  • BRING IT ON: Ed Miliband declares war on climate change sceptics by Juliette Jowit, environment editor, The Observer

Article Tags: BBC, Bring It On, Front Page News, Headline Story, Updated

Image AttachmentThe climate secretary, Ed Miliband, last night warned of the danger of a public backlash against the science of global warming in the face of continuing claims that experts have manipulated data.

In an exclusive interview with the Observer, Miliband spoke out for the first time about last month’s revelations that climate scientists had withheld and covered up information and the apology made by the influential UN climate body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which admitted it had exaggerated claims about the melting of Himalayan glaciers.

The perceived failure of global talks on combating climate change in Copenhagen last month has also been blamed for undermining public support. But in the government’s first high-level recognition of the growing pressure on public opinion, Miliband declared a “battle” against the “siren voices” who denied global warming was real or caused by humans, or that there was a need to cut carbon emissions to tackle it.

“It’s right that there’s rigour applied to all the reports about climate change, but I think it would be wrong that when a mistake is made it’s somehow used to undermine the overwhelming picture that’s there,” he said.

“We know there’s a physical effect of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leading to higher temperatures, that’s a question of physics; we know CO2 concentrations are at their highest for 6,000 years; we know there are observed increases in temperatures; and we know there are observed effects that point to the existence of human-made climate change. That’s what the vast majority of scientists tell us.”

Mistakes and attempts to hide contradictory data had to be seen in the light of the thousands of pages of evidence in the IPCC’s four-volume report in 2007, said Miliband. The most recent accusation about the panel’s work is that its chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, may have known before the Copenhagen summit that its assessment report had seriously exaggerated the rate of melting of the Himalayan glaciers.

However, Miliband was adamant that the IPCC was on the right track. “It’s worth saying that no doubt when the next report comes out it will suggest there have been areas where things have been happening more dramatically than the 2007 report implied,” he said.

The danger of climate scepticism was that it would undermine public support for unpopular decisions needed to curb carbon emissions, including the likelihood of higher energy bills for households, and issues such as the visual impact of wind turbines, said Miliband, who is also energy secretary.

