  • Windows Mobile 7 UI concept

winmonew11By now we have all been bored with the old, rather pedestrian screen shots of Windows Mobile 7. We often see more interesting UI’s in Microsoft’s concept videos, such as this Microsoft Tag video which we have posted on earlier.

Do you think Microsoft will surprise us with a good-looking and radically different UI such as this, or will we just be seeing Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Plus? Let us know what your wildest fantasies for Windows Mobile 7 is below.

Thanks Wreiad for reminding us of the video above.

  • Padma Lakshmi Reveals That Adam Dell is Father of Her Baby

padma 300x216 Padma Lakshmi Reveals That Adam Dell is Father of Her Baby Well it looks like the second most exciting thing to happen this week in the world of technology is that Padma Lakshmi has revealed that Adam Dell – Michael Dell’s younger brother, is the father of her baby. For months she wouldn’t reveal who the baby daddy was and now we learned that not only will it be a possibly gorgeous model/foodie baby, but maybe a techie baby as well. Those are some genes!!! The younger Dell is on the board of directors of XO Communications, OpenTable and BagBorrowOrSteal.com and is also a venture capitalist as well as a professor at Columbia Business School. No word yet if his big brother is planning a new line of Padma influenced notebooks…

  • Newsday Exec: We Didn’t Put Up A Paywall To Get People To Pay

With lots of people finding it rather amusing that a grand total of 35 people have subscribed to Newsday’s paywall, a Newsday exec has responded by saying the purpose of the paywall was never about getting people to pay in the first place. It’s all about reducing churn from cable subscribers. While the exec claims that those mocking the low number of subscribers ignored this, that’s not at all true. In fact, at least in our case, the very title of our post about Newsday’s paywall was all about how it was designed to reduce churn for Cablevision subscribers. The bigger point that people were making wasn’t specifically about Newsday, but to alert all of those other folks who seem to think that people will jump up and pay for online access to their local newspaper. As Newsday is discovering, that’s not the case.

Furthermore, if the goal was just to reduce churn, with no interest in getting outside subscribers, why offer a subscription plan at all? Why not just limit access to those who subscribe to Cablevision? Claiming no interest in signing up outside subscribers is shown to be a lie in the fact that they set up a system specifically to do just that.

  • Toyota CEO: I am deeply sorry for causing our customers so much worry

In his first public comment on the massive recall surrounding Toyota, President and CEO Akio Toyoda apologized to his customers for causing them so much worry.

“I am deeply sorry,” said Toyoda in a brief interview with the Japanese network NHK. Toyoda was seen leaving the interview in a black Audi.

“Truly we think of our customers as a priority and we guarantee their safety,” Toyoda said. He said that he could not answer questions about the recall because the company “was still investigating” the issue.

According to Toyota’s supplier CTS, the companies are awaiting a federal government approval of a redesigned accelerator pedal that is currently being developed.

The recall is now estimated to involve at least nine million cars and trucks.

Here are some highlights on the new surrounding Toyota’s Pedal Recall:

  • Etta James Alzheimer’s Disease

The son of soul songstress Etta James claims the 72-year-old R&B legend has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and is hospitalized in Southern California with an
    infection, CNN said Friday.

Donto James says his famous mother has been at Riverside Community Hospital for about a week and is recovering from sepsis caused by a urinary tract infection.

Etta, who previously battled an addiction to heroin, entered a treatment program last month for a dependency on painkillers and over-the-counter medicine. She was transferred to another facility and then the hospital when her physical condition worsened.

Her dementia caused Etta to make controversial comments about singer Beyonce — who played the singer in the 2008 film Cadillac Records — during a concert last year. Etta made headlines when she suggested the pop star should be “whipped” for singing “At Last” for President Obama’s inaugural ball.

James is best remembered for her rendition of “At Last.”

  • The Bears Showed The Markets Who’s Boss This Week As Stocks Continue To Fall

What a volatile day (and week!).

