  • A Brief Guide To NYSE Euronext’s Circuit Breakers

After the stock market crash of 1987 a la Black Monday, the NYSE decided to implement circuit breakers of sorts that halt trading on the exchange in order to keep the market from imploding.

    Here’s the latest for Q1 2010.

    You know. Just in case.

  • Two Political Confessions…

    …that might surprise you.

For me, Sarah Palin joining FNC is having the opposite effect for her than it did for Huckabee. I’ve grown to like him much more since he snagged the Fox show. I’m liking her less and less. Maybe she just needs to find her “legs” and she’s still a bit nervous? But she seems hollow and rehearsed. She answers questions with stock answers about the “free market system” and doesn’t ever seem to answer the exact question asked…like she’s pushing a play button and hoping the answer fits. Now, I’m not joining the Krauthammer camp just yet…but she needs to really sound a bit more confident in her knowledge when talking about Iran, North Korea and other important international issues. There has been more than one time I’ve cringed at her answers to important questions…

And the second is, unlike Rush, I wanted Obama to ‘succeed’ (whatever that means). I wanted him to be a good President. I hoped the realities of the office would prompt him to do the right things. I wanted the first Black President to be a memorable one. I worry about all the people out there that will allow his many foibles to feed into their racism…and their low expectations for him. I wish the first Black President would have been someone that had earned the position and was up to the job…someone like Colin Powell or like Allen West (who we might think about drafting for 2012).

Maybe that’s it, maybe that’s why I’m so uneasy with Sarah Palin. I don’t want the same thing to happen with the first women that’s happening with the first Black president. I want the first woman President to be a firestorm of knowledge and a a pillar of Conservative principle. I want Maggie Thatcher part II.

  • Obama’s Shrine

Okay, so the Photoshop gets a little sketchy…but it still made me laugh.

  • Early Morning Swim: Keith Olbermann and Richard Wolffe Discuss Palin’s Selective “Retarded” Outrage

    It’s still pretty much OKIYAR.

Greg Sargent reported this afternoon that Palin’s spokeswoman had tough words for Limbaugh (though less tough, of course, than she had for Emanuel). Asked for a comment about Limbaugh’s rant, Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton emailed Sargent, “Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name calling at the expense of others is disrespectful.”

Rush was at least the second Republican to come under Palin fire on the issue. Perry’s top political adviser got an admonition from Stapleton for “crude and demeaning” and “disrespectful” and crude remarks. (He apparently repeatedly used the “r-word” during a conference call with an opposing campaign.)

Then there’s Beck, who is himself the father of a special needs child. He was speaking on his radio show last month to actress (and, apparently, artist) Mary Lynn Rajskub (of 24 fame) and asked her about paintings she does. When she says she particularly enjoys painting “retarded children and paintings of the insane,” laughter can be heard on Beck’s end of the line. […]

So is Beck, who like Limbaugh Palin thanked in her book, next on the ritual condemnation list?

Nope. The ‘Cuda’s already backing off El Rushbo.

  • Understanding Electronic Distributorless Ignition System (EDIS)

    Hi,

Recently i was suggested by friend to install a Electronic Distributorless Ignition System (EDIS) on my carb zen to improve FE and Performance. I asked how is the ignition system related to FE & Performance of car. He started giving out jargon which i could not understand and said would think about it.

I tried searching for the topic on THBP and other sites, but i didnt really understood the entire concept and that if the same is only meant for carb or is for MPFI engines too.

Would need some gyaan from the techies and gurus here to help me understand the EDIS concept, its benefits, disadvantages, etc etc please:

  • Europe’s Mobile Premier Awards Showcases Mobile Startups

The Mobile Premier Awards have announced their full programme, happily occuring at the same time as the Mobile World Congress talkfest in Barcelona. About 30,000 mobile experts will be in the city so it’s great timing. TechCrunch Europe is a media partner with the Awards and I’ll be on the jury this year judging the startups.

Besides the classic MPA in Innovation live 3-minute pitches, this year also features the winners of previous awards.

There’ll also be a special keynote from arguably the most successful startup in mobile history, Russell Buckley of Admob, which was recently aqcuired by Google for $750m.

