  • Android ported to Pandora, in the name of science or something

Okay, folks, you know the drill: here lies new hardware, may we see it hacked to run unintended software. Today’s contestant is Pandora, once thought to be relegated to the realm of vaporware and now in full production. One of the lucky, open source-friendly buyers decided that the native LInux distribution was just not for his liking, and instead opted for Google’s little green man mobile OS. Touchscreen support isn’t there yet, but you gotta start somewhere, right? Video of Android on Pandora after the break. Now we wait until the time we can gleefully say “Pandora (the app) on Android on Pandora” while we listen to some rocking streamed tunes.

  • Wacom Intuos4 succumbs to peer pressure, goes wireless

Okay, so maybe there’s not an overwhelming group of “peers” for Wacom’s Intuos4 graphics tablet, but we’re still kind of saddened to see a device that hardly seems to require wirelessness donning a Bluetooth connectivity option and following the wireless peripherals crowd. Ah well, guess we can’t grumble too much about choice, so if you have some freaky workplace scenarios that require your tablet to be untethered (to up to 10 meters), you should be circling the latter part of March and expecting to pay around $400 for the privilege, or about $50 more than the wired Medium tablet. No luck if you were after the other sizes, unfortunately — you’ll just have to learn to love that wire.

  • Toyota’s remedy for recalled pedals announced, dealers to remain open extended hours

Jim Lentz, TMA USA President and COO, apologizes – Click above to watch video after the jump

Toyota announced early this morning exactly how it’s going to repair 2.3 million Toyota brand vehicles affected by its latest sticking accelerator pedal recall. The fix involves installing a “precision-cut steel reinforcement bar” into the pedal assembly that will reduce friction between a shoe and the adjoining surface, the place where Toyota has found these defective pedals to be sticking. The automaker says the fix is “effective and simple” and has been rigorously tested on pedal assemblies that have been known to stick. Since words only paint so clear a picture, we’ll be searching for more visual evidence today of how the repair works, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, Toyota says owners of vehicles affected by the sticking pedal recall can expect a letter by mail sometime in the next couple of days with instructions on how to coordinate their repair with a dealer. Dealers, meanwhile, will remain open extended hours to perform the repairs, some even 24 hours a day. And for those owners whose vehicles are affected by both the floormat recall and sticking pedal recall, Toyota will try to coordinate only one trip to the dealer for both fixes.

Follow the jump for Toyota’s official statement as well as a video released today in which Toyota Motor Sales President and COO Jim Lentz expresses some heart felt apologies to current customers.

Ahí quizás si podríamos considerar competencia a Ning.

  • Morgan Stanley: Asian Economic Momentum Has Stalled, Markets Soon To Follow

    chart

Why are Asian markets suddenly looking a bit wobbly?

Morgan Stanley macro strategy analyst Rashique Rahman discusses some of what’s going on.

The bottom line: the big economic we comeback is slowing down:

    ——-

Upside macro fundamentals momentum looks to be stalling for EM, following a sharp
improvement since early 2009. We gauge this with our Macro-Dynamic Trend
Indicator (MDTI). It measures the rate of change in key macro variables*.
Market momentum tends to follow trends in the MDTI, with a lag –suggesting that
there is still some upside resistance to asset prices in the coming weeks. We show
the MDTI against EM sovereign credit spread levels (Exhibit 1). Notwithstanding a
near-term market rebound from the recent pullback –which we expect –this is
consistent with our view of a correction in early 2Q.

    chart

First, on current trends MDTI would be falling into 2Q. Second, this would occur at a
time of what we believe may be reduced fund inflows in 2Q, providing less underlying
technical support to the market. Investor exposure to the market has already
increased. There is scope to add more long-side risk, but the technical position is
nowhere near as sound as it was at the end of last year.

Third, we anticipate a sharp rise in long-end US rates, which would crowd out other investment.
We combine the MDTI with our EM exposure indicator (EMEI) to gauge the
combination of fundamental and technical momentum on market direction. This EM
gravity index looks to have peaked and has declined, heading towards a downside
bias for the market (Exhibit 2). Arguably, the recent sell-off has taken lots of steam
out of any future correction, but these fundamental and technical dynamics could still
prove to be a drag on market performance in the coming weeks.

