Man pleads not guilty in dog’s attack on wife

An Algonquin man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to allegations he ordered his trained German shepherd guard dog to attack his wife during a domestic dispute at the couple’s home late last year.

Jonathon Richard, 29, of the 100 block of Mohawk Trail, also asked for a jury trial on charges of aggravated battery, unlawful restraint, domestic battery and obstructing justice stemming from the early December incident that police said left his wife hospitalized briefly with superficial bite wounds.

The dog, a male German shepherd named Falco, later was killed when Richard’s father was involved in a four-vehicle crash near Prairie Grove after he picked up the animal from McHenry County Animal Control.

Richard, who is free after posting $3,100 bond, could face a maximum five years in prison if found guilty of all charges. He is scheduled to return to court March 31.
