Eerie heads line Dr. Jonathan Elias’ office. Like a scene from a bad B science fiction flick, skulls and sculptures watch the Egyptologist’s every move.

As director of the Akhmim Mummy Studies Consortium (AMSC), Elias analyzes, scans, and records data to advance knowledge and understanding of ancient Egyptian mummies, particularly from the Akmim region 300 miles south of Cairo on the Nile River’s eastern bank.

One of his most recent projects, the forensic facial reconstruction of a 2000-year-old female Akhmimic mummy named Nefrina, is currently on display at her home in the Reading Public Museum in an exhibition entitled “Nefrina’s World,” in the Ancient Civilizations Gallery through 2011.

  • TechArt reveals 2010 Porsche Panamera tuning package

TechArt today revealed its tuning program for the new 2010 Porsche Panamera S and Panamera 4S, both of which will debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

The package includes the addition of TechArt’s Aerodynamic Kit I, which adds a three part front spoiler with a new front apron, 21-inch TECHART Formula or sporty 22-inch TECHART Formula II light-metal wheels. On the inside, the TechArt Panamera gets two-tone leather finishing in teak and black with decorative stitching, a roof liner in the same colored Alcantara.

TechArt did not announce any power upgrades, but we’re guessing that engineers are still working on those.

    2010 TechArt Panamera:

    Press Release:

    TECHART Trio is completed

January, test ground Malmsheim. Sub-zero temperatures – but the team of TECHART Automobildesign has no trouble with the frostiness. There is too much pleasure for the two super athletes, who have left the production hall in Leonberg for the first time and are ready for a photo shooting.

TECHART has completed its Individualization Program for the Porsche Panamera model range. As of now, sportscar lovers are able to get the Panamera S and the all-wheel-driven Panamera 4S refined according their own vision.

    TECHART in every detail

OE quality in every detail – true to the own brand principle TECHART has developed the Individualization Program for the Panamera model range in its well-known and extraordinary style. Only genuine TECHART individualization reflects the typical TECHART design philosophy – technical and aesthetical, visible and invisible.

The Aerodynamic Kit I presents the four-seater in an elegant and excitingly sporty way. The three part front spoiler discreetly hallmarks the dynamic front apron of the Panamera. At the same time, it reduces effectively the buoyant forces at the front axle and ensures optimal flow of cooling air to the braking system.

The transmission of power to the road is the job of a choice of elegant 21-inch TECHART Formula or sporty 22-inch TECHART Formula II light-metal wheels. For the necessary road holding, TECHART recommends Conti Sport Contact 3 tires or Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires.

Quality and dynamics – in the interior as well as at the exterior

TECHART handcrafted interiors are world famous for an extraordinary level of quality and accuracy. For the Panamera model range, TECHART is presenting exclusive two-color leather finishing in teak and black. Decorative stitching with matching yarn, a roof liner in the same colored Alcantara, details such as interior color-matched roof handles and foot mats with leather edging in the color teak give rise to extensive individualization. The new TECHART precious wood trims are being used for the first time in the Panamera model range. The prized ash veneer with a tactile grain decorates the doors, the dashboard and center console.

Visit TECHART in Hall 2 at the Geneva International Motor Show from the 4th to the 14th of March 2010 and experience genuine TECHART Individualization – without sub-zero temperatures.

  • DEVELOPMENT: Yemen to Lead South in U.N. Negotiations

By Thalif Deen UNITED NATIONS, Jan 25 (IPS) The republic of Yemen, categorised by the United Nations as one of the world's "least developed countries" (LDCs), will lead the largest single coalition of developing nations this year: the 130-member Group of 77 (G77).

A country that hit news headlines recently – following an attempt by a Nigerian student, with links to insurgents in Yemen, to blow up a U.S. airline in midair – Yemen will be the chief negotiator on economic and social issues on the U.N. agenda this year.

