environments. We are very confident that the ION will continue to be a success on the UK market.”
