  • Bernanke faces new opposition from Democrats

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s nomination to a second term is in fresh jeopardy because of growing opposition from Senate Democrats, who have been battered by public anger about the economy and the political setback of losing a Massachusetts Senate seat to the Republicans this week.

At least four Senate Democrats have said they will oppose President Barack Obama’s decision to renominate the Fed chairman.

Critics of Bernanke, who was named to his first term by former President George W. Bush, are pressing the case that he was an architect of policies that helped drag the U.S. into a period of recession and high unemployment. His term expires Jan. 31.

“It is time for a change,” Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said Friday, hours after Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., announced his opposition to Bernanke.

“It is time for Main Street to have a champion at the Fed,” Boxer said. “Our next Federal Reserve chairman must represent a clean break from the failed policies of the past.”

Bernanke received an important boost late Friday, when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., endorsed the renomination. But several other Democrats remained noncommittal.

Amid uncertainty about Bernanke’s fate, the Dow Jones industrial average dropped nearly 217 points, or 2.1 percent, on Friday, after falling sharply a day earlier on Obama’s announcement that he would pursue strict new banking regulations.

The White House predicts Bernanke will be confirmed. But uncertainty about the outcome is a sign of Democratic concerns that the party needs to do more to convince voters that it feels their economic pain and will fight for them against powerful institutions.

Some Democrats are worried that their party will overreact to the Massachusetts defeat. Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., who supports Bernanke, said a Senate vote blocking his confirmation would rattle markets and destabilize the economy at a time when consumers need reassurance.

“We ought not to scapegoat Ben Bernanke,” he said.

Chris Krueger, a political strategist with Concept Capital, an institutional brokerage firm, said in a research note Friday that there was a 55 percent chance Bernanke would not be reconfirmed.

“Bernanke is really looking like he’s going to be the fall guy for Massachusetts, which is incredibly unfortunate and unwarranted,” Krueger said.

Asked about the Bernanke nomination Friday, White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said Obama “has a great deal of confidence in what Chairman Bernanke did to bring our economy back from the brink.”

“He continues to think he is the best person for the job and will be confirmed by the United States Senate,” Burton said.

  • Palm crafting GSM versions of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus?

Pardon us if we’re playing the role of Captain Obvious here, but just a heads up: we’ve got some pretty solid evidence before our eyes that Palm has GSM versions of both Verizon’s Pre Plus and Pixi Plus in the pipe. Said proof comes via the certification gurus at TUV Rheinland who’ve listed both a P101UNA and P121UNA in their systems from Palm; P101 and P121 are the numeric codes for the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, respectively, and “UNA” indicates a GSM variant (versus the deliciously underhanded “EWW” for CDMA). Now, neither AT&T nor Palm have given a lick of indication what two models they’ll be releasing later this year — but this is certainly a convenient coincidence, isn’t it?

  • Second fencing operation busted this week

Chicago police on Friday found about $125,000 worth of stolen goods when they served a search warrant on a West Side home, marking the second fencing operation broken up this week.

The search Friday of a home in the 5400 block of West Crystal Street netted items such as tools, bicycles and snow blowers worth about $125,000, police said.

Earlier this week a search of a location on the 4300 block of West Congress Parkway found more than $40,000 worth of stolen goods, much of which was returned to lawful owners after a public viewing held Tuesday.

A public viewing of the items found Friday will be held Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the community room of the Austin District police station, 5701 W. Madison St., police said.

Any victims of robberies are asked to bring supporting documents, such as case reports, receipts and serial numbers that indicate proof of ownership.

  • Great Finds

Last night I was looking around Etsy for French bulldog stuff (for you man-types: Etsy is an online community for buying and selling handmade items…but not just for men, anything you could want! …even things for Jpck, Free or Rickvid)

I ended up buying a recycled cardboard Ronald Reagan cuff bracelet (how cool is that?), but then I found a seller that has the coolest stuff…

Is that the cutest thing ever? She also has Harry Potter and Twilight ones… But, I think I might have to order this mini Constitution necklace:

Her Etsy shop is called Sophie’s Beads.

And I guess while I’m telling you about a complete stranger that doesn’t even know I’m posting this, I should direct you to my friend’s Etsy shop (which I did some of the photography for): Payton Woodcraft. Her and her husband make really cool wood jewelry. I don’t know about you, but I like to know I’m helping Conservative-owned small businesses!

  • Nanodragster is 50,000 times thinner than a hair, rides on gold dust

    Filed under:

    Nanodragster

Our sister site keeps up with the plainly-visible automated machines that are precursors to The Robot Apocalypse. But what about the microscopic machines that the T900s will be working with? At right in the picture above is a Top Fuel dragster. To the left is a nanodragster; the red guys in the foreground are the front wheels, and the chassis runs to the rear axle and wheels.

