  • The MacView: An incredibly well-done concept tablet

Here at TUAW, we’ve been treated to so many concept drawings and fake photoshopped tablets over the past several months that we’ve become somewhat jaded about them. However, Polish designer Patrycjucz Brzezinski’s concept for an Apple tablet, named the MacView, is so well done that it deserves mention. The MacView was developed as a diploma project for Brzezinski, and if the work shown on various Web sites is any indication, he may go far in his career as a designer.

The concept of the MacView is different: rather than a single slab of aluminum and glass that looks like a large iPhone, Brzezinski has a “slider” design made out of carbon fiber materials. The MacView can be used as simply a tablet, or the slider section — which is also a display — can turn into a nook-like sub-display showing a Cover Flow view of files or songs, or into a full-sized virtual keyboard when pulled out a bit further.

Brzezinski’s vision doesn’t stop at the design of the device. He’s also created an iMac-like dock for the MacView into which the device can be placed to turn it into a full desktop machine. He even designed packaging for the MacView.

    The Pineapple Blog
has many of the concept drawings with English translations, and you can see the full portfolio over at The Behance Network.

Thanks to Wojtek for the tip!

  • DIY: Wireless door access using a watch

The TI Chronos has been a bit of a hackers darling recently, but this has to be the coolest application of it I’ve seen so far. Rather then getting an RFID tag embedded in your hand, program your watch to use a pre-programmed combination of taps to activate the wireless door locking system.

The inventor created this locking system using the TI development kit, some basic electronics, and the Chronos watch. The watch uses a 128 bit AES key encryption, and requires that you know the pre-programmed tap code before it will open the door. This is more secure then RFID, which just opens based on proximity. I love this project, the only potential issue I could see would be someone mugging you and stealing your watch, leaving you unable to open your door (unless you have a key with you).

  • The Joe Mauer dilemma

    http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__23/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-183956305-1264207205.jpg?ymll9jCDdhKW5fwD

Joe Mauer(notes) is about to get a ludicrously large payday – presumably in the $20 million per year range – but that fact really isn’t meaningful for any of us in the fantasy community (unless you’re actively trying to sell him something). Here, we care primarily about the imaginary payday Mauer is about to receive.

If your intention is to purchase his services in 2010, then you’ll need to commit a substantial percentage of your budget. In the Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide we set Mauer’s mixed league suggested retail price at $42. That number is probably insane, yet surprisingly easy to justify. Mauer enhanced his Hall of Fame resume with several bullet-points last year – MVP award (his first), Gold Glove (second), batting title (third), Silver Slugger (third) – while massively out-producing the standard-issue fantasy catcher. He led all players at his position in runs (94), homers (28) and, obviously, batting average (.365).

At the risk of appearing too self-referential, we’ll briefly direct your attention back to this feature from last season, in which we discussed expected performance from each fantasy roster position based on the prior year’s data. In 2008, the top 15 catchers averaged 56 runs scored, 14 home runs, 64 RBIs and two stolen bases while collectively hitting .265. Those were the most useful players at the position according to end-of-season Yahoo! ranks. In 2009, Mauer exceeded those totals by 38 runs, 14 homers, 32 RBIs, two steals and 100 points of batting average. For comparison’s sake, Albert Pujols(notes) exceeded the average ’08 performance of the ownable first basemen by 34 runs, 17 homers, 28 RBIs, 12 steals and 40 points of batting average.

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__24/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-260482912-1264377872.jpg?ymQQnkCDahu3THEWSo the magnitude of the difference between Mauer and the typical starting fantasy catcher was enormous. It was Pujolsian. If you expect Mauer to perfectly reproduce his 2009 stats in 2010, then there’s really no dilemma at all. You should slot him somewhere near the top of your overall ranks, then move along to other subjects.

