The FSF recently announced its annual Advancement of Free Software award to John Gilmore. John Gilmore was the co-founder of Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and one of the first employees at Sun.
Free software has been very good to me, and I’m glad that I have been good to it.
He is also said to have coined,
The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.
Gilmore was awarded for the promotion of Free Software and his work on protecting it. The EFF founded by Gilmore has extensively promoted projects like the GNU Tar, the GNU Debugger, GNU Radio and GNU Gnash. Gilmore has also co-founded the DHCP protocol. He also owns the domain of toad.com which is one of the 100 oldest in the world.
Other awards given was the Project of Social Benefit Award to the Internet Archive which archives and aggregates news from various sources. It archives old web pages for future reference.
The Advancement of Free Software is extremely prestigious in the world of Free Software and John Gilmore has been rightfully recognized.
