Homeless man found sleeping in dining room of home

ELGIN (STMW)  — Police arrested a man found sleeping in an abandoned home in northwest suburban Elgin Friday morning.

Jacob N. Munoz, 51, who is homeless, was found sleeping in the dining room of a home the 200 block of Villa Place, according to police, which said the house had been red tagged.

Munoz was arrested under a city ordinance on occupying a red tagged house, reports stated.

In an unrelated incident, a real estate agent preparing to show an apartment in the 300 block of Raymond Street to prospective renters discovered someone entered the home and had been living there, police said.

The squatters left behind belongings including toiletries, clothing and garbage, reports stated. The stove was left on, and someone had burned the wood floor with cigarettes, which were left discarded in the apartment, police said. A few small items were stolen.

Also found at the scene was a substance believed to be an illegal drug, according to reports. Police are investigating the incident as a burglary.
