JDSU Expands Test Platform for Storage Network System Manufacturers
In response to the rising need for cost-effective tools to develop robust and reliable 6 Gb/s SAS and SATA systems, JDSU today announced the availability of the Xgig LXP and Narrow Blade development systems, as well as three new advanced functions compatible across the Xgig product line. The availability of lower cost SAS/SATA certified development tools makes the comprehensive monitoring, capture, and analysis capabilities of the industry-leading Xgig platform accessible to a wider range of developers and applications.
The Xgig LXP all-in-one development system offers fixed 2-link (4-port) SAS/SATA connectivity and the choice of any of Xgig’s comprehensive software functionality, all in a small and portable device. The smaller size makes the Xgig LXP well-suited for personal systems and environments with constrained workspace.
Narrow Blade cost-effectively extends complete 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA testing capabilities to any existing Xgig chassis. The Narrow Blade product also offers 2-link (4-port) SAS/SATA connectivity while supporting all of the advanced functionality of the Xgig platform. Narrow Blade is a lower-cost option that is ideal for design teams who do not need the full port count of the current Wide-Port Blade solution.
JDSU has also extended Xgig’s extensive capabilities with three new functions to accelerate the design, development and testing of 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA equipment:
* Target Emulator – generates 6 Gb/s SAS traffic at full data rates and gives developers complete control over traffic characteristics including adding response delay, injecting errors, and defining vendor-specific fields.
* Configurable Link Extender (CLE) – introduces signal conditioning to multi-function configurations to both simplify test configuration and maximize signal integrity.
* 6 Gb/s SATA Compliance Test Suite (SATA CTS) – significantly simplifies design and verification of SATA equipment to ensure products pass compliance testing. The Xgig SATA CTS has been approved by the SATA-IO for use by developers for 6 Gb/s SATA Device Digital target testing (UTD 1.4).“SATA-IO is excited that JDSU has announced its certified compliance test suite for 6 Gb/s devices for Xgig,” said John Calvin, SATA-IO logo work group chair. “The availability of certified compliance tools makes it easier for companies to confirm their products’ compliance with the SATA-IO Revision 3.0 standards, which will ultimately help accelerate market adoption of 6 Gb/s products.”

Measures Moisture in Gases
Moisture in gases and compressed air can cause considerable damage, so it is vitally important to perform regular checks. The latest device for this purpose is called “Hydrobaby”, and is available from Witt.
The hand-held analyser has been developed for mobile use. It features a ceramic metal oxide sensor that determines the humidity of the gas from the dew point.
This is generally recognised as a superior method: very quick and precise measurements, significantly lower sensitivity to environmental temperature, very low error of measurement (+/- 2°C) and a large measurement range of -110 to +20 °C are real advantages over alternative sensor systems. Thus “Hydrobaby” is even suitable for sensitive applications such as medicine, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Classic applications are industrial process monitoring, environmental technology, gaseous fuels and many other applications for technical gases and air, such as in the metal industry or food industry.
The handy device made of shock-resistant plastic and pressed aluminium weighs only 1600 grams (approx.). It has an integrated long-life rechargeable battery and a backlit graphic display with multilingual menu. It displays the relevant parameters such as dew point, relative humidity in percent and moisture concentration in ppm (parts per million), as well as the ambient temperature, pressure in the measuring chamber and a trend plot of the measured values. For the latter a circulating memory that can store the last 4000 measurements is included. An inbuilt test routine protects against measuring errors and warns if the filter is blocked.
Users can assign measurements to various products or processes by name. The integrated USB port allows data export for further processing and documentation, as well as recharging the battery.A separate model of “Hydrobaby” with ATEX approval is available for use in potentially explosive atmospheres and features various options for special applications.

