  • Ron Paul to Congress: Stop The Wars, Stop The Spending

    Location: House Floor
    Date: 1/27/2010

    Transcript:

Ron Paul: I thank you, Madam Speaker. Today we pass the supplemental bill and I’m deeply disappointed about that. I was disappointed also that I wasn’t able to get any time to enter into the debate because the time was rather limited and it was a closed rule. But I did want to make a couple of comments and the concerns that I’ve had about this supplemental.

You know, when the president sent the supplemental over, it was 84.9 billion dollars, and there were some of us that were hoping that we wouldn’t be funding the wars through supplemental, but it looks like that hasn’t changed; that process would continue even though there were some that believe there would be a change in the way we funded these wars.

When that bill came to the House, there was a lot of expression of concern about spending too much money, but by the time it got to the floor, it was 96.7 billion dollars. And things were added, for instance 2 billion dollars for the flu epidemic that didn’t occur. But they still went and spent 2 billion dollars trying to figure out whether or not we’re ever going to have an epidemic.

But it was very disappointing that even though it was a closed rule, the minority had one chance to do something about it and maybe reduce some of the spending. But lo and behold, when that amendment was offered, it was offered to increase the spending by 2.9 billion dollars. But there was a lot of expression of the outcry about this spending and the deficits we have, and the deficits exploding and the Social Security, medicare, medicade are underfunded. We were in the midst of a crisis that doesn’t seem to bother anybody about spending.

But the truth is, the treasury is bare. The treasury is empty and yet we continue to spend all this money. So where do they think they’re going to get this money? Well, we can’t tax the people anymore; the people are broke. And yet still we resort to more borrowing and more printing of money, which will not last forever; it will eventually come to an end and I think that is what we’re witnessing.

But this process bothers me a whole lot that we come to the floor with these supplementals, we rush them through, we talk about this excessive spending, and lo and behold, when we finally vote, we get a total of 60 people who would say, “You know, enough is enough”.

And besides, what are we doing? Where are we spending this money? I thought we were supposed to, with this change in administration, that we would be fighting less wars. But no, the war in Iraq continues, we expand the war in Afghanistan, we spread the war into Pakistan, and we always have on the table the potential danger of Iran.

So when will it ever end? We can’t even define the enemy. Who exactly is the enemy over there? Is it the Al-Qaida, the Taliban, is it the government of Pakistan? If you can’t define the enemy, how do you know when the war is over? If you’re in war, which we are, how can this be anything other than war, when was this war declared?

“Oh, we got this authority 5 or 10 years ago, who knows when”; perpetual war. This is what we’re involved in. perpetual spending. And then we say, “Well, we have to do that to be safe”. That is what is preposterous. It’s the very policy that makes us unsafe. We pursue this policy and the more we do, the less safe we are. It’s a big argument now about whether we’re safer now with the new administration or is it making us less safe?

The truth is, the policies of the last 10, 15, 20 years have made us less safe. And as long as we occupy countries, as long as we kill other people and civilians are being killed, we are going to build enemies. And as long we’re known throughout the world that we torture people, we will incite people to hate us and want to come here to kill us.

So we aren’t more safe. We’re less safe by this foreign policy. And some day we have to wise up, change our ways and not be the policeman of the world, not to pretend that we can be the nation-builder of the world. Square off and make sure we don’t torture because you don’t get worthwhile information from torture; all it does is incite people against us. And the occupations can never be of any benefit to us.

But what about the financial calamity that is coming? I’m afraid this is the way this will end; through another financial crisis much bigger than the one we currently have. Because you can’t create 2 trillion dollars of new money every year and expect this system to continue.

The Soviet system collapsed because they couldn’t afford it, their economic system was a total failure. We did not have to fight the Soviets. Even though they were a nuclear power, they collapsed and disintegrated. And that is what we have to be concerned about, because we cannot continue to finance this system and pursue a policy which endangers us.

So if we care about the American people and we care about our liberties and care about our Constitution, we ought to look seriously at our foreign policy and not continue to pursue these supplemental appropriations where we continue to spend money that we don’t have.

  • No Vicriviroc — Yet

ccr5lrgApparently, Merck — taking over for Schering-Plough — will not seek approval for vicriviroc in treatment-experienced patients:

In two Phase III studies in this patient population, vicriviroc did not meet the primary efficacy endpoint. These studies enrolled a high percentage of patients who had three or more active drugs in their optimized background therapy regimen.

The report goes on to say that the results of these studies will be presented at CROI next month, and that other studies of vicriviroc in treatment-naive patients will continue.

Even though we don’t know the details yet, it’s understandable how this trial didn’t show any benefit for vicriviroc.  With the “optimized background therapy” having 3 or more active drugs, how could it?  We’re a long way from the TORO/T-20 days, when such “OBT” led to virologic suppression in < 10% of patients.