At a formal inauguration ceremony last week, the Yemeni Foreign Minister Dr Abubakr Al-Qirbi pledged to lead the developing nations, including China, in upcoming negotiations on several important meetings and conferences in 2010.

These include meetings commemorating the 15th anniversary of two major international conferences held in March 1995: the World Conference on Women in Beijing and the World Social Summit on Development in Copenhagen.

The United Nations is expected to review the implementation of the action plans adopted at the two talk-fests, one on gender empowerment and the other on economic and social progress in developing nations.

At both meetings this year, Yemen will be the key player among developing countries on any follow-up action for the future.

The G77 will also take a collective stand on key issues that will come up at three other conferences this year: the U.N. summit of world leaders on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in September in New York; the 10th conference on the Convention on Biodiversity in Japan in October; and the resumed climate change negotiations in Mexico in November.

Ambassador Vanu Gopala Menon of Singapore told IPS he was confident that "Yemen will do well as G77 chair".

Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saidi, who will head the G77 negotiations, "is a wise man, highly respected, very knowledgeable, extremely experienced and a consensus-builder," he said.

"All of us will be happy to work with him to find constructive solutions to the many issues and challenges on the U.N.'s agenda," Menon said.

Addressing delegates last week, Yemeni Foreign Minister Al-Qirbi said his country is taking over the G77 chairmanship at a time when the world is facing an extremely complex financial, economic and environmental situation.

"In spite of the huge efforts that developing countries have made since 2000, with a view to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, successive world crises over the past few years have eroded the progress they made and made it more difficult for them to achieve these desired goals by the year 2015," he said.

Today, he said, developing countries are faced with the aftermath of the world financial crisis and its repercussions on the world economy.

But they have still not overcome the impact of the food crisis of 2008, the subsequent rise in food prices, the spread of hunger and starvation and the widening poverty margin that now includes more than one billion people.

Al-Qirbi pointed out that the repercussions of the global financial and economic crisis on developing countries have been "catastrophic" due to the collapse of trade, the decline of basic commodity prices, the flight of capital, the increase in lending costs, the imposition of restrictions on Official Development Assistance (ODA) and the sharp reduction in foreign investments.

In many developing countries, particularly the 49 least developed countries (LDCs), these combined factors have led to cutbacks in public and private spending on social services such as health, education and poverty reduction programmes, he added.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told delegates that the G77 and China represent the majority of U.N. member states.

"Your members range from the poorest nations to emerging middle-income countries with growing influence," he said.

"And your concerns," he added, "drive the work of the United Nations on many fronts, but particularly on development, as a means of achieving lasting peace and stability, and advancing human rights."

Ban also said the G77 has "special role" in the global campaign to reach the MDGs, including poverty and hunger alleviation, by the target date of 2015.

He said he plans to issue a report in March with his own assessment of gaps and needs.

The secretary-general also told G77 delegates he expects to appoint a "dynamic leader" for a new U.N. gender entity, and he also sought the cooperation of developing nations to complete negotiations on climate change before the end of this year.

  • How-To: Turbocharge Your Browsing With Greasemonkey

    Greasemonkey Icon

While the debate over Mac versus PC will last for eternity, one of the elements that many “diehard” PC users have thrown at Apple fanboys is the ability to really tweak their experience, through application add-ons and plugins.

Mac users who use Firefox have had a little taste of this with Greasemonkey, a Firefox add-on that allows support for on the fly changes to websites. If you haven’t heard of Greasemonkey, this is a must read for you and if your browser of choice isn’t Firefox, we’ll show you how to install its equivalent, GreaseKit with Safari.

    What Is Greasemonkey?

Greasemonkey is an add-on for browsers that allow users to install “scripts” that are fine tuned to affect how different websites function. For example, if you’re a person who uses MySpace and really hates how the login page is full of ads, you can install a script that adjusts the display of the page when it loads and gives you a cleaner experience.

Cleaning up MySpace is just the beginning; there are scripts for just about everything. If you’re not a fan of the default Gmail web interface, you can use a script that declutters it.