First, the Dow goes soaring up over 100 points, only to flop at 10:30 AM and continue to sink until losing 54 points to close at 10,067.

Again, I’ll repeat: are we about to see a 9000 point Dow?

The NASDAQ tumbled 1.4% to close at 2148 and the S&P 500 lost 10 points to finish at 1074.

And the selling didn’t stop there. Tech truly got slammed today, with Apple (AAPL), Rambus (RMBS), and SanDisk (SNDK) all taking major haircuts. Goldman Sachs (GS) continues its free fall, losing 2.5% today alone.

The Swiss Franc began to collapse earlier in the day but has since recovered slightly. A brief scare for many.

And just when you though commodities were safe, you looked at your chart and cringed. Oil is around $73 a barrel, down 1.2%. Gold is down $2.30 to $1082. Silver is floating around the break even point but is down two cent currently.

The days of the 2009 rally are clearly long gone.

Joining Toyota in its recall woes, Honda has recalled 646,000 units of its Fit, Jazz and City models globally over a faulty window switch after a child died when fire broke out in a car last year. The recall consists of 140,000 units in the United States and covers other areas including South America, Europe, South Africa and Asia, but not Japan.

Honda said that the recall will fix a defective master switch, which could cause water to enter the power window switch and cause a fire.

A Honda spokeswoman said that there were three reported cases of fires due to the defect, two in the United States and one in South Africa.

  • Consumer Reports yanks Recommended status on recalled Toyotas

This could help quell some criticism against Consumer Reports being biased in favor of Toyota when handing out its valuable “Recommended” status to vehicles. The popular consumer products review magazine announced today that it has temporarily suspended Recommended status for all eight vehicles involved in Toyota’s accelerator pedal recall. Just to refresh, the vehicles involved include the Avalon, Camry (except the Hybrid and some other models), Corolla, Highlander (again, except the Hybrid model), Matrix (and by extension the Pontiac Vibe), RAV4, Tundra and Sequoia. Here’s what Jim Guest, President of Consumers Union, the publisher of CR had to say:

“Although incidents of sudden acceleration are rare, we are taking this action because the vehicles have been identified as potentially unsafe without a fix yet being available to consumers, and in general our position is that you shouldn’t compromise on safety.”

The status suspension, however, is temporary and CR expects to reinstate their recommendation of these vehicles once the problem is fixed, though with so many questions still unanswered, we wouldn’t expect that to be any time soon. The consumer pub also notes that instances of unintended acceleration are not exclusive to Toyota vehicles, and recommends their handy guide called “How to stop a runaway car” in case it happens to you. Of course, they also reported in December that 40% of sudden acceleration claims involve Toyota models.

  • Whitney Tilson: US Economic Growth Will Be Feeble For Years

    whitney tilson

Whitney Tilson predicts anemic economic growth for the next few years.

His views are much like Nouriel Roubini’s.

They both agree that the market’s signs of stabilization were not grounded in the fundamentals of economic growth – unemployment is still high, housing prices are still collapsed, and there is still a need to de-lever after decades of excessive consumption and declining savings.

So in his latest letter to investors, Tilson predicts the market rally is essentially over. Once government stimulus and subsidies disappear, he says, the market will be much less robust: 1% annual growth for the next 3-5 years.

Normal economic growth is 2-3% annually.

“The US economy will face a significant headwind for a number of years as losses stemming from the greatest asset bubble in history continue to be realized,” he says.

“We’re not assuming anything other than feeble economic growth in the US for many years.”

In his latest investor letter, Tilson explains how his views affect T2’s investment strategy:

“Our view today of where we are in the cycle is at odds with the market consensus, which is increasingly pricing in a robust economic recovery. In light of this, since March we have steadily gone from playing offense to playing defense, which means we’ve been trimming our long positions, increasing our short book, and becoming more defensive in terms of the nature of the stocks we own.”

