Spurrier’s new year resolution: “Be a jerk”

Steve Spurrier may be feeling the heat in Columbia as he enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Gamecocks. Not only is he resuming the playcalling duties full-time, but he’s also promising to be more of a jerk:

“I’m going to yell and scream and be a jerk,” said Spurrier, who was known for throwing his visor at Florida. “I hope one or two players say, ‘That Coach Spurrier is yelling at us all the time.’ Nobody has said that lately. I’m going to try and be a little bit more of a jerk to some guys, because we’ve put up with too much soft play, put up with pitiful effort by some guys and put up with just not good team play.”

ESPN says Spurrier has had the best five-year run of any South Carolina coach with 35 wins, but the USC faithful haven’t quite forgiven the Ol Ball Coach for the 20-7 rout UConn laid on the Gamecocks in the Papajohns.com Bowl.

Spurrier has taken the Gamecocks to five straight bowl games… but they’ve lost four out of five. The OBC gave South Carolina a new swagger… but they’ve lost three out of five to Clemson under Spurrier.

Spurrier resuming playcalling is a promising sign, but if South Carolina doesn’t fare better after a few tossed visors… the “year of the jerk” may by Spurrier’s last in Columbia.