The control arms in these studies now just do too well.  Progress!

Still, given the checkered history of this particular CCR5 antagonist — including a failed phase II study in treatment-naive patients and a possible signal of increased malignancies in another trial — the FDA approval for any indication might be a long hill to climb.

  • 2010 Geneva Preview: Carlsson C25 Super-GT looks crazier than the SLS AMG

The next major auto show will take place in Geneva later this March. For the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, tuner Carlsson will unveil its first own-developed supercar known as the Carlsson C25 Super-GT.

Besides the extra souped up looks based on the SL AMG, the Carlsson C25 is powered by 6 liter V12 Bi-Turbo engine making 753-hp with a maximum torque of 974 lb-ft. That allows the Carlsson C25 Super-GT to go from 0-62 mph in blistering fast 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 218 mph.

To assure exclusivity of the vehicle, Carlsson will only offer one C25 Super-GT per country. Carlsson did not say how many units it will be producing. The car can be services at any Mercedes-Benz dealers since it is based on the latest Mercedes-Benz technology.

Hit the jump for the press release for more details.

    Press Release:

World Premiere at the Geneva Motor Show: Carlsson C25

    – Limited Super-GT of the small series manufacturer Carlsson
    – Edition includes only 25 cars and therefore ensures maximum exclusiveness
    – Carlsson combines top performance with drivability
    – Carlsson develops entirely own design vocabulary

Carlsson who are approved as an automobile manufacturer by the Federal German Motor Transport Authority, for the first time presents an own developed automobile at this year’s Geneva Motor Show – the Carlsson C25. The concept of this Super-GT is based on the vision of combining maximum driving performance with an entirely new design and high exclusiveness. The result is a breathtaking and beautiful sports coupé with 753 hp in a limited edition of only 25 cars world-wide. Thereby, each automobile will be as individual as its future owner. “We exclusively make the cars to order and the delivery quantity for 2010 is already sold out”, says CEO, Dipl. Ing. (FH) Markus Schuster.

With 753 hp and 1150 Newton metres in 3.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h

The performance data of the six litre V12 Bi-Turbo is impressive. The high-performance aggregate with a motor management optimisation patented by Carlsson renders 753 hp (554 kW) and allows fast acceleration as well as smooth travels at lower speeds. Also responsible for the perfect performance evolvement is the elaborately developed stainless steel exhaust system with ends in four edgy pipes at the back. The power catapults the C25 with a torque of 1320 Newton metres at 3750 r.p.m. which is electronically limited to 1,150 Newton metres from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.7 seconds and achieves a maximum speed of 352 km/h.

Perfect combination between top performance and maximum driveability

When developing the Carlsson C25, the engineers from Gut Wiesenhof have achieved creating a Super-GT for smooth everyday use despite its very high performance. “There are more than enough super sports car in this world which can only be safely driven on a race track”, says Markus Schuster. “Therefore, we deliberately wanted to develop a car which is highly exclusive on the one hand and can be used for the daily journey to office on the other hand. Therefore, a Super-GT which can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.7 seconds and still offers a very pleasant driving comfort. All security-relevant regulations such as pedestrian protection, crash behaviour, ESP, ABS, Airbag systems are identical to large series editions with most modern standards.”

This is also achieved by the intelligent lowering system C-Tronic® SUSPENSION® which automatically recognises the road characteristics and driving manners and constantly adjusts the suspension setting accordingly. This does not only result in a pleasant journey on long routes, but also guarantees that the nodding and rolling motions of the C25 are reduced to a minimum while driving fast curves. Therefore, the car reaches the perfect road holding characteristics in every situation and renders the feeling of absolute controllability.

Different than other automobiles from small series, the Carlsson C25 has not been solely made for its use at the racetrack. Nevertheless, the C25 achieves top results in acceleration and handling. Compared to the racing machines with MOT approval, the Carlsson C25 offers its driver smooth journeys on Alpine passes and also on city roads or not perfectly even surfaces.

Maximum exclusiveness is ensured by only one automobile per country

In addition to the extensive refinement, the Carlsson C25 offers the advantage that every Mercedes-Benz dealer can maintain the car. As the automobile is based on the latest Mercedes-Benz technology, it is not necessary to drive to a garage, which is specialised in the Carlsson C25. This gives the Carlsson C25 additional suitability for everyday use. Moreover, Carlsson will only deliver one automobile per country and therefore ensures absolute exclusiveness for its customers.

Carlsson creates a perfect symbiosis of design and function

The C25 emphasises this exquisite status with its self-reliant and unique design. The elongated vehicle front with the tapered lobe between the powerful shoulders craves ahead and the generously dimensioned air inlets in the typical Carlsson trapezoid form supply the engine with the necessary ventilation. The ultra-light and forged wheels 1/10 UL in the dimensions 9,5×20 and 12×20 inches have been especially designed for the C25 and are equipped with high performance tyres measuring 265/30 at the front and 325/25 at the rear live axle.

