  • Gateway’s FX series desktops revamped, SX / DX series find solace in Core i3 and i5

In the market for new desktop machinery? Gateway’s gone ahead and given its gaming-centric FX series a facelift for the new year — nothing Alienware-esque crazy, but we do like the accessible ports up top, right next to the control dial for LED-infused lighting effects. Enough about the superficial, let’s go inside: a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor, ATI Radeon HD5850 with 1GB discrete memory, 1.5TB HDD with additional expansion bays, up to 16GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and a $1,299 starting price. There’s a 16x DVD drive, and if you don’t mind forking over a little extra, you can get a separate 4x BD-ROM drive. As for the rest of the lineup, while still donning old skin, the SX series has been boosted by a 2.93GHz Core i3 processor, and the DX series a 3.2GHz Core i5 and that 4x BD-ROM drive. You know the drill by now: FX glamor shots below, press release just after the break.

  • Some Pros and Cons of a Google Tablet with a Chrome OS

The Chrome OS is a bit different than most operating systems. Scheduled to be unveiled late this year, the Chrome OS is entirely cloud-based.

It’s still speculative to say if Google is really working on a tablet computer. But let’s assume for a minute that Google is developing such a device with a Chrome OS.

    Sponsor

I guess that’s not too hard to do considering this concept video Google created.

The Chrome OS opens some interesting opportunities for Google. A cloud-based operating system would make a tablet unique compared to the iPad. No data would be stored on the device at all. A lost tablet would not mean lost data. The information would be retrieved simply by going online.

But the absence of actual data on a device is also an inherent weakness. There are some things you always want to have on your device. For instance, client-based software. You can’t do that with an operating system that’s all in the cloud.

Further, since the Chrome OS is not coming out until late next year, it does face some challenges. First off, Windows Mobile 7 will most likely be unveiled before Google launches the Chrome OS, giving Microsoft a head start in the market. The iPad OS is more mature. Apple has more experience with UX development in this regard.

    Speed

In the tech press, we get caught up with issues such as openness. Do customers really care that much? We think they prefer open systems because of the options that come with.

What they really want, though, is speed. A goal for Google with the Chrome OS is to make it very fast. But the iPad is lightning quick. By developing its own processor for the iPad, Apple is realizing a customer desire. Would a Google Tablet with a Chrome OS be as fast as the iPad?

    Security

The Chrome OS is a browser-based operating system which inherently raises issues about its security. Browsers are widely acknowledged as prime targets for malware. Remember, Google suffered a cyber attack through an employee’s compromised browser (Internet Explorer).

But are the criticisms founded? The Chrome OS is an open environment. It’s not an air-tight vault. Google knows it has bugs. So, they have gone out to the community, like good developers do, and challenged people to find the flaws. We like what Threat Expert has to say about the matter:

“By openly discussing the security challenges and suggested approaches to circumvent them the Chrome guys talk to us this way:

‘Look, in our bank there is a vault with so much gold in it. The system is secure, but we’re not sure about that air con duct – we think it’s a weak point and the intruders may potentially crawl through it.’

Given the source code is open, the potential intruders will get access to the internal scheme immediately. But the moment they start studying it, the highly qualified white-hat professionals will start doing that as well. The idea is that any bugs, flaws or weaknesses will be revealed and fixed instantly, without leaving the intruders any chance to plan an attack.

Compare it with an alternative approach: ‘Look, in our bank there is a vault with so much gold in it. The system is secure.’ After the robbery: ‘The system is secure.’ After another one: ‘Ok, we fixed it, the system is secure’, and so on.”

It is smart. But that is what we expect from Google. A smart approach. Here’s Google’s take on how it approaches the security issue with Chrome OS:

    Conclusion

A Chrome OS makes sense on a device like a tablet computer. Google’s focus is on cloud computing. Perhaps the most valid criticism is Google’s broad approach and lack of experience in the hardware market.

Google is learning and they have some clear advantages. The iPad does not support multi-tasking. The Chrome OS makes it easy to manage multiple applications. Lacking features means Apple won’t dominate with the iPad. But the Chrome OS is a first-time operating system that is unprecedented in its approach.

That’s not always a recipe for market domination.

  • Yahoo! Files for Patent on Geo-Located, Social, Augmented Reality (Update)

You’re walking down the street. Your phone buzzes, a map or a screen overlay pops up and you’re shown a note left in that location by one of your friends – along with an ad for your favorite pizza. Walk into the pizza place and your phone buzzes again – your friends have something to say about the guy behind the counter. That might have sounded far-fetched a few years ago, but it doesn’t so much anymore, does it?