But it’s not just about changing the look and feel of a website; there are scripts that remove content like ads and scripts that add functionality, like a script that lets you add notes to entries in your Netflix queue.

    Installing GreaseKit in Safari

While Greasemonkey is an easy add-on if you use Firefox, you can also use similar add-ons in Safari. For Safari users, begin by downloading SIMBL and install it. Then download GreaseKit and install the bundle file inside to ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins. If this folder doesn’t exist, just add it before dropping the file inside.

Next, relaunch Safari and, provided things worked well, you’ll see a new menu entry for GreaseKit. Now go find some scripts (see below) and click “Install This Script” to copy it into GreaseKit. You’ll see the JavaScript flash on screen and eventually it should be added to your GreaseKit menu.

    GreaseKit

    Getting Scripts

There are a variety of places to find the scripts that integrate with Greasemonkey or GreaseKit. Userscripts.org is perhaps the largest of these and an excellent place to start. I urge caution though as these scripts can become dated when the websites they affect are updated. Also, because you’re not running the scripts in Greasemonkey on Firefox for Windows (where they are usually tested), the add-ons may not function exactly as described. This is likely to happen in Safari if the script is overly complex, requiring additional interfaces to manage it.

Here are the scripts I’ve discussed in this article:

You also might enjoy the Unfriend Finder for Facebook that lets you know when (and who) has unfriended you. This particular script doesn’t work well in Safari, so I recommend using it in Firefox.

Have you found any good scripts? Feel free to use the comments below and let us know what you think.

  • App Review: Newton Lite

Newton is the sniper to Asteroids spray and pray. According to the developer, a lone coder named Mario from Graz, Austria, Newton is a physics puzzler heavily inspired by the great flash game Gravity Pods and some old DOS and Amiga classics with similar game play mechanics.

The point of the game is simple: you have a gun and you have to shoot the target. There are currently 21 levels which use pushers, pullers, and obstacles to show off a great physics engine. Though there are not very many levels yet, the last few are pretty tricky and may take a nice chunk of time to complete.

The graphics in the game are basic but look great, and run smoothly. The game play is very intriguing to me. I can’t wait to see where the developer takes it. I’ve had a chance to test the level editor, it is almost ready to go live. I can’t wait to see whats up next for this game.

As I was sitting down to write this review, I noticed an update to Newton Lite already up on the market. Turns out 3-D graphics were added. They have since been made optional. It is great to see the developer for this game churning out the updates quick. If he continues to add content to the game, it may quickly become one of my favorite go-to games for killing a few moments here and there.

I’ve spoken with the developer about his plans for Newton. The level editor is almost completed. Next up is online high score tracking. Check out This Community Page it is a thread by the developer with the dialog between him and the testers providing feedback. Feel free to post thoughts or ideas if you have them. He was also quick to respond via email if you’ve got questions or ideas. He has also written a tutorial on Android game programing. It’s written in German, but he is working on translation to English; it should be done soon.

This App Was Tested Using: T-Mobile myTouch 3G
Presentation: Very basic, but it looks nice.
Value: Free, but limited content at this time.
Stability/Resources: Everything is pretty smooth. I noticed minor lag on the bullet trail a few times. But overall it runs great.
Bottom Line: Interesting game, lots of potential if the dev keeps up with it.

  • Wardrobe Wish List: Free People Lace Bandeau

For people like me (a girl with a huge vision for her wardrobe and a very tiny bank account to work with), little-somethings to update an outfit are crucial.

It’s all about a low cost addition that has the ability to make a big impact. Maybe it’s a chain link necklace from a street vendor, a cheap but oh-so-modern neck scarf from Forever 21, or a hand-me-down that adds a new flavor to a tired outfit. When I stumble across one of these little gems, let’s just say I jump on it faster than I would Brad Pitt if we were given five minutes alone.

And alas I have stumble (and jumped on) Free people’s Lace Bandeau. It could fit inside my pocket, but packs some major punch.

