    2011 Mazda Atenza (Mazda6):

    Press Release:

Mazda Releases Facelifted Atenza in Japan

    – Enhanced environmental and safety features, driving performance, interior and exterior quality; 2.0L engine models qualify for Japan’s eco-car tax breaks –

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has commenced sales of the facelifted Mazda Atenza (known overseas as the Mazda6) for the Japanese market. Available in three body styles — Sedan, Sport (five-door hatchback) and Sport Wagon — Mazda’s globally acclaimed mid-size car has been refined and evolved, and it goes on sale today at all Mazda and Mazda Anfini dealerships throughout Japan.

The Mazda Atenza has attracted a wide range of customers with its sporty styling and exceptional driving performance. The enhancements for the freshened Mazda Atenza are based on the Zoom-Zoom evolution development concept, and include improvements to its environmental and safety attributes, driving performance, interior and exterior design, and quality levels.

The 2.0-liter engine Atenza models, available in both the Sedan and Sport Wagon body types, have been updated with Mazda’s direct injection MZR 2.0L DISI*1 gasoline engine. This engine provides plenty of power as well as outstanding fuel economy that exceeds Japan’s “2010 fuel economy standard plus 15%.” All grades equipped with a 2.0-liter engine qualify for Japan’s eco-car incentive program and are subject to 50 percent less tax under the government’s eco-car tax reduction program. Additionally, the entire Atenza range, including front-wheel drive (FWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) grades, qualify as Super-Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (SU-LEV) by achieving exhaust emissions that are at least 75 percent lower than the levels set in the Japanese Government’s 2005 exhaust emissions standard.

Improvements to driving performance include updated power steering and suspension settings that have resulted in better handling and straight-line stability at high speeds. With newly optimized front and rear suspension, the freshened Atenza also realizes a stable, more premium quality ride and enhanced comfort.

The exterior of the facelifted Atenza adopts the new Mazda family face with a five-point front grille and other spirited design elements that enhance its sportiness. Both the 17-inch and 18-inch aluminum wheels have new designs, and the range of eight exterior body colors has been augmented with new tints. The brand new colors are Clear Water Blue Metallic and Midnight Bronze Mica, which expresses a premium identity.

Inside, the center panel stack has a smooth, glossy, piano-black finish. Beautiful and tactile chrome plating adorns the climate control and audio dials, and other parts. This color combination in the interior conveys a refined and high quality atmosphere.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (including sales taxes) range from 2,100,000 to 2,500,000 yen for the Sedan body type, 2,450,000 to 2,750,000 yen for the Sport model, and 2,250,000 to 2,750,000 yen for the Sport Wagon model. The target sales volume is 800 units per month.

Main features of the facelifted Mazda Atenza
    1. Design: emphasized sportiness and premium identity

The Mazda Atenza’s design concept is “bold & exquisite.” The updated model carries over the solid front face of its predecessor, and retains the beauty, strength and tension conveyed through its simple contours. With enhancements for a stronger expression of dynamism and sportiness, the latest facelifted Atenza expresses a more premium identity.

    Exterior

    * The front fascia features the five-point grille that has become a shared design element of all Mazda products. Strong lines that flow from the grille to the A-pillars, and contours that extend from the bottom of the lower grille horizontally along the foglight bezels, highlight the five-point grille and express sinuous dynamism and stability.
    * The Sport and Sport Wagon models have a larger brand symbol on their fascia, creating a bolder presence. Additionally, wing-shape moldings the same color as the vehicle body extend sideways from the brand symbol for an added sense of dynamism. The Sedan features a mesh grille and chrome plated decorations, which convey refinement and sportiness.
    * The 25EX and 25Z model grades feature newly designed bi-xenon headlights. The position lights are aligned with the headlights to produce a sharp wing shape that, combined with chrome-plated inner bezels, produces a look of exquisiteness and expansiveness.
    * The design of the discharge headlights on the 25S and 20S grades, and the halogen lights on the 25C and 20C grades, has been carried over from the pre-facelift Atenza, but with added chrome plating for a more premium identity.
    * The part of the rear combination light that curves toward the side of the body has a chrome-plated wing motif. This change gives the rear a stronger impression of width and superior quality. The rear lights’ wing motifs are extended on the Sport Wagon to suit its long body shape.
    * The Sport and Sport Wagon rear lights have clear inner covers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The Sedan has red inner covers and conventional bulbs.
    * Both the 17- and 18-inch aluminum wheels have new designs. The 17-inch wheels have an intricate form with each spoke twisted relative to the wheel center for a look of sporty, high-quality refinement. The 18-inch wheels have bold, strong-looking spokes that communicate dynamism and high-performance.
    * There are eight exterior body colors. Two colors (Clear Water Blue Metallic and Midnight Bronze Mica) are brand new. Two other colors (Graphite Mica and Black Mica) are new to the Mazda Atenza.

