Hyundai introduced its 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged gasoline direct-injection (GDI) engine in the 2011 Sonata at the NYIAS event today, revealing the new powerplant is capable of delivering an estimated 34 mpg highway rating, and 274 horsepower.
According to the carmaker, the new Sonata is the first Hyundai vehicle to have both GDI technology and a turbocharger. The power unit is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control.
