  • NSF Solicitations

nsf1Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) – The MRI Program serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments for research and research training in our Nation’s institutions of higher education, museums, science centers, and not-for-profit organizations.  Development and acquisition of research instrumentation for shared inter- and/or intra-organizational use are encouraged, as are development efforts that leverage the strengths of private sector partners to build instrument development capacity at academic institutions.  To accomplish these goals, the MRI program assists with the acquisition or development of shared research instrumentation that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs. Instruments are expected to be operational for regular research use by the end of the award period.  The MRI program does not support the acquisition or development of a suite of instruments to outfit research facilities or to conduct independent research activities simultaneously.  Instrument acquisition or development proposals that request funds from NSF in the range $100,000-$4 million will be accepted from all eligible organizations. Cost-sharing at the level of 30% of the total project cost is required for Ph.D.-granting institutions of higher education and for non-degree-granting organizations.  Non-Ph.D.-granting institutions of higher education are exempt from the cost-sharing requirement.  Full Proposal Deadline Date:  April 21, 2010.

  • Schwarzenegger: Outsource Prisoners To Mexico

    schwarzenegger tbi

Schwarzeneggers’s daily stunts to keep his state afloat are getting more ridiculous.

The governor probably wasn’t joking yesterday, when he suggested outsourcing California’s overcrowded prison system to Mexico.

Specifically, he would send the state’s 19,000 imprisoned illegal immigrants to prisons south of the border.

    SF Chronicle:

“We pay them to build the prisons down in Mexico and then we have those undocumented immigrants be down there in a prison. … And all this, it would be half the cost to build the prisons and half the cost to run the prisons,” Schwarzenegger said, predicting it would save the state $1 billion that could be spent on higher education.

Lou Dobbs would have a picnic with that.

  • Chinese Songwriter Pens Tune About China’s Expanding Real Estate Bubble

Shanghai Bubble 10National Public Radio has a great piece on a man named Liu Shuqiu, a Chinese resident who’s written a song about the housing bubble that’s forming in China.

NPR: Just over three years ago, songwriter Liu Shuqiu protested China’s high housing prices with a satirical song that urged “people who don’t want to be slaves to their mortgages” to rise up.

The song used the tune of the Internationale, the anthem of international socialism, and the lyrics exhorted:

We should fight for houses, shatter the developers to pieces. Don’t think we are obedient; the consequences will be serious if we get mad.

One of Shuqiu’s main concerns is one we’ve shared in the past – that nearly everyone in China is levering up and buying property while the getting is good.

  • Be Careful Writing About Tintin; The Lawyer For The Tintin Estate Might Sue

I’ve never quite understood how various brands decide to go about attacking their biggest fans, but sometimes common sense isn’t so common. Robert Ring sends in a story from a few weeks ago, about how the lawyer who represents the estate of the guy who created the cartoon character Tintin has been suing fans who have written about Tintin, including a guy named Bob Garcia who had written five essays about Tintin. According to the original report:

“One pamphlet drew links between his twin passions — Tintin and Sherlock Holmes. Another looked at the cinematographic references in Herge’s works. Two of the five, printed on average 500 times, used ‘graphical citations’ of Tintin drawings.”

In the US, this would clearly be fair use. In the UK, where this is happening? Garcia “has been ordered by British courts to hand over £35,000 or face the possibility of having his house and belongings seized.” In response, many people are organizing a boycott of the new Tintin movie. Nice work. In overstepping common sense bounds to try to squeeze a tiny bit more money out of a fan who was just writing about a character, this lawyer has succeeded in getting people to proactively shun the movie.

Of course, the link above also points out that the lawyer, Nick Rodwell, has a bit of a history making somewhat questionable decisions in dealing with how others perceive Tintin. Apparently, last year, his own blog on Tintin.com had to be shut down after he accused some journalist critics of not liking him or Tintin because “the children of those critics had autism and couldn’t appreciate Tintin.” Oh, and did we mention that the reason Rodwell is representing the estate of Tintin creator Herge is because he married Herge’s widow?