He reminds those with a more optimistic market outlook:

“If stocks were as cheap as they were in March, we wouldn’t let our macro concerns deter us from buying aggressively, but they’re not, as the markets have delivered nearly five years of average stock market returns in only 10 months!”

  • KKBOX: A Freemium Music Model That’s Actually Profitable

While the music industry watches Spotify’s endeavor to make money on streaming music via the freemium model in Europe, one company has figured out how to turn a profit by converting free listeners to paying subscribers in Asia. Taipei-based KKBOX, which currently provides a catalog of songs from all four major labels plus Chinese-language music, has signed up 200,000 paying users in Taiwan and Hong Kong for its desktop and mobile streaming music service — and is now setting its sights on the U.S.

To be clear, KKBOX won’t compete directly with Spotify in the American market (whenever Spotify manages to reach the U.S.). According to co-founder and Stanford grad Chris Lin, the service currently sports a fairly limited catalog of Western music, with the majority of user searches in Asia targeting songs published by Chinese independent labels. In the U.S., though, KKBOX will aim for the niche market of overseas Chinese by offering primarily Chinese-language songs, with no Western songs at all. KKBOX is also planning launches in Malaysia and Singapore, while managing global licensing from the local offices of international record labels in Taiwan.

Although 30 percent of Taiwanese Internet users have signed up for KKBOX, the company still has a fairly low conversion rate of free to paid users. Among its 6 million members, who have access to an online magazine and community-driven site, only 200,000 — about 3.3 percent — are paying for full-song streams rather than free preview clips. (By comparison, Spotify reportedly has 250,000 paying customers among 7 million users– about 3.6 percent — who get full songs for free.)

However, as part of its November 2009 launch in Hong Kong, KKBOX struck a deal with mobile access provider Hutchison Telecom that offers bundled streaming music services to iPhone buyers, and Lin said half of those new customers are becoming paying subscribers. And by paying relatively low royalty rates in Asian markets, compared with what it costs to stream songs in the U.S. and most of Europe, KKBOX has managed to reach profitability by charging consumers about $4.50 to $5 each month–significantly less than most Western music subscription services that include mobile components.

KKBOX is aiming to cross the Pacific by the third quarter of 2010, with an eye on the 4 million overseas Chinese in the U.S. Lin said the company will charge no more than $10 per month to U.S. users, with both the desktop and mobile services included. Eventually, by 2011, KKBOX plans to launch in the especially piracy-plagued mainland Chinese market — an area Spotify is also pursuing.

Since it doesn’t offer ad-supported free streams, KKBOX’s freemium model isn’t just like Spotify’s. It’s more like traditional music subscription services such as RealNetworks’ Rhapsody in the U.S. And with lower royalty rates in Asian markets, its path to profitability is much easier than in Europe or the U.S., where just about everyone  else has struggled.

But KKBOX has also succeeded in landing mobile customers through a creative carrier deal, which it hopes to repeat in other geographies. If Spotify does attempt to enter China, where analysts have suggested that premium music services are a tough sell, KKBOX is doing well enough in the greater Chinese music market that it may have the upper hand on it, if and when the two companies reach the world’s largest country.

  • EA to re-launch FIFA Online in the West, bumps up the engine to FIFA 10’s

So EA is bringing FIFA Online to Western countries. It’s been available in Asia for a couple years now, and players from other parts of the world will get to join in on the fun. Oh, the game: it’s a free, online version of FIFA that you play on your PC.

The game, currently based on the FIFA 07 engine, but will be bumped up to FIFA 10, goes into open beta in June, just in time for the World Cup in South Africa, which Spain will win.

It’s kinda like an entry-level version of EA’s popular football game. So entry-level, in fact, that there’s a mouse-control scheme that eliminates the need for a proper controller. (I can’t even imagine playing the game with a keyboard.)

I’m a Pro Evolution Soccer man myself, so excuse my lack of enthusiasm. And even then, you can only play so many matches in a row before you’re like, “Eh, sandwich time.”