The reason a Mauer dilemma exists for the rest of us, however, is that we’re not prepping for last year’s league. Instead, we’re preparing for 2010. Mauer is entering his magical age-27 season, but he’s also coming off a campaign in which he established career highs in hits, homers, RBIs, average, OBP and slugging percentage. It’s irrational to expect improvement in 2010. Those selecting Mauer at his current Mock Draft Central ADP (13.9) are clearly expecting him to remain healthy and to hold last year’s gains, with only modest regression. Anyone bidding $42 is expecting the same.

But despite having been an upper-tier catcher over multiple seasons, Mauer had never delivered first-round value until 2009. Few catchers ever have. In the fantasy era, it’s basically just Piazza and Pudge. (Javy Lopez(notes) gave it a run in 2003). Catching is the most physically stressful everyday role in baseball, and anyone playing the position should be considered an injury risk. Mauer himself has spent 60 days on the DL over the past three seasons. Historically, catcher is just a terrible place to park auction dollars, and it’s a risky place to spend early picks. Scroll through the past decade of player ratings at Baseball Monster and add up all the catchers who’ve delivered first or second-round stats; it won’t take you long. The position does not typically return a profit – even a small profit – at the high end.

(Bonus reading: There’s a short essay called "Drafting Catchers" in the 2010 Baseball Forecaster that offers additional supporting evidence. We won’t quote it because they don’t give away the product, but you’re encouraged to pick up the book).

Another concern with Mauer is the likelihood that he’ll retain last season’s power. He reached an entirely new home run plateau last season, more than doubling his previous career high. From 2005 to 2008, Mauer only reached double-digit homers once. None of his batted-ball rates changed significantly last year – he continued to be a groundball/line-drive machine (47.8 GB percentage, 22.6 LD) – but suddenly 20.4 percent of his flyballs cleared the fence. Oddly enough, 16 of Mauer’s 28 homers were opposite-field shots. That’s not a bad thing – they all count – though it’s hardly traditional.

Scouts have always projected a home run spike from Mauer, so it’s not as if the binge of ’09 came without warning. His career HR/FB rate was only 8.9 percent entering the season, however, yet he finished 11th overall in HR/FB last year, just behind Adam Dunn(notes) (21.1) and ahead of Pujols (20.1). If Mauer is going to settle into their power-hitting tier – and this, of course, is key to the preservation of his ’09 fantasy value – then he’ll need to remain a curious slugging outlier.

For obvious reasons, you don’t find many groundball/line-drive types among the home run leaders. Of the 20 qualifying players who posted HR/FB rates above 18.0 percent in 2009, Mauer had by far the lowest flyball percentage (29.5). He didn’t put the ball in the air particularly often, but when he did, it left the park. That’s a tricky habit to maintain. Mauer has already established himself among the best hitting catchers of all time, though, so we can’t dismiss the possibility that he’ll continue to be an exception to various rules. But if he were any other player, you’d say his homer total was much more likely to fall to 15 than surge to 30.

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__24/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-940220343-1264361705.jpg?ympTjkCD4QPdT4ISThe most important variable affecting Mauer’s performance in 2010 is the one about which we know the least: Target Field, the Twins’ new home park.

The temperature-controlled Metrodome was the eighth most homer-friendly stadium in baseball in 2009. Target Field is an outdoor venue, and Minneapolis itself is definitely not temperature-controlled. This is no small concern. Minnesota’s home opener will be held on April 12, when the average high is 55 degrees and the average low is 35. There are going to be a few uncomfortable days (and some viciously uncomfortable nights) in the new stadium.

Let’s not simply write the place off as a pitcher’s park, however. If you’ll please review these stadium diagrams, you’ll notice that Target’s dimensions appear to be cozy when compared to the Metrodome, and there’s very little foul territory. Without knowing a thing about the wind patterns or field conditions, you’d have to say that the place is at least shaped like a hitter-friendly park. Target Field opens at the south end in right field (pictured), and the prevailing direction of the breeze could either assist or doom left-handed power.