  • Videos: Saab and Spyker CEOs talk about the sale, workers celebrate in Trollhättan

Click above to watch the videos after the jump

The latest chapter of the Saab saga appears to be a happy one, with Spyker coming up with a winning bid during the 11th hour and saving the proud Swedish automaker from closure at the hands of General Motors. After the jump are a few videos related to the deal, including a 10 minute video of the Spyker/Saab press conference, with Saab CEO Jan Åke Jonsson and Spyker CEO Victor Muller talking about how the deal was done, and where the two companies go from here. If you click through, you’ll also find jubilant footage of the celebration in Trollhättan, where workers were given the day off as the liquidators were told to go home.

All is not wine and roses, however, as Spyker will doubtlessly have its hands full trying to fill up Saab’s product pipeline after the current crop of GM-derived new models (9-5 sedan and Sportcombi, 9-4X, 9-3X) wear thin, so it will be interesting to see how they go about developing their next generation of products.

In the meantime, Spyker could benefit from Saab a lot faster than the other way-around, though, as it should be able to leverage a portion of the Swedish automaker’s 1,400 dealerships worldwide to expand its global reach. Muller says that even leveraging 10 percent of the Saab dealers will be significant. Hit the jump to watch the fascinating videos for yourself.

  • iWork for the iPad: Productivity On-the-Go

    iWork for the iPad

Well, I am sold. There is now a real reason to buy the iPad. As if all of the other functions weren’t enough (e-reader, iPod, photo viewer, browser, and more), I can now work on documents with complete ease.

The iPad appears to be a real productivity tool with the launch of iWork for the iPad. This is a completely new version of iWork according to Phil Schiller, designed specifically for the iPad. Each application has a gorgeous user interface designed to make it easy to either create slides, documents or spreadsheets. Further, each App also integrates the Media inspector for easy access to your photos and music.

    Keynote

From what we could see during Apple’s presentation, you can rearrange slides by pressing on each and then move them accordingly. In addition, there is a unique slide management feature in that you can tap multiple slides, and with a gesture, it moves the slides into a bundle. This should definitely be a timesaver for many folks. Lastly, we learned that the iPad also has an optional cable for connecting with a projector, making it easy to use the device as your primary presentation tool.

    Pages

Like its desktop counterpart, you can create publications with standard text and images. However, you can also use gestures (pinch for example) to move images around the publications and more. What’s interesting about this feature  is that it could make placement possibly easier than using a mouse with the desktop version, as long as the proximity “drop” is accurate.

    Numbers

From what was demonstrated at the Apple Event, the iPad version of Numbers automatically displays fields and sums (which then infers what the output will be). Otherwise, this version seems relatively comparable to its desktop partner.

What is the bottom line (price and more)?

Interestingly enough, Apple is pricing the Apps individually at $9.99, instead of in a bundle like the desktop suite. This might change by launch time, although it’s a pretty reasonable price for each app, given the richness in functionality. Further, each app shares the desktop file format, so you can be sure not to lose any fidelity in your documents. And you can import Microsoft Office documents too. Lastly, these versions will allow you to email them in iWork ’09 and PDF formats.

As a sidebar, this is an interesting tactic for Apple given that on the iPhone, they’ve ceded document creation/editing to both Documents2Go and QuickOffice (which both only support Microsoft Office file formats). This is a bold step for them to broaden the availability of the iWork suite at such a reasonable price. I wonder if Microsoft is taking notice, and more importantly, I wonder if we’ll see versions for the iPhone too…

  • Apple unveils “iPad” tablet computer

Apple® today introduced iPad, a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more.

iPad’s responsive high-resolution Multi-Touch™ display lets users physically interact with applications and content.

iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds— thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook.

iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad, and will run almost all of the over 140,000 apps in the App Store. iPad will be available in late March starting at the breakthrough price of just $499.

“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

iPad features 12 next-generation Multi-Touch applications. Every app works in both portrait and landscape, automatically animating between views as the user rotates iPad in any direction.

The precise Multi-Touch interface makes surfing the web on iPad an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. Reading and sending email is fun and easy on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard.

