  • Pandas leave D.C., Atlanta for new homes in China

WASHINGTON — Two giant pandas born in American zoos were headed to China by special cargo jet Thursday to become part of a breeding program in their endangered species’ native land.

Three-year-old Mei Lan (pronounced MAY-lahn) of Zoo Atlanta and 4½-year-old Tai Shan (TY-shawn) of the National Zoo in Washington were loaded into travel crates for their long flight to new homes in Sichuan.

Zookeepers fed Tai Shan apple and pear slices by hand through bars in his shipping crate before he left for Dulles International Airport early Thursday in a caravan escorted by U.S. Park Police. He munched calmly and looked out through clear plastic windows.

In Atlanta, Mei Lan could be seen pacing rapidly back and forth before her crate was lifted into the belly of a FedEx freighter for a flight to Washington, where she will join Tai Shan for the China trip aboard another Boeing 777 with a panda painted on the side.

It’s a day panda lovers have been dreading.

“He’s our success story,” 37-year-old Deanna Williston said of Tai Shan. During a Wednesday visit to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, she recalled tracking his growth from the size of a stick of butter to nearly 200 pounds.

She knitted a panda hat based on Tai Shan’s picture and wears it for good luck when there might be another panda pregnancy.

Pandas have a long, symbolic history in Washington. The first panda couple, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, arrived in 1972 as a gift to the American people from China after President Richard Nixon’s historic visit.

The pair lived more than 20 years at the zoo and produced five cubs — but none survived.

That’s partly why Tai Shan, the first cub to grow up in the nation’s capital, is so adored.

“All the other pandas we’ve borrowed from China, but he’s ours,” said Amanda Parson, 30, of Beltsville, Md., who visited the zoo in the snow Wednesday with Williston for Tai Shan’s last day on view.

The zoo’s two remaining pandas, mother Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) and father Tian Tian (tee-YEN tee-YEN), are on a 10-year, $10 million loan until December. Veterinarians hope Mei Xiang may be pregnant after a recent artificial insemination.

Tai Shan gave his mother a few sniffs Wednesday through a fenced window between their separate yards.

Friday’s panda handover comes amid tense U.S.-China relations because of a recently announced U.S. arms sale to Taiwan and a potential meeting between President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama.

But pandas are goodwill ambassadors, said Robert A. Pastor, professor of international relations at American University. He said “warm and close relationships” can help counterbalance times of tension.

“So people-to-people or animal-to-animal exchanges are an essential dimension to the relationship,” he said.

For animal keeper Nicole Meese, Tai Shan’s departure is personal. She first held him as a baby and spent late nights calling him when he learned to climb trees but wouldn’t come down.

“Every day, he makes me smile,” said Meese, who will travel to China with the pandas aboard the FedEx jet. “I’m going to miss him terribly.”

To help ease the transition from English to Chinese, Meese trained Tai Shan, whose name means “peaceful mountain,” with hand signals. She spent weeks putting together a photo booklet of the signals for his new keepers in China.

Chinese zookeepers are advertising for a tutor to provide language lessons for Mei Lan to understand her handlers.

The female panda, whose name means “Atlanta beauty,” was the first cub born at Zoo Atlanta. Her arrival in 2006 brought thousands more visitors to the zoo and millions of clicks to an online panda cam.

Since then, her parents, Lun Lun (LOON LOON) and Yang Yang (YAHNG YAHNG), had another cub — Xi Lan (SHE LAHN) — a male born in 2008.

Tuners typically roll out one package at a time. When a big tuner show like SEMA comes around, maybe a couple at a time. But Japanese tuning firm Wald International is launching five body kits for some of the most desirable top-of-the-line luxury sedans, all at the same time.

Included in Wald’s plans are aero kits for the Rolls-Royce Ghost, Porsche Panamera, Infiniti M, Jaguar XJ and BMW 7 Series. Throw in a Quattroporte, Mercedes CLS, maybe a Bentley and the Aston Martin Rapide in there and they’d have the whole kit and kaboodle covered. Not much in the way of details available as of yet on this quintet of modified luxury wheels, but from the looks of it, each has been lowered and mounted with new front fascias, side skirts and big ol’ alloys. Check ’em out for yourself below.

