It’s hard to believe Elton has been making music for more than 45 years now, and even though he may have slowed down with age, there is just so much of his good music out there.
With so many of his hits available, it’s easy to pick one of his smash hits, so sometimes it’s well worth it to find something among his lesser songs that still stands up when measured against those hits, and this is one of those songs.
This is from Elton’s fourth studio album, a follow up to the immensely successful ‘concept’ album, ‘Tumbleweed Connection’. Although well received, the two albums prior to ‘Tumbleweed’ did not sell all that well, and even thogh now both have sold well, it was mainly from the strength of ‘Tumbleweed’ and people then buying his earlier albums. He has been a most prolific artist, producing one and on many years two new studio album each year from that first album, ‘Empty Sky’ in 1969 until 1989, and when Film scores, live albums and compilations are added, it was almost two albums a year.
Elton answered an ad in an English Music magazine NME (New Musical Express) in 1966, and lyricist Bernie Taupin also answered the same ad. The pair were introduced, and have stayed together making their music ever since. Prior to that Elton had actually done recording session work, most notably with the Hollies.
Elton has sold more than 250 million records, he’s had 56 Top 40 hits, 16 Top Ten Hits, and Nine Number One Hits. His Opus Double album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ is a 7 times Platinum album, and one song from that, Candle In The Wind’ has sold nearly 40 million copies on its own. He has made 30 Studio albums, 4 Live Albums, 6 Film and Theater Scores, and 14 Compilation albums.
He has won 5 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and also a Tony Award.
This song, ‘Tiny Dancer’ is from that ‘Madman Across The Water’ album., and even though the album did not sell all that well on original release it also has also gone 2 times Platinum. This song was written for Bernie Taupin’s girlfriend at the time, Maxine, who later married Taupin. On original single release, the song charted only on an average scale, and didn’t really make it into the Top 40. In later years it has become one of the most requested of all Elton’s songs, and in fact, made it to Number 387 in the 2004 Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest songs of all time.
The length of the song on original release meant it was not received well on radio where they virtually demanded short hit single to play.
Just prior to releasing this studio album, Elton wrote a score for a cute and quite obscure film released in 1971, that film called ‘Friends’, and the album soundtrack, although hard to come by is one sought after by Elton John fans.
One of the songs from that film score is ‘Seasons’, and this is the link to that song. No live recording of it exists, so this song has been overlaid with some wonderful still images to best highlight the beauty of the song.