Minnesota’s front office likely knows something about how the new stadium will play, and the reported pursuit of Jim Thome perhaps suggests that Target Field will accommodate lefty sluggers well. The Twins have no interest in catering to fantasy owners, though, so we’ll have to wait for data to accumulate before judging the park. And again, Mauer was an opposite-field monster last year. If there’s any significant right-field wind effect at Target, it won’t impact Mauer in the same way that it will impact, say, Justin Morneau(notes)

Still, given the position, power and park-related uncertainty surrounding Mauer, it’s impossible for many of us to endorse a $35+ bid. We’ll pass. He’s all yours. Scarcity enthusiasts are everywhere, so someone will drive up the price in most leagues (even though they can save a few fake dollars and acquire McCann, or invest in a reclamation project like Soto). In snake-drafts, Mauer will go near the turn at the end of the first round, alongside Longoria, Lincecum, Crawford, Wright and Kinsler. If that feels right to you, let’s see a spirited defense in comments.

There’s no need to settle the Mauer debate now, in January. We’ve got time to rank and re-rank. Don’t feel that you have to commit to anything, though you’re free to share your preliminary position below.

  • 2 dead after Chicago-area van hit by truck in Indiana

Two people in an extended family returning to the Chicago area from a Georgia kite-flying convention died when a tractor-trailer hit their full size passenger van on an Indiana interstate, police said.

In addition to killing the two people, the crash injured 16 people in the van and the driver of the truck.

It happened about 3:30 a.m. near the town of Edinburgh, about 30 miles southeast of Indianapolis, Shelby County, Indiana, police said.

Weather appeared to be a factor in the crash, but investigators were still trying to determine what role it played in the crash.

The van was returning to the Chicago area from an event in the Atlanta area, carrying a family that included both children and adults, according to Shelby County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Travis A. Maloney. Some of those injured in the van received only scratches, while others were seriously injured, he said in an e-mail.

Both the van, a 2010 full size Chevrolet passenger van, and the truck, a blue 2007 Freightliner, were headed north on Interstate 65 when the van tried to pull onto the shoulder, witnesses told police. A witness told police the blue truck was weaving on the road just before the crash. The truck appears to have struck the van from the rear and forced it from the roadway, causing it to turn over, according to evidence police gathered at the scene.

A motorist called 911 about 3:30 a.m. and told the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department about the crash, Maloney said in a press release.

Two people in the van were declared dead on the scene, and the other 16 were taken to three area hospitals, Maloney said. The truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Blood samples were taken from both drivers following the crash and sent to the Indiana State Department of Toxicology, according to Maloney.

No further information on the victims was being released early this afternoon, Maloney said in an e-mail.

  • Report: GM/Spyker near agreement, Spyker chairman to step down?

Could the Saab endgame – no, the real endgame this time – finally be under way? Bloomberg is reporting that financial terms have been agreed to, in principle, between General Motors and Spyker, and that what remains between the two are sorting out production issues. Beyond that, there are still a couple of catches: Vladimir Antonov, Spyker’s Russian backer and company chairman, will reportedly have to leave the company and the Swedish government must agree to guarantee the €400 million ($500 million U.S.) loan from the European Investment Bank.

The money deal is that Spyker gives GM $75 million, GM keeps another $100 million in current Saab liquidity, and The General receives $325 million in preferred shares from the new, Spyker-owned Saab company. That last deal would keep GM in the Saab game, which is perhaps an issue of technology made feasible by Antonov’s departure.

The two companies continue to work on the deal in Stockholm. In the meantime, Saab engineers can go on prepping that 9-5 Sport Combi, and if Spyker pulls this off, it will have proved its “Nulla tenaci invia est viamotto and then some.

  • Bungie: “Halo: Reach for Us is Not Halo 4”

Halo: Reach, Bungie’s upcoming new entry in the mega franchise, doesn’t have the number 4 in its title for a reason: Canon-wise, they don’t officially consider it the fourth entry of the Master Chief’s saga.

“It’s not a continuation of the Master Chief story, nor is it the start of a new trilogy. For us, it’s a completely standalone game,” said executive producer Joseph Tung to Edge Magazine (via Eurogamer).