    Interior

    * In order to enhance the premium feel, a smooth, glossy, piano-black finish has been applied to the center panel, audio and air conditioner panel surrounds. For a consistent interior design, the shift gate and steering wheel spokes also feature the same piano-black finish.
    * Visually appealing and tactile chrome garnish is newly used on parts such as the climate control and audio dials, shift knob and inner door handles. The piano black and chrome combination renders a refined and high-quality interior environment.
    * Bold black leather seats and decoration panels with a sporty and refined silver-hairline finish come as standard equipment on the 25EX model grade. To enhance the premium flavor of the 25EX even further, brown leather seats are also available as a factory-installed option for the first time.
    * The 25Z grade comes with black, half-leather seats and decoration panels with a silver-hairline finish. The 25S and 20S grades have well-crafted black, flat-woven fabric upholstery with a contemporary pattern of flowing lines. The 25C and 20C grades have the same black, flat-woven seats with matte-silver decorative panels.

    2. Driving performance: A fine balance of comfort and driving pleasure which enhances the driver’s sense of oneness with the car

    * The engine lineup provides powerful driving performance as well as excellent fuel efficiency. Options include the direct injection MZR 2.0L DISI* and the responsive MZR 2.5L gasoline engines. To further improve the Atenza’s green credentials and affordability, both engines run on regular gasoline.
    * The five- and six-speed electronically-controlled automatic (Activematic) transmissions also feature Active Adaptive Shift (AAS). This allows the optimal gear to be selected depending on driving circumstances, enabling a linear and lively ride.
    * The 4WD model grades feature Mazda’s Active Torque Control Coupling 4WD System, which uses electronic control to optimally distribute torque between the front and rear axles depending on driving conditions and the road surface.
    * Newly tuned power-steering assist characteristics and optimized suspension settings increase steering torque at highway speeds, giving more feedback and reassuring handling. In addition, by making the vehicle respond more gently to driver inputs, the vehicle’s straight line stability is enhanced, so drivers can enjoy a more comfortable ride with greater confidence.
    * Finely tuned front and rear suspension and damping force settings realize a gentler, more comfortable ride. Even on coarse road surfaces, the ride is stable and smooth.
    * Under the body, the freshened Atenza features new plate-type deflectors in addition to the horseshoe shape front tire deflectors that have proved so effective on the current model. Larger rear tire deflectors contribute to the outstanding aerodynamics.