  • A trip to Bhutan that led to Nepal – Guns, Buddha and BHP

I have always wondered how it would be to drive into another country by road and my added facination for the North East of the
country culminated in my planning a trip to Bhutan. The trip ultimately fell apart at Varanasi and we modified our trip to Nepal
instead. This is a account of how and what happened along with some important event markers.
The trip would be on my ’91 Gypsy and accompanying me would be my friend and partner of many road trips, Santosh.
We planned too leave on 23rd Jan and return by 30th after Santosh flew in from Hyderabad on 22nd. The trip was planned with
generous input from Ashit who has lived in Bhutan for 4 years and had planned and executed the flawless trip to Bhutan in December.
    Our route was to be:
New Delhi – Agra – Kanpur – Varanasi – Gaya ( NH 2) – Nalanda – Purnea – Siliguri – Phuentsholing (NH 31) and then on to Thimpu.
I met up with Ashit and planned the entire trip and armed with his kind offer to stay at his place in Thimpu, I waited for Santosh to
    happen.
This is when things started falling apart and kind of set the tone for the rest of the trip. Santosh was to take off from Hyderabad at 9:30
pm on 22nd and as things would have it he left Hyderabad only at 11 due fog in Delhi. I reached the airport to recieve him only ot be told
the flight was diverted to Jaipur, a event that could candel the whole trip as it ment he wouldnt be in the city till the end of next day
leaving not enough time to do the trip. I reached home frustrated only to get a call from Santosh that he had landed, the trip was on !
We reached home from the airport at 3 am and this meant that our early morning start was screwed. We could only leave by 1 in the
afternoon on 23rd and left Delhi in a hurry to make up for lost time.
Time and Date: 2:25 pm 23rd Jan
    Place: Greater Kailash 2
    ODO : 7455
    Leg Distance: 0
    Average Speed: 0
    Kilometers in Trip: 0
Started from Delhi at the worst possible time, peak traffic leading out of Delhi slowing us down to a crawl. Reached Ballabgarh amid
bad traffic and stopped to pick up fruits. The traffic pettered out as we gunned out of the city and was good going till we hit our first Toll
gate at Srinagar Toll Plaza. Paid 35 Rs and were off again. It was smooth sailing, engine at full clip, the temp and fuel looking good not
other noises not rattles, life was good and then "thunk" and no response from the accelerator pedal. We coasted to a stop and pulled
aside right next to a mechanic shop.
    Time: 5:15 pm 23rd Jan
    Place: Somewhere on NH 2
    ODO : 7567
    Leg Distance: 112 Kms
    Average Speed: 37.33 Kmph
    Kilometers in Trip: 112
Popped open the bonnet and quick inspection revealed a broken accelerator cable at the carb end. As luck would have it we had
stopped at a mechanic shop and he had the spare cable. Fixed the cable and some play in the clutch pedal and a general inspection
later started again. Lost about 40 mins here. Started off and stopped only about 7 kms before Agra.
    Time: 7:15 pm 23rd Jan
    Place: 7 Kms from Agra
    ODO : 7647
    Leg Distance: 80 Kms
    Average Speed: 80 Kmph
    Kilometers in Trip: 192
Stopped at the "Tee ‘n’ Gee pure veg" restaurant for a meal of roti, dal, fried chicken and omlette! Food was good. Enquired about how
th eroad conditions were and were being persuaded to stay back at the hotel as the fog was really bad ahead and no other place to
stop blah blah. We thanked the hotel guard for his info and left anyway at 8 to Kanpur.
    Time: 2:00 am 24th Jan
    Place: Hotel President, Kanpur
    ODO : 7926
    Leg Distance: 279 Kms
    Average Speed: 55.8 Kmph
    Kilometers in Trip: 471
About a 100 kms before Kanpur we hit fog, and boy was it bad. Traffic simply stopped dead. No movement absolutely and that made
things worse because people who could or needed to move were stuck behind traffic. In zero visibility we manuevered to the head of
the pack of stopped vehicles. A WagonR driver, a local, asked if we were from the army and could help as they needed to reach Kanpur
soon. We decided to help by leading them. Switched my lights to low beam, switched on my GPS on the phone and my wipers and
started out. Using the line markers on the road and the general orientation of the road from the GPS, we crawled on the road the
Kanpur. We realised that we had become a pack leader for 60 odd vehicles including truckers. The NH2 is surprisingly well made. Most
villages are bypasses by building the road elevated and bordered off on both sides to reduce road incursions. On the flip side it means
that to stop for food or access the village one has to exit the NH and those exits are hard to see in the day at high speed forget at night
or in fog conditions and are not at all marked. We reached Kanpur at about 1:00 am and with much difficulty reached the city as the
inner roads had no markers. We had to rely on my GPS to see how the road turns and plan accordingly. Helped the driver to a place
where he could go on from and reached the hotel at 2 am.
Hotel President: filthy, dusty and cheap. Checked into room 315 for 500 Rs and after making the beds with our sheets ( dont want to
think about the ones they provided) hit the sack.Woke up early at 7 and after a quick review of the fog situation finally left Kanpur at
9:35 am. Decided against stopping anywhere to maximise the distance to be covered during daytime. Felt for the first time things a re
going wrong. Gut feeling that the trip was falling apart but pushed the though away and continued on. Got stuck in a jam at Chodgra
where a bridge under construction made life hell. Frustration building, cuss words flowing till we jumped the kerb and after some yogic
manuevering left the jam behind. Only a Gypsy for this.
    Time: 4:30 pm 25th Jan
Place: Outside Varanasi on NH 2
    ODO : 8243
    Leg Distance: 317 Kms
    Average Speed: 52.8 Kmph
    Kilometers in Trip: 788
After a break for lunch at a Reliance Khana Khazana, we were cruising along till I heard a loud whine from the engine bay, after a
moment of panic we slowed down and parked aside on the shoulder and popped the bonnet. A prlim inspection revealed a jammed
alternator. Again luck on our side( or is it?) we were about 100mtrs from a mechanic. Slow drive to mechanic and just before I can turn
the ignition off the fan belt gives way. The ‘mistry’ ( thats what mechanics are called here in UP) askes me if he should fix the old one
ore order a new one for 1000/- , he says its faster to put in a new one and we agree. A new one is brought in and th eprice is bumped up
to 1250/- finally at 5:50 pm we leave with a new alternator. We cross Varanasi on the bypass and after a toll bridge near Mughalsarai the
alternator light comes on and the vehicle starts stuttering, we just manage to enter Mughalsarai and catch the last mistry before he
shuts shop. The owner of the shop, a cussing but helpful sardar, tells us that the new alternator is shot and he has a refurbished Lucas
one for 2000/- and says the local ones are crap. He asks 2k and the old alternator for the refurbished one. After some discussion and
no budging from him we get it replaced but the battery is drained so he sets off to get another from a friend. Another mechanic joins the
party and finally things are fixed at 10:30 pm. We are asked to drop the mechanic at his place 12 kms enroute in our way. We think its a
good idea as we would have some one to help if things broke again. We set off in peak fog outside Varanasi and crawled to the
mechancs home and realised there is no way to go further due to the fog. Decided to turn back to varanasi. This proved to be a wise
    decision.
On the way back about 5 Kms from the town, the lights started dimming and the engine sputtered to a halt. The self made no noise at all
. Not a whirr at all. The fog was blinding and we were in the middle of the NH2. Pushed the car aside. The thick fog meant that there was
no traffic on the road and the occasional truck was not willing to stop. Cant blame them I guess. So we take out our mobiles to realise
Santoshs phone is dead and mine has low power. We were hoping to use the car charger to recharge but the battery was now dead. I
tried calling Ashit and just managed to give him our location and situation before I get a low battery warning on my mobile. I was in mid
sentence when the battery died. I stepped out to find it chilling cold ( it was 4 degrees outside) and decided walking was out of
question. We looked at each other.

