A San Marino man is in custody after he allegedly stabbed a police dog and set his upscale home on fire, authorities said.
The incident took place Saturday morning in the tony L.A. suburb. According to San Marino police, officers came to the home of David Pohung Liu on a burglary alarm report. Liu allegedly attacked the dog and told officers to shoot him, police said.
A five-hour standoff ensued. Officer noticed smoke and flames coming from the home, and authorities used pepper ball rounds to capture Liu.
Officials told the Star-News that they can’t explain Liu’s motive and are still investigating the incident. The paper reported that the police dog, a Belgian Malinois named Rik, is expected to fully recover.