    3. Environmental and safety performance: Refined ride quality, evolved environmental and safety performance

    * The Sedan and Sport Wagon models with the 2.0-liter engine qualify for Japan’s eco-car tax reduction (50 percent) and incentive programs.
    * All model grades, including the 4WD grades for the first time, qualify as Super-Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (SU-LEV) by achieving exhaust emissions at least 75 percent lower than Japan’s 2005 standards.
    * All grades come with Mazda’s single-nanocatalyst technology, which provides superb exhaust purification performance while reducing the amount of precious metals needed by over 70 percent.
    * A new eco-drive support function (eco-lamp) clearly indicates when the car is running in a fuel-efficient manner, thereby encouraging a more eco-friendly driving style in a fun way. (Fitted on all grades except the 25Z with six-speed manual transmission).
    * Mazda’s adaptive front lighting system (AFS) with bi-xenon headlights is a newly adopted safety feature. The headlights automatically swivel to follow the road ahead and improve nighttime visibility (standard equipment on the 25EX and 25Z).
    * The FWD Sedan models have an upright seatbelt buckle in the rear center seat that is much easier to use.
    * Front Active Headrests are fitted as standard equipment to mitigate neck injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.
    * The updated Atenza grade with manual transmission features Mazda’s Hill Launch Assist (HLA) for the first time. It supports smooth starts when the vehicle is on a slope by preventing it from rolling backwards.
    * During emergency braking at speeds above 50 kilometers per hour, the Emergency Signal System (ESS) rapidly flashes the hazard warning lights to alert following drivers. ESS is standard equipment on all model grades.
    * Parking sensors to aid safe driving in narrow spaces are standard equipment on the 25EX and 25Z.
    * At speeds over 60 kilometers per hour, the Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM) system detects vehicles approaching from behind and alerts the driver. (Available on the 25EX and FWD automatic 25Z grade as a factory-installed option.)
    * Mazda’s Pre-crash Safety System detects oncoming obstacles, alerts the driver and, if necessary, automatically applies the brakes and pre-tensions the seatbelts to reduce the risk of injury. The Radar Cruise Control System uses a radar sensor to measure the speed and distance of the vehicle in front and automatically controls acceleration and deceleration to maintain a preset distance. Both systems are available as a factory-installed set option on the 25EX grade and the 25Z grade with automatic transmission.

    4. Equipment and functionality: An improved human-machine interface enhances the sense of oneness between car and driver

    * To make the steering-wheel controls easier to use, the Cross Functional-Network (CF-Net) has been simplified so that there is only one switch or button for each function.
    * To minimize driver eye movement away from the road, the exterior temperature and information from the audio system, climate control and trip computer are displayed together on a central display at the top of the instrument panel. The numbering on the odometer/tripmeter has also been enlarged to improve legibility.
    * The 40GB HDD satellite navigation system with a 7-inch display now also includes a terrestrial digital television receiver. Four tuners and four antennas enable stable reception of 12 seg and 1 seg terrestrial digital broadcasts. It includes a Bluetooth® hands-free system that can be controlled by voice commands or switches embedded in the steering wheel. It is compatible with Mazda’s G-BOOK Alpha system (available as factory-installed set option on all models).
    * A fully automatic climate control system with a pollen filter is equipped in all model grades. Temperature can be independently adjusted from the driver seat and front passenger seat.
    * A Bose® sound system with eight speakers was exclusively developed for the Atenza. It delivers clear and dynamic sound to all occupants in the cabin. It is equipped with Bose’s original driving noise compensation system, AudioPilotTM. (Available for all grades except the 20C and 20S as a factory-installed set option.)
    * A push-button ignition system, where the driver can start and stop the engine without having to insert a key, is available with Mazda’s advanced keyless entry system for all model grades except the 20C. (Standard equipment on the 25EX and 25Z. Available as a factory-installed set option on the 20S, 25C and 25S.)

  • TomTom data reveals U.S. drivers’ average speed, fastest highway

    Filed under:

If you have a TomTom, the eye in the sky has been watching you and tracking your interstate speeds over the past two years. Don’t worry, TomTom isn’t going nark you out – it’s tracking the data from its Speed Profiles program to help fleet drivers find the fastest routes around the nation. The two years of data collection shows that, overall, Americans tend to drive within the acceptable limits of the law overall, but the average speed of your journey will typically be determined by where you’re driving.

If you want to go really fast, you’re predictably better off in some of the least populated states in the Union. Mississippi has the fastest roads on average, with typical speeds at just over 70 miles per hour, followed by New Mexico. The fastest single interstate is I-15 in Utah and Nevada, with speeds averaging 77.67 mph. That’s pushing the upper limits of the law with a 70 mph speed limit, but luckily for folks out west the top speed hits 80 mph in some areas. But while the west has I-15, the biggest speed winners are in the middle of the country: Mississippi, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Idaho, Alabama and Missouri exceed all exceed an average of 67 mph.

While the country’s midsection has the fastest average speeds, predictably, our more congested cities and states have a far slower pace of traffic. Anyone who has ever driven in Washington D.C. knows that traffic is typically set to crawl, and TomTom’s data shows that the median speed is a pokish 46 mph. Hawaii (53 mph); Delaware (61 mph); Rhode Island (63 mph); and Oregon (63 mph) are the next slowest states. Hit the jump to read over TomTom’s press release, and tell us your favorite interstate for high speed motoring in the post-jump comments.