18 months ago Yahoo! filed a sophisticated patent on VIRTUAL NOTES IN A REALITY OVERLAY and that patent was published last week. Check out the patent sketches below.

    Sponsor

The technology envisioned by the team of senior researchers who filed the application is reminiscent of now-available apps like Loopt, BlockChalk, Junaio and others. The whole vision of location, social and advertising features put together, however, may be quite unique. The patent also goes beyond location to include notes tied to mobile objects like cars and people.

Update: This report at first mistakenly claimed that the patent in question had been granted. In fact it has merely been filed and published. The US Patent Office customarily publishes patents 18 months after they have been filed, then evaluates them as soon as it is able to afterwords. (Usually not very soon.) Given the pace of web technology these days, that process sounds absurd, but I apologize for reporting on it incorrectly anyway.

Yahoo’s patent was filed in July of 2008, published after the customary 18 months last Thursday and first blogged about by upstart tech news site GoRumors this morning. The same team of inventors had another related patent application published at the end of last year on an augmented reality device that would discover audio, video and other information that’s pertinent to a user’s physical surroundings and display that information on a screen overlay.

The technology described in this latest patent isn’t just location-based social networking, or Augmented Reality “air tagging” – it includes social graph analysis, permissioning, expiration dates, contextual advertising and more. It’s not just text notes, it includes methods of augmented reality with photos, videos and more. While the most popular mobile augmented reality apps on the market today focus on text on top of locations – there’s no reason why reality can’t be augmented in other ways as well.

There’s no indication that the technology exists yet outside of the patent application and sketches below, but if Yahoo! could put together such an integrated vision of location-based features then it would have a very interesting service on its hands.

This vision puts emphasis on limited visibility of public notes based on the social connections of people doing the reading and writing, on the use of the tool for communication between people more than for public graffiti, on notes tied to entities and not just to places and on advertising based on a reader’s past expressed interests. That sounds like the kind of thing Facebook might do with its inevitably forthcoming location services.

Will anything come of this patent? It’s hard to say, since it’s Yahoo, where genius flowers but then too often gets left out in the cold to die. Just two months before this innovative patent was filed, were were heralding Yahoo’s brand new Location Database API as a would-be fountain of location-aware apps. Almost two years later, though geo is hotter than ever, it seems that nothing much has come of that effort. (Please, correct me if I’m wrong about that.) Six months ago we ran an article titled Yahoo! Launches Major Challenge to Facebook Connect. That doesn’t seem like such a hot topic anymore, either. We asked Yahoo! for comment this morning about this latest patent and haven’t been put in touch with anyone yet.

None the less, these are some very interesting ideas. Someone is sure to build something like this very soon. Maybe it will be Yahoo.

Watch this space for ReadWriteWeb’s next public event and future research reports on Augmented Reality and geolocation.

  • Engadget Latest To Try Comment Cooling Off Period; I Can’t Figure Out Why

Last month, we wrote about a local news website in Illinois that was getting frustrated with the dialog in its comments, and it instituted a “cooling off period” where it shut down its comments for a while, hoping that it would drive away the less desirable comments. The whole thing made no sense to us. Those types of commenters would eventually come back, and the solution should be offering better incentives and better overall discussion for commenters, not blocking out everyone. And yet… (without giving credit to the site that led the way last month), it looks like super popular gadget blog Engadget has done the same thing, apparently after comments over the whole iPad thing got too heated. Engadget, of course, is owned by AOL — and you would think that if there were any company out there that understood group dynamics online by now, it would be AOL. Honestly, I’m still really confused as to what this will actually do, other than make Engadget a lot less interesting for those readers who took part in the community.

  • Swedish Stamps Celebrate Cats

    Swedish Cat Stamps

Sweden just release a set of four stamps showing different glimpses of a cat’s daily life. The stamps were designed by Swedish illustrator Carina Länk and they are a celebration of the ways in which cats communicate through their body language and sounds.