The bandeau is seamlessly adorable. From the ruching at the bust to the eyelet floral lace overlay, it’s equal parts girlish ingénue and flirty femme fatale.  There’s just something so sweetly sinister about the lace peeking out from underneath a loose tank or layered under a zipped up hoodie and a distressed jean jacket.

Beyond its endearing nature, the bandeau is just plain practical. How many times have we all put on a shirt only to realize that you could totally see our bra right through it? We’re going to class, not to hang out the corner and turn some tricks. So, we add a tank top underneath and then spend the rest of the day pulling it down as it rides up and silently pouting that we are adding 5 pounds to our stomachs with the bulkiness of the double layer.

The bandeau is the solution to all of our problems! Unlike our bras, it is socially acceptable to see the sweet lace peeking out from our button down cardigan or t-shirt, but we don’t have to worry about it moving all over the place or adding unneeded bulk down below. Plus, if you happen to have a last minute booty call arise (lucky you), you have instant sexy lingerie. (Note: the cute lacy underwear that ride up your butt are a nice addition. Yeah, I’m going for sexy not comfortable).

Plus it comes in eight colors, from the subdued black and taupe that are totally work appropriate to some punchy additions like neon pink, neon yellow and turquoise that will have anyone dreaming of lounging on the beach, frozen cocktail in hand.

  • 2-liter research-scale High Pressure Processing system for food processing R&D

Food manufacturers are increasingly evaluating the potential of ultra-high pressure for the pasteurization of packaged foods and the development of new products and preparation methods. Nearly two decades of research has proven High Pressure Processing (HPP) to be effective in preserving a food’s natural flavor, nutrients and appearance without heat or chemicals and little or no change in organoleptic properties. HPP inactivates food-borne pathogens and spoilage agents, resulting in a safer product and an extension of microbiological shelf life.

To meet the research and feasibility testing needs of processors, universities and R&D labs, Avure Technologies offers the QFP 2L Laboratory Food Processing System. It is a compact yet highly functional unit that closely replicates a high-volume production environment. The water pressure medium in the two-liter vessel can be pressurized up to 100,000 psi (690 MPa, 6900 bar), with temperature control from 10º to 90°C. This broad processing range allows for both microbiological and food functionality studies where the effects of direct and adiabatic heating can be evaluated. Results obtained are directly scalable to all of Avure’s larger commercial food processing systems.

The QFP 2L features precise computer control of the full range of pressure and temperature parameters, with data acquisition for test cycle analysis and comparisons. Safety is enhanced with “leak-before-break” pressure vessel technology and threadless end closures. The complete system is available at an affordable price, a justifiable investment for most food R&D activities.

Usually Sony does not show off everything that the company has in store for 2010 at CES and a few gems are always saved to be revealed later on. So don’t get discouraged if you have not found anything compelling from dozens of new goodies Sony showed off at CES this year.

Meanwhile, one of them is the unannounced VAIO M Series notebook, yup I don’t think we have seen that letter designation being used yet in VAIO notebook line (VAIO desktops did have M series though, funky looking all in one PC pictured here). The model numbers to look for are:

  • Vans, small trucks deliver supplies to snowed-in Big Bear [Updated]

Authorities lifted a ban this morning on small delivery vehicles on Highway 18 into Lake Arrowhead, Crestline and Twin Peaks to get supplies to the snowed-in mountains, said Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga.

But larger supply trucks hauling trailers remained restricted from the roadways into Big Bear Valley for safety reasons, California Highway Patrol officials said.

“The problem is there’s so much snow — there’s only so much place you can put the snow,” said CHP Sgt. Sal Suarez. “We can’t get big rigs and buses to be traveling along with vehicles in the other direction, otherwise it’ll clog up.”

Suarez said smaller, two-axle trucks with no trailers were compact enough to pass up the mountain. “Once we have the roadway conditions prepared, most likely we can open it up for all vehicles,” he said.

