I’ve managed to survive 43 years of a highly labile case of type 1 diabetes. I can’t really tell the exact extent of my diabetic complications, since I developed a rare autoimmune disease a few years ago which quickly produces some complications quite similar to those of diabetes, so the later condtion masks the effects of the former.
I am a university medical researcher, and so I naturally have a strong interest in the science of diabetes and its treatment. I am concerned with the growing gap between what is being discovered and discussed among medical scientists about diabetes and what general practitioners and the general public believe about the disease, and I hope that this situation improves in the future.