SVERAK, the National Cat Association of Sweden, helped interpret each of the cat behaviors depicted in the stamps:

1 “Food is good.” Cats need a well-balanced diet and will not settle for leftovers. If their food does not have the right ingredients, cats can suffer from deficiency diseases. It is in a cat’s nature to snack and they can eat up to 20 times a day. Cats are predatory animals and over thousands of years have maintained their carnivorous instincts.
2 “That’s mine!” A little ball can entertain a cat. Cats are mischievous in general and can entertain themselves with relatively little means. A wad of paper can be equally interesting as a toy purchased at the store. But avoid a ball of yarn and any other items with loose parts that the cat can swallow.
3 “Don’t come too close!” Defensive posture, often an arched back with the body angled toward the potential attacker, ears flattened backwards or to the side, dilated pupils, whiskers standing straight out and the mouth bared to show its teeth. This cat is  clearly signaling that it is prepared to defend itself.
4 “I slept well.” A cat needs a lot of sleep, around 20 hours a day, and all cats want to be left alone when they are sleeping. There is probably no other animal in the world that can stretch as sensually as a cat that has just woken up. Cats have excellent hearing and are alert to sounds even when they are sleeping – just watch how their ears move in their sleep.

Ms. Länk also designed the picture of the cat on the First Day Cover, the head of the cat on the FDC cancellation, and the illustration of kittens on the Collector’s Sheet. Visit the Posten online shop and download Bulletin 1 2010 to read an interview with Ms. Länk and to order the new cat stamps for your collection.

  • Former McHenry board member John Jung gets GOP nod

Former McHenry County Board Vice President John Jung will get a shot at reclaiming the District 5 seat he lost in 2008.

Jung, along with incumbent Tina Hill, earned a spot on the November ballot by emerging from Tuesday’s Republican primary with a sizable lead over board critic David Frederick.

According to unofficial totals, Jung had 2,270 votes, Hill had 2,195 and Frederick had 1,618.

Jung said he felt better than he did after the 2008 race, when the presence of then-candidate Barack Obama’s name on the ballot contributed to the defeat of many Republican candidates who would have otherwise been safe.

“It was a Republican primary,” Jung said. “It wasn’t a general election with Obama on the ballot.”

Hill said she would like to work with Jung again. Both will compete against Democratic incumbent Jim Kennedy for a 2-year term in the November election.

“Jim is OK, but I would prefer to have my colleague back on the same side of the issues,” Hill said.

Both Hill and Jung pledged to focus on groundwater conservation, open space preservation and the 2030 land use plan if they are elected.

  • The Chinese Consumption Monster Doubles Imports In January

    china credit

China’s voracious consumption of raw materials anf finished goods is turning the nation into a veritable import monster.

January import data, to be released on February 10th, is already expected to show 100% year over year growth according to Beijing-based economist Xing Ziqiang.

Exports probably ‘just’ rose 30%, which speaks to the fact that China is indeed shifting to become more of a consumer than producer, finally. Note that in 2009 the country’s trade surplus collapsed 34.2%.

Just realize that Chinese imports aren’t all coming from the U.S. and Europe. Some of the key beneficiaries of increased Chinese consumption are the nations right next door:

    Bloomberg:

“This is very important for regional growth,” said Xing. “It reflects very strong domestic consumption of durable goods like autos as China imports lots of parts from Japan, Korea and Taiwan.”

  • Video ad network BrightRoll outreaches Hulu, closes $10M third round

BrightRoll co-founder and CEO Tod Sacerdoti — pronounced “satch er DOH tee” if you don’t speak Italian — has three reasons to be happy this week. First, video advertising network BrightRoll is, according to Quantcast’s stats, now bigger than Hulu in terms of reach to Internet-using humans. BrightRoll’s ads reach 53.3 million unique viewers a month, compared to the Hulu Network’s 31.6 million. (The Hulu.com site draws 20.7 million.)

Second,BrightRoll has scored $10 million in Series C financing led by Scale Venture Partners, bringing the company’s total venture funding to $16 million since its launch in July 2006. Previous investors True Ventures, Adams Street Capital and KPG Ventures also participated in the round. Rob Theis, Managing Director with Scale Venture Partners, has joined BrightRoll’s board of directors.

Wait, there’s more! BrightRoll also announced today that it has been profitable for nearly the entire last 12 months. Rather than burning through it, the company will use this round of financing to expand its technology platform, beef up worldwide advertiser and publisher operations, and hopefully increase its leadership position in America.

Sacerdoti told me in a long phone call today that it’s not just BrightRoll, it’s video advertising as a whole that’s taking off. “The biggest theme we’ve seen over the past 12 months,” he said, “is that video advertising is being served for any free content, not just video content. Anywhere someone can serve a video ad, you’ll see a video ad. Video ads are going to be much more broad than TV will be.”

