Official: GM’s OnStar will bring Google technology to the Chevy Volt

GM Google OnStarAs we said it last week in this post, GM made it official today and announced that its OnStar telematics unit will now bring Google mobile navigation technology into your car.

The first drivers who will get this technology are Chevrolet Volt drivers who use smartphones featuring Google’s Android operating system. These people will connect their phones to pinpoint their vehicle’s location on Google Maps. This will act as a navigation system and guide the driver to the destination using turn-by-turn spoken directions. The application will work on the Motorola Droid, which is an Android phone, as well as on Blackberry Storm and the Apple iPhone and it will be available when the Chevrolet Volt will go on sale this fall! “While OnStar will never lose sight of our core focus on safety and security, this relationship is an example of how we’re evolving our leadership position in connected vehicle technology,” said Chris Preuss, OnStar president. “What we’re talking about today is only the beginning.”
