  • Boeing awarded long-term support contract for Australia’s Wedgetail 737 AEW&C program

The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today announced that it has been awarded a five-year In-Service Support contract for Project Wedgetail, Australia’s 737 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) program.

The contract from Australia’s Defence Materiel Organisation is worth approximately US$600 million.

Under the performance-based logistics (PBL) contract, Boeing will provide acquisition, program management, integration and engineering services.

Boeing Defence Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, will support the program with engineering, maintenance and training services and supply chain management for the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) fleet of six Wedgetail AEW&C aircraft and ground segments.

Northrop Grumman, as a subcontractor on the Boeing-led program, will support the aircraft’s Multirole Electronically Scanned Array radar.

The contract is expected to create more than 100 jobs in Newcastle, Australia, while providing continued and new employment for more than 100 personnel in Queensland, Australia.

This PBL agreement offers the RAAF maximum aircraft readiness at the lowest possible cost. Boeing is the industry leader in PBL contract execution.

“Establishing a robust support program for the Wedgetail aircraft will help ensure the long-term success of the AEW&C system,” said Maureen Dougherty, AEW&C vice president for Boeing.

“We are offering an enterprisewide solution by tapping into the support infrastructure expertise of Boeing Commercial Airplanes and pairing that with Boeing Defense, Space & Security’s extensive work with large sustainment defense contracts, technical know-how and experience with airborne surveillance and battle management systems.”

Project Wedgetail consists of six 737 AEW&C aircraft and associated ground support segments, such as the Operational Flight Trainer, Operational Mission Simulator and Mission Support System.

All of these program elements are located in the AEW&C Support Centre at RAAF Base Williamtown in Newcastle.

Boeing delivered the first two Wedgetail aircraft to the RAAF on Nov. 26, which allowed its flight, mission and maintenance crews to begin familiarization training.

Based on the Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 commercial airplane, the 737 AEW&C aircraft is designed to provide airborne battle-management capability with an advanced multirole electronically scanned radar and 10 state-of-the-art mission crew consoles that are able to track airborne and maritime targets simultaneously. The mission crew can direct offensive and defensive forces while maintaining continuous surveillance of the operational area.

Boeing also has AEW&C systems in production for Turkey and the Republic of Korea.

  • Decline of the Desktop Mac

Strolling the mall with my wife, I was looking for an excuse to visit the Apple Store, but instead I found a reason: the disappearing desktop.

“Where have all the desktops gone?” I asked her pointedly.

She looked inside the glass front and pointed. “They’re right there.”

“Well, yeah, but why are there so few? I need to investigate.”

    She sighed. “Don’t buy anything.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” I replied. “This is work. Anyway, no one in the know buys anything right before an Apple event.”

    Well, not usually.

Inside, a quick count of Macs tallied just thirteen desktops, ten iMacs, two Mac minis, and a single Mac Pro. That contrasted with 36 Mac laptops.

If that disparity surprises, it shouldn’t. A look at a few other numbers tells the tale of the respective rise and fall of Mac laptops and desktops, and maybe what it means to you.

I asked a nice person in a brightly-colored shirt about the dearth of desktops, but he didn’t know anything, not even that there was a brightly-colored Apple event imminent. The invitations were privately sent out from far above the local Apple Store, and thus could not even be officially acknowledged below. That might explain from whence the store layout came.

Luckily, Apple must still divulge at least some information to the public, like Macs sold. Over the last decade laptop sales have been waxing, desktops not quite waning. While it is true desktop sales have seen some growth since the nadir in 2004, desktops have yet to match the sales record set in 2000. While that’s not exactly the end of the world, looking at models in percentage terms of Macs sold does seem a little more apocalypsish.

Those trend lines are no friend of the Mac desktop. For 2009, seven out of ten Macs sold were laptops, and in 2010 that ratio will likely rise to three out of four. While this may explain the single table of iMacs in the back of my local Apple Store, the question now becomes: is the Mac desktop doomed?

Steve Jobs once described Apple’s business model as an uncomfortable piece of furniture, a three-legged stool. What he was getting at is where the money comes from: Macs, iPods and the iTunes Store, and the iPhone.

This is Apple’s business model without the awkward furniture metaphor. Looking forward into 2010, the iPhone is surging, pulling along the iTunes Store, the iPod flattening out, and Macs are holding their own, or rather laptops are. In 2010, the desktop Mac will likely account for just a tenth of Apple’s net sales.

However, it’s important to remember Apple is a company that makes things, four major hardware product types, maybe five soon, but four now.

In 2009, desktop Macs, which include the Xserve, Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac mini had net sales of $4.3 billion on 3.18 million units. That works out to about $1,350 per desktop, and compares favorably with laptops at $9.47 billion in sales on 7.2 million units, around $1315 per laptop. There is no chance Apple is going to take that kind of money off the desktop anytime soon, but an increasingly portable world will continue to have consequences for desktop users.

