January stinks!

Why is it that every January I have problems with the old T1? For many years I had no clue what I was doing with diabetes management so nothing consistently worked. But for the last few years now I’ve been doing really well. I understand how this all works to a very high standard (IMO) and I manage to deal with it very well.

Except when the weather gets cold. It is now officially a pattern. During January / early Feb, the wheels come off the wagon. My basal needs seem to change daily and there isn’t much I can do about it that I can see besides blood test and constantly correct with either insulin or a snack.

Basal testing would be my first port of call with this, but here’s the thing. I only have about 12u of basal a day, and around 50% of this daily dose comes between 3am and 9am. This is a management regime that works at any other time of year… I can eat a decent, varied diet, have few hypos and have an HBA1c of high 5’s / low 6’s. I’m a happy chap with it.

At this time of year I am waking up having clearly needed another 2 units in the night (i.e a 33% rise in those dawn hours in basal needs). Other days, I’m waking up just peachy. This is with going to bed at a civilised number.

So I guess what you could say is that at this time of year my DP varies hugely from day to day. I can’t manage it by raising basals as on the days where it doesn’t do it I wake up at a decent low number as I do the rest of the year….

Any suggestions as to what I can do other than ride it out? I know that in another few weeks it’ll be gone.

PS – I’ve tried multiple sites, different bottle of insulin etc. Only thing consistent here is that this happened last January and the one before that and on both occasions the problems fixed themselves after a month or so 🙁