(For reasons that totally baffle me, the Carnegie Endowment has not posted its announcement yet.)

Be mindful: the due dates, application materials and salary vary from one place to the next, sometimes greatly. (The salary range, for example, runs from the Harvard discount of $20,000 over ten months for a pre-doctoral fellow up to $100,000 over a full year for post-docs at some other institutions. In fairness, academic institutions like Harvard and Stanford do have equity issues that need to be respected.)

  • Californian Urban Parks Are Net Emitters of GHGs

The New York Times’ Dot Earth blog reports on a new study on urban green space from Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union, which contends many urban green spaces emit more greenhouse gases (GHGs) than they absorb. This is due to the high amounts of emissions from lawn irrigation, fertilizer, mowing, and leaf blowing. The study argues: “Turfgrass lawns remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and store it as organic carbon in soil, making them important ‘carbon sinks.’ However, greenhouse gas emissions from fertilizer production, mowing, leaf blowing and other lawn management practices are four times greater than the amount of carbon stored by ornamental grass in parks.”

Claudia Czimczik, a researcher at University of California, Irvine, and a co-author of the study, told Dot Earth: “Lawns weren’t initially invented to store greenhouse gases — they have a lot of other purposes such as recreation. But there is a lot of recent political discussions about lawns as carbon sinks, and if that is the case we need to consider the whole package.”

According to Dot Earth, the researchers looked at four parks in Irvine, including open lawns and athletic fields. Open lawns which use fertilizers emit “heat-trapping nitrous oxide,” which “offsets 10 to 30 percent of the carbon dioxide captured and stored.” Additionally, the fuel used in mowing and leaf-blowing ”releases four times more carbon dioxide than the lawns soak up. Athletic fields fare even worse because they require more maintenance.”

Czimczik said Californian parks may be a special case because park officials maintain their parks year round. More research needs to be conducted on the emissions of green spaces in other regions. She added that push mowers should also be considered.

Dot Earth points to the EPA’s GreenScapes program, which can encourages homeowners to think about land, water, air, and energy use in their lawn maintenance. Unfortunately, the article leaves out the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES), a comprehensive new rating system, which addresses all of these issues (see earlier post).

Read the article and check out the study.

Also, read another recent article in The New York Times on the 2,200-acre FreshKills Park, which will feature native grasses, man-made meadows and wetlands, and, hopefully, will prove to be a carbon sink.  In restoring the local ecosystem, FreshKills Park is successfully bringing back birds.

  • Radon Reflections at the Tools for Schools Symposium

January is National Radon Action Month, or NRAM. Read more about EPA’s radon activities and what others are doing to reduce their radon exposure.

Each year, EPA’s Indoor Environments Division hosts an indoor air quality, or IAQ, symposium in Washington D.C. This year’s 10th IAQ Tools for Schools National Symposium took place January 14 to 16 — during National Radon Action Month. As a scientist for EPA’s Center for Radon and Air Toxics, naturally I was delighted to have the opportunity to present radon information at the symposium.

Workgroup meeting at Indoor Air Quality SymposiumThis year’s symposium featured five school districts with specific IAQ design challenges. Each attendee played an integral role as a design team member, formulating strategies to help a school district improve IAQ management. As I interacted with teams, I discovered IAQ stakeholders in many forms: facilities managers, building technicians, nurses, principals, government and even parents. Despite their different roles, people were passionate for school health and worked together to produce excellent solutions in a short period of time.

Discussions about radon were abundant at the symposium. While sipping my latte, a man started a conversation about radon in his school district. He whispered as if it were a secret, “We build radon prevention right into our new school designs.” My eyes lit up so bright; I think I startled him, or maybe he thought I was going to hug him. The importance of preventing pollutants from entering a building is no secret; think about how vapor barriers, gutters and even window screens keep a number of pollutants safely out of the indoor environment.

I overheard someone say, “How will they know if they don’t test?” I smiled and shook my head vigorously in agreement. Clearly this person had just grasped how important it is to test for radon. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, three children were recognized during the National Radon Poster Contest awards luncheon, and EPA’s Administrator, Lisa P. Jackson, touted the benefits of recognizing radon in school IAQ.

As I reflect on activities at the symposium, it’s clear that radon is certainly at the forefront of school IAQ management. My hope is that symposium attendees will share their reflections on the symposium here or blog about it on radonleaders.org. Please comment, reply and get your story out there.

  • Holy Land Foundation representative arrested in Michigan

United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced today that Mohamad Mustapha Ali Masfaka, a 47-year-old native of Syria, was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection when he attempted to enter the United States from Canada via the Ambassador Bridge.

Mr. Masfaka made his initial appearance in federal court in Detroit on an Indictment charging him with Attempted Naturalization Fraud, False Statements, and Perjury.

Joining in the announcement was Brian Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of Investigations for Ohio and Michigan and Andrew Arena, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Detroit Division.

The Indictment charges Mohamad Masfaka with lying to federal officials about his involvement with the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), an organization that was designated by the U.S. Department of Treasury on December 4, 2001, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

HLF was created in 1988 as a non-profit tax exempt charitable organization purportedly to assist needy individuals in the West Bank and Gaza. In addition to its main office in Richardson, Texas, HLF maintained offices in Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza and in other cities throughout the United States, including Detroit, Michigan.

On Nov. 24, 2008, a federal jury in Dallas, Texas convicted the HLF and five of its employees of 21 charges, including providing millions of dollars in material support to the designated terrorist organization, Hamas.

Masfaka’s Indictment alleges that he was employed by HLF in 1997 and 1998 and ran the HLF operations in the Detroit area to include organizing and participating in fund raising events for the HLF. T

he Indictment charges Masfaka with lying to both the FBI and U.S. immigration officials about his involvement with the HLF while the FBI was investigating that organization on criminal terrorism charges and in an attempt to gain U.S. citizenship.

If convicted, Masfaka faces up to 23 years’ imprisonment and $750,000 in fines.

“The arrest puts in motion the criminal prosecution and the process of removing from the United States an alien with known ties to a Treasury Department Designated Terrorist Organization. This individual went to great lengths to avoid apprehension and will now face justice,” said ICE Special Agent In Charge Brian Moskowitz.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The prosecution is being handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark J. Jebson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth R. Chadwell.

  • General Motors announces it will build electric motors in-house

Over the past century, two of the primary ways that carmakers have been able to distinguish their products is styling and powertrains. While styling has often been outsourced to various design studios, typically only the smallest automakers outsource powertrains. As the industry heads into the era of increasing electrification, the whole concept of the powertrain is evolving.

General Motors has decided that powertrains will remain one of its core competencies whether they are based on internal combustion or transferring electrons. To that end, GM has announced that it will become the first U.S.-based automaker to design, develop and manufacture its own electric motors. GM will invest $246 million on a high volume motor production facility that starts production for 2013.

  • Google Voice Arrives on the iPhone, via the Web

Apple can ban all the apps they want, but that apparently won’t stop Google from giving iPhone customers access to Google Voice. As of this morning, iPhone owners can now point mobile Safari at a Google Voice website to gain access to a much more full-featured version of the telephone replacement service.

A mobile browser-based version of Google Voice already existed, but the new one is much more properly a web app than before, and is aimed squarely at providing a better Voice experience to users of Apple’s iPhone. Apple has staunchly refused to allow Google Voice dedicated apps into the App Store, despite earlier claims that Google’s own app had not been rejected, but was merely undergoing review.

That was in July. At this point, it’s fairly obvious that Apple doesn’t want the service on its device, and it’s looking more and more like AT&T isn’t even behind that particular decision, at least not completely. Apple and Google have been in the process of parting ways for quite some time now, as competition between the two industry leaders grows.

Short of reducing the capabilities of the iPhone’s mobile Safari browser, or actively blocking web-based content on the device, there’s little Apple can do to stop iPhone users from being able to access the new app. The app now shows transcribed calls in your inbox, and allows you to play them back. You can dial using a virtual keypad, and make either voice calls or send SMS that way. Google routes the call through your iPhone’s number first as a local connection, and people receiving the call will see your Google Voice number on their call display. Finally, you’ll receive notifications of new voicemail via SMS, including transcriptions of the calls.

There are a few things that the app cannot do, despite using the fancy magic of HTML5 for greater degrees of interactivity. It can’t pull from your iPhone’s contact list, as the original dedicated app could, but instead it provides contact management through a Google Voice address book that is cloud-based and can be accessed from whatever platform you happen to be using.

To access the new Google Voice web app, point your browser to http://m.google.com/voice. Due to Google Voice not yet being available in Canada, I haven’t been able to run this new web app through its paces yet, so chime in and let us know how it performs. Those of you who are using Voice might already be depending on VoiceCentral’s browser based solution for the iPhone. If so, let us know how the two services compare.

  • Tilda Swinton As Conan O’Brien?

Now here’s something we’d pay to see: Tilda Swinton says she would be thrilled to play Conan O’Brien in a TV movie about the comic’s messy departure from NBC. During Conan’s final appearance as host on The Tonight Show last Friday, the funnyman made a joke saying that if HBO were to make a movie about the late night drama at The Peacock he would “like to be played by Academy Award-winner Tilda Swinton.”

Well MovieLine.com caught up with the actress while she was promoting her new feature I Am Love at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend, and in what will likely be music to Conan’s ears, Tilda is up for the challenge.

“I’ve heard about Conan!” Tilda squealed. “I’m so thrilled. I would just be only too happy. Yes, yes, yes, absolutely.”

  • Spark or Alto?

We are planning to buy a small car. This will be a third car in the family of four. First two are Indigo XL Dicor and Vista TDi.

The intended use of the car:

    1. By my wife to commute to office. (includes 10 kms on highway)
    2. Will be used daily only in rainy season. Otherwise will be taken out very occassionaly for the rest of 8-9 months of year.
    3. Strictly city car. Will be taken out of city if first two cars are not available, which is very rare.
    4. Diesel not realy required considering above usage.

Initially we were thinking of Alto Lxi, but had a look at Spark PS/LS and now in confusion which one to buy. We are more inclined towards Spark now as price difference is not much and it is spacious overall. Particularly after using Tata cars, Alto seems cramped now.

Which will be the smarter buy? Any inputs on Spark? Is any model change/facelift expected?

  • Apple Conference Call: Tablet-free Edition

Well, it was almost free of the tablet. On yesterday’s quarterly earnings conference call, when asked about a new product that might have the impact of the Mac, iPod or iPhone, the response from Apple was that it “wouldn’t want to take away your joy of surprise at our latest creation.” How thoughtful.

Regarding the company itself, the big news was that Apple adopted the new accounting standards. Besides ruining my charts, this means subscription accounting deferred and recognized over 24 months is now up front. Which could mean an end to fees for iPod touch owners upgrading iPhone OS, but probably not, and not much for everyone else. What matters is how Apple products are selling. Sales of the Mac and the iPhone are way up, while sales of the iPod are down a little.

    Macs

According to Cupertino, 3.362 million Macs were sold last quarter, a new record, and one that works out to a 33 percent year-over-year gain and nearly double the 17 percent growth rate of PCs. The new iMac led the way with a 70 percent increase in sales over the same time last year. Unfortunately, Mac Pro sales seem to be suffering. Apple sees the Mac Pro as an “economically challenged area” at present, and the company is “hoping” for, but not projecting, improvement.

    iPhones

As for the iPhone, 8.737 million units were sold, also a new record. AT&T is a “great partner,” Apple said, and offers a “great experience” for the majority of customers, which apparently does not include me. Regarding the App Store, it’s a great success, and the approval process is fine, too. Some 90 percent of apps are approved in two weeks, and the “noise is higher than the reality” about problems. China is the focus of a lot of attention for Apple and the iPhone, with 200,000 units activated as of this year. It’s about “building brand” right now.

    iPods

The bad news is that the “traditional” iPod is in decline. Overall, iPod sales were down 8 percent year over year, to 20.97 million last quarter vs. 22.72 million a year ago. The good news — great, really — is that non-traditional iPod touch sales were up 55 percent year over year. That means the iPod touch and iPhone are probably selling in about equal numbers.

