The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today announced that it has been awarded a five-year In-Service Support contract for Project Wedgetail, Australia’s 737 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) program.
The contract from Australia’s Defence Materiel Organisation is worth approximately US$600 million.
Under the performance-based logistics (PBL) contract, Boeing will provide acquisition, program management, integration and engineering services.
Boeing Defence Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, will support the program with engineering, maintenance and training services and supply chain management for the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) fleet of six Wedgetail AEW&C aircraft and ground segments.
Northrop Grumman, as a subcontractor on the Boeing-led program, will support the aircraft’s Multirole Electronically Scanned Array radar.
The contract is expected to create more than 100 jobs in Newcastle, Australia, while providing continued and new employment for more than 100 personnel in Queensland, Australia.
This PBL agreement offers the RAAF maximum aircraft readiness at the lowest possible cost. Boeing is the industry leader in PBL contract execution.
“Establishing a robust support program for the Wedgetail aircraft will help ensure the long-term success of the AEW&C system,” said Maureen Dougherty, AEW&C vice president for Boeing.
“We are offering an enterprisewide solution by tapping into the support infrastructure expertise of Boeing Commercial Airplanes and pairing that with Boeing Defense, Space & Security’s extensive work with large sustainment defense contracts, technical know-how and experience with airborne surveillance and battle management systems.”
Project Wedgetail consists of six 737 AEW&C aircraft and associated ground support segments, such as the Operational Flight Trainer, Operational Mission Simulator and Mission Support System.
All of these program elements are located in the AEW&C Support Centre at RAAF Base Williamtown in Newcastle.
Boeing delivered the first two Wedgetail aircraft to the RAAF on Nov. 26, which allowed its flight, mission and maintenance crews to begin familiarization training.
Based on the Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 commercial airplane, the 737 AEW&C aircraft is designed to provide airborne battle-management capability with an advanced multirole electronically scanned radar and 10 state-of-the-art mission crew consoles that are able to track airborne and maritime targets simultaneously. The mission crew can direct offensive and defensive forces while maintaining continuous surveillance of the operational area.
Boeing also has AEW&C systems in production for Turkey and the Republic of Korea.

Email has been around longer than the World Wide Web, yet doesn’t show any sign of slowing down or becoming obsolete despite the number of people proclaiming its end days and the number of technologies labeled as email-killers, Google Wave for one. In fact, by all accounts, email usage is going up, the only problem is that most of it is useless spam. I… (

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has recently elected Jafar Saniie, an electrical and computer engineering faculty member at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), to its class of 2010 Fellows for his contributions to ultrasonic signal processing for detection, estimation, and imaging.
Here is the new Peugeot 408, a new model which was launched in China but is supposed to be released in several international markets, as the parent manufacturer said in a release. The car was designed in France but will be manufactured in China at Wuhan. The first units are due to go on sale in China in spring 2010, before the official launch in Latin America.
The Formula One teams are really decided to bring a dramatic change in the current point-awarding system in the series, especially with the boost in cars on the 2010 starting grid. As 6 more cars will eventually make the field in the upcoming season, there is also the need to award points to more race finishers consequently.
A point of interest for commercial producers and racing drivers only, the Bonneville Speedway has been the venue for numerous land speed records for nearly one century. The following description is probably the best translation into words of what the Bonnevile Salt Flats stand for: Imagine a place so flat you seem to see the curvature of the planet, so barren not even the simplest life forms can exist. Imagine the passing thunder of strange vehicles hurtling by on a vast dazzling white plain. T… (
Employees of the PSA Peugeot Citroen Group have another reason to smile, as the French car manufacturer announced the negotiations with its workforce are over and that they agreed to a pay rise of 1.9%. It might not seem like a lot, but still it is something, considering the recession and the fact that the French price inflation for the past year was estimated at 0.8%.
…Statistically, every North American Auto Show has always been the venue where every US manufacturer is making its best peacock impressions in front of its competitors. Why? Well, it would be hard not to. I mean, whether it’s good ole GM, Chrysler or Ford, each one of them is on ‘merican soil when participating at NAIAS, right? So, from the "home turf" point of view alone they should be making double damage.
Miller High Life, the beer that surprised America last year with its one-second ad, will once again call a time-out for common sense during the Big Game – this year giving air-time to four deserving small businesses from around the country.
Even if this might not sound like a newsworthy subject, it actually is because every single Rolls Royce dealership – although it sells one or maybe two cars per year – contributes to the final sales figures of the year for the British luxury car manufacturer, which in most cases does not exceed the 5 units per year milestone in certain countries.
