Compact encoders for the packaging industry

POSITAL’s OPTOCODE encoders for EtherNet/IP- and PROFINET IRT networks are ideally suited for use in packaging applications, e.g. in packaging lines, cartoning machines or brick packing machines. With a diameter of merely 58 mm and a standardized design, the units can be easily integrated into machines and plants with little installation space. Preassembled connection cables ensure fast and easy installation. Both encoder types can be used in high-speed packaging machines: the EtherNet/IP models feature an Ertec200-based platform and reach cycle times of less than 10 ms, while the PROFINET IRT models support IRT, RT and NRT data transfer (isochronous real-time / real-time / non-real-time) according to the V4 encoder profile, reaching cycle times as low as 1 ms (IRT) and 10 ms (RT). The devices are equipped with six status LEDs which allow for quick bus diagnosis.

The encoders do not require any terminating resistors or switches for address allocation or Baud rate setting. They feature two M12 two M12 connections for data transfer and one M12 connection for voltage supply. Like all OPTOCODE encoders, they use a proven opto-electronic scanning method to record position values. The single-turn sensor provides a resolution of 16 bit per revolution. Additionally, a maximum of 16.384 revolutions (14 bit) can be registered in multi-turn mode, thereby covering a measuring range of 30 bit. All OPTOCODE encoders operate without backup batteries and instantly provide current absolute position values without referencing even after power failure. Optionally, all encoder models are also available as stainless steel versions. Additionally, POSITAL also supplies encoders suitable for use in explosive atmospheres or mining applications. The company, which has been developing and manufacturing Ethernet encoders since 2001, has received certifications for the EtherNet/IP and PROFINET IRT encoders from the Open DeviceNet Vendors Association (ODVA) and the PROFIBUS User Organization (PNO) respectively.
