    The 61st annual Grand National Roadster Show took place at the Pomona Fairplex this past weekend, playing host to some of the world’s premier hot rods and customs. After our inaugural attendance last year, we made sure to attend again for 2010 and spent an afternoon walking through the various buildings of the world’s longest running indoor car show. Among this year’s highlights included an exhibit featuring the “History of the Race Car” and a hall dedicated to cars featured on the covers of Rod & Custom and Street Rodder.

    The main attraction of the show, however, is when the coveted “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award is given out to one of the nominated hot rods. This year, a ’33 Ford roadster owned by Mike and Dianna Dingman and built by Scott’s Hot Rods and Customs in Oxnard, CA took home top honors.   • Lost, Twitter and the Tragedy of the Commons: A Semi-Modest Proposal [MediaMemo]

    Dear fellow “Lost” fans:

    Hi there! Salivating for tonight’s show? Me too.

    But I have a request. Please hear me out.

    Like you, I’ve invested an embarrassingly substantial number of hours in this thing.  And I can’t wait for one last season with Jack, Locke, et al. (Especially Locke. Can’t get enough Locke).

    But unlike some of you, I’m probably not going to be able to watch each show in real-time. Various life requirements are going to force me to watch at least some of these a day or two later on the DVR (or ABC.com or Hulu in a pinch).

    Which would be fine, except that I’m also on Twitter a lot, and so are many of you. And many of you want to Tweet about the show while it’s running and during its aftermath.

    I don’t know why that is. I get the idea of Twittering along with live communal events  like American Idol or pro football. But you guys realize these shows are taped months ago, right?

    Anyway, I’m not here to judge! Just to ask for your help.

    My ask: It’d be really great if youl folks could lay off the “Lost” Tweets until a few days after each show. Because otherwise, I — and, I suspect many other people, as well — will have to make an unpleasant choice: Stop using Twitter for several days a week, or wade through lots and lots of spoilers. (This is apparently not a Hobbesian Choice but a Morton’s Fork. Thanks, Wikipedia!)

    Yes, I think it’s theoretically possible for me to set up Twitter clients like Tweetdeck strike some “Lost”-related Tweets from my stream. But not all of them.

    I also suppose we could also ask Biz Stone and crew to somehow filter out “Lost” Tweets from the mainstream, but I think those guys have more important stuff to do. (One other alternative would be to ask all you Twittering real-time “Lost” watchers to head somewhere else for a bit, like Hot Potato, which is supposed to work for just this sort of thing. But I can understand if you’re not up for embracing yet another messaging service.)

    So. What do you think ? I’m not asking for much, I think. Just a little near-term restraint. Let’s say two days, max.

    That which lets the rest of us catch up — remember, East Coasters, that the poor folks on the ther side of the country are three hours behind to begin with. And then we can join the rest of you, and we can all discuss this awesome show in 140 characters or less.

  • “Full House” House For Sale…Asking Price $4 Million!

    There’s a little piece of TV history up for grabs — if you’ve got a cool $4 million laying around. The iconic Tanner house, featured in the intro for the 80s/90s TV smash Full House, is on the market, NBC News has learned.

    While all scenes for Full House were shot on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, the Victorian house now for sale was featured during the opening credits of the sitcom — which launched the career of The Olsen Twins when it ran on ABC between 1987-1995. Built in 1906, the “Painted Ladies” structure is located at 722 Steiner St. in San Francisco’s “Alamo Square,” and should only be priced at $1.5 million — based on sales figures for surrounding properties. Of course, its place in pop culture history gives 1906 Steiner the right to demand only the highest bidders.

    “I’m looking forward to finding the next guardian for this special home,” says real-estate agent Bonnie Spindler, who is listing the house.

    We wonder if Uncle Joey still lives in the basement…..


  • For Developers: Windows Mobile 7 development tools coming to Visual Studio 2010 only when WM7 is released

    windows-visual-studio-net-colorful-wallpaper Developers have been concerned by the lack of Windows Mobile development tools in the latest Visual Studio 2010 betas from Microsoft.

    Beta 1 of VS2010 and .NET 4 were made available last May, followed by beta 2 in October. Participants in Microsoft’s Technology Adoption Program and Visual Studio Industry Partners had access to limited community technology previews (CTPs) after the beta 2 release.

    Senior VP of the Microsoft Developer Division S. Somasegar has confirmed that Visual Studio 2010 tooling for Windows Mobile 7 and smart devices will be made available after the official release of Visual Studio 2010.

    Somasegar said it will be released as out-of-band in conjunction with the technology itself. 

