  • CHART OF THE DAY: Here’s Why The Discretionary Spending Freeze Is A Joke

The White House revealed that President Barack Obama will propose a 3 year freeze in discretionary spending during the State of the Union tomorrow night.

Will the freeze make a material difference in the overall spending by the government or the budget deficit?

    Not likely.

Discretionary spending was unlikely to grow by very much in the future, at least not as a percentage of the GDP. That’s even more true if defense spending is exempt from the freeze, as it is in Obama’s proposal. The real sources of spending growth are non-discretionary: the net interest expense on the national debt and entitlement spending.

The chart below shows the government’s own projections of its spending as a percentage of GDP. Discretionary spending is shown in the beige section of the bar. As you can see, freezing discretionary spending will do very little to reduce overall spending.

  • Yahoo Q4 Earnings — Another Big Yawn (YHOO)

carol bartz yahooThanks for joining us!  Here’s the release >

QUICK TAKE: Yahoo’s results were in line with Street expectations, which is disappointing.  The company needs to get its mojo back, and these results certainly don’t have much mojo.

Revenue was slightly better than expected, EBITDA was slightly worse.  The company is arguing that costs related to the Microsoft search deal should be excluded from the results.  They shouldn’t.

Even after excluding everything under the sun, the core business is still shrinking: Total adjusted revenue (ex divestitures and forex adjustments) dropped -5%.  Owned and operated search dropped a staggering 15%.  Owned and operated display dropped 1% (that this is relatively good news is telling).  Free cash flow was flat year over year, despite massive cost cuts.

On a positive note, Yahoo finally expects to return to growth in Q1.  And the Q1 outlook for revenue is slightly–slightly–better than expected.

Here are the key consensus numbers versus expectations:

    • Gross Revenue was $1.72 billion, slightly ahead of $1.67 Billion estimate.
    • EBITDA was $403 million, slightly below $433 million estimate.
    • EPS was $0.11, in line with $0.11 estimate.  Excluding Microsoft costs (don’t), EPS was $0.15.
    • Q1 outlook $1.625 billion of revenue (midpoint), versus $1.61 estimate.

    Here are the earnings slides:

    CONFERENCE CALL NOTES: (Jay Yarow)

Hit refresh for the latest. The earnings call is here.

4:41: Listening to rocking music, fingers crossed the company says something interesting on the call.

4:45: Music totally changed. More low key now.

    5:01: Here we go…

5:03: Carol talking, a year of significant change, “what a ride it’s been…very bumpy, very very glad it’s over”

5:04 Carol first phase…I looked at consumers, looked at the homepage, decided to close down asked employees to sign their name next to some projects so they’d be proud.

    next phase, work with advertisers

third phase, how do we generate value? Better more targeted environment for advertisers.

Click through rates have more than doubled.

5:06: Carol, we’re leading in targeting and insights. Truth be told no one has made ads as relevant as content 100% of the time. If we can, it can be better for the user.

5:07: Launched homepage, suite of apps, introduced new ad products, delivered products to deliver better ROI for advertisers, and did the search deal. All while in the worst economic environment.

5:08: Compare with traditional media and we held up pretty well. Overall, we’re returning to a more normal state. These results are due to hard work.

5:09: Tim talking now. O and O is flat, which is good. Display grew 26% sequentially, strongest since 2006. Guaranteed performed very well. Pricing recovered after challenging 2009.

5:12: Just last week intro network distribution to help finely tune keyword bids. Compared to last quarter 8 of 10 ad categories grew.

5:12: Tim,,,search is important, growing search rev is important. On volume, search mkt spending, Yhoo network to inc volume. On monetization, aggressive roadmap we’ll execute.

5:13 GAAP income $119 mill, includes $32 million for MSFT deal w/o which well above high end of guidance.

5:14: Last time we’ll report OCF. Here on in operating income is the key metric.

5:15: Pretax value in YHOO japan and alibaba is $9.5 billion…A return to top line growth in first since Q3 2008….TAC should be 28-9% GAAP revenue.