Powered by heat or an electric field and running on a path of gold dust, the nanodragster is an exercise in how best to create machines one atom at a time. Eventually, entire clouds of such contraptions will be put to work destroying puny humans building and repairing things from architectural structures to your own internal organs.

If you’re waiting to see how it does the quarter-mile, you might want to leave your request in a time capsule: moving at .0005 inches per hour, it will run the quarter in about 127,000 days. That means we can still outrun them. For now.

  • From CollegeFashion: 5 Celebrity Clothing Lines Totally Worth The Hype

Oh Mary Kate and Ashley; you do fashion so well!

Whether it’s a good idea or not, celebrities love to have a hand in every possible arena. From recording contracts to fragrance deals to hair extension lines, if they have the opportunity to further their status, they will do so without question.

Unfortunately, because of this, many celebrity crossover lines and products are sub par. On the other hand, however, there are some celebrities who have done it right. Intrigued? Keep reading for our five favorite celebrity clothing lines.

Elizabeth & James by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Self described as embodying an “eclectic lifestyle by blending uptown and downtown elements with casual and traditional style,” Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Elizabeth and James collection is “trend conscious, yet timeless.”

Named after the twins’ brother and sister and launched in 2007, Elizabeth and James features clothing, shoes, accessories and a newly added menswear branch. As the Olsen’s third venture into fashion, Elizabeth and James is a pseudo-luxury brand, priced lower than their high-end collection The Row, and priced higher than their Mary-Kate and Ashley line for discount stores. Popular with the celebrity set, Elizabeth and James designs have been seen on Dakota Fanning, Kristin Cavallari, and Jessica Simpson, just to name a few.

For locations on where to buy Elizabeth and James, check out their website, or shop online at ShopBop.

    Why We Love It

Ever since I first heard the words, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…Actually it was bedtime,” I have been a Mary-Kate and Ashley devotee. In the 90s, MK&A were the girls who felt like your best friends. I grew up watching the girls first on “Full House,” then “Two of a Kind,” and finally, “So Little Time.” Beyond their enviable acting careers, however, the girls have grown into fashionistas in their own right, making headlines with their unique hippie-grunge-bohemian style.

Naturally, when I heard that the twins were teaming up to create their own high-fashion line, I was intrigued. Today, I can almost always look to Elizabeth and James for some fashion inspiration. Ruffled dresses? Oxfords? Boyfriend blazers? They’ve got it all, and their pieces are always styled in a way that looks both effortless and chic.

Mary-Kate and Ashley’s collection of smart, modified-basics is totally crave-worthy, and always on my radar… though their pieces are not so college-budget friendly. So how to get it? Whether you save for months, score a super-marked-down piece on ShopBop or opt for the Forever 21 knock-offs, if you want it, there’s a way to posses a little bit of MK&A style.

Who else made this list? And what’s so great about them? Read the rest at CollegeFashion.net!

  • City of Chicago truck drivers consider strike vote

About 2,000 City of Chicago truck drivers plan a vote next week which might authorize a strike that could cripple such vital city services as snow removal, garbage collection and airport operations.

The drivers say the action is in protest against Mayor Richard M. Daley’s decision to reduce their hours.

Daley wants to move O’Hare and Midway Airport snow removal drivers from a guaranteed, eight-hour work day to just two hours on days without snow.

Local Teamsters union officials say Daley is punishing the union for rejecting his demand for furlough days and comp time instead of cash overtime.

Chicago Law Department spokeswoman Jennifer Hoyle insists the Teamsters’ contract specifically prohibits them from striking.

  • Obama’s Blunder: Forgetting Politics Is All About Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, And More Jobs

    barack obama president

It’s safe to say that the Obama administration hit a new low this week, which happened to coincide with the one-year anniversary of his Presidency.

In a few days he saw his most important policy goal (healthcare) killed by a stunning election in Massachusetts, and he may not even be able to get his Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke re-confirmed. Obama’s poll numbers are terrible.

The bad poll numbers (and Massachusetts) forced Obama to pivot hard against Wall Street, which may have tanked the market, with the week ending on a three-day string of triple-digit losses on the Dow.

So how did it come to this?

At some point Obama stopped focusing on jobs. After passing the initial stimulus (just a few weeks after his inauguration) he’s basically gone a year of watching the unemployment rate go up and not doing anything about it.

Instead, he spent most of the summer and the fall working on an unpopular, ill-explained healthcare bill, and all he has to show for it is a severely weakened Democratic party (they’re even freaking out in California).

Now he has to compensate by undoing the pro-Wall Street policies he started off with (which may be great), but it means another distraction that doesn’t have anything to do with jobs.

And as long as unemployment is growing, his popularity will remain in the toilet.
