Simon Wants Lady Gaga As Mentor On “American Idol” Season 9; Hopes For Taylor Swift-Esque Winner

American Idol just finished selecting the Top 24 — and Simon Cowell is already talking about what he’d like to see during his final season on the TV talent show.

“I think we should have Lady Gaga,” Cowell told reporters on a Thursday afternoon conference call. “She is the most relevant pop artist in the world at the moment… and I’ve met her and she’s very smart. I like her.”

The judge also revealed that he thinks one of the 12 female semifinalists should surge to the top in his final season with the show

“We’ve had a few years of guys winning the show and I would say there is definitely a better chance of a girl winning the show this year, certainly than last year. I would love to find a Taylor Swift. Somebody who’s relevant rather than a contest winner.”

Simon will leave Idol at the end of the current season to concentrate on creating an American version of his UK hit, The X Factor.