    Microsoft is slated to offer a public release candidate (RC) of Visual Studio 2010 this month, delaying the formal "launch" of the upcoming IDE and .NET Framework 4 by a few weeks, according to the company. If Microsoft adheres to that schedule, VS2010 should be released to manufacturing (RTM) by April 12, the new launch date.

    Visual Studio 2010 is still waiting for Silverlight 4, expected still in the first half of the year.

    The Visual Studio Magazine article notes developers can expect to learn more about Windows Mobile 7 at the World Mobile Congress later this month and at MIX10 in March.

  • PM calls on President Zardari to discuss various issues

    areview.co.cc: President Asif Ali Zardari and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain have restricted leaders from passing inflammatory comments. Prime Minister (PM) Yoursaf Raza Gilani telephoned the MQM leader Altaf Hussain and the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah to discuss the law and order situation prevailing in Karachi. PM and Altaf Husain have agreed to continue the process of political reconciliation. CM Sindh has been advised by PM, to take measures to bring Karachi’s situation back to normal . According to our sources, the meeting between the President and the PM in the presidency reviewed several issues including the ongoing wave of violence in Karachi, implementation of decision on NRO and the progress in War on terror. In the meeting it has also been decided that concrete steps would be taken to improve the law and order situation in Karachi. President Zardari has spoken to provincial minister Zulfikar Mirza and Aga Siraj Durani.

  • ANP was neglected on local body government issue, says Zahid Khan

    areview.co.cc: Awami National Party (ANP) has warned of separation from the coalition government. ANP Secretary Information Zahid Khan has said that ANP was not consulted during the meeting of the core committee on the issue of Local Body Government. Zahid Khan said that during the core committee meeting a political party was imposed on the city that is not acceptable. He also said that Pukhtoons are victims of target killing in Karachi. If similar situation prevails then retaliation would not be limited to the city. Senator Haji Adil said that there is no point of continuing with a coalition government that cannot protect the lives of ANP activist. He said that the decision of the core committee of the two parties is not acceptable. ANP would give up its single ministry in Sindh.

  • North Waziristan: US drone attack kills 10 in Datta Khel

    areview.co.cc: At least 10 people were killed in a Drone attack on the district of Data Khel in North Waziristan. According to official sources, 13 missiles were fired on a compound located 40 km from Miran Shah in the district Data Khel at the area of Dehghan consequently 10 people were killed. After the incident, a sense of panic and fear prevailed in the area and Drone planes were flying in the area.

  • Coffee assault could net five years in prison for Crystal Lake homeless man

    WOODSTOCK — A Crystal Lake homeless man faces up to five years in prison after admitting he tossed hot coffee in a Starbucks barista’s face.

    Jonathan A. Pease, 28, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and criminal damage to property today. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped an additional count of aggravated battery and a misdemeanor count of aggravated assault.

    The agreement did not affect the sentencing range Pease faces. He could be sentenced to probation or to between two and five years in prison.

    His attorney, Assistant Public Defender Jason Majer, said Pease will undergo an evaluation considering whether he would be a good candidate for intensive probation.

    Pease went into the Starbucks in downtown Crystal Lake about 7 a.m. Nov. 14 and intimidated an employee who gave him a cup of coffee, police said.

    He remained agitated and tossed the cup of coffee in the face of a second employee who approached him to try to calm him, police said. She suffered second-degree burns, according to court records.

    In the ruckus, Pease also damaged a plastic supply holder on the counter, according to court records.

    Two off-duty police officers, who were in the coffee shop by coincidence, subdued him and detained him until Crystal Lake police arrived.

  • Iran condemns Israel over Hamas commander death

    areview.co.cc: Iran supports the claim that a senior Hamas military commander has been assassinated by Israel in Dubai. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said that the martyr of military commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh is an example Israels sponsorship to state terrorism. Israel has rejected the claim.

  • Concorde crash trial begins in France

    areview.co.cc: A trial began over the crash of an Air France Concorde in July 2000. The jet took off in flames from Paris airport and crashed shortly afterwards, killing 113 people. Those accused include US airline Continental, two of its technical staff, two former Concorde engineers and a former French civil aviation official.

  • SAF Games: Pakistan continues winning streak

    areview.co.cc: Pakistani players continued their winning streak on the fourth day of the SAF games. SAF games are being held in Dhaka where Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in Hockey by 3-0 in which Abdul Qyoum scored 1 goal while Wasif Sadiq scored two goals. In wrestling host nation was beaten by 11-17. Pakistan defeated Srilanka by 40-17 in handball. The total number of medals won by Pakistan now stands at 20.