    5:17 Full year 2010 grow revenue…MSFT rev share won’t start in 2010.

5:19: Drive margin expansion and ROIC, 15-20% operating margins and ROIC by 2012. For 2009 margins were 6% and ROIC was 5%

“We’re building an execution machine here, and you’ll see that emerge.”

5:19 Back to Carol.I said display ads would come back, it always has. We expect positive momentum to keep building. We have some of the best premium content.

5:20 Advertisers need display to position a brand, you can’t do it with search.

5:21 ACCIDENTAL CURSE: Carol says “shat up” when she meant shoot up. Does that count?

5:21: What were working on will let advertisers buy huge audiences that are target with easy tools.

5:22: Our major competition is television. That’s where advertisers spend money and where we are taking share, so we’re working on videos. Partnership with Electus brings heavy hitter Ben Silverman. We give them massive reach, but we’re not mimicing t.v. formats.

5:23: Another thing we get asked about, is social. We’re partnering with Facebook. WE think social and video should be integrated.

5:23 So that’s social, video, display. Search: Still important. “top priority.” recently hired sashi seth. Already made changes to search advertising.

5:25 Implement toolbar and browser efforts for search. We’ve revitalized Yahoo with marketing. Search will be part of that marketing.

5:26: Mobile is getting buzz, so lets talk about it. We’re focused on great experiences. People in 187 countries use mobile internet experience. Soon coming to Android.

5:27 Signed one of the largest mobile ad buys. We work with 100 OEMs and carriers. Looking for right partners.

Another topic of interest is M&A. Looking for good stuff. 2010 is NOT about divestitures.

For us 2010 is about acquisitions and investments. We look at 3 buckets — small to medium, impt technology. 2. content for audience content communities, that would fit well. 3. Is geographic. No plans for big acquisitions like peer to peer plays.

5:29 We’re looking outward, no longer looking inward.

    5:30 Q&A starts.

5:31: When will be see pageviews pick up? Carol: Lot of the metrics, people back away from pageviews. Our technology drives people away, so w’re actually trying to look at engagement.–frankly looking for revenue growth because we drive quality insights to our advertisers. Really about taking these 600 mill uniques to deliver revenue for us and CMOs. As for ad campaign, it has two different vectors. In US it’s to change behavior and attitudes. In India and Europe it’s to get more more known better, and to grow, and both things happened but it’s onyl three months, too soon to say. Also, as I said we’re focused on products now. The first was to wake people up change their attitude about Yhoo, now we introduce products.

5:37: Where does search bottom? Tim: On search, we’re not commenting on comScore. Toolbar is important, but we’re focused on O and O. Grew volume over 10% globally. This is a key priority. Look for us to be active and increase volume.

5:39: Carol: Quality based advertising, the advertisers get great content. Advertisers trust us, our users trust us.

5:39: Where’s International, how to make better? We’re going to focus where there’s internet coming on line, Indonesia, India, Brazil, in smaller markets like Vietnam we’re great.

5:42: Metrics for the homepage as related to the campaign? Carol, usage continues to grow faster than the rest of the network. Pleased with today module. Content is more engaging. We have 200% click thru in local part of the news, that’s importatn. We’re removing hovers tonight. We were driving people crazy, driving advertisers crazy, so we listened.

5:43: Tim…look at ad campagin, we’re spending 1-1.5% on brand awareness which is pretty low.

5:44: Carol…Entertainment is always lumpy. Depends on movies are coming out. In this quarter, believe it or not, Avatar not a big online budget, something as simple as that will drive it down.

5:45: Tim…Entertainment display is down, but search was up, not sure what to make of that.

5:46: Carol, we think that network distribution is really going to have a positive impact on search, it’s just starting so I don’t want to forcast a specific featrue or operation. Part of a lot of efforts. Took eye off ball this summer as we digested MSFT deal. Then went full bore…add to search quality, and real honest to god ROI.

5:49: Netowrk distribution, series of visibilty and analystics to help advertisers manage campaigns. YHOO has been light on analytics, you will see us focus on that a lot.