To be continued. Pics coming up as well.

  • Dual Electronics’ iPod touch GPS cradle now shipping in late February

Well, it’s quite a ways off the November 2009 launch date the company initially promised, but Dual Electronics is now saying that its XGPS300 navigation cradle for the iPod touch will really, honestly be available sometime in “late February.” The price presumably remains at the same $179.99 as before, which also includes a bundled NavAtlas navigation app and, of course, an adjustable windshield mount. Not exactly the easiest sell, to be sure, especially considering how much the GPS market has changed in just those few short months.

  • “Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami” Season 2

Kourtney and Khloe are gearing up for another summer in South Beach: The sister are on the hunt for new “Dash Dolls” for the upcoming second season of E!’s Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami.

Although the network hasn’t officially renewed the show for a second season, a new Craigslist posting from Bunim/Murray Productions — the operation behind for The Real World and Project Runway, leaves little doubt that new mom Kourtney and her newlywed sister Khloe are Florida-bound

The ad calls for “a local Miami girl with a flair for fashion” and “outgoing, fun-loving, confident girls to help run their store.” As part of the reality show filming, the ad states “you shouldn’t be camera shy and you must feel comfortable having your life televised. “

All applicants must be 18 and over and residents of Miami.

How Kourtney and Khloe will swing this is anyone’s guess. Kourtney didn’t have a kid and Khloe didn’t have new hubby Lamar Odom when the L.A.-born socialites headed across the country to open a new Dash Boutique last summer.

  • Former Current TV strategist Sloan jumps to Twitter

Robin Sloan, a former strategist and executive at Current TV, is joining Twitter to handle media partnerships. He says he’ll help “producers, reporters, developers and strategists at media organizations that want to do cool, transformative things with tweets.”

He was recruited by a former colleague Chloe Sladden, who experimented with one of the earliest of uses of Twitter against a live broadcast. During the first presidential debate of the 2008 campaign, Sloan built an application that would overlay curated tweets over the bottom of the screen.

He didn’t give any specifics as to how he sees Twitter working with media organizations. Instead, he pointed to how quickly the company’s ecosystem has evolved.