I was there at Macworld Expo 2005 when the Mac mini was introduced, and five years later it looks pretty much the same, even the new server model sans optical drive. From the outside, the Mac Pro of 2010 looks a lot like the PowerMac G5 of 2003, even though one could arguably create a lighter, more portable mid-tower case with Intel inside. Not going to happen.

While internal changes are required, external redesign of Apple’s desktops would require R&D better spent on, say, a tablet. To that end, only Apple’s flagship desktop, the iMac, has seen, and will likely see, further refinement. From polycarbonate to aluminum and glass, to maybe a dock/slot for a tablet, the iMac has effectively become the desktop Mac.

If you are the Panera Bread iMac Man, you probably won’t notice, but for the rest of us desktop Mac users the future will pretty much look like the past.

  • California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP) Transition Plan to FCVs

In August, 2008 I had talked about the California Fuel Cell Partnership or CaFCP Vision Plan for rolling out fuel cell vehicles in California. At that time the goal was to have 25,000 to 50,000 FCVs on the road by the 2015 to 2017 timeframe.

Then in March 2009, I had talked about the CaFCP Action Plan which redefined the Vision Plan a bit with more specific details such as setting up clusters of hydrogen cars and stations in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.

Now, the CaFCP Transition Plan is unfolding, which is a movement from the Action Plan demonstration phase to commercialization phase for hydrogen cars and fueling stations. The CaFCP Transition Plan takes into account not only Los Angeles and San Francisco but Sacramento as well.

Sacramento is important, being the Capital of California as codes and standards will need to be developed in regard to both H2 cars and hydrogen fueling stations in preparation for commercialization.

According to the new estimates, the California Fuel Cell Partnership is looking to have 49,600 FCVs on the road by 2015 – 2017. Most of these vehicles will be in the Southern California area (the region with the most hydrogen fueling stations) in the cities of Torrance, Newport Beach, Irvine and Santa Monica.

The focus in Northern California, in the San Francisco area calls for up to 60 fuel cell buses by 2014 and up to 700 cars. This mixture of large and small FCVs will mean that mixed us H2 fueling stations will need to be built to accommodate both.

The centerpiece for the transition plan is the building of the hydrogen fueling stations. What CaFCP has learned is that if six to eight fueling stations are built at one time, then economies of scale kick in, driving down the costs significantly.

  • South Korea Plans Giant Eco Dome [Architecture]

The Ecorium Project, South Korea’s planned nature reserve, is a stunner. The 33,000 sq. meter park includes a wetland reserve, a wild plant area, and maybe—just maybe—two dudes and their hilarious hijinks.

The structure will comprise a series of connected domes, each of which contains its own greenhouse.

Sponsored by the National Ecological Institute of South Korea and designed by Samoo, the Ecorium Project is going to be as much an educational center as it is a preserve. It’ll also be energy-efficient itself, with each greenhouse being capable of detecting external climate conditions and making the appropriate adjustments inside. The exterior will be made of metal panels, low-iron and low-e double glazing, wood and plexiglass.

While there’s no word on when it will be completed—or started, for that matter—it’s great to see a project like this moving past the concept phase and into development. [World Architecture News via Inhabitat]

  • Miller High Life Goes Big for the ‘Little Guys’

The Brand known for Common Sense Takes a Stand against Fancy Pants Commercials; Gives “Big Game” TV Ad to Deserving Small Businesses

Miller High Life, the beer that surprised America last year with its one-second ad, will once again call a time-out for common sense during the Big Game – this year giving air-time to four deserving small businesses from around the country.

The 30-second spot will feature the owners of Del’s Barber Shop in Escondido, Calif., Tim’s Baseball Card Shop in Chicago, Ill., Loretta’s Authentic Pralines in New Orleans, La., Bizarre Guitar & Drum in Phoenix, Ariz. as well as Miller High Life’s very own no-nonsense deliveryman.

It will air in major markets during the Big Game on Feb. 7, 2010.

“Miller High Life is all about common sense and nothing makes more sense than giving deserving small businesses the opportunity to be a part of the Big Game,” said Miller High Life Brand Manager Joe Abegg. “These businesses live the High Life everyday by retaining a steadfast commitment to service and authenticity.

What better way to show our appreciation for hard-working Americans who share High Life’s values than by providing a primetime stage for a few to tell their story?”

Miller High Life scoured the country to identify potential businesses to be featured in the Big Game commercial.  From the many qualified companies that stood out, the folks at Miller High Life had the difficult task of narrowing it down to a few small businesses from around the country.

“We had a lot of fun working with the owners of these companies and we think they represent small businesses across the country very well,” said Abegg. “We hope this experience has been as positive for them as it has for us and that it only serves to help small businesses thrive.”

To build excitement for the commercial, which will air across much of the country through buys with local market CBS affiliates and owned-and-operated stations, a 30-second teaser ad will hit the air beginning this week.

Additional content, including outtakes from the Big Game commercial shoot and information on the four businesses featured in the ad as well as others that are living the High Life, will be available online at MillerHighLife.com.

The commercial was created by Saatchi & Saatchi, New York.