5:51 Ad churn as you transition to MSFT? Carol, I’m not an expert on ad churn. Inquiries I’ve done from the higher level…what I’ve been told it went very well. We were careful managing it marketplace by marketplace. Nobody has put red flags in front of me.

5:53 Found a leader for International? Carol…Announced internally, now that I think about it, surprised it didn’t get out…decided to re-org the Internationl–Amia, Aisa Pac, Americas. Have all three regions report to me. Couldn’t fing a leader for International up to our standards. Also, I really wanted the International to be tied to us. Want three leaders on emerging markets.

5:56 Where you at on GOOG-China dispute? Carol…we have a good relationship with alibaba. That’s all there is to it.

5:58 Tim, focus on paid clicks and not tool bar distribution. We’re focused on growing volume and RPS which grew Q/Q. We’ll have browser upgrade offers toolbar offers. New products like trending now, marketing on and off the network. RPS was up 8%, which is good news.

5:59: Carol, what do you see on engagement? We’re actually encouraged by engagement on the today module, and obviously mail. Excited about things in video. What I don’t like, what is hard to phase into is people are engaged on our site, but they’re engaged on Facebook. We’re happy with our engagement, but we can’t keep up with Facebook. We now some sites need — obvs. sports and fantasy, engagement with lifestyles and gossip is high. Finance is down because last year everyone was worried about what was melting down.

6:02: LAST QUESTION! Here we go…Is attitude of content providers good or bad for you? Carol, when we think of content…uh let me give a content pitch, when we think of combo of orig content, liscense and links, and our ability to mix it up. We’ve been a good ocntent partner. Go to most publishers and they’ll tell you taht. We have a good partnership woth newspapers and the AP. As for Rupert and the fearless Mr. Jobs, I don’t think it’s going to switch over nite. Alot of content is not unique enough, unless everyone goes paid, most not able to have paid aspect. We like to optimize real time. Trust me we’re thinking of this in  light of the tablet what ever it might be, especially in light of mobile. Content is extremely critical.

    PREVIEW:

Investors are losing patience with Yahoo (YHOO).  There’s only so much that tough talk will do: At some point, Carol Bartz has to start putting up the numbers.

With Yahoo’s search business continuing to implode, all eyes are on the company’s display revenue.  When, if ever, will this business start growing again?

And, more importantly, will Carol drop the F-bomb?

    Key Consensus Estimates:

    • Gross Revenue: $1.67 Billion
    • Net Revenue: $1.23 billion
    • EBITDA: $433 million
    • GAAP EPS: $0.11

The outlook will also be crucial. Here’s Citi analyst Mark Mahaney’s “cheat sheet” with expectations:

2011 Ford Explorer Spy Shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

In a bit of good news, always welcomed in today’s battered automotive sector, Ford has announced it will add 1,200 jobs to the Chicago area when it moves production of the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer to its underutilized Illinois plant. The announcement is not a surprise – the plans have been in place for about a year – as the automaker has spent around $400 million retrofitting the plant in anticipation of the upcoming SUV’s arrival. Experts say the Chicago plant will likely have to add a second shift to accommodate the Explorer production.

The Chicago plant has been making the redesigned Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS since last year. The 2011 Ford Explorer, redesigned on a smaller and more fuel-efficient car unibody platform, is anticipated to arrive in dealers in August or September and will likely be the plant’s highest-volume vehicle. Thanks for the tip, Leonard!

  • New 16GB Nokia X6: Half the Storage, But At What Price? [Nokia]

The 32GB Nokia X6 just got a complementary 16GB counterpart. It lacks the awkwardly named “Comes With Music” feature of its big brother, but keeps the 3.2-inch capacitive screen and is compatible with (newly free) Ovi maps navigation.

Other specs? Why, of course! The 16GB X6 has pretty sick battery life, with 18 hours of standby and 35 hours of music playback. It’s also got a 5-megapixel camera that also shoots video, TV-out, and comes pre-loaded with games from EA and Gameloft.

No word on pricing yet, unfortunately, which is really the thing that’ll determine whether it’s worth a closer look. With a release in just a few months, expect more details to emerge soon along those lines. [Nokia via Engadget]

  • If It Were Up To Me, The iPad Would Have A Touch Sensitive Case

This isn’t a rumor, it’s just a wish. I’m hoping that the Apple Tablet that is announced tomorrow will have a capacitive touch interface that extends past the screen and to the actual case. Particularly the back of the device where the fingers will naturally rest during two-handed use.

Touch interfaces are something I’m sort of obsessed with. Like most people, the iPhone was what really opened my eyes to what it could do. I was one of the first individuals to actually buy a Microsoft Surface computer, happily paying $17k, including delivery and warranty. And I joyfully tested the Microsoft TouchWall, and still beg them to actually ship that OS and touch kit. I’ve also bought at least one of just about every touch computer out there, just to see how they perform.

Touch is awesome as a user input mechanism. But there are problems. One problem is that it doesn’t work well at all on machines sitting on a desktop because of arm fatigue.

Another problem, that also affects laptop and mobile devices, is the simple fact that you have to block part of the screen from your eyes while you touch it. It’s a real problem for a number of applications, particularly gaming. Touch is great, but blocking the screen isn’t.

That’s why I’ve obsessed over the 10/GUI concept and hope that something very similar to it comes to desktop computing soon. There’s touch, just not on the screen.

The Apple Magic Mouse is a variation on this, giving users a capacitive touch interface on the top of their mouse. My work efficiency increased dramatically when I started using that mouse, and I’ll never go back.

There are rumors that the next iPhone will have a capacitive touch case. That’s great for the iPhone, but there’s a far more compelling use case for a tablet to have a capacitive touch case. That’s because when you hold it you’ll naturally put your palms on the side edges of the front and wrap your hands around the back. And where your fingers touch the case is a really awesome place to put capacitive touch.

Lots has been said about the supposedly amazing way people will interact with the Apple Tablet. And while the new gestures look to be pretty awesome, that still doesn’t address the problem of blocking the screen with touch, or having to move your hands to do basic navigation like scrolling and clicking.

If I was building the tablet, I’d include touch on the case as well as the screen. Has Apple done that? We’ll find out soon.

  • CES closes the books: 120,000 attendees and 5,000 press trekked to Vegas

top-trends-1-3dThe Consumer Electronics Show drew more than 120,000 attendees and 5,000 press to Las Vegas in the first week of January.

That compares to about 113,000 attendees and 4,000 press the year before. That’s an indicator of a solid recovery in the technology industry. It also shows that CES remains the biggest global platform for launching new products in the technology ecosystem. Official audited numbers will be available later this year.

Gary Shapiro, chief executive of the Consumer Electronics Association, which hosts the show every year, said that more companies are signing up for next year’s show every day. We can attest that there was plenty of news to write about, as VentureBeat published scores of stories during the show. About 2,500 companies displayed more than 20,000 new products at the show. Tablets, eBook readers, and 3-D TV stole the show.

The show’s peak ear for attendance was 2006, where there were 152,203 attendees. The peak year for exhibitors was 2008, where there were 3,072 companies. Here’s our picks for the best products of CES 2010 and our post on the top trends at CES.

  • Analyst: Apple tablet must create a new device category

tabletAs the hype builds about Apple’s big product launch tomorrow, which everyone believes will involve the unveiling of a tablet device, two analysts at Forrester are casting a skeptical eye on some of the excitement. Charles Golvin and James McQuivey write that the tablet sounds like it’s “flawed in meaningful ways: It’s a computer without a keyboard, it’s a digital reader with poor battery life and a high price tag, and it’s a portable media player that can’t fit in a pocket.”