Caltrans and CHP officials plan to reassess the situation at noon. [Updated at 1:56 p.m.: After a noon meeting, authorities are allowing large supply trucks to carry food, fuel and other essentials up Highway 38 into Big Bear, Kasinga said.

"Big Bear is replenished," Kasinga said. "They’re saying they can handle the public right now."]

Routes into Big Bear were closed Sunday because of impassable roads and tough weather conditions.

  • Sorry, John Boehner: Massachusetts Voters Still Hate the GOP

    250px-John_Boehner_official_portraitWishful thinking, Tanman.

There’s not a seat in America held by a Democrat that can’t be won. Massachusetts proves that,” Boehner said this morning during an interview on Fox News. […] “I handed Nancy Pelosi the gavel the past two congresses, I think it’s time for her to hand me the gavel,” he said.

Mmm-hmmm. Because Massachusetts, like the rest of the country, just can’t wait to turn the country back over to the GOP.

GOP policies prove even less popular [than the Obama administration’s], with 58 percent of Massachusetts voters saying they are dissatisfied or angry about what Republicans in Congress are offering.

Ouch. But surely MA was a referendum on Obama, right?

Obama also remains popular in Massachusetts. More than six in 10 of those who voted approve of his job performance, with 92 percent of Coakley’s voters expressing satisfaction, along with 33 percent of Brown’s. More than half of Brown’s backers say Obama was not a factor in their vote.

Scott Brown won because the economy sucks and Democratic voters weren’t motivated to vote, for a variety of reasons.

And despite Tanman’s daydreaming about holding Pelosi’s gavel, there is no evidence that Brown’s election indicates Americans are clamoring for the Tanman to return as Speaker of the House, any time soon.

SEAT Ibiza FR TDI – Click above for high-res image gallery

Once upon a time, “diesel” was a codeword for slow. And slow as they were, there was no way of getting around that. But things are different today, thanks in no small part to the diesel gurus in the Volkswagen group, arguably chief among them SEAT.

The Spanish automaker recently bowed out of the World Touring Car Championship after winning two seasons in a row with its Leon TDI. But that doesn’t mean SEAT’s giving up on the idea of the fast diesel, and to that end has just announced its latest oil-burning hot hatch.

The Ibiza FR TDI mirrors its gasoline counterpart, but packs a turbodiesel punch. With its 141-horsepower force-fed four, the Ibiza FR TDI hits 60 in 8.2 seconds and tops out at 130 miles per hour, all the while returning 62.7 mpg on the European combined cycle and emitting just 119 g/km of CO2. The power’s kept in check with SEAT’s trick XDS electronic differential and electronic stability control, available with three doors or five. Details in the press release after the jump, photos in the gallery below.

  • The Baltic Dry Index Is About To Be Crushed Once Again

The dry bulk shipping vessel orderbook is so massive over the next two years that even huge cancellation estimates would have trouble making it manageable, and thus saving the Baltic Dry Index (a measure of spot rates for bulk shipping).

FTAlphaville highlights that broker Icap expects 1,400 vessels to be delivered in 2010, which equates to 120 vessels per month on average. (Even if in reality they won't be spread out evenly) How bad is 120 ships per month relative to what the market has had to deal with so far?

At no point during 2009 did the rate of delivery exceed 60 vessels in one month – but even if this rate of delivery were maintained throughout 2010 it would still equate to slippage of around 50 per cent. However, in light of the sheer size of the orderbook, and despite high levels of slippage, the market still faces the prospect of continued tonnage growth.

This doesn't mean every dry bulk company is toast, but it does mean that the Baltic Dry Index's strength can't be sustained forever, especially with China beginning to tighten its monetary policy and restrict economic growth. (China, as half of global steel demand, is the major driver for bulk shipping rates).

If a shipping stock makes sense after plugging-in half the rates it earns today, then it could be a decent value, but if it requires current rates to be sustained then it's a highly speculative bet going forward, where the odds are stacked against you. You can visualize the stacked odds via the stacked bars of ship deliveries below:
