This year, the team members representing Pierce College Puyallup are Lauren Adler and Alfredo Tabulina.
Lauren Adler
Lauren Adler, 21, of Puyallup, is passionate about politics and she lives that passion through service. She is currently the vice president for Government Concerns at Pierce Puyallup and she chairs the campus election committee. She has also served on several local political campaigns. She plans to earn her associates degree at Pierce and later a bachelors degree in political science. Her career goal is to work in public service or public relations.
Alfredo Tabulina
Sixteen years after dropping out of high school to support a young wife and baby, Alfredo Tabulina, 34, of Olympia, found himself divorced and laid off from his job. With few prospects in a down economy, Alfredo started taking high school completion courses at Pierce College Puyallup. He is now working towards an associates degree while serving as the president of the colleges PTK chapter and district vice president for the Greater Northwest Region. Alfredo is not only the first in his family to earn a college degree, hes earning it with honors.
Both Lauren and Alfredo, by virtue of their inclusion on the state team, will receive $750 scholarships from Key Bank and the National Education Loan Association, and they are now nominated for the 2010 All-USA Academic Team. Officials from Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, will select students for the All-USA team.