Despite those reservations, Golvin and McQuivey say they expect the device to be a big deal — but they think Apple needs to do three key things if it wants the tablet to become a mainstream device, rather than “a peculiarity.” Here’s their checklist (the bolded wording comes from Forrester, the rest is my paraphrase):

    1. Create a new device category around personal media. The tablet has the potential to link all of our media experiences on various devices, Golvin and McQuivey say. By storing and playing all your media on the tablet, then synchronizing that media across devices using online cloud computing infrastructure, Apple could create a new device category.
    2. Work their user experience magic on connectivity. In order to achieve that full media experience, Apple will need the tablet to work on home broadband, WiFi, and cell networks. To make this happen, Golvin and McQuivey suggest that the company could become a virtual network operator, tapping into the AT&T and Verizon networks as necessary.
    3. Break open the meaning of the word “device.” Apple needs to create an ecosystem of devices around the tablet, the pair says — and don’t call those other devices accessories, because they’re more than that. Some suggestions: Bluetooth keyboards, docks that can turn the tablet into an alarm clock or a radio, and TVs where the tablet can send its video footage.

All of these sound like solid ideas, and also speak to the high hopes that many have for Apple’s announcement. If chief executive Steve Jobs demonstrates another tablet computer tomorrow, albeit one that has the normal Apple stylishness, that will be awfully disappointing.

  • FCC expands ETF inquiry, fires off letters to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Google

Verizon might be getting picked on for introducing its whopper $350 “advanced device” ETF, but the FCC has decided that it wants answers from everyone on concerns that “there is no standard framework for structuring and applying ETFs throughout the wireless industry.” The commission has sent letters (via fancy certified mail, in case you’re wondering) to all of the other biggies — AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile — along with Google, asking a series of questions probing how each carrier’s ETFs are determined and applied. Google gets roped in for its nasty equipment recovery fee, but all of the recipients share a common dubious distinction: the frickin’ FCC — a bureaucracy filled to the brim with lawyers and… well, bureaucrats — can’t figure out terms that everyday customers are expected to understand. Of course, most customers don’t have the distinction of being able to send a certified letter to their carrier probing fees and require a prompt and complete response, so we’re happy to see the feds get to the bottom of this. Sure, ETFs may ultimately prove to be completely justified in their current form considering the expense that carriers put up to subsidize hot hardware, it’s true — but regardless, it’s in everyone’s best interest to make sure they’re spelled out in ways even FCC commissioners (and Engadget editors) can appreciate.

  • iriver K1 Smart HD shows off unique UI for the cameras, flashes a hint of CE underneath

We wouldn’t say iriver is pulling out all the stops on its new K1 Smart HD player, but it’s certainly putting a bit more love and polish into the device than we’ve seen from the company in recent months. Now a video of the UI has been unearthed, which shows a new touchscreen UI based on a sort of “circles” concept. There are smacks of a traditional grid and multi-homescreen interface as well, akin to iPhone or Android, with a bit of widget engine and exciting translucent overlays for good measure. A Cover Flow-styled music browser can actually be navigated through use of the accelerometer, and if you’re brave enough you can even dive into regular old Windows CE for exciting hijinks. Check the quick demo after the break.

  • ASUS DR-950 to be released in April for a likely £250

ASUS hasn’t exactly been tight-lipped about its DR-950 e-reader — you know, with it outing photos and all — but apparently the 9-inch E Ink, touchscreen reading device will be ready for buyers in April. ASUS told the guys at Electric Pig that it’s currently in process of shopping around for content partners, but plans to have the e-reader to market by springtime with a price tag in the range of £250 (about $354). Not too bad, though it’s tough to get too jazzed about a black-and-white model with the OLED color DR-570 version on the horizon.

  • Brad Pitt Bachelor Pad

Brad Pitt has secretly purchased a $1.13 million bachelor pad in the Hollywood Hills, reports say.

The father of six plopped down the cash on a home with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a bar area, even a cave built into the foundation, sources told the UK’s Daily Mail on Tuesday.

Whispers that Brad and longtime companion Angelina Jolie have entered Splitsville have been gaining steam ever since London’s News of the World published a report Sunday, which claimed the Hollywood couple had inked an agreement to separate and divide their property equally.

“The house oozes character,” a source blabbed to The Mail today. “Brad has had his eye on it for some time but he decided now was the right time to buy because he wanted a place to call his own.”