Creative director Marcus Lehto explained further: “We desired to make a standalone title, something that is the culmination of a decade of our efforts building Halo titles.” So while it may not technically be the “real” new entry in the Halo series, it appears that doesn’t mean it’ll be another more expansion-style offering like Halo 3: ODST, as Bungie says they’re pushing the Xbox 360 harder than ever with Reach.

  • HTC HD2 gets a spec boost for the US

Looks like the HTC HD2 is getting a little spec bump on its way to our fair shores: the official spec page lists the version bound for T-Mobile US with 1GB of ROM and 576 of RAM, a boost over the international edition’s 512 and 448MB. What’s more, it looks like a bigger 16GB microSD card will come in the box, a big jump over the 2GB stick currently bundled overseas. Not a bad little upgrade — dare we hope that it presages a much bigger bump to Windows Mobile 7 before the scheduled spring launch?

  • Lessons Learned From My Trip To Cougar Town

Cougars (or, older women who like to feed on younger “meat”) is a once-taboo social phenom that has slowly started to become socially acceptable, thanks to rad older women like Demi (and psycho ones like Mariah). These older leading ladies have given cougarism a major boost in social status. Nowadays, being an old woman with a young little hunk on your arm is almost…cool.

So a few weeks ago, I realized that I, as a fifth year college senior in the midst of a six-month dry spell, had no choice but to join the ranks of these famous females. Naturally, I started to scour the dorms and dining halls for my next victim. I eventually made my first move on a moderately successful, intelligent, sophomore cutie in my Lit class. And, because I am intelligent, mature, honest and amazing in the bedroom (all the reasons young men are said to swoon after older ladies), he instantly fell into my trap.

Needless to say, things have been going along swimmingly with my little stallion. I find his boyish charm, well, charming. I actually enjoy that his face is as smooth as a baby’s bottom and it doesn’t itch when we kiss. I even like that he still thinks that me inviting him back to my house to stay the night after a party is a “first date.” Unlike a lot of my other same-age guy pals, who are now proud owners of beer bellies and have 100 page theses to write, younger guys offer a little window through which I can relive my younger past.

But there are a couple things I’ve noticed about dating a younger man. Because college is old hat to me and I’m (theoretically) a mature woman about to move out into the “real world,” my little cutie and I are not exactly on the same page when it comes to lots of things. Here are a couple minor issues I’ve noticed about dating a younger man that every potential cougar needs to know:

    1) He’s still all about racking up the numbers. Young college guys are focused on one thing and one thing only: booty. And lots of it. Enough of it to beat their boys in the booty race. You want a relationship? Maybe the youngsters aren’t for you.

    2) He might not have his own cash. Though there is something to be said when your little cutie pulls out daddy’s platinum card to pay for dinner. No complaints here.

    3) He’s got a lot to learn. In the classroom, in the bedroom, in life…. This isn’t always a bad thing, but you want to be a girlfriend, not a professor (unless it’s in a role playing scenario).

    4) He’s still thinking in the short term. Which is awesome when it means that he doesn’t mind blowing off class and lying in bed all day cuddling with you. However, when you’re about to enter the real world (where smart, successful, single guys are a dying breed), it might feel a little like you’re wasting your time… and your last few years without cellulite.

    5) He’s not 21. Which means you are going to have to skip the bars with your friends to shadily chug beers in his dorm room, or worse, elbow your way through a sweaty, smelly frat party full of sweaty, smelly freshmen.

Even though it might sound like I’m bashing the babies, I’m not. Younger guys are still totally datable (or at least, hook-upable). They’ll look up to you, trust that you know what’s best, give you your space, and also be able to keep up with you in the sack. As long as you can handle a few drawbacks (which honestly, what relationship doesn’t have some?), what’s not to love?

Have any of you had experiences with dating younger? Share them in the comments!

  • Chinese Electric Car coming to America

A new era in the automobile industry is scheduled to begin this year as a Chinese company brings a pure electric car to America.

Press reports indicate that a Chinese company called BYD Auto plans to start selling a purely electric compact called the E6 in the US sometime this year. If these reports are true BYD would get the jump on San Jose based TeslaTesla Motors which is marketing an electric-powered sports car and planning to manufacture and market electric sedans in the near future. Tesla has long term plans for an electric compact.