Import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. Watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD or flip through pages of an e-book you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.

iPad runs almost all of the over 140,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. The iTunes® Store gives you access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 11 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 8,000 films including over 2,000 in stunning high definition video.

Apple also announced the new iBooks app for iPad, which includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile device. The iBookstore will feature books from major and independent publishers.

Apple also introduced a new version of iWork® for iPad, the first desktop-class productivity suite designed specifically for Multi-Touch. With Pages®, Keynote® and Numbers® you can create beautifully formatted documents, stunning presentations with animations and transitions, and spreadsheets with charts, functions and formulas.

The three apps will be available separately through the App Store for $9.99 each.

iPad syncs with iTunes just like the iPhone and iPod touch, using the standard Apple 30-pin to USB cable, so you can sync all of your contacts, photos, music, movies, TV shows, applications and more from your Mac or PC.

All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

iPad’s brilliant 9.7-inch, LED-backlit display features IPS technology to deliver crisp, clear images and consistent color with an ultra-wide 178 degree viewing angle. The highly precise, capacitive Multi-Touch display is amazingly accurate and responsive whether scrolling web pages or playing games.

The intelligent soft keyboard pioneered on iPhone takes advantage of iPad’s larger display to offer an almost full-size soft keyboard. iPad also connects to the new iPad Keyboard Dock with a full-size traditional keyboard.

iPad is powered by A4, Apple’s next-generation system-on-a-chip. Designed by Apple, the new A4 chip provides exceptional processor and graphics performance along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.* Apple’s advanced chemistry and Adaptive Charging technology deliver up to 1,000 charge cycles without a significant decrease in battery capacity over a typical five year lifespan.**

iPad comes in two versions—one with Wi-Fi and the other with both Wi-Fi and 3G. iPad includes the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the 3G versions support speeds up to 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA networks. Apple and AT&T announced breakthrough 3G pre-paid data plans for iPad with easy, on-device activation and management.

Continuing Apple’s dedication to designing and creating environmentally responsible products, each iPad enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy-efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.

Apple today released a new Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPad, so developers can create amazing new applications designed to take advantage of iPad’s capabilities. The SDK includes a simulator that lets developers test and debug their iPad apps on a Mac, and also lets developers create Universal Applications that run on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

    Pricing & Availability

iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model, $699 (US) for the 64GB model.

The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries for a suggested retail price of $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

International pricing and worldwide availability will be announced at a later date. iBookstore will be available in the US at launch.

*Apple tested wireless battery life by browsing web pages and receiving email over an AirPort® network, never letting the system go to sleep during the test, and keeping the display at half brightness. This is a typical scenario of use on the go, resulting in a battery performance number that is very relevant to mobile users.

**A properly maintained iPad battery is designed to retain 80 percent or more of its original capacity during a lifespan of up to 1,000 recharge cycles. Battery life and charge cycles vary by use and settings.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh.

Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications.

Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

  • iBooks App & iBookstore

The new Apple iPad, as widely anticipated, will have an e-book reader built-in to the device. The iBooks app displays a bookshelf of all your titles alá Delicious Library or the Classics iPhone app. When you tap a book to read, you can tap on the right or left edge to flip the page or drag the page manually. When looking at your bookshelf, there is also a button to the iBook Store to purchase books.

The iBookstore will allow for browsing and purchasing books on the iPad. What is exciting is that this new feature will rely on the ePub standard rather than some proprietary Apple format. ePub was developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum and works on several devices and platforms like the Sony Reader and Adobe Digital Editions for your desktop computer. You can think of it as the “MP3″ of e-book formats.

Five large publishers (Penguin, Harper Collins, Macmillan, Hachette Book Group, and Simon & Schuster) announced support today and the store will be open to other publishers soon. Not surprisingly, McGraw-Hill was not on the list of large publishers today.

So is the iPad a Kindle Killer? I think the biggest advantage that Apple will bring to the e-book reader market is a reading experience that is on par with the Amazon Kindle, but on a multi-purpose device that will have wider appeal. Apple has absolutely nailed the relationship between devices and content stores in the past with the iPod / iTunes Music Store and the iPhone / App Store and I expect that the iPad will nail the e-book experience on both the device and the store.