One wheel just weighs 11.2 kilograms and therefore is 40 percent lighter than custom light alloy wheels. Ventilation ducts in front and behind the wheel houses provide the Carlsson brake system with 405 millimetres large slotted race brake discs at the front and 380 millimetre race brake discs at the rear axle with cool air. With this, Carlsson achieves the perfect symbiosis between design and function. The elongated flat rear screen and the restrained tearing edge on the boot lit as well as the generously dimensioned double diffuser render the required downthrust and therefore the C25 does not need any extensible spoilers. In order to emphasise the uniqueness of the C25, Carlsson has also developed a new rear- and front lights design.

Carlsson interior optimised for the driver

The newly designed interior resembles the exterior as far as shape, colour and functionality are concerned. The characteristic trapezoid elements at the front and back are also found on the steering wheel. On the seats and the centre console the edged shape is used as well. The instruments clearly turn towards the driver, indicate the performance capability of the C25 and increase the ergonomics.
The generous use of real carbon, tanned buffalo leather and ultra-suede in special colours provides an evenly exclusive and user-friendly ambience. For driveability reasons, Carlsson deliberately refrains from race seats, race straps, rollover devices and extreme lowering.

With the C25, Carlsson confirms its reputation as being one of the most exclusive automobile manufacturers in the world. High technical competence, many years experience in automobile construction, an advanced sense for design and elegance and German art of engineering make the Carlsson C25 unique all over the world.

  • Temperature and CO2 feedback loop ‘weaker than thought’ by Roger Harrabin, BBC environment analyst

The most alarming forecasts of natural systems amplifying the human-induced greenhouse effect may be too high, according to a new report.

The study in Nature confirms that as the planet warms, oceans and forests will absorb proportionally less CO2. It says this will increase the effects of man-made warming – but much less than recent research has suggested.

The authors warn, though, that their research will not reduce projections of future temperature rises. Further, they say their concern about man-made climate change remains high.

The research, from a team of scientists in Switzerland and Germany, attempts to settle one of the great debates in climate science about exactly how the Earth’s natural carbon cycle will exacerbate any man-made warming.

  • Navy Training at L.A. Hospital

It’s been a well kept secret but for the past seven years, the Navy has been training it’s doctors, nurses and corpsman (the equivalent of paramedics) at Los Angeles County USC hospital.

The hospital is located in Downtown Los Angeles, and sees gun shot wounds, stabbings and other traumatic injuries on a daily basis in the emergency room… the kinds of trauma and duress our troops could face on the battlefield.    That’s why the navy chose USC as a perfect location to put its medical team through a specialized combat training course, so they could be ready for  life in the war zone.

Fox News is the first TV news organization allowed to document the training which includes battlefield simulations, examinations of cadavers, rounds with doctors, exposure to the burn unit and real time in the emergency room, where physicians are saving lives minute to minute.   Navy Anesthetist Paul Scott said treating a stabbing victim in the ER is exactly the kind of injury he might treat in Iraq and Afghanistan.   Other Navy participants told us they can’t get this kind of experience anywhere else outside a war zone and were grateful that the Navy made this kind of combat program a priority.

One essential stop is the burn unit where the medics learned the specialized process necessary to treat burns, one of the most common injuries in combat.  Doctors tell us the sight of a burn takes some getting used to, but the doctors on the ground have to look past it if they are going to treat other injuries troops might have.

Fortunately USC has one of the  best burn units in the country and the members of the military get hands on, real life experience caring for patients.  Dr. Warren Garner, Director of the Burn Unit says he’s received texts and emails from troops in the field overseas thanking him and the hospital for preparing them well.

In return for the use of the  USC facilities, the County Hospital gets a helping hand in the ER from the Navy medics, which is a big help to the trauma staff when things get going in there.  After graduating from the three week program, the sailors know they could be deployed anytime over the next year.  Most will head to Afghanistan or the middle east, and most tell us they will leave on their journey with a new sense of confidence for whatever their mission might hold on the battlefield.

G-Power Typhoon “Black Pearl” BMW X5 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Remember when SUVs were actually designed to go off road? Nah, we don’t either. Who are we kidding? That was long before BMW got into the game, and where there’s a Bimmer, there’s a tuner. G-Power is relatively new to the game that the likes of Dinan, AC Schnitzer, et al have been playing for decades, but the tuning house is wasting no time making up lost ground. It’s already taken on the M5, M6 and Z4, to name just a few. And though these performance freaks have already taken a stab at the X5, they’ve come back around for another try.

Called the Typhoon Black Pearl, G-Power’s latest employs a SK III RS supercharger – along with new intake, exhaust, pistons, injectors and ECU – bolted to the 4.8-liter V8 to bring output up to 625 horsepower. That’s good for a run to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds and a top end in excess of 300 km/h (186 mph). Which strikes us as faster than a sport-ute should go, but G-Power hasn’t stopped there.