The interesting thing about the E6 is that it is a real car similar in size and shape to a Toyota Yaris. It can haul up to five people and can carry a real load of groceries home from the store. Unfortunately the number of miles the E6 can run on a charge is not mentioned in the press releases or the company’s website. So it’s hard to say how this stacks up to the Tesla.

Initial press releases indicate that the E6 will sell for about $40,000 which seems excessive. It should appeal to the eco geek market even at that price. Since it’s a pure electric the E6 should qualify for some tax rebates and deductions.

The E6 could be a pretty good urban run about perhaps it would be a great vehicle for messenger services or meter maids. Or as a runaround for government or corporate employees who use vehicles from a motor pool.

It also remains to be seen whether BYD’s vehicle can pass muster with US, Canadian and European safety standards which are stricter than China’s. If the E6 can’t pass safety tests it’s a no sell in America, the European Union and Canada.

BYD isn’t just banking on electric cars it has a plug in hybrid called the F3DM which could be marketed in the US. The F3DM is apparently cheaper than a Toyota Prius. If the E6 doesn’t work out BYD Auto also makes regular gas powered cars mostly low end Sedans. Since BYD already has 11 car factories it could provide potential dealers with a large stock of cars.

Still if BYD could market a practical electric car that could meet US and European standards at a decent price it would be well placed to compete with Detroit and Toyota. Now might also be a good time to enter the US car market because all of the car dealers that GM and Chrysler will be looking for a car to sell. This would also make BYD the first Chinese company to sell a car in America.

How much of BYD is hype is hard to say. BYD Auto’s products do seem to sell well in China and it does have low cost labor. The company also makes its share of arrogant boasts claiming that it will be the number one auto maker in the world by 2025. BYD might be better advised to stay home in China which is now the world’s largest car market.

Although BYD has done very well in China, one of its cars the F3 outsold the Volkswagen Jetta and the Toyota Corolla in the Chinese market. BYD Auto has also done well exporting cars to South America. Whether BYD can market cars without the protection of the Chinese Communist Party remains to be seen.

There is one big reason to take BYD and its swaggering chairman Wang Chuan-Fu seriously. Warren BuffettWarren Buffett has made a large investment in BYD Auto. Buffett and his long time business partner Charley Munger of Los Angeles (who’s even more conservative than Buffett) like BYD a lot. These guys aren’t risk takers or gamblers so this seems interesting.

One reason why Buffett maybe snooping around BYD Auto is that Wang claims to have produced a cheap battery capable of powering an electric car. If this claim is true Wang could make a fortune because that battery could be used for far more than electric cars. To power houses and to store power from windmills for example.

Of course there’s another big reason why the Sage of Omaha wants to promote electric cars. Buffett’s investment powerhouse Berkshire Hathaway owns lots of electric utilities. Widespread use of electric cars would make a lot of money for old Warren and his charities.

  • Clearly, the Way the Democrats Can Get Back on Track is by Listening to Evan Bayh

225px-Evan_Bayh_official_portraitSomeone hand me the large polo mallet.

Centrist Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) on Saturday urged President Barack Obama to call for a freeze in discretionary spending in his State of the Union address next week. […] “The president could say in his State of the Union address, I’m going to include in my budget a freeze on discretionary spending, I’m drawing a line in the sand, and I’m going to use my veto pen to enforce that,” Bayh said on Bloomberg’s “Political Capital.”

Yeah, screw all of the millions of lazy people who don’t have jobs and need services and health care and schools for their kids and whose wives aren’t paid millions of dollars by sitting on the board of WellPoint. We really must tighten our belts.

For example, we’re spending a record $700B on defense this year.

What about cutting some of that, Evan?

BAYH: No, I don’t think it’s a good idea, not at this point…First of all, you need to provide for the nation’s security regardless of your financial situation, and there’s no bigger deficit hawk in Congress than I am.