  • L.A. police arrest man suspected of molesting girls in Mid-City area

    L.A. police detectives have arrested a man they believe is responsible for molesting at least four girls over the last two years in the Mid-City area.

    Police officials plan to identify the man Tuesday afternoon at a news conference. The man allegedly approached the girls while they were walking and enticed them into apartment buildings, where he attempted to sexually assault them.

    The L.A. City Council, at the request of Councilman Ed Reyes, had offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the man’s conviction.

    Detectives had acquired video showing the suspect getting out of a 1990s Mazda Millennia with a sun or moon roof before attacking a girl last November.
    The 10-year-old was walking to school near Beverly Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue when she was approached by a man who engaged her in conversation.

    The man lured her into an apartment complex in the 100 block of South Commonwealth Avenue, which he entered by waiting for someone to exit through a rear stairwell. When the person exited, he pretended that he had forgotten his key and walked in with the girl, detectives said.

    The suspect guided the girl up the stairwell to the roof area, where he attempted to sexually assault her. The girl begged the suspect to stop and repeatedly pushed him away. Investigators said the girl’s "persistent actions caused the suspect to stop and leave the location."

    A security video captured the victim with the suspect and later the suspect running alone northbound on Commonwealth Avenue.
    Detectives believe the suspect is also responsible for a July 10, 2009, attack on another 10-year-old girl walking in the area of 3rd and Hoover streets.

    The suspect approached her and enticed her into an apartment building in the
    300 block of South Hoover Street, where he took her to the roof. But detectives said something apparently startled the suspect, who suddenly fled and left the victim behind.

    The investigators connected two similar crimes that occurred in 2008. An 8-year-old girl was walking in the 600 block of South Burlington Avenue in April, at about 7:30 a.m., when the suspect approached her and led her into a nearby apartment building, where he attempted to sexually assault her in a secluded area.

    A similar incident occurred in February when a 9-year-old girl was walking in the area of James M. Wood Boulevard and Hoover Street when the suspect approached her on foot, spoke to her and eventually pulled her into an apartment building in the 2700 block of James M. Wood Boulevard. Detectives say he then attempted to sexually assault her.

  • Engadget editor: Why I turned off comments

    Gearhead megasite Engadget, which attracts millions of readers every month, and sometimes in a single day, disabled comments on its posts this morning in response to a barrage of what the editor calls “trollish” comments in the wake of the site’s extensive iPad-related coverage last week.

    “We have a huge readership, but the vast majority of our readers do not comment,” Engadget editor in chief Joshua Topolsky told me over the phone. “But we’ve had an influx of new readers due to our iPad coverage last week, which blew away our previous [traffic] expectations.

    “Unfortunately, we’ve also had an influx of readers who are very trollish.”

    What does it mean to be trollish? “They’re not coming here to talk about technology,” Topolsky said. “They’re coming to incite arguments. They’ll post off-topic things like ‘VAIOs suck, Macs rule,’ or ‘Macs are gay.’ They’ll get racist or sexist just to be inflammatory.

    “I can handle the flamewars. But in the past few days we’ve had attacks against our readers and our staff that were personal. One guy posted page after page of ‘fuck you, bitch’ to one of our female editors.” Engadget’s editors delete such comments.

    The Apple flamewars go both ways on the site, with Topolsky’s trolls coming from both pro and anti-Apple camps. In fact, a common insult hurled in the comments is that Engadget is being paid by Apple to write lots of positive coverage. “We get that a lot,” he said. “‘Why don’t you change your name to Applegadget?’”

    “The amount of Apple stuff we don’t cover is amazing,” he added. “We didn’t run that third-hand quote from Steve Jobs supposedly saying the tablet is “the most important thing I’ve ever done. Did he even say that?”

    Pointedly, Topolsky insisted that advertiser pressure was not a factor in his decision. “It doesn’t even play into it.” He said the site’s previous editors, Peter Rojas and Ryan Block, also disabled comments a few times for similar reasons.

    But how does turning off comments for a couple of days fix the problem, I asked? Doesn’t it just send the trolls elsewhere to do the same thing? “Honestly it’s a bit of an experiment,” Joel answered. What he didn’t want to say out loud was: Engadget is a much, much bigger spotlight for commenters than TUAW or MacRumors. “I’m not trying to send them to another site, I’m trying to diminish their interest. I’m hoping they’ll get bored and decide to stop commenting.”

  • Star Trek Online starts boldly today with a million registered users

    Not many games can boast having a million registered users by the time they formally launch. Then again, there’s only one Star Trek Online game.