That bodes well for video ad networks like BrightRoll, as well as its competitors such as YuMe and Tremor Media. The thing about video ad networks is, as an Internet user, you’re not really aware of their existence. You just see lots of video ads all over the place, without being told who’s serving them. “It’s like when you watch Project Runway,” Sacerdoti said. “You know you’re watching Bravo, but you don’t think about whether or not it’s Bravo that sold the ads. Often it’s not.”

“I think by this time next year the majority of the top five to ten video properties by any measure will be aggregator networks,” he said. “The best example for this is display advertising. They’re by far the largest in reach and spending — Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL and 10 ad networks make up the top fourteen. But what we’re seeing pretty clearly from the advertising community is that the preferred ad medium is video. All things considered, advertisers would almost always prefer to run a video to talk to their customers.”

Why is Scale putting $10 million into BrightRoll? “The online video ad market will grow to billions of dollars over the next few years by disrupting the $70 billion television ad market,” Theis said in a prepared statement. That’s three and a half times the size of Google’s annual ad revenue, and more than twice the total $30 billion online ad market. The most strategic Internet investments are those that compete not with other Internet businesses, but with the much larger amount of money still being spent offline.

  • Fahy survives challenge from former foe Lee Barrett

John Fahy handily won the GOP nomination for another term on the Kane County Board’s 21st District.

According to unofficial totals with all 10 precincts reporting, Fahy had 56 percent of the vote in the Republican primary, with 548 votes, while challenger Lee Barrett, a former board member, had 367 votes.

Fahy, 48, of West Dundee, said his work making Randall Road and Route 72 a safer intersection with turning lanes gave him an edge over the competition.

“I think that Mr. Barrett was the county board member for eight years, and in my years, we’ve moved forward and the voters wanted to continue to move forward instead of moving backward.”

Fahy will now face Democrat Joseph Haimann in the November general election.

Barrett, 72, of East Dundee, held the office for two terms before losing to Fahy four years ago.

The candidates shared similar views on issues such as business development, but they took different approaches on video gambling.

Barrett said gambling is a moral issue that does not create jobs or support a community.

But while Fahy said he does not support video gambling, he does support the $31 billion capital improvement plan the state seeks to partially fund with revenue from the machines.

The 21st District covers parts of Carpentersville, East Dundee and West Dundee.

  • Wheeler, Provenzano secure District 3 GOP nod

Nick Provenzano and incumbent Barbara Wheeler took the top spots in a five-person field Tuesday night in their bids to secure the Republican nomination for two seats representing the McHenry County Board’s District 3, according to unofficial results late Tuesday.

With all precincts reporting, Provenzano had tallied 1,716 votes and Wheeler garnered 1,367 votes.

The winners will face Democrat Lori McConville of Crystal Lake in November. Two, two-year terms are at stake.

Provenzano, a former six-year board member who lost his seat in 2008, said constituents agreed with his plan.

“It was my message to voters, unfiltered, that basically said lower taxes and less spending,” he said. “I know the budget. I know where we can do cuts.”

Craig Steagall, Karen Tynis and Veronica Armstrong rounded out the field.

  • Betty White To Rue McClanahan: “Drop Dead!”

Betty White is serious about being the final Golden Girl standing…..

After the deaths of Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur, Betty and actress Rue McClanahan are the last surviving stars of the beloved television sitcom The Golden Girls. Earlier this year, Rue, 75, suffered a stroke that has kept her hospitalized for weeks. Naturally, 88-year-old pal Betty was there to offer her well wishes for a speedy recovery; she sent Rue a heartfelt message which read: “Dear Rue, I hope you hurry up and die so I can be the last Golden Girl left. NOT KIDDING!”

But don’t worry, Rue thought the card was hilarious! Apparently “Drop Dead” is a term of endearment between these two.

  • Everybody Forgets The Readers When They Bash News Aggregators

I remember way back before the Internet when I got most of my daily news via the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN. If it wasn’t reported by either of those outlets, there was a good chance I wouldn’t hear that news at all.

    Those days are over.

The problem is that most of the people running legacy news sites today are way older than I am, and still can’t get their arms around the fact that the world has fundamentally and irreversibly changed. Today I get my non tech news via scores of sources. I’m led there via social sites like Twitter and Facebook, and from aggregators like Google News and Memeorandum. Most of my tech news comes, of course, via my phone and email inbox.