  • Steve Jobs Says Publishers Not Happy with Amazon

The iPad won’t make its market debut until March, but Apple CEO Steve Jobs is already jockeying for e-reader leadership. Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that publishers are withholding their e-books from Amazon.com — because they aren’t happy with the digital book-selling giant.

Apple’s iPad is preparing to move into the territory dominated by Amazon.com and its Kindle e-reader. Apple launched the iBooks app for the iPad along with the iBookstore, which Apple is billing as the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. Apple hasn’t listed its e-book prices yet, but Jobs is priming the pump for a battle.

“Steve Jobs is right. The publishers aren’t happy with Amazon,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group. “Amazon did give some concessions to publishers shortly before the iPad launched, but the Kindle has not been a publisher favorite. Newspapers and magazines aren’t happy with the device, either, because it doesn’t offer the text in columns with embedded advertising.”

    Amazon’s Danger

Analyst predictions for iPad sales range from four million to 10 million in the first year. Enderle’s projections range from four million to six million, depending on the competitive response. Amazon isn’t likely to roll over and let Apple take over the e-book publishing world like it did the digital music world. But Amazon may have to make adjustments to compete with the iPad and the third generation of e-readers from competitors.

“Amazon and Kindle are going to have to dramatically up their game if they are going to hold. The Kindle is supposed to go through a refresh at the end of the year,” Enderle said. “It’s supposed to get a better display in the five-inch product than the iPad has, which would, if true, address the rendering problems.”

Amazon can make changes to its licensing and…

  • VoIP Providers Unleash 3G Connections for iPhone, iPad

VoIP providers fring and iCall announced this week that their apps for the iPhone 3G are ready to run in 3G mode on AT&T’s network. Moreover, Skype recently indicated that it will soon offer a 3G-capable version of its software for Apple’s iPhone 3G.

Previously, all three iPhone apps were restricted to Wi-Fi only. In response to the Federal Communications Commission’s investigation into Apple’s reluctance to approve Google Voice for the iPhone, however, AT&T announced last October that it would open its 3G network to third-party Internet voice applications on Apple’s iPhone.

This week Apple amended its developer agreements to enable VoIP apps for the iPhone 3G on the Apps Store. “I commend Apple’s decision to open its platform to 3G calling — an action that will create new opportunities for entrepreneurs and provide more choices for consumers,” said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski on Friday.

    Technology Limitations

Existing users of iCall’s app don’t need an upgrade to start placing or receiving voice calls over AT&T’s 3G network, wrote iCall CEO Arlo Gilbert in a blog. “The 3G block was a server-side block on our end, and it has now been removed,” Gilbert wrote. “The only caveat here is that AT&T’s 3G network is overloaded big time and call quality will depend upon the 3G signal you are able to get.”

Still, having VoIP capabilities on the iPhone doesn’t necessarily mean users will be swift to change their calling habits en masse. Among other things, the peer-to-peer calling technology that Skype and other developers currently use is less reliable than the voice capabilities that 3G smartphones deliver directly, noted Lisa Pierce, an independent wireless analyst at the Strategic Networks Group.

In theory, VoIP over 3G “could be quite cannibalistic,” but the combination currently features “a lot of latency — more than the magic cap…

  • Review: Bankshot delivers a quick hit of fun

The other week I said a lot of good things about Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, but one of the great things about games on the iPhone is that they don’t all have to be epic masterpieces. Such is the case with the free Bankshot [iTunes link], which is a simple and fun one-hit game that was created in just 36 hours: the only goal is to bounce a little neon “puck” into a target that gets placed on different sides of the screen. It’s fun, it’s easy, and it’s the perfect kind of game to just pull up and play when you only need a few minutes of distraction.

The game does have a little bit of hidden depth (you can score more points by bouncing the puck off the walls more times before it hits the target, but if you go more than four bounces, the game is over), but essentially, this is an addictive little pick-up-and-play game (and it’s even OpenFeint enabled, if you’re into that sort of thing). The game is free with ads, but they were never distracting or in the way. If you want a quick arcade hit to play during your next few iPhone breaks, definitely pick it up.