Sure the iPad starts at $499 and the Kindle starts at $259 and the “E Ink” display is nicer to use outside, but I think a lot of people will consider the extra $240 well spent to get all the extra features of the iPad. When you consider that the iPad offers a full-color LCD screen that can also support video embedded in the iBooks app, I think the iPad will be the biggest e-reader device yet. It will just appeal to a wider audience. The Amazon Kindle is dead.

I am looking forward to curling up with one of these to see what the experience is like. I wonder if the Apple Store will stock the Maxell Blown Away chair that Steve was using on stage to go with it as an accessory?

  • Third Parties Already Developing for Apple’s iPad

While the iPad will run all current iPhone and iPod touch applications (either in 1x or 2x sizes), the newest SDK (available today) supports iPad specific development. Below are a handful of apps from developers who were given a head start of about two weeks to show what they could do for the iPad.

    Nova

One of (if not the) largest game developers in the App Store, Gameloft demo’d their first person shooter, Nova. Multitouch interaction with full screen first-person shooting glory — from the sounds of it, not bad for only a couple weeks of lead time.

    The New York Times

In an extremely short time frame, the 150 year old newspaper has brought a beautiful digital rendition of its publication to the iPad. Full screen perusal of the newspaper looks incredible (also demo’d earlier by Steve), and may be the closest I get to reading the morning news with a plate of chocolate chip cookies (as my dad used to do).

    Brushes

An art browser and sketch pad that allows you to paint. Reminds me of the Caricature artist’s drawing pads you find at county fairs. It looks a lot deeper in capability than just caricatures of course , and I’m betting that this app will be somewhat of a defining demo for this type of device. Artists will likely love the marriage of iPad and Brushes.

    Need for Speed: Shift

Need for Speed: Shift demo’d in full-screen glory. An amazing driver-seat view of racing goodness, where you can touch the rear view mirror to get a better view of the competition fast approaching from behind. The graphics and clarity look amazing! Apple is definitely going to hit the gaming industry hard with this device.

    MLB

One of the early demos when third party apps came about was the MLB application for tracking game scores and live action. Well they’re back, and this looks cooler than ever. If you’re a MLB fan, this will be a no-brainer for you. Using a live feed of data, the game data is modeled in realtime, complete with actual inline video feed of the game itself. Oh, and Boxscores across the top to keep tabs on all the happenings around the league.

So in just about two weeks, five developers have turned out some seriously impressive apps to run natively in full screen on the iPad. Imagine what some of those hundreds of developers will do with this device and a month! We’ll get a chance to find out in just 60 days. Until then, save your pennies.

  • Gartman: Tonight Obama Begins His Shift Away From The Left

    Barack Obama Law Review

Earlier, Doug Kass offered his advice for how to trade the State of the Union.

If Obama talks jobs and the economy you should buy.

If he attacks Wall Street fat cats, you should sell.

Dennis Gartman is anticipating the former, which, if true, and if you accept Kass’s formulation, means the next 90 minutes are a buying opportunity.

The Gartman Letter: Too, the market awaits the President State of the Union Address…President Obama’s Expectations are high amongst this young President’s supporters on the farther Left that he will put forth larger, bolder more progressive policies, but those expectations will be dashed.

This young President may make mistakes but he is a career politician with an inordinate sense of the public’s wishes, and the public does not wish to be pulled or pushed farther to the Left. Rather, the public wishes that the President himself would quietly repudiate those in the Democrat Party’s “progressive” wing and move swiftly and manifestly to the centre. This is what Bill Clinton did when his Presidency was foundering early on, and it served him well. This is what all President’s do when their public support levels begin to wane, for the US is a centre- right country, and it prefers to see its Presidents near the centre at all times. In that light we expect to see the President tamp down “progressive” policies and adopt centrist ones instead.

Too, and further, the “incident” along the border between North and South Korea has engendered urgency on the part of those speculatively inclined to tamp down their more “radical” ideas and to seek safety above all else.