    He wrote on his blog:

“I feel like I’m constantly learning and re-learning how to use Twitter. And I think that’s because, paired with this odd constraint, you’ve got this crazy openness—this refusal to specify exactly what you’re supposed to do with the service, or how, or even why. So those determinations fall to us, and as a result, the whole thing seems to be convulsing and transforming, like, every six months.”

Sloan was auspiciously also the author of Twitter’s five billionth tweet.

  • “Britain’s Got Talent” Reject Threatens Lawsuit Against Simon Cowell

King of Mean Simon Cowell is facing a legal tango with a husky-voiced former nurse who claims Cowell humiliated her during her audition on Britain’s Got Talent this month.

The American Idol judge was informed this week that a former contestant by the name of Emma Czikai has logged a complaint against him with Britain’s labor board, claiming the music mogul and acid-tongued critic violated the UK’s Disability Discrimination Act of 1995 when he called her a bad singer on national television. Emma’s even considering filing a lawsuit against Cowell, Britain’s Daily Mail claims.

Czikai was confident that she would get through the first round on the popular talent show. “I do have the ability to move people. People have cried when they have heard me sing,” she told BGT cameras just moments before she met Simon and fellow judges Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the self-professed “opera singer” butchered her rendition of Josh Groban’s “You Raised Me Up.”

Czikai suffers from cervical spone neuritis, which can affect hearing. The former medical professional believes that the show failed to take her illness into account before slamming her performance — although it isn’t known if any of the judges were made aware of it.

“This story is the truth behind the joke. They made one big joke out of me. They put it on the YouTube and sold it in 30 countries. The whole world is saying: ‘This stupid woman’s a laugh,’” Emma spat to The Mail this week.

A Britain’s Got Talent spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the matter and it’s currently being considered by our lawyers.”

This may come as a surprise to you (although probably not, you smart devil), but it turns out that plenty of people are dissatisfied with their current e-reader options — according to a recent study conducted at the University of Georgia. The study was conducted over a six-month period where participants read the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on a Kindle, then provided feedback. The results were, well — not entirely shocking. Younger adults found the Kindle to be lacking because it had no touchscreen or other applications (though to be fair, neither does the print version of the paper), while older adults seemed more satisfied, but also reported missing the crossword puzzles and comics of a real, live newspaper. Pretty much everyone agreed that the screen was nice and comfortable to read on, but almost no one was a fan of the price. All in all, there’s not terribly much here that we think is overly telling — besides (of course) the fact that paper rules.

  • Miley’s Little Sister Noah Cyrus Clothing Line “Ooh! La La! Couture”

Things that make you go “LOL…” Would you let your child take fashion advice from Noah Cyrus? The younger sister of teen starlet Miley Cyrus, Noah Cyrus, has teamed up with best pal and actress Emily Grace Reaves to launch a new collection of children’s clothing.

The Ooh! La La! Couture line will feature “versatile styles that can be worn with sweet ballerina slippers, funky sneakers or paired with lace stockings and boots for more of a rock and roll look.”

Like her big sister, controversy is no stranger to young Noah. Last October, parents Billy Ray and Tish were chided for allowing the 9-year-old to attend a red carpet charity event dressed like a bloodsucking prostitot. More recently, Noah has starred in a pair of questionable YouTube videos. One in which she slaps her ass to the rhythmic stylings of Akon’s “Smack That,” and another which stars the girl lip-synching to singer Kesha’s racy new single “Tik Tok.”

The song, which includes lines like, “I’m talking about everybody getting crunk, crunk/ Boys tryin’ to touch my junk, junk,” has been deemed a little inappropriate to be mimicked by a fourth grader.

Noah’s new line is set for debut this Valentine’s Day.

  • Israel drags confrontations beyond Palestine: Hamas

GAZA: Hamas officials as well as observers expected on Saturday that the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a senior Islamic Hamas movement commander in Dubai on Jan. 20, ” would sooner or later move the battle between Hamas and Israel outside the Palestinian territories.” They said the ambiguous assassination of al-Mabhouh might be “a new turn” in the military confrontation between Hamas and Israel, that could develop to mutual avenge attacks in some Arab and foreign countries. Hamas has directly accused the Israeli Mosad (foreign intelligence) of being behind his death. Observers close to Hamas said that the movement hasn”t yet expressed full commitment to a declared ceasefire with Israel after last winter’’s “Cast Lead” Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip, adding that al-Mabhouh’’s murder in Dubai “would oblige Hamas to respond to his killing.” Mustafa al-Sawaf, a Gaza-based political analyst, specialized in Hamas affairs expected that “Hamas response to the killing of al-Mabhouh, who has a high-ranking position in Hamas armed wing, would be equal to an assassination of a senior Israeli leader.” “Although Hamas response to the killing of al-Mabhouh would be linked to certain political and military considerations in the field, but I still believe that the movement would keep the demand of revenge in order to re-account itself among its supporters,” said al-Sawaf. He added that the assassination’’s circumstances and the place where it occurred “would be a justification to open a new field of confrontation and adopt a new strategy of attacking Israeli targets abroad, which will be contrary to its strategy that focuses on fighting Israel in the Palestinian territories.” Al-Sawaf explained that this shows Israel is able to infiltrate the security of the Arab countries by targeting Hamas leaders who live abroad. “Israel sends a message to Hamas that it can carry out more assassinations abroad against Hamas prisoners who will be released after the prisoners swap is finalized.” Hamas has deliberately calmed down the confrontation with Israel by stopping homemade rocket attacks from Gaza at southern Israel after the end of January 2009 Israeli war on Gaza, which has left more than 1,440 people killed and 5,000 wounded.

  • Yemen rebels agree to ceasefire offer

AReview: SANA: A rebel leader from northern Yemen says he is ready to agree to a cease-fire with the government. In an audio recording posted on Yemeni Web sites Saturday, Shi”ite leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said he would accept a series of conditions set out by the government late last year. The government offered the rebels a permanent cease-fire in September as long as they agreed to withdraw from the region, end attacks, and stop interfering in local government. Shi”ites from the Zaidi sect have been fighting government troops in northern Yemen since 2004, accusing the government of denying them civil, economic and religious rights. Also Saturday, Yemeni authorities arrested a suspected al-Qaida militant. Officials said he was preparing to carry out a suicide bombing in the eastern Hadramaut region. The interior ministry said Saleh Abd al-Habib Saleh al-Shaush was wearing an explosive belt when he was detained. His exact target is still unknown, but the ministry says it was to be a major economic facility. Yemen has recently attracted international focus after al-Qaida militants there claimed responsibility for a failed bombing attempt on a U.S.-bound passenger jet on Christmas Day (December 25). The incident led Yemeni authorities to increase operations against al-Qaida.

An official news agency quoted a military-diplomatic source as saying Libya was prepared to buy around 20 fighter planes and S-300PMU2 air defense systems. The agency said on Tuesday that Libya also may acquire T-90S tanks, and modernize more than 140 T-72 tanks and other weapons. The deal was signed after talks with Libyan defense minister, Major General Abu-Bakr Yunis Jabr, earlier this week in Moscow.

Here we go. The primary election is February 2, 2010. The unfortunate Roland Burris’s US Senate seat is up for grabs… appointed by the disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich. Burris was unable to garner support for a re-election bid and so announced his retirement.

Illinois Conservative patriot groups are backing solid Conservative Don Lowery (R), a retired circuit court judge, former County State’s Attorney and a VietNam veteran (R), and Andrew Andrzejewski, a Conservative businessman and political outsider running against the entrenched Illinois corrupt political machine. Both of these candidates are running uphill battles against well-funded political machines. Whatever you can do to to help them between now and the 2nd of February please do. Go online and plug into their websites.

Judge Don LoweryIf we can pull off another upset in Illinois it will send another unmistakable message to the Democrats who are STILL working behind closed doors to sneak a health care bill past us.

Andrew AndrzejewskiPresident Obama was invited to speak in front of the Republican Party Conference and went on an 82 minute diatribe, interspersed with some sharp questioning and pointed statements from Republican legislators. Sure, it’s about ten months away, but there’s not time like the present to do some idle speculaton. Especially in light of recent polls, such as Obama’s falling ratings, the Republican advantage on the generic ballot, the (hopeful) death of Obamacare, increasing debt and, of course, the election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts.
