Hollywood kills another classic: A big screen version of the 1960’s TV classic Gilligan’s Island is reportedly in the works.
The show — which spawned the 1978 TV movie Rescue From Gilligan’s Island — centered on the exploits of seven shipwrecked castaways deserted on an uncharted and uninhabited island in the Pacific.
The sitcom, which ran on CBS from 1964 to 1967, is being developed for the big screen by Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment. Producers say the proposed movie, still in preproduction, will take a contemporary look at the classic series.
“The characters are so good,” producer Charles Roven told Variety on Wednesday. “We think it’s going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day.”
Gilligan’s Island ended in April 1967 with the castaways still stranded after the show wasn’t renewed for a fourth season.
