Echinacea belongs to the daisy (Compositae) family, and the nine North American species of these perennial wildflowers have a widespread distribution over prairies, plains and wooded areas. First used by Native Americans in the Central Plains states to treat a variety of illnesses, from respiratory and digestive problems to snakebite and blood poisoning, the scientific properties of Echinacea were first studied by German scientists in the 1930s, with the result that it is now one of the leading phytomedicines used in Germany. In the US, it is estimated that around 10% of the population have used it at some point to fight a cold, and its annual sales of an estimated US$300 million is second only to St. John’s Wort.
The Echinacea species are rich in bioactive metabolites of which lipophilic alkamides, water-soluble phenolic compounds (mainly caffeic acid derivatives) and polysaccharides are the most recognized for their immunomodulatory properties. recent research focuses on the caffeic acid derivatives. Caffeic acid derivatives are good antioxidants in cell-free free radical generation systems and echinacoside.
