  • Chicago-area natural gas rates on their way up

Chicago and north shore gas customers can expect higher home heating costs starting next month after the Illinois Commerce Commission approved a rate hike for two area gas providers.

Despite pleas by watchdog and citizens groups, the ICC today approved the increases sought by Peoples Energy and North Shore Gas.

Both companies are subsidiaries of the Integrys Energy Group.

Early estimates indicate that Peoples Energy customers will pay about $4 more a month, or $48 a year, while north suburban residents will pay an extra $5.50 a month, or $66 a year.

The increases will take effect Jan. 28 and will be reflected on customers’ bills beginning mid-February, officials say.

The utilities didn’t have a concrete figure on how much money they would earn from the hikes, but it is believed to be in the tens of millions.

Peoples Energy officials said the increases were necessary to offset higher delivery and maintenance costs.

“It was a hard decision for us to seek this increase…but there are numerous factors that continue to drive up our overall costs,” spokeswoman Bonnie Johnson said.

“Like any other business, we have to be able to charge rates that reflect the extra costs of doing business today, and not the costs that was four years earlier. Even if the economy was a little bit better than it is, there never is a good time that customers want to see an increase,” she said.

Johnson added that those average increases could be less if citizens conserve energy, by, for example, setting their thermostats to 68 degrees during the day.

Opponents of the hike vowed to fight on. On its Web site, the nonprofit Citizen Utility Board vowed to appeal the board’s decision and called for both utilities to do their own cost cutting.

“While the companies got less than what they asked for, they still got more than what they need or deserve,” the board said in a news release.

“It’s the worst possible time for a rate hike, as Chicago-area consumers struggle to make ends meet in an ailing economy. The companies should tighten their belts just as their customers have been forced to. We look forward to fighting the rate hikes on appeal.”

The board also derided Peoples Energy’s “infrastructure cost recovery” charge slated to begin in April 2011, which would charge customers to pay for pipe-replacement costs.

Santoni driving shoes for Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG – Click above for high-res image gallery

Driving a supercar upside down in a tunnel requires some fancy footwork, even if there isn’t a clutch pedal to manipulate. Fortunately the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has got the right footwear thanks to a collaboration with Santoni. The Italian clothier, which has shared a longstanding relationship with Benz’s performance house, has crafted these specially-made, FIA-certified driving shoes.

Presented recently at the Pitti Uomo 77 boutique in Milan, the SLS AMG driving shoes will be available to buyers – and presumably to fans – of the corresponding supercar in black, and soon in a variety of colors to compliment the high-performance machine. The laces, though, open like any other shoes, not like the gullwing they’re made to accompany.

  • Russia Is Toast

    Old Russian Lady

The concept of BRICs nations (Brazil, Russia, India China) as an investment theme has been a mind-blowing success, both for the investors who initially followed the idea when it was created in 2001, and for the man who created it -- Goldman Sach's Jim O'Neill.

But let's face it, there's clearly always been an oddball in the grouping -- Russia.

Maybe things looked a lot different back in 2001, but today, it's clear that Russia isn't the BRIC we hoped it could be.

The population is literally dying off, the country's political development is going backwards, and in the end any success we've seen from the nation has been nothing more than Russia riding the wave of high energy prices.

So Goldman, it's time to kick Russia out of the BRICs. Then add two of the MAVINS, Australia and South Africa, to create the new 'BASICs'.

  • “Cultural Ignorance” or Necessary Precaution?

“A Jewish prayer box worn by a teen passenger caused a Thursday morning furor on a flight from LaGuardia Airport, forcing an emergency landing in Philadelphia, authorities said.

The mix-up involved the 17-year-old boy’s tefillin, a black box filled with Biblical verses and tied with leather straps to his head, said Philadelphia police Lt. Frank Vanore.

Although the teen explained the significance of the tefillin to the crew, the pilot opted to land the plane in Philadelphia anyway, Vanore said.

The tefillin-wearing youth was traveling with his sister from New York to Louisville. The boxes – a second one is tied around the arm – are typically worn by men in certain Orthodox Jewish communities.” (source)

Hello! People! I don’t give a crap if you’re carrying the ashes of Abraham Lincoln and praying that they don’t spill. This is POST 9/11 and if you have black boxes strapped to you and you’re mumbling prayers (regardless of which God you are praying to), consider yourself a threat. Consider the fact that you’re scaring the crap out of the other passengers that are jittery flying anyway. Please consider praying silently in your head and refraining from garb that could harbor explosives for the duration of the flight –is that really too much to ask?!