HEAVY DUTY SIEVE SHAKER ANALYSETTE 18
The ANALYSETTE 18 is a vibratory sieving machine that has been specially designed for processing large quantities of material which requires sieving. It essentially avoids the disadvantages of lighter sieving machines in which the sample and sieve weights can sometimes bias the sieve results.
The ANALYSETTE 18 is primarily used for particle size analysis and grading of coarse-grained materials. The maximum feed quantity of 25 kg for sieving material and sieve stack means it can also be used in pilot plant production or in test series for larger quantities.
It is used wherever manual sieving is replaced by mechanical sieving in order to lower costs or achieve greater reproducibility. A maximum sample quantity of up to 6 kg can be processed in the measuring range 63 µm to 63 mm. Sieve process times are between 10 and 30 minutes.
Used with the evaluation programme AUTOSIEVE, which is delivered free-of-charge with every sieve shaker, means that sieving results are not only available more quickly but are also more reliable. Weighing as well as calculation errors for the individual sieve fractions are thus avoided, as the computer carries out of complete analysis.
Method of operation:
Two unbalanced motors installed in phase opposition under exactly defined angles create optimum vibration of the analysis sieves mounted on the sieve plate. Both motors are precision braked at the end of the sieving time. This design means that the sieved materials are accelerated vertically as well as horizontally, causing the material to change direction continuously, thus producing shorter sieving times and sharper separation results.
Features of performance:
– short sieve times, exact cut-off points as a result of multi-dimensional movement processes
– large sieve material throughput (material quantity up to 6 kg, operating with up to 7 sieves plus sieving pan and sieve cover)
– universal support plate and clamping device for 350, 400, 450 mm and/or 12, 16, 18 inch sieve diameter
– sieves with mesh widths of 63 µm to 63 mm
– quick locking and release mechanism for sieve clamping
– variable timer 5 to 60 minutes, continuous operation possible
– robust construction for heavy-duty operating conditions
– smooth, stable operation, very low noise output -
Scented toys – Analysing allergenic Substances
Relatively new on the market are scented toys. Not only do these substances smell good, but they also possess a more or less allergenic potential. Solved was this difficult task of the sample preparation without fragrance being lost with the FRITSCH Vibratory Micro Mill PULVERISETTE 0.
In December, a new EU directive in regards to the regulation of chemical safety of toys was passed. The contained critical values are by all means questionable. Very interesting is here the press release 29/2008 from the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment Berlin: The complete article can be read here: New EU Toys Directive doesn’t sufficiently protect children’s health. It literally says: „The new Toys Directive does contain a list of 55 banned allergenic substances. However, in reality this ban on use is partially revoked through the introduction of a limit value of 0.01 percent (100 ppm = 100 mg/kg) for admissible trace levels.“
Derived from this difficulty the task was drafted, to comminute a sample of a “scented toy horse” in such a manner so that a powder evolves. The scents can not be lost though. Scents are relatively slightly elusive in order to be smelled. Therefore it has to be assumed that with the amplification of the surface, a faster transition into the ambient air occurs. Therefore the substances would elude analysis. In order to avoid this to the greatest possible extend, the sample was comminuted during permanent cooling with liquid nitrogen.
For this 8 x 8 mm large chunks were cut from the toys and comminuted with the Vibratory Micro Mill PULVERISETTE 0, equipped with a cryo-box, tempered steel mortar and ball. Mortar and ball were pre-cooled in the cryo-box with liquid nitrogen. Then the sample was added and again cooled with liquid nitrogen. The in this manner prepared cryo-box was attached on top of the Vibratory-Micro Mill PULVERISETTE 0 and started oscillating. After 4 minutes, with an amplitude of 2 mm, the sample was in regards to the demands fine enough. The powder was extracted with a mixture of MTBE- hexane. A significantly higher value of the sought after substance could be in comparison to the coarsely comminuted sample detected.
As especially advantageous during the comminution proved to be, that the task could be monitored visually and the further individual addition of liquid nitrogen during the comminution is possible. In this manner the material can be kept constantly swimming in the liquid nitrogen.

Intel teases six-core Gulftown, discusses tera-scale computing
The 32nm dual-core Clarkdale processors that recently made their debut are about to pave the way for Intel’s next performance crown chaser, the six-core Gulftown. You might’ve known that already, but Intel’s decided to furnish us with the above slide detailing the particular differences between the two dies, with the most notable being the whopping 1.17 billion transistors that the new CPU will be composed of. The major attraction of Clarkdale chips lies in their power efficiency and competent integrated GPU, but the Gulftown focus will be firmly on the high end. Hence, there’s no integrated graphics, but the built-in memory controller supports three channels of DDR3 RAM and even plays nice with lower-powered 1.35-volt sticks. There’s also confirmation that the forthcoming hex-core chip will fit inside the familiar LGA-1366 socket, so if you bought a high end Core i7, worry not, you’ll be able to replace your still blisteringly quick CPU with an even faster beast. Quad-core variants — by virtue of disabling a pair of cores — are on the cards as well, while Intel also took the opportunity to delve into questions of 1Tbps+ bandwidth interconnects and its 80-core processor project, but you’ll have to hit up the links below to learn more about those.

