“How To Train Your Dragon” Tops Weekend Box Office With $43.3 Million

The boom of 3D movies continued to dominate the box office as How to Train Your Dragon breathed fire and ended up top of the heap at theaters this weekend. The DreamWorks animated film (which features voiceover work by America Ferrera, Gerard Butler, and late night host Craig Ferguson) took in $43.3 million at the domestic box office in its debut weekend.

In recent months, the 3D movies Alice in Wonderland and Avatar have dominated the charts. In fact, the 3D boom is largely responsible for the increase in movie ticket prices. Theaters across the country are hoping to cash in on the litany of high-tech flicks headed to screens this summer. Another major 3D movie, Clash of the Titans, starring Avatar’s Sam Worthington, is due out this week.

Alice in Wonderland, which had been No. 1 the previous three weekends, slipped to second place with $17.3 million. John Cusack’s new comedy Hot Tub Time Machine — the best thing to happen to 1986 since Alf – opened third with $13.7 million