A few additional notes of interest:

    • Nearly 700,000 Macs were sold in 283 Apple Stores and about half of the buyers “never owned a Mac before.”
    • Apple has $39.8 billion in cash, up nearly $6 billion from last quarter.
    • Regarding that cash, Apple usually never comments on why it holds so much. Today, it was said that “nothing is forever.” Crazy Nintendo buyout rumor, anyone?
    • Mac sales for the quarter saw 40 percent growth in Italy, France and Spain, and 100 percent in China
    • “No comment” on the Nokia legal battle.

Finally, as Apple execs said several times, “stay tuned” until Wednesday for the latest “creation,” which will be covered by TheAppleBlog, too.

  • Teaching Geography with Children’s Literature: Where Do I Live?

    where do i live image

In the book , Where Do I Live?,  written by Neil Chesanow and illustrated by Ann Iosa, the reader goes on an adventure that starts in his bedroom and leads into the great universe.   Chesanow expands on the reader’s concept of the world by moving outside of the bedroom to the house to the neighborhood to the state and eventually into outer space.  With the turn of a page, the reader can get a bird’s eye view of the world around him.  I especially like the way Chesanow starts the reader with what he can see everyday, like his bedroom, his house, and his street.  Then Chesanow takes the reader higher to view the neighborhood, city, state, country and world.  Making the connection of each smaller part to the larger world should help kids see how maps and the globe represent real images on Earth.  The words start basic and the pictures are clear.  “You live on a special piece of land.  Do you know what land is?  It’s the stuff you walk on.  It’s the ground.”   New words for kindergarten or 1st grade students might be neighborhood, city, suburb, country, state, continent, solar system, galaxy, and universe.  After taking the reader into outer space, Chesanow guides the reader slowly back to home, making a perfect review of the concepts just introduced.

Curriculum Connections:  This book is ideal for grades K-1st with the introduction of map concepts and vocabulary such as country, state, and continent.  This book shows how each person is part of a neighborhood, city, state, and world all at the same time.

Where Do I Live? can be used to teach VA Standards of Learning:  K.5 , K.4 and parts of 1.4.  The students will be introduced to maps, a round Earth, and land.  Students will see maps representing large land masses and objects from above.  Students will be able to see where they live compared to where people from other states, countries, and continents live.

    Additional Resources

The song Where Do I Live? and other geography songs can be used to reiterate the concepts of maps, regions, and communities that were introduced in the book as well as to teach other map terminology.

For hands on fun, have students try out their own map drawing skills.

There are websites available for printing maps for students to use and for online interactive maps.

As a result, U.S. equities are currently down, with the steel industry taking a big hit.

Weak earnings from United States Steel Corp. (X), which is down over 9% right now, isn’t helping.

  • Toyota Sets 2010 Sales Target: 8.27 Million Cars

Engulfed in an almost global recall effort, Japanese carmaker Toyota seems to be confident the problems it experienced in 2009 will somehow go away and make room for a better 2010. A 6 percent better 2010, as Toyota plans to sell that much over the 2009 sales figure and reach a total of 8.27 million vehicles in the new year (including Daihatsu and Hino). Toyota alone is hoped to sell 7.4 million units.

The increase is expected to be supported by most of Toyota’s markets, with a 7 percent in… (read more)

  • Mr. “Make it Blackra1n” geohot successfully hacks PS3

    Geohot George Hotz

Everyone’s favorite iPhone outlaw, George Hotz (better know as geohot), has been at work mastering another piece of hardware: the PlayStation 3. And so far, Geohot has had quite a bit of success. On his blog, Hotz writes, “I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me.” Now, Geohot is adamant that the hacking is for scientific purposes only, and he is not trying to provide a vector for software piracy; the ultimate goal would be to run home-made code or other operating system software such as Linux on the PS3. Although against piracy, Geohot is looking to post the decryption keys used by Sony so others can assist him in his scientific endeavor. Geohot’s blog is very interesting and, at times, deeply technical. We’ve got a few links queued up for your reading pleasure.