Because for the DLC-types like Evan, tax cuts and defense spending don’t add to the deficit — only programs for the unwashed masses.

  • GM announces plans to close Opel Antwerp facility

General Motors is closing down its Opel plant in Antwerp, and forfeiting up to €500 million (about $707 million) in aid the Flemish government had promised if the operation had remained open. The action is expected to take place over the next few months. Shutting down Antwerp is just one part of GM’s restructuring program for its European operations – underway for a year now. All told, the automaker estimates it will have to cut 8,300 jobs, including 4,000 in Germany alone. According to GM, Opel needs to cut its production capacity by 20 percent to remain viable; the the Antwerp facility made models that could be built elsewhere.

The plant closure is one of the first in Europe since the financial crisis began two years ago. As expected, it is being met with controversy. GM’s European works council (EWC), a cross-border trade union corporation, calls the plant closure a “one-sided and economically unreasonable approach.” They accused GM of breaking an agreement to bring production of a small SUV to Antwerp (it’ll be made in South Korea instead). Enraged over the loss of their 2,606 jobs, the line workers at the Antwerp facility organized an impromptu blockade to prevent new cars from leaving the factory earlier this week.

  • Apple further tips their hand about tablet name

ipad-01It appears that Apple has tipped their hand regarding the name of their expected tablet computer. Way back in September of 2009, Apple filed a lawsuit against Fujitsu regarding the name, “iPad”. Apple hasn’t been aggressive about fighting for the name, but they did file for the name on an international scale, and they own that trademark.

The details are pretty technical, but what it boils down to is this: Fujitsu registered the trademark “iPad”, Apple sued them for it as soon as it was legally possible, in September 2009. Apple has been consistently delaying their court dates, by asking for more time to put together arguments about the case. This is identical to the tactics they used for the name “iPhone” with Cisco back in the day. Apple filed for (and has received) the international patent for the name “iPad” in January 2009.

What’s going to happen? Well, most likely, Apple will launch the “iPad” next week, Fujitsu will file an injunction, and then the lawyers will fight over the name and delay the launch until it’s all resolved.

  • How To Find a Great Startup Mentor

yoda_mentor_jan10.jpgIf you’re an early-stage entrepreneur and this is your first startup company, you are not alone. Thousands are toiling over code in the hopes that their product will gain users and revenue. The problem with being someone who can build a great product is that you might know more about your core technology then you do about the business of startups. In the past few weeks ReadWriteWeb has covered emerging tech hubs in Israel, Austin and Boulder and the common thread amongst them is that each community encourages mentorship. Today we’re looking at what you need to know to find a great mentor.

aristotle_mentorship_jan10.jpgSays Union Square Ventures VC Fred Wilson in a recent blog post, “The young entrepreneurs who are starting companies for the first time are best served by seeking out and getting experienced serial entrepreneurs as angel investors, board members, and mentors. We encourage all of the first time entrepreneurs we work with to do this.”

In a perfect world, launching a successful product would simply equate to building something phenomenal. But in reality, an isolated phenom can get buried beneath the noise of thousands of other startups. Wilson and a number of other investors ask first-time entrepreneurs to bring on trusted advisors in the hopes that newbies will broaden their social graph and avoid making the mistakes that others have already made. Below are some of the things you should consider before choosing a mentor.

Success: Just because someone speaks at conferences and has been in the industry for 10 years, does not mean they are qualified to be your mentor. Look at the individual’s past successes and find out exactly how they’ve contributed to them. Check with others to gauge this person’s visibility in the industry and determine whether or not that success is directly related to the type of business you want to build.

Connections: A good advisor/mentor will open doors in the places you need doors opened. If you’re a music content provider and you need help with licensing, find someone who knows the legal and business development side of major labels. If your revenue model is based on advertising, find someone who can help broker deals with ad networks and agencies. If you’re building your business on a 3rd party platform, get an advisor with friends on the inside.

Personality: Determine whether or not your potential advisor is famous or infamous. Sites like The Funded allow entrepreneurs to share their good and bad experiences of investment groups and individuals. While these reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, you want a mentor that is present to answer your questions, engaged enough to offer suggestions, patient enough to explain some of the basic tenets of startup life, and finally, mature enough to have their suggestions occasionally rejected.