    After decades of TV, movies, cartoons, and books, Star Trek fans finally get an online game in a persistent galaxy, starting today. This massively multiplayer game could accommodate as many Trekkies as want to sign up. This game has been in the works for a few years at Atari’s Cryptic Studios division in Los Gatos, Calif., and the launch of the game represents the final frontier in games for the Star Trek franchise.

    In the game, players start out as a Starfleet officer, choosing specialties such as science (Star Trek’s Spock character), engineering (Scotty), or tactical (Worf from Star Trek the Next Generation). The players can progress to become a starship captain. You can fight other players in fleet battles in space or beam down to planets to do missions with Away Teams on the ground. Check out our preview story and video of the game.

    The game tries to be faithful to the franchise, with all the right characters, races, costume designs, starships and back stories for the various planets in the galaxy. The game is set in the year 2409, about 30 years after the storyline of the 2002 film, Star Trek Nemesis. The game has all of the canon of the original Star Trek, including the events of the Kirk-Spock era, the events of Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise. Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock, provides the voice narration, and Zachary Quinto, who played Spock in the Star Trek film in 2009, provides the voice of the game’s Emergency Medical Hologram tutorial character.

    As you can see, Atari and Cryptic pulled out all of the stops for this game. It will be interesting if it generates a huge audience. Star Trek is an untapped market and it is probably one of the few properties that could challenge the dominance of Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft game, which has around 11.5 million subscribers. Another big challenger coming is the Star Wars-based MMO, The Old Republic, which is being developed by BioWare. The game runs on a PC and costs $50, plus $12.99 to $14.99 a month for a subscription. It is rated T for teens 13 and up.

    The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is creeping back into the news at a steady rate, meaning that Team Pentastar must be fairly close to releasing its first all-new product in some time (read: forever). Just yesterday, we received what appears to be an early peek into Grand Cherokee pricing, and now we have access to a cornucopia of pics of a pair of Jeep’s finest traversing the fabled Rubicon Trail.

    According to the Jeep Jamboree Facebook page, the 2011 Grand Cherokees were being driven by a group of Jeep engineers testing the vehicle before they go on sale later this year. Since the Grand Cherokee is supposed to be the chief of the Jeep lineup, we’re guessing that the rough-and-ready SUVs need to absolutely ace the Rubicon to earn the all-important Trail Rated badge.   • President Obama Is Preparing To Impose Martial Law

    Some of you are asking, “Carl, how could you make such an outrageous statement?”

    Well, just as dark clouds indicate that it is about to rain, when all of the signs point at something, it’s not paranoia, simply an acceptance of the facts.

    Barack Obama recently, without any publicity (that should set off alarm bells by itself) signed an Executive Order establishing a “Council Of Governors.”

    If you want to read Obama’s latest assault on the United States Constitution, it can be found here.

    OK, first off, I call it Obama’s latest violation of the Constitution for the following reasons:

    If you read the Executive Order carefully, you will see that is an attempt to put the National Guard, units which are based in individual states, under the control of the federal government. This is in direct violation of the 10th Amendment, which reads as follows:

    “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

    In other words Mr. President, the Constitution doesn’t give you the right to do this!

    As far as this un-Constitutional document being enforced in the case of a national emergency, it fails to spell out just what would prompt the enforcement of its provisions, which in my opinion, the way I’m reading it, a violation of the 14th Amendment:

    “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.
    No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

  • Glam Media On A Roll: Raises $50 Million In Private Equity At $750 Million Valuation

    Glam Media, a vertical advertising network, has raised its fifth round of venture capital – $50 million from aeris CAPITAL, a Switzerland and Silicon Valley based private equity fund. The company is not disclosing the valuation of the round, but it is rumored to be around $750 million.

    Glam’s last major funding was a $85 million combined debt and equity round in early 2008, two years ago, that valued the company at around $500 million.

    $10 million – $15 million of this new round will be used to purchase stock from existing employees/founders as well as early venture investors. The rest of the round will be used for investment in the business and strategic acquisitions.

    Profitable and Rolling

    Glam is also announcing EBITDA profitability on North American operations and break-even results globally for Q4 2009. 2009 revenue was likely around $55 million, up from $40 million in 2008.

    The company attracts nearly 160 million unique monthly worldwide visitors to the sites it controls and represents, putting it at no. 14 on Comscore’s top 100 worldwide Internet properties. Those visitors racked up over 2.5 billion page views and 2.5 billion minutes spent on the site. The network includes over 1,400 publishers and other content sites.

    Glam attracts around 72 million montly U.S. visitors to its site, more than double competitor iVillage’s 33 million. The company, which is headquartered in Silicon Valley and New York City, is clearly gearing up for an IPO in the next 12 – 18 months.