  • Here’s Why The Unemployment Rate Dropped Even Though We Lost Jobs

    Employment To Population

There were some positive signs in today’s jobs report–and they weren’t just some definitional b.s. pumped out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    Calculated Risk explains:

A common question is: how could there be fewer payroll jobs, but the unemployment rate declined? This is because the data comes from two separate surveys. The unemployment Rate comes from the Current Population Survey (CPS: commonly called the household survey), a monthly survey of about 60,000 households.

The jobs number comes from Current Employment Statistics (CES: payroll survey), a sample of approximately 400,000 business establishments nationwide.

The establishment survey showed a loss of 20,000 payroll jobs in January, but the household survey showed an increase in the employment level of 541,000. The number to use for jobs is the establishment survey, but the unemployment number is based on the household survey and the surveys can diverge over the short period, but over time this will work out (for more on the differences, see: Jobs and the Unemployment Rate).

  • Ferrari Have No Clue on F10 Performance Level

Ferrari have undoubtedly become the hit of the day in Formula One, as the Italian team dominated the Valencia test meeting from one point to another earlier this week. Both Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso posted fastest lap times throughout the days they took the Ferrari F10 to the track, with the latter also scoring the best lap time of the week at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.

  • Hubble sees Pluto changing color, ice sheet cover

WASHINGTON — Newly released Hubble Space Telescope photos show Pluto is changing color and its ice sheets are shifting.

    That’s got astronomers surprised.

The photos paint a Pluto that is significantly redder than it had been for the past several decades.

To the layman, it has a yellow-orange hue, the color of molasses, but astronomers say it has about 20 percent more red than it used to have.

The pictures show nitrogen ice growing and shrinking, getting brighter in the north and darker in the south.

Astronomers say Pluto is changing more than the surfaces of other bodies in the solar system.

That’s surprising because a season lasts 120 years in some regions of Pluto.

Once considered a planet, Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet by astronomers in 2006.

  • Police car crashes with Lexus in north suburb

WILMETTE, Ill. — Lake Avenue at Hunter Road in north suburban Wilmette remained close to traffic Thursday morning following a crash between a police squad car and a Lexus sports utility vehicle.

Police authorities expected the intersection to be closed until about 12:30 p.m. as they complete their investigation of the accident, which happened at 9:21 a.m.

The Wilmette police officer who was driving the patrol car east on Lake was transported to a local hospital, Sgt. Michael McGarry said.

McGarry said he was told the officer was “semi-concious” after the collision and possibly suffering from broken ribs.

The woman driving the navy blue Lexus RX 400 south on Hunter was alone in the vehicle and did not need to be taken to the hospital.

Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the crash.

Traffic is detoured off Hunter at Shiller Avenue and Iroquois Road.

  • Copyright Industry Responds To iiNet Ruling By Asking For Gov’t Bailout; Aussie Gov’t ‘Studying’ It

So, the Australian court ruling in favor of iiNet was quite brilliant, not just in getting the technology and the law (and common sense) right, but also in explaining why it wouldn’t make much sense to change the law either. But, of course, that’s not the way the big industries that rely on copyright as crutch operate. If they don’t get their way, they go crying to the gov’t to have their business models propped up and thrust into the law. So, of course, the “anti-piracy” (i.e., the “we can’t adapt so let’s drag the whole world backwards”) group AFACT has already jumped out and demanded that the Australian government change the law in response to the ruling. And, of course, the Australian government says it’s “examining” the issue.

Of course, this just shows how far gone AFACT and its members (Hollywood studios mainly) are out of touch with what this ruling is saying. The ruling points out, quite clearly, that the problem isn’t with the law and it’s not with the technology. Changing the law doesn’t fix things. The problem is with how the big movie studios have failed to adapt, and are now blaming totally blameless parties for their own failures. The proper response is: “Okay, it’s time to come up with better business models.” It’s not to ask the government to artificially blame a third party that had nothing to do with the infringement. It’s really a rather stunning statement of incompetence that any industry thinks the cure to their own business model failures is to legally make an innocent third party responsible.

