An online British game retailer has recently announced that it officially and legally owns the soul of 7,500 people who made any form of online purchase at their website. They are basing this claim on a clause added to their license agreement which gives control of a customer’s soul over to GameStation.
The exact clause says,
By placing an order via this Web site on the first day of the fourth month of the year 2010 Anno Domini, you agree to grant Us a non transferable option to claim, for now and for ever more, your immortal soul. Should We wish to exercise this option, you agree to surrender your immortal soul, and any claim you may have on it, within 5 (five) working days of receiving written notification from gamesation.co.uk or one of its duly authorised minions.
This was an April Fool’s joke. The term of soul ownership was added on the 1st of April. It clearly proves that no-one reads the license agreement. Also, there was another checkbox to opt-out; only 22% of the total people clicked it. Surprisingly, this led them to a £5 discount.
To further clarify the customer’s position in this, the company will e-mail clients and tell them the truth about this being a joke.