  • The Flash saga continues: Adobe responds to charges of “laziness”

Kevin Lynch, CTO of Adobe, has posted the latest riposte in the ongoing fencing match between Apple and Adobe concerning the lack of Flash support in Apple’s portable products, including the iPad. Apple’s latest word on the subject reputedly came from Steve Jobs himself at the recent Town Hall meeting with Apple employees, where he characterized Adobe as “lazy,” condemned the plugin’s poor performance on the OS X platform, and predicted a future where HTML5 would supplant Flash. Presumably in response to those comments, Adobe’s Lynch has argued in favor of Flash, citing the plugin’s ubiquity, flexibility, and Adobe’s commitment to “focus on enabling our customers to do their best work, and helping them reach people effectively and reliably around the world across operating systems, browsers, and a variety of devices.”

Lynch acknowledges the rise of HTML5 video in his post, but he notes that he sees the two technologies as co-existing rather than “one replacing the other.” He also claims that since no standard implementation of HTML5 video exists, widespread adoption of HTML5 in place of Flash would lead us back to the “dark ages of video on the Web with incompatibility issues.” He also re-affirms Adobe’s commitment to bring Flash 10.1 to mobile platforms like the Nexus One, and he claims that 10.1 provides enhanced performance across a variety of platforms. His claim is true — our own testing showed substantial improvements in Flash 10.1’s performance on OS X — but whether those improvements are enough to enable it to run well on iPhone OS is another story.

What’s most interesting about Lynch’s post isn’t within the main body of the post, but rather in the comments that follow. Read on to find out more.

    [Via The Register]
In the comments section on Lynch’s post, he makes the following statement: “I can tell you that we don’t ship Flash with any known crash bugs, and if there was such a widespread problem historically Flash could not have achieved its wide use today.” That’s an interesting statement. Let’s consider the particulars of it.

Lynch claims Flash is installed on 98% of computers on the internet. If we’re being extremely generous, we could say that OS X makes up 10% of those computers, and we could say Linux runs on an additional 1%. So, out of all the computers hooked up to the internet that run Flash, 89% of them are running some flavor of Windows. If Flash runs just fine on Windows but has middling to terrible performance on other platforms (which is usually the case), it’s all too easy to dismiss these problems as not being “widespread” — even if millions of OS X and Linux users are experiencing poor performance from Flash, many millions more Windows users aren’t.

Lynch himself admits that “given identical hardware, Flash Player on Windows has historically been faster than the Mac, and it is for the most part the same code running in Flash for each operating system.” You know what? That’s exactly the problem right there. That’s where the accusations of laziness are coming from. If Flash is optimized for Windows but doesn’t run well on Unix-based platforms using the same hardware, it’s Adobe’s job to modify its code to improve performance. It’s not Apple’s job, it’s not Linus Torvalds’s job, it’s Adobe’s job. Even Microsoft knows better than to expect Office for Windows to run in Mac OS X with the same code; that’s why Office for Mac exists.

As for Flash’s commitment to mobile platforms? The writing is already on the wall for that one: Firefox for Maemo disabled plugin support for its latest release because “the Adobe Flash plugin used on many sites degraded the performance of the browser to the point where it didn’t meet our standards.” Remind me again why people are bashing Apple for keeping Flash off the iPad?

Oh, yeah: Hulu. Many people are coming out in defense of Flash because they want to view videos from the site on their iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads, but until or unless Hulu moves away from Flash to HTML5 or some other solution, they’re unable to do so. Mike Schuster of Minyanville summed up the anti-Apple side of the argument pretty succinctly by saying, “Effectively blocking the site comes solely at the customers’ expense and directs them to Apple’s pay content in the worst way possible, and it’s in direct opposition of net neutrality and an open Web.”

Hang on. Did he really just use the words “net neutrality” and “open Web” in the same paragraph as the word “Hulu“?

This is what an open Web looks like?

Yeah, fine, it’s not Hulu’s fault the site is useless to the billions of people who don’t live in the US. It’s the US entertainment industry’s fault, with its Byzantine copyright laws and its insatiable thirst for cash. But if you’re going to bash Apple over “net neutrality” like Schuster or “open access to content” like Lynch, it’s pretty foolish to continue citing access to Hulu as one of your linchpin arguments. If you’re really championing for an open Web, how about advocating for a site that is actually open to all?

  • FriendFinder Cancels the World’s First Web Porn IPO After Investors Yawn [MediaMemo]

Last month we posed this question in a headline about FriendFinder Networks: “Are Investors Finally Ready for an Internet Porn IPO?“. Today we know the answer: No.

FriendFinder, a collection of porn sites and niche social networks, was supposed to start trading this week, after filing for a public offering more than a year ago. But this morning it pulled its IPO, citing “market conditions”.

I’m assuming that this is not a euphemism for the Dow’s plunge yesterday, but instead a polite way of saying “we couldn’t find buyers”. The AP reports that FriendFinder, which was trying to sell some 20 million shares for $10 to $12, sold 15 million shares at $7 each earlier this week in pre-IPO trading.