Awkward Stock Photo Blog Hit With DMCA Claim
Brad Hubbard writes “One of my favorite sites, AwkwardStockPhotos.com received a legal nastygram claiming that by showing the stock photos from iStockPhoto.com (and linking back, with watermark in place), they were violating copyright. What they were actually doing was driving tens of thousands of hits directly to the iStockPhoto site, and there is at least anecdotal evidence that they increased the number of purchases of these otherwise humorously bad photos.
Sounds to me like these are all perfect Fair Use examples, being stomped by a company that didn’t like how its product was being used. That makes me sad, but it’s the way things are in the world of harsh ownership.”
The blog, if you didn’t know, basically found awkward stock photo images, but did so in a very promotional way, linking back to the original, and always including the original watermark. In other words, it was helping to advertise some rather unique iStockPhoto images — and as the site notes, lots of other sites have done the same — and even received book deals for it. It seems like iStock’s parent company, Getty Images, totally overreacted to a site that was only helping them, and not harming the company at all.

Morgan Stanley: Here’s Why The Great Central Bank Tightening Cycle Came To A Premature End

Earlier this week Australia shocked the world when it left its key interest rates unchanged after a sequence of three hikes.
(That’s really not an exaggeration to say that it shocked the world, and it tells you something about the world we’re living in 2010 when something the Reserve Bank of Australia can make such huge news.)
And so while two or three weeks ago, we were talking about how the global tightening cycle had entered full swing, now we’re talking about how its already ended, or at least put on hiatus. Australia cited Chinese concerns in its decision.
But Australia wasn’t the only tightener, and it’s not the only one to pause early. The same goes for the Norges Bank (Norway).
Obviously, China is not the only issue here.
Morgan Stanley offers some more thoughts on the matter, which basically boil down to: the rate hikes weren’t accomplishing anything in terms of stopping bubbles:
These are not isolated incidents, in our view. All the
central banks who either had embarked on removing policy
accommodation in 2009, such as the BoI, the RBA and NB, or
were expected to begin raising rates early in 1Q10, such as
the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank of Korea (BoK),
have refrained from hiking policy rates in their meetings so far
this year. Korea’s strong recovery and extremely low policy
rates, and India’s economic bounce and the risk of inflation
made the central banks of these two economies front-runners
for hiking policy rates in early 2010. Yet none of these ‘front-
riders’ have made any fresh attempts to break away from the
pack this year. Why? We believe that the decision to raise
policy rates has to balance concerns about the domestic
economy against policy constraints of a global nature.
Headwinds from tightening ahead of the major central banks
have made it difficult for the policy action to gain traction.
Early-hiking central banks have had to deal with currency
appreciation and asset markets that have stubbornly stayed
buoyant in line with their counterparts in the major
economies.Specifically, with regards to Australia:
The RBA is a case in point, having raised rates three times
already in this hiking cycle. Markets followed the RBA’s lead
and priced in a series of rate hikes into front-end interest
rates, but they also bid up the Aussie dollar (see Exhibit 1). By
contrast, stock markets and long-term interest rates in
Australia have barely noticed all of this action. Exhibit 1 shows
that stock markets and bond yields have stayed closely linked
to their counterparts in the US. Of the three early hikers, the
RBA has been easily the most aggressive central bank,
spurred by the resilience shown by the Australian economy. It
is certainly in a position to argue that its actions have taken
away a decent portion of the monetary accommodation and
that these rate hikes will have an impact on household
spending via variable-rate mortgages. However, the fact that
asset markets have not responded to even the most
aggressive central bank in this hiking cycle reflects the
difficulty that early hikers face in finding policy traction. So basically these banks found themselves with all the drags of higher rates, and none of the bubble-cooling benefits. Raw deal.
