New Member Hello

I wanted to say hello. I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2003. My blood glucose at the time was 503. Being stubborn and not wanting to take medications, I went with exercise, diet and supplementation and eventually maintained an A1c in the 5s for about a year and a half.

Then I slid down the slippery slope of lack of discipline and denial. This November my wife took me to the emergency room as I was an inch away from a coma with DKA. My blood glucose was over 600 and my A1c was 12.5. I also had pnemonia and H1N1.

I spent 9 days in the hospital, lost 23 pounds during the whole sickness and came home on insulin. Lantus for my basal and Novolog for my meals. What a change. No more breakfasts of 2 moon pies and 4 hot dogs.

The insulin seems to be working and my control is better than it has ever been. I am curious if there are any other diabetics that have never experienced a hypoglycemic episode. My blood glucose has never been able to go low enough to trigger one. Even on the insulin, with 3 meals per day and no snacks, which is a suprise to me.

I am told I will always need insulin, but I am not so sure. I have noticed that this forum is full of great information and have learned much already. I look forward to learning more and contributing as well.