To compliment the bonkers performance, G-Power has fitted a new aero kit (complete with new front fascia, hood, wider fenders, diffuser, spoiler and side skirts) and 23-inch alloys. The price tag? A whopping €295,000 (~$415k). Details in the press release after the jump, photos in the gallery below.

  • GM moving forward with Cadillac ATS, concept could debut in LA this year

As much as we enjoyed seeing the new Cadillac XTS Concept (which hints at a future flagship sedan for the brand) at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, we would have much rather liked to see a concept for the upcoming compact ATS model that was rumored during the summer of 2009.

Either way, sources say that GM is moving forward with the Cadillac ATS and that the model should be well on its way for a 2012 debut. Key competitors for the ATS sedan will be the BMW 3-Series, Infiniti G37, Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

“We’re finalizing the four-door showcar of the ATS first,” an inside said. “Then we’ll follow quickly after with a wagon, a coupe and a convertible.”

The source said that there is currently a debate going on whether or not the convertible version will feature a folding hardtop or a ragtop.

  • Jammie Thomas Rejects Offer From RIAA To Settle For $25k Plus Request For Judge To Vacate Last Week’s Decision

After the judge in the Jammie Thomas-Rasset case decided to reduce the amount awarded to the record labels by the jury, we had hoped that both sides would figure out a way to just end this lawsuit. However, it looks like that’s not happening. As we noted, the RIAA was extremely reluctant to accept the new, greatly reduced, award, not because of the amount, but because they’re afraid to set precedent that a judge can lower the award in chosen by a jury using statutory damages in a copyright case. So, instead, the RIAA tried to offer Jammie a deal: pay $25,000 (donated to a musician’s charity) and ask the judge to vacate the reduction in the award, and the case would be settled. This isn’t surprising. The RIAA would just like the case to be over, but doesn’t want to set the precedent, so they ask Thomass-Rasset to pay less, but the “trade” is to get the decision deleted. Thomas-Rasset quickly rejected the offer, and now it seems likely that the RIAA will reject the reduced amount and everyone will go back to trial over just the damage amount. In an interesting bit of spin, Thomas-Rasset’s lawyers are claiming that this shows that the RIAA just wants to use this case as a “bogeyman” in order “to scare people into doing what they want,” rather than as an attempt to actually recover any real damages.

  • Talkin’ Palm – Week ending 23 Jan 10

    It’s a pretty cool phone…

Says Jon Fortt, Fortune’ Brainstorm Tech when describing the new Palm Pixi Plus arriving at Verizon on Monday.  He remarked, "Even without the WiFi trick, there is plenty to like about the Pixi Plus." Other reviewers were not so kind. He did make a point to say this:

"Until now, Palm has had a first-rate mobile operating system hidden behind small-screen phones on Sprint’s network. The Pixi Plus and Pre Plus address the network issue. Now it’s time to really upgrade the hardware."

The bulk of the happenings this week were related to the "Plus" webOS devices which will be available on Monday from Verizon. There was also a lot of talk about the new pricing plans announced by Verizon and AT&T.

Let’s talk Palm by continuing the rundown of reviews.

  • AT&T providing iPad 3G service without contracts

    iPad AT&T pricing

If you’re considering picking up an Apple when they launch a couple of months from now and you plan on taking it on the go, you’ll want to know about the extra fees you’ll incur if you choose to go the with AT&T-provided 3G access plans. First, though, your 3G iPad will cost $130 more than the Wi-Fi-only version. Once you get it, you’ve got two options with AT&T:

    • $29.99 per month unlimited data plan
    • $14.99 per month for 250MB of monthly data

It’s a good deal for monthly 3G access, especially when you consider the fact that both plans are pre-paid month-to-month plans that don’t require any sort of contract. The other benefit that you get from picking up a 3G iPad model is assisted GPS, which the Wi-Fi-only iPad lacks.

  • GM offers incentives to Toyota and Lexus owners facing recall headaches

Hoping to capitalize on the problems facing Toyota and its recalls, GM will offer a monthlong incentive to Toyota and Lexus owners. The move comes as a response to “thousands” of calls and e-mails to dealers from Toyota owners asking for help (believe it or not).

The incentive runs through the end of Feb. and will offer the following:

    • Those who choose to lease a vehicle may waive three payments for up to a total of $1,000.
    • Qualifying customers who are financing a vehicle purchase can receive 0 percent financing for up to 60 months.
    • Cash buyers can receive $1,000 off their purchase.

According to GM spokesman Tom Henderson, the incentive applies to GMC, Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles.

Toyota announced yesterday that it will suspend sales of eight models that are involved in a recall for sticking accelerator pedal.