Let us know how you chose your mentor/advisor in the comments below.

  • Beyonce & Jay-Z at Nice Airport

Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z take their privacy very seriously, possibly a bit too seriously sometimes. They couple are rarely seen in romantic poses or even communicating their affection for each other. So it came as a nice surprise to see them caught off-guard as they strolled through Nice airport hand in hand today. But nothing is ever as it seems with this couple and on closer inspection, they actually appeared to be holding a couple of oranges.

The smiles – and momentary dropping of the barriers – were perhaps down to last night’s success at the NRJ awards – the top event in France’s music calendar. Jay-Z received a rapturous response from the crowd at Cannes as he performed Empire’s State of Mind, while wife Beyoncé, picked up an honorary award.

  • Guillen: No decision yet on Thome’s return

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Sunday morning that no decision has been made on whether Jim Thome will return.

“Whatever decision we make will be the best for the ballclub,” Guillen told a crowd during SoxFest at the Palmer House.

Guillen emphasized the Sox’s decision would be made with their brains, rather than their heart.

General manager Ken Williams made it clear Saturday that he was leaving it to Guillen to decide whether Thome would be a good fit for the 2010 Sox team.

Guillen, who has said he wants to decide before he leaves town, added that his flight to Miami was moved from
    4 p.m. Sunday to Monday.

  • Teaching Geography with Children’s Literature: The River

    9780698400771.jpg

Have you ever wondered how a river forms? Once it forms, where does it go to? What types of environments will it pass through? The story The River which is written by Brigitte Sidjanski and illustrated by Bernadette Watts tells the story from the point of view of five pine cones who drop down from a pine tree into the river, curious about what adventures lie ahead of them:

“Five little pine cones peep down from their branches and wonder where the dancing brook will go. Then the cones pop off and-plop!-down they fall into the running water. An adventure begins.”

As the pine cones journey down the river, they each become attracted to the perks that different types of environments have to offer and, one by one, they decide to separate from the other pine cones in order to stay in their new homes. Only one of the five pine cones completes the journey down river and ends up on the beach, where it is soon buried in the sand but later flourishes into a gorgeous pine tree. This book teaches young children a great life lesson: the road to achieve something you really want is a long and winding road. But if you continue along the path, don’t give up and just keep moving forward, you will eventually see the end of the tunnel and all your dreams will come true.

    Curriculum Connections

This book is a great tool for kids to recognize and understand the many different types of environment that are out in the world today. The River incorporates bits and pieces from the Virginia Standards of Learning: World Geography, sections 2, 3 and 6. From Section 2, students are able to see the many different types of climate and weather patterns that occur in each form of environment; in Section 3, children get a glimpse of why humans are attracted to/prefer each style of environment based on its surroundings; and from section 6, students will get a better understanding about why some humans decide to migrate to different areas of the world based on their environmental and social preferences.

    Additional Resources

    • http://pineconelady.com/crafts2.html: This fun and unique website enables children to build different animals and crafts while using pine cones. With creativity, students can create four different kinds of animals that live in different environments and then the teacher can ask them in which environmental setting from The River that each animal belongs in.
    • http://www.kidsplanet.org/: This website is a must for all elementary school teachers that are looking to show their students the different types of wildlife out in the world and the environments that they inhabit. Providing creative and fun lesson plans, this site also provides hours of nonstop activities for children of all ages.

  • Report: NFL considering new heart-test requirement

It’s impossible to say whether an echocardiogram would have provided definitive clues to the health of Bears defensive end Gaines Adams before his death from cadiac arrest last Sunday in South Carolina, but the NFL may move toward a new measure that makes all players subject to the test at the scouting combine.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Sunday morning that in the wake of Adams’ death, the league’s cardiovascular committee is discussing the issue.

Adams was buried Friday after a funeral in Easley, S.C. Autopsies showed that he had an enlarged heart. He was 26.