  • HP G62t Core i3 Notebook Pairs Envy 15 Looks With a $600 Price Tag [Hp]

Sony just announced a few colorful Core i3/i5 notebooks, and now HP is following suit with its new G62t. Its design closely resembles HP’s $1300 Envy, but you’ll pay less than half of that for the G62t’s base configuration.

That $600 base model has respectable specs, too: a 2.13GHz Core i3 processor, a 160GB hard drive, 3GB of DDR3 RAM, a 15.6-inch (1366 x 768) LED display, DVD burner, and three USB 2.0 ports. It’s also upgradeable to a Core i5 or i7 CPU, a 500GB hard drive, and 4GB RAM. You can also tack on a Blu-ray player and a multi-format memory card reader.

There are a few downsides: an HDMI port doesn’t come standard (but can be added on), and you’re stuck with Intel’s integrated graphics no matter what. But for $600, you could certainly do a lot worse. [HP via Slash Gear]

  • Danica Patrick headed for turn on the boob tube as racer on CSI: NY?

Breaking news! Your favorite female Indycar driver and mine, Danica Patrick, will be appearing on television February 10 sans her entire racing getup on the hit CBS show CSI: NY. Patrick will be playing – shocking, we know – a race car driver who is considered the top competitor to another star racing driver who dies under “suspicious circumstances.”

Patrick’s rival will be played – until he dies in an amazing car explosion in Manhattan two days before a major race, of course – by Antonio Sabato Jr. We can only assume that the resulting investigation will center around any involvement by the character played by Patrick.

Riveting television, we’re sure… but we’ll be a bit more interested to see if she is back on TV come February 13th for the official start of the NASCAR Nationwide Series opener in Daytona.

Gold continues to drop (what hedge?) and is currently at 1059.20 an ounce, down $3.80. Silver is slightly down by $0.06 to $15.29 an ounce. Copper futures are down 25 bps.

Most grain futures have recovered and are rising, save for corn and wheat.

Lumber continues its killer upward trend thanks to suppliers stocking up for the Spring building season. Futures are up 3.72% to $279.

  • Drew Peterson prosecutors nearing last witness

Will County prosecutors say they’re a few days away from calling their last witness in former Bolingbrook police sergeant Drew Peterson’s pretrial hearing.

Prosecutors have called more than 40 witnesses over three weeks.

They’ve said they plan to call about 60 in a hearing to determine what hearsay evidence a judge will let them present to a jury when Peterson stands trial in the 2004 death of Kathleen Savio.

Defense attorneys will be able to present their own witnesses, but they haven’t said how many they’ll call.

On Thursday, witnesses included law enforcement officials who went to Savio’s house the night her body was found.

Savio’s death was initially ruled an accident but was reclassified as a homicide after Peterson’s fourth wife disappeared in 2007.

2009 Mini Cooper S Convertible (above), Openometer (inset) – Click above for high-res image gallery

Ever wonder what possible use the Openometer could have? The tiny dashboard gauge is found only in the Mini convertible and tracks the number of hours a Mini motorist has been driving with the top down. Cute, sure, but hardly as useful as, say… a speedometer or fuel gauge. Well, David Loveall and over 400 other Mini Cooper Convertible owners across America found the Openometer very useful as they participated in the Open One Challenge.

Kansas City’s Loveall logged some 555.55 hours of top-down driving in his Mini, after driving across the country and visiting every one of the 48 contiguous states in the union. He took some of America’s greatest back-roads, like Route 66 and US 50, avoiding the freeway at all costs and often camping roadside in a tent.

For his dedication to the open-air cause, Loveall is being awarded with a free trip to England to visit the Mini factory in Oxford. That’s on top of the $1,000 in gift cards he got after finishing first in four out of five of the monthly contests and third in the fifth. Not too shabby, David. Follow the jump for the full press release, click here to visit the contest website and check out our gallery of high-res images from our review of the Mini Cooper S Convertible – in Interchange Yellow just like Loveall’s – by clicking the thumbnails below.