What is contributing to the peaking out in the MDTI? From a regional perspective,
non-Japan Asia (AXJ) is showing a decisive decline in fundamentals momentum, led
by higher inflation and a deterioration in trade balances. The other two regions’
macro momentum remain steady to higher, with particular strengthseen in Latin
America for Colombia and Mexico and for CEEMEA, Poland and Russia.

If you have $15,000 to spare for a new gadget, this might be of interest to you: JVC Japan today announced [press release in English] the DLA-SH7NL, a video projector that features a resolution of almost 10 megapixels (4,096×2,400, to be exact). That’s more than four times full HD.

Add to that a native contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and a 330W lamp that produces 5,000 lumens and you have a pretty powerful projector to play with. JVC says its D-ILA (Digital Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier) technology makes it possible to display two or four screens in WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) and full HD resolution at the same time.

Buyers get a USB port, four DVI-D interfaces and LAN, but the projection lens isn’t included in the final price (which, in Japan, will be around $15,000).

JVC plans to start selling the DLA-SH7NL in Japan at the beginning of next month, mainly targeting places like museums or medical institutions. The company hasn’t said yet whether the device will ever be available outside Japan as well.

  • iPad’s multifunction appeal and sub-$500 price point a formula for disruptive technology

    Filed under:

T minus a little over a month and a half until retail liftoff of the Apple iPad and, similar to the launch of the iPhone 3 years ago, the device is not without its share of criticism — be it the lack of support for multitasking or the missing front facing camera (or any camera, for that matter). However, it’s unlikely that anything short of a sub-$1,000 multitouch cancer-curing device could have lived up to expectations, for the hype coming into the keynote was of epic proportions.

Expectations aside, however, the iPad’s price point and feature set put Apple in a position to disrupt the low-end notebook computer market, while also providing it a foot in the door in the eBook market as well as traditional print media.

Though multipurpose in functionality, the iPad will likely find its largest appeal in the low-end notebook computing space, primarily the sub-11 inch variants dubbed “netbooks.” As implied in the nomenclature, netbooks place less of a focus on raw computing horsepower and instead aim toward providing an extremely portable and affordable means to surf the net. While the ultra-compact form factor of netbooks makes them extremely portable, it brings compromises — namely cramped keyboards that, unless you’re an Oompa Loompa or haven’t yet reached middle school, are difficult to type on. While the iPad lacks a built-in physical keyboard (it’s an optional accessory), its multitouch-enabled 9.7 inch LED display provides a clearly differentiated and, on initial impression, a superior web browsing experience.

While still priced at a premium over most netbooks, the iPad’s $499 opening price point places it in the pricing pantheon of affordable computing, as crossing this sub-$500 psychological purchasing barrier increases its attractiveness in competing for the mindshare of consumers considering a netbook.

With the iPad, Apple is also looking to make inroads into the eBook reader market, where it will be joining Amazon and Sony, two of that market’s bigger players. Unlike the iPad, Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Reader offer a “book-like” experience through e-ink technology — in contrast to the LED-backlit screen of the iPad. Despite the virtues of e-ink and carrying hundreds of books with you, eBook readers haven’t yet hit mainstream status, in spite of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ claim of selling “millions” of Kindles.

While the reading experience on the iPad — most notably eye strain and battery life — has yet to be thoroughly fleshed out, the device’s other features will help mask whatever e-reading deficiencies it has against existing e-ink based offerings. Thus, whatever inroads the iPad makes within the eBook reader market will likely be paved by its other virtues.

Although the potential addressable market for a dedicated eBook reader is likely much smaller than those considering a notebook computer, the iPad’s $499 opening price point also produces a purchasing conundrum for the former. At $499, the device is priced within reach of the Kindle DX’s $489 price tag, while also providing the ancillary benefits of a multitouch portable computing platform.

Such an approach may be the best way to grow the eBook category mainstream, and is in line with Apple thinking. At Apple’s September 2009 special event, Steve Jobs noted that while “there will always be dedicated devices, and [that] they may have a few advantages in doing just one thing…general-purpose devices will win the day because…people just probably aren’t willing to pay for a dedicated device.” And while the iPad lacks an e-ink based screen, its color LED-backlit multitouch display could provide consumers with new ways to consume traditional media (newspapers, magazines, etc.) and traditional media companies new avenues for revenues.

But at the end of the day, the Apple iPad is a computer and, as such, could possibly serve as a substitute for a MacBook or MacBook Pro purchase for some consumers. For many, computing could boil down to surfing the web (i.e., “checking my Facebook”), email, and basic productivity apps, such as word processing and spreadsheets.