“He needs somewhere quiet that doesn’t have memories of Angie and where he can be alone and think about what he does next,” the insider added.

Brad and Angie own one mansion in L.A. and another in New Orleans.

  • U.S. gov’t announces texting ban for commercial truck and bus drivers

    Filed under:

It’s official: the U.S. Department of Transportation has made it a crime for inter-state truck drivers and drivers of coaches carrying more than eight passengers to text or use handheld cell phones while driving. The penalty for being caught doing so is a fine of up to $2,750.

The move has been planned for a while, with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood holding a summit last October to discuss the issue, and foreshadowing the texting ban for truck, coach and school bus drivers. And this won’t be the end of it, either. The message accompanying the news said, “In the months ahead, we’ll propose additional legal remedies and develop new tools that will help us… bring an end to the terrible dangers posed by distracted driving.” Here’s a +1 for safer roads. Hopefully.

  • Goli Otok

Croatia, Europe | Crime and Punishment

In 1948, only three years after the conclusion of the WWII and in the eve of the cold war, Marshal Tito, the supreme leader of Federative People’s Republic of Yugoslavia took a sharp political turn away from hard line communism, severed his ties to Joseph Stalin and Soviet Union and ushered his country into an era of openness unparalleled in any of the communist countries which remained hidden behind the iron curtain.

Liberal as it was, the communist regime in Yugoslavia was still an authoritarian regime, and Goli Otok was his most notorious prison, arguably its only true gulag. This barren islet, almost completely devoid of vegetation was originally used as a prison by Austro-Hungarian authorities during WWI as a place of internment of Russian prisoners of war.

In that way in which places of state terror seem to stay so through regime changes (the same buildings were often used by the Austro-Hungarians, then the Nazi’s, then the communists as prisons) the Communist regime turned it into a maximum-security, top-secret prison. The majority of convicts were Stalinist communists, the people who remained loyal to Soviet Union, many intellectuals or quasi-intellectuals, with a good dose of petty criminals sprinkled among them.

The professed goal of the prison was “moral correction” of the convicts, a process which took the form of hard labor in a quarry, conducted in the harsh climate of the rocky island, with it blistering hot and shadeless in summer, and an icy cold wind in winter. Mental torture conducted by guards as well as physical torture conducted by both guards and other inmates become a hallmark of the prison.

The existence of Goli Otok arguably disqualified Tito from any serious hope of winning the Nobel Peace prize despite his efforts through the Non-alignment movement and numerous diplomatic missions throughout the third world.

With the death of Stalin the relations between the USSR and Yugoslavia improved. Goli Otok prison was transferred from the federal jurisdiction to local government of Croatia. The need for a special prison for political dissidents disappeared, however the facility remained in use as an ordinary jail. It was finally shut down in 1988. Today, the memory of Goli Otok remains deeply embedded in minds of the generations which grew up in communist Yugoslavia.

The prison facilities are at present left to decay. An especially attention worthy detail for any visitor are the numerous propaganda paroles stenciled on the walls of buildings. To properly understand them some background info and the proper translation by the locals is needed.

Goli Otok was never intended to be a place od extermination. The great majority of prisoners survived. Many of the went on to write memoirs about their experiences on the island, and publish them after Tito’s death. This strange genre become increasingly popular in late 1980s and 1990s as Yugoslavia crumbled.

    Google-Nexus-One-51

Nothing upsets geeks more than grabbing a gadget the moment it becomes available only to find issues with it. Google feels your pain when it comes to your 3G connectivity woes on the Nexus One. Currently, Google is in the process of testing a software fix and the results look promising. Assuming everything gets sorted and fixed on Google’s end, the software update will become available via an OTA download. However, Google also claims that the 3G issues might be because of T-Mobile’s 3G footprint. Those living in fringe areas, or the edges of T-Mobile’s 3G coverage, can’t be helped because it’s beyond Google’s control. Funny, we didn’t hear too many complaints about 3G connectivity with the G1 or myTouch 3G. Though maybe people just had lower expectations then.