It’s ok that the legacy guys don’t understand that, because when they erect paywalls it just stokes TechCrunch, which isn’t behind a paywall. Live and let live, I say. Far be it from me to talk them off the ledge. Paywalls kill social links and aggregators unless they are specially designed to allow them via a set number of free views. But even then there’s enough friction that most people won’t bother.

But when Mark Cuban starts saying aggregators are bad, that’s something new. He’s one of the guys that gets it. He’s not supposed to be on the losing team:

Outspoken billionaire cum provocateur Mark Cuban charged Google and other content aggregators Tuesday of being freeloaders — or worse. “The word that comes to mind is vampires,” he said. “When you think about vampires, they just suck on your blood.”

Telling the world that you don’t want them to do you the favor of visiting your site is just ridiculous.

Let me repeat that. When someone visits your site they are doing you a favor. Not the other way around.

And when an aggregator puts up a link to your site, they are doing you a favor by sending you traffic. Not the other way around.

As I’ve written before, “We throw a party when someone “steals” our content and links back to us. High fives all around the office. At least there’s some small nod in our direction.”

The real problem out there today for news sites are the guys that just take stories and rewrite them on the cheap without any links or attribution at all. When you erect a paywall, you’re just encouraging this behavior. It’s less anyone will notice.

    What About The Users?

But forget all that navel gazing for a minute while I jump back up to my first paragraph. Aggregators are popular because they help users find the news they’re interested in. They serve a very real purpose and add value to the system. Without aggregators and social links users would be forced to choose which news sites they want to pay for, and trust that they’ll get everything they need from those sites.

I don’t want to jump back to 1993. I want to live in the present where each piece of news lives and dies by its own merit as it spreads virally around the Internet. That means I spend less time finding better content.

Mark Cuban knows all this, and he agrees. Which is why I don’t understand his lash out against aggregators. If news sites block aggregators, as Cuban urges, they lose and the users lose. No one wins. Except the sites that remain free. And those sites are here to stay.

    PRESS RELEASE:

Pricing Announced for 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 Sedans in North America

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 1, 2010… BMW announced the pricing today for the 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan, which will join BMW’s North American product range as the most dynamic 7 Series model. As the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US, the 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan will retail for $122,875 (standard wheelbase) and $126,775 (extended wheelbase). Both prices include $875 Destination & Handling. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, and technology.

Yielding exquisite levels of power and torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8, and in conjunction with the electronically-adjustable suspension with Active Roll Stabilization, the new B7 promises to offer a spectrum of driving experiences so broad as to be unheard of in this class of automobiles. The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21" ALPINA Classic wheels underlines the fresh design language found throughout the B7 and imparts to it a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

Both standard- and long-wheelbase models will be offered. The BMW ALPINA B7 will make its North American debut at the Chicago International Auto Show and will go on sale at authorized BMW Centers in Spring of 2010.

The B7 sedan is equipped with BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter, all-aluminum, High Precision Direct Injection V-8 engine which has been enhanced by ALPINA and is capable of producing 500 (373kW) horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque. This rear-wheel drive performance/luxury Sedan achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec. With maximum torque available across an unusually broad engine range, from 3,000 to 4,750 rpm, the B7 accelerates effortlessly from virtually any speed.

The B7 sedan is finished with ALPINA aerodynamic developments, including front and rear spoilers which not only enhance the appearance but also improve stability and performance at high speeds. In true "form-follows-function" fashion, the ALPINA front integrates the fresh-air requirements of the transmission and engine oil coolers, which are separated out of the main cooler module for improved efficiency. The spoilers reduce lift at the front by 30% and rear by15%. The exhaust system’s two double tailpipes are seamlessly integrated into the rear bumper. The newest evolution of the traditional 20-spoke ALPINA Classic wheels gives the B7 a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

  • “American Psycho Musical

Serial killer Patrick Bateman is Broadway-bound.

The producers of HBO’s Big Love and the composers who brought us “Spring Awakening are bringing Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho to the New York stage.

A stage adaptation of Ellis’s celebrated novel about a handsome, homicidal Wall Street banker is in the works –featuring a score conceived by composer Duncan Sheik and a stageplay penned by playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa — according to press release issued Tuesday.

“Grammy and Tony award-winning artist Duncan Sheik has signed on to compose the music and lyrics for the highly anticipated stage musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ landmark satire American Psycho. Sheik’s score will channel the spirit of the 1980s alongside celebrated hits from the era, and playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is set to write the book.”

Christian Bale played Bateman in a 2000 film adaptation of the novel.