However, the slightest footstep outside of this sandbox demands more, be it a video editor demanding more processing power to render and store h.264 videos or a college student who needs a torrent or P2P client and codec support to play DivX videos. Add to this formula the iPad’s lack of support for multitasking as well as its smaller screen display, and the potential for cannibalization is likely marginal.

Yes, many may have found the iPad announcement underwhelming. But expectations aside, the device is a misfit with its cross category functional appeal. And it’s these misfit ways that, coupled with a competitive opening price point, arm it with great potential to disrupt multiple categories and serve as another avenue to drive growth for Apple.

  • 25 Ways to Have the Best 2010

By Greg Melville for Men’s Life Today

News flash: We regret to inform you that any unrequested email offering ways to lose pounds and gain muscle as you sleep — for only $19.99! — is a scam (which rhymes with “spam.” Coincidence? Not!).

Fortunately, making good on that new year’s resolution to tone your body and prime your health doesn’t have to involve an expensive gym membership and a crazy amount of free time. Simply modify a few habits and add some simple exercises — even if they’re at your desk — into your busy day, and you’ll notice a major difference.

These 25 realistic fitness and health tips, put together by a pair of nationally respected physical trainers, are aimed at busy people on a budget. Consider it your own personal health care reform for 2010.

    Preparation:

    1. Look in the mirror. Assess your fitness and health goals. Decide how much you want to exercise, and commit. Exercise is more easily managed when it’s divided into smaller chunks throughout the day, says Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise.

    Morning:

    2. Get up and get moving. “Do yoga for five or 10 minutes. Or walk your dog for two quick laps around your building or block,” says Gregory Florez, CEO of Fit Advisor health coaching services. “This wakes you up much like the way caffeine does — and you won’t have the drop in energy later. It also gets blood flowing.”

    3. Don’t give up. Studies have shown that you need to repeat a routine (like morning exercising) for three weeks before it becomes a habit. “Most people start a routine and fall off. Give it those three weeks,” says Florez.

    4. Start modestly. If you commit to running 5 miles a day five days a week, you’re bound to quit. Begin with, say, 15 minutes on the stair-climber, two or three days a week. “Once you start achieving smaller goals, it’s easier to work your way to bigger goals. Committing to do something a couple times a week is attainable,” says McCall.

    5. Eat breakfast daily (as per mom). Breakfast flips on your metabolism like a furnace switch, so your body fires up and starts burning calories. McCall recommends a carbohydrates-protein combo. On Sunday nights, he premixes yogurt, granola and berries, and stores them in a container for five days’ worth of quick breakfasts.

    At the Office:

    6. Stretch. Especially if you’re tired, stretching will help you stay awake and limber. McCall recommends simply standing up, reaching your left hand above your right shoulder and slowly twisting your torso left as far as you can, then right. Repeat with right hand, left shoulder.

    7. Breathe. Make an appointment every hour to stand up at your desk and take a few deep breaths. “You’ve got to schedule it with the same rigor you schedule any business meeting,” says Florez. “It’s important to re-oxygenate your body.”

    8. Pack snacks. “I bring fruit and nuts and seeds with me, and keep them in my desk all week. Foods from fresh, whole sources have a lower glycemic index than sugary foods so you don’t get that high energy spike, then a big crash,” says McCall.

    9. Go the distance. Use the bathroom farthest from your desk to get in some extra walking.

    10. Drink water all day. Before lunch, down 12 ounces. “We often feel hungry when we’re just dehydrated,” says Florez. “Be that nerdy guy with the reusable water bottle at the desk.”

    11. Walk it off. After lunch, take a few laps around the building.

    12. Walk and talk. Got a Bluetooth headset? Then head outside and make a phone call while taking a stroll. “You’re cheating your body into really small chunks of exercise throughout the day when you otherwise won’t make the time,” says Florez.

    13. Accessorize with exercise. Stash a set of rubber exercise tubes at your office so you can do chest presses, rows or squats right at your desk — two or three times a day. “That way you get your strength training in, in an accumulated way, throughout the day,” says Florez.

    Evening:

    14. Get these: A medicine ball, balance ball and the TRX Suspension System (Fitness Anywhere Web site). With them, says McCall, your aerobic and strength options are almost limitless. (Many books and Web sites offer workout instructions for medicine balls and balance balls, and a personal trainer can also create a personal plan for you. The TRX system comes with its own instructional DVD.)

