American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi is throwing her support behind her father’s bid to become the newest U.S. Senator from New York. Former Republican congressman Joe DioGuardi, 69, is expected to formally throw his hat into the ring in Grand Central Terminal on Tuesday. The conservative has not held a public office since losing his seat to Nita Lowery in 1988, but Kara is hopeful her dad will defeat fellow Republican challengers Bruce Blakeman and David Malpass in the primary.

“He’s my father, and of course I’m supportive of him. He always encouraged me in my dreams,” said the award-winning songwriter, who would not reveal her party affiliation. “We don’t always agree on every issue. But no matter what our differences are, I love him. He has more energy than anyone I know. When he is working, he is Superman.”