  • Weave Goes 1.0: Firefox Gets an Official Bookmark Syncing Tool

weave_logo_jan09.jpgMozilla just announced that Weave, its official synchronization tool for Firefox, has just hit version 1.0 and is now generally available. Weave is a free browser addon that can seamlessly sync bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history and open browser tabs between different computers that run Firefox. Weave also runs on Mozilla’s mobile browser for the Nokia N900.

    Sponsor

Mozilla announced the Weave project in late 2007. Weave is compatible with Firefox 3.5 and up.

    Getting Started

weave_small.jpgTo use Weave, you have to register for an account with Mozilla. The plugin will automatically prompt you to create this account after the installation. Advanced users who are worried about their privacy can also use their own servers as a repository for their data. It’s worth noting that all of the data you transfer to Mozilla’s servers is encrypted.

    Weave vs. XMarks

Of course, Weave isn’t the only solution for syncing bookmarks and XMarks is currently the most popular bookmark syncing tool. Unlike Weave, XMarks isn’t just compatible with Mozilla’s browsers but also supports Safari, Chrome and Internet Explorer. XMarks can sync bookmarks between these browsers.

It’s important to note, however, that Weave syncs a lot more than just bookmarks, however. Weave also syncs passwords and your browsing history, for example. In future versions, Mozilla also plans to allow users to sync addons and other browser customizations.

  • Startup Finance: 4 Online Invoicing Resources

With the end of the month rolling over this weekend it is the time when some begin preparing their monthly invoices to bill clients. Theses days there is no shortage of online tools to help with financing and invoices, so we thought we would take the opportunity to point out a few tools to help you get your weekend work done quickly and efficiently. With a plethora of services comes an equally cumbersome amount of features and options, from invoice limits, to pricing and to iPhone apps. Hopefully with this quick overview of four great services you’ll be able to better choose the right one for you.

    Sponsor

    FreshBooks

By far the online invoicing application with the widest set of features is FreshBooks. Users can create and manage invoices, track time and expenses, brand their documents, and get paid from clients through any of a number of online payment systems. FreshBooks also offers integration with Basecamp, an API for developers looking to integrate the software into a business’ current setup, and an official iPhone application. Half a dozen payment options are available, ranging from a free account with limited number of users and clients, to the highest paid account of $149 per month for 5000 clients and 20 users.

    Blinksale

Another great service is Blinksale, which offers an unlimited number of clients, but limits the number of invoices through its various payment plans. Like FreshBooks, users can import clients from Basecamp, but the only online payment option for Blinksale is through PayPal. A few downsides to Blinksale include the lack of a basic free account (they offer a free 30 day trial), and not having an official iPhone app, though a 3rd party developer has produced an application using their API. Blinksale has three pricing plans for $6, $12 and $24 per month.

    Ballpark

Ballpark takes a different spin on invoicing by adding the missing link of communication between payers and payees, as well as a bidding and estimate service. With a birds-eye dashboard of your activities, users can tell when their clients view their invoices, and Ballpark’s commenting system makes it easy to clear up any disagreements. The service also compliments its slick user interface with an equally attractive iPhone app and desktop notifier for Mac. Users can get a free account limited to 1 invoice and 3 estimates per month, or they can pony up anywhere between $6 and $99 for more users and invoices.

    Billing Boss

Billing Boss is a completely free online invoicing solution for you bootstrappers, but this comes at the expense of being limited to basic features. The site does make up for this with its own iPhone and Google G1 applications and the ability to use PayPal. Users can also import their merchant accounts used on Beanstream, a payment services platform run by Sage, which also provides Billing Boss.

There are dozens of online services that provide help with invoicing, including but certainly not limited to: PayPal, Zoho, Simply Bill, Invotrak, CurdBee and Invoicera. There is sure to be a solution out there to fit any business’ needs.

If you know of some other great services you’d like to share, let us know in the comments.