    15. Befriend the TV. Either take advantage of the on-demand workout videos offered by many cable providers or get a workout DVD for living room workouts, urges Florez.

    16. Don’t just sit there. If you’re watching TV, get off the couch during commercials. “Knock out two to three exercises at each break. By the end of the hour, you’ve hit every muscle group,” says Florez.

    17. Do the balance ball pike exercise. First, in case you’re wondering, a “pike” is an exercise that works the abs and shoulders. Now on to this one: Facing the floor, rest your thighs on the ball and put the palms of your hands on the ground, arms extended (like you’re at the top of a push-up). Raise your rear in the air, allowing the ball to roll toward your feet, and keep your legs straight, says McCall. Do three sets of five. Feel the burn.

    18. Do the medicine ball wood chop. Squat down, legs spread shoulder-width apart. Hold the ball between your knees; as you stand up, grasp the ball with your hands, swinging it overhead, says McCall. Do one to three sets of 15.

    19. Exercise intervals. Intervals are essential for strength work or a cardio workout. “Go hard for an exercise for two to three minutes, dial back, then up the exertion again,” says Florez. Do this two or three times a week. It not only breaks up the monotony of always exercising at the same pace but also benefits your cardiovascular system.

    Sleep

    20. Set a consistent sleep schedule. Your body will thank you for it, and you’ll have more energy to exercise. Yes, eight hours a night is important, and no, you can’t make up for lost sleep during the weekends, says McCall.

    21. Close the fridge by 8 p.m. “Don’t go to bed on a full stomach. It’ll interrupt your sleep cycle,” says Florez.

    22. Wind down. “[Stretching before bed] becomes a signal to your body that it’s time to wind down,” says Florez. (He recommends enlisting a personal trainer to create a stretching routine.)

    23. Get the TV out of your bedroom. Too much visual stimulation will make for lousy sleep.

    24. Set bedroom boundaries. Don’t bring work into your chambers. “Your bedroom should only be for sleeping, having sex or relaxing,” says Florez.

    25. Create a nightly routine. That’s how your parents used to get you to
sleep. “Sometimes it’s a really hot shower. Sometimes it’s reading fiction — something
that will calm the body down,” says Florez.

This could easily result in tangible bailout plans released by the EC, despite repeated affirmations from the Greek finance minister that Greece doesn’t require any help from other Eurozone economies.

Problem is, as a part of the euro currency system, it isn’t Greece’s matter to decide:

The Economist: Judgment will be passed on the Greek government’s budget-cutting plans by the European Commission on Wednesday February 3rd. • Rosenberg: Here’s Four Reasons Why That GDP Number Was A Joke

    cnbc_david_rosenberg

Almost since the beginning of the recession, analysts have been forecasting a very sharp rebound in GDP due to the inventory correction.

That’s exactly what we experienced with Friday’s report of 5.7% growth argues Gluskin-Sheff’s David Rosenberg:

The growth bulls are out in full force today in the aftermath of the headline 5.7% QoQ annualized print on fourth quarter GDP growth in the U.S. We offer a slightly different perspective.

First, the report was dominated by a huge inventory adjustment — not the onset of a new inventory cycle, but a transitory realignment of stocks to sales. Excluding the inventory contribution, GDP would have advanced at a much more tepid 2.2% QoQ annual rate, not really that much better than the soft 1.5% reading in the third quarter.

Second, it was a tad strange to have had inventories contribute half to the GDP tally, and at the same time see import growth cut in half last quarter. Normally, inventory adds are at least partly fuelled by purchases of foreign-made inputs. Not this time. Strip out inventories and the foreign trade sector, we see that domestic demand growth in the fourth quarter actually slowed to a paltry 1.7% annual rate from 2.3% in the third quarter. Some recovery. Based on some simulations we ran, demand growth with all the massive doses of fiscal and monetary stimulus should already be running in excess of a 10% annual rate. So, the real question that nobody seems to ask is why it is that underlying demand conditions are still so benign more than two years after the greatest stimulus of all time. The answer is that this epic credit collapse is a pervasive drain on spending and very likely has another five years to play out.