Now FriendFinder will have to find some other way to resolve its massive debt issues. The company throws off a lot of cash, but all of that — and more — is getting hoovered up by loan payments. The company reported $45 million in income from operations in the first nine months of last year, and spent $75.3 million on interest payments in the same period.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the market for a high-end sports car, this may be the time to make the FriendFinder team an offer. The company has yet to sell the Ferrari 360 Modena it bought from its founder for $125,000 in 2006. FriendFinder is carrying the car on its books at $95,000, but I’d bet they’re willing to negotiate.

  • Want to Use New York City’s Coolest App? Get a Google Phone [MediaMemo]

Apple has some 140,000 apps for its iPhone users. People who use phones with Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system have much less choice.

But here’s a consolation prize: Android users do get to use the coolest app in New York City. At least according to the NYC Big App competition, which awarded its Grand Prize last night to WayFinder NYC, an Android-only app.

Wayfinder, created by Victor Sima and Steven Lao, uses jaw-dropping space-age “augmented reality” technology — which layers map info, tied to GPS data, over the camera view of a user’s phone — to help people find the nearest subway station.

I’ve seen a couple variants of these, at least in demo form, and they’re some of the coolest things I’ve seen that aren’t in “Minority Report” or some other movie.

This one looks pretty cool, too. There’s no sound in this demo, so don’t be alarmed:

I don’t know what’s nuttier about the technology that makes an app like this plausible — the fact that we can integrate this stuff into a consumer device, or the fact that we don’t run around shouting about how amazing this stuff is, because we already take it for granted.

Anway, here’s hoping that New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority doesn’t put the hammer down on this one. The MTA  has been frustratingly slow to adapt to new technology but alarmingly quick to chase after people with half-baked claims of copyright violations.

And it would be nice if the WayFinder team ports this thing to Apple’s (AAPL) platform, so New York City’s hordes of iPhone users can get their hands on it.

  • JooJoo enters production, ships this month

    joojoo

It might have legal issues galore thanks to Chandra Rathakrishnan’s legendary row with Michael Arrington, but the internet tablet formerly known as the CrunchPad has finally entered into production and should begin shipping later this month. To retail for $499 USD, the JooJoo features a 12.1″ multi-touch capacitive display with native resolution of 1366 x 768, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, 4GB SSD, front-facing camera, accelerometer, support for Flash (HD Flash will be all systems go when 10.1 comes out of beta) as well as a bunch of givens like integrated speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB port. Also announced today is Fusion Garage’s intent to open an app web store in which JooJoo owners will be able to grab whatever developers can make using some proprietary “but standards driven” APIs. Rathakrishnan et al are rather confident that their device will be able to take on competitors such as the HP Slate and Apple iPad, even going so far as to say of the later that the JooJoo is bigger, fully supports Flash (the real internet) and will beat its major competitors to the market, but one has to wonder what it’s all for in a day and age where most people are brand-conscious to the point where they’ll often turn away from something far better. We guess you have to start somewhere.

  • Germanium lasers offer ray of hope for optical computing

Bandwidth scarcity, is there any more pressing global issue that we’re faced with today? We think not. Given the exponential growth in both computing power and software’s exploitation and expectation of greater resources, it’s no surprise that at some point we’ll have to look beyond simple electrical currents as the transporters of our data. One bold step taken in that direction has been the demonstration of an operational germanium-on-silicon laser by researchers at MIT. By tweaking the electron count in germanium atoms with the help of some added phosphorous, they’ve been able to coax them into a photon-emitting state of being — something nobody thought possible with indirect bandgap semiconductors. Perhaps the best part of this is that germanium can be integrated relatively easily into current manufacturing processes, meaning that light-based internal communication within our computers is now at least a tiny bit closer to becoming a reality.

  • ARM planning three new Cortex CPUs, Eagle headed for smartphones

As if the Cortex-A9 isn’t stirring up enough emotion all by itself, ARM has revealed it is working hard on producing another, presumably even faster, iteration of its Cortex-A series of chips. Code named Eagle, the new processor is slated for a production run of 3 billion units annually, but alas there’s no more information on it beyond its intended market of smartphones, mobile computing, and digital TV products. There’s also word of a pair of embedded chips, dubbed Heron and Merlin, which will find roles to perform in automotive and audio processing environments. Unsurprising that ARM isn’t standing still, but we could’ve done with a little less mystery and a few more specs.

    [Thanks, Kamal]