Third, if you believe the GDP data — remember, there are more revisions to come — then you de facto must be of the view that productivity growth is soaring at over a 6% annual rate. No doubt productivity is rising — just look at the never-ending slate of layoff announcements. But we came off a cycle with no technological advance and no capital deepening, so it is hard to believe that productivity at this time is growing at a pace that is four times the historical norm. Sorry, but we’re not buyers of that view. In the fourth quarter, aggregate private hours worked contracted at a 0.5% annual rate and what we can tell you is that such a decline in labour input has never before, scanning over 50 years of data, coincided with a GDP headline this good. Normally, GDP growth is 1.7% when hours worked is this weak, and that is exactly the trend that was depicted this week in the release of the Chicago Fed’s National Activity Index, which was widely ignored. On the flip side, when we have in the past seen GDP growth come in at or near a 5.7% annual rate, what is typical is that hours worked grows at a 3.7% rate. No matter how you slice it, the GDP number today represented not just a rare but an unprecedented event, and as such, we are willing to treat the report with an entire saltshaker — a few grains won’t do.

Fourth, while the Chicago PMI and the revision to the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index also served up positive surprises, the “hard” data in terms of housing starts, home sales and consumer spending suggest that there is little, if any, momentum heading into early 2010. Moreover, the prospect that we see a discernible slowing in the pace of economic activity this quarter and a relapse in the second quarter is non trivial, in my view — by then, today’s flashy headline will be a distant memory.

Meanwhile, Nouriel Roubini — not someone who typically sees eye to eye with Rosenberg — said the same thing at Davos, that it was all inventories.

Xylo: TD experience was good. Spacious and VFM vehicle. Safety, FE and city driving were concerns.

Scorpio: I did Xylo and Scorpio TDs back-to-back. Wasn’t I taken over Scorpio mania after TD? I had almost thought this is going to be my next vehicle. But the top end was going way over budget 10>. Also FE was a concern.

Punto: We did a couple of Punto TDs. The HM wasn’t impressed with the interiors and space. HM gave a verdict that our next car has to be a sedan.

Verna: We went to Modi Hyundai show room in Thane. Both myself and wife were bold over by a Golder color verna on display. The exterior and interiors was simply marvelous. Next day the guy got home a CRDi for a TD. The drive and acceleration was like rocket. I was bold over. But the moment we reached 90-100 I was feeling unsafe and as if I am floating. We took all TD cars thru a series of humps at a good speed. With Verna HM got a shaky feeling. Wasn’t impressed with suspension. Also the sudden acceleration brought by Turbo was giving nausiatic feeling in rear. Price was on higher side compared to the features.

Linea: Asked Balaji Cars for Linea TD. They promptly came home. We took all TD cars thru a series of humps at a good speed. With Linea, wife didn’t notice the humps. After we went past she was asking if the humps had gone by. The boot space was superb. Rear seat comfort and driving pleasure were unmatched. Features at the price were unmatched. So final verdict Linea MJD.

We did all TDs at Thane, but we belong to Nagpur hence vehicle delivery was going to happen in Nagpur. In December Fiat Launched exchange offer for Linea. I had a M-800 which I was trying to dispose and this offer couldn’t have come at a better time. On 15-Dec we booked MJD E-Pack FTA color. Then the wait started. On 22-Dec the sales guy tells me that Fiat has stopped production and FTA color is not available in E-Pack. Its available in Dyn,Emotion. Again discussion and HM doesn’t want to compromise on variant. So we decide with our next choice F. Red. Vehicle arrived on 3-Jan. Went to Nagpur on 8-Jan. All delivery fomalities completed and took delivery on 10-Jan.

With family and parents drove the beauty to Thane. Nagpur-thane 850Kms drive game me 19+ FE which is simply amazing.

    +ve:
    – Excellent suspension and handling
    – Blue&Me is real boon. During Nagpur-Thane drive we were receiving calls from family members and all of us were enjoying the conversations.
    – Boot Space
    – Looks its sure is a looker.

    -ve:
    – Low GC
The fuel line plastic cover came off just after leaving Jalna. Came back to Tata Dealer in Jalna and after inspection found that the plastic locks that hold the cover had broken. The Jalna one was a TASS not a TAFE. He removed the cover and asked me to proceed with journey. Its not a big deal and it can be replaced after going to Thane or during 1st service.
    – Rear space

    Accesories:
I have done seat covers and customized interior painting to match the seat covers. Haven’t taken the pics yet. Will post them soon.

In 3 weeks the vehicle has done 1800 Kms. Doing a daily 2-way office commute of 50KMs and I am getting 18+ FE.

    More later.