I was shocked that a poll on the NY Daily News’ site has a poll in which 58% voted that this flight landing was due to “cultural ignorance” and 42% (myself included) voted that it was a “necessary precaution in this day and age.”

I say bravo to the flight crew that decided to err on the side of caution, and to the young man that cooperated fully (and probably won’t be calling the ACLU). This should send a message to CAIR that anyone in strange clothing carrying strange objects and mumbling prayer is subject to suspicion…not just Muslims.

  • In The Good Old Days, Bankers Held 400% More Reserves And Were Executed If They Failed

    Chart

Believe it or not, there was actually a day when banks weren’t guaranteed by their government to survive.

During this time, in 19th century America and Britain, banks unsurprisingly were far more cautious, maintaining a core of reserve capital amounting to 25% of the value of their total banking assets.

This reserve was used as a buffer to absorb losses on unexpected bad loans without bankrupting the bank.

This all changed as government decided to back-stop banks, as shown in the graph to the right. Over time, core capital (‘equity’ in the chart) held as reserves shrunk to just a quarter of what it used to be.

It’s probably because they no longer needed to worry about dying if their loans went bad:

    Economist:

First came liquidity support by central banks; deposit insurance followed; in the latest crisis governments have given all creditors a blanket implicit guarantee. As a result, banks have been prepared to let their insulation wear thin.

Going into the crisis, some Western institutions’ core capital was 3% of their assets or less, and less than a tenth of those assets were liquid. Government support may also have given banks an incentive to grow much bigger, so that most European countries now underwrite banking systems several times larger than their GDPs.

As Andrew Haldane of the Bank of England has noted, the world has come a long way since 1360, when a banker in Barcelona was executed in front of his failed firm.

“He told me, ‘You remind me of my Amy. You’re so beautiful,’” the 17-year-old blabbed to The Sun this week.

After meeting on Facebook, Blake took Mia out to his local pub for a date. They later ended up back at his place.

“I was lying there and his hands were all over me. Then he suddenly realized. He stopped, looked at me, and said, ‘Are you a transsexual?’ I told him yes and he just smiled,” Mia explains.

Mia says not only was Blake comfortable with her sexuality at the time, he was also “fascinated with her Adam’s Apple…..”

The pair continued to meet for hotel sex sessions over the next few weeks, before Blake broke things off.

  • Digitimes confirms Windows Mobile 7 for MWC also

On this particular occasion, I don’t know if this Digitimes article is quoting us, or providing new information, but the Taiwanese industry gossip rag has some more, if not new, information about Windows Mobile 7.

Digitimes, who was the original source of the claim that only Windows Mobile “6.6” will show up at Mobile World Congress, now confidently expect Windows Mobile 7 to join its older sibling on the stage.

They expect Release to Manufacturers in September 2010, with devices showing up either in Q4 2010 or Q1 2011.

They note, as we ourselves mentioned last week, that Asian localizations have not been completed yet, which has given some the impression the whole OS has been delayed.

They list the usual suspects as partners, including  Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Toshiba, HTC (High Tech Computer), Asustek Computer and Acer, and confirm Windows Mobile 7 will support Zune, Xbox Live and Silverlight.

Read more about Digitimes’s recapitulation here.

  • Best Historical Figure (other than Ronald Reagan)?

Not sure if you remember when my oldest had the Living Wax Museum project at the end of 3rd grade…he was Ronald Reagan? Well, now it’s that time again and take a wild guess who my middle son wants to be?

Yes, George W. Bush. Actually his first choice was Harry Houdini, but someone else picked him. Last night he said he wanted to be Dubya and I discouraged him. Which sucks that I had to do. I asked him why he wanted to be him and he informed me that they have a lot in common…it seems they are “both Republicans, both love baseball and both list tacos as their favorite food.” I told him teachers might treat him different if he chooses Bush. He doesn’t know this and I would never get into it with him…but I’m 99.9% sure his teacher this year is a big Ellen fan…if you know what I mean…

It sucks I have to burden a 9 year old with this crap. He should just be able to be the person he wants…but the possible backlash/smirks/sneers is reality, right? Am I over-reacting? I’d bet my life there will be multiple Michelle and Barack Obamas -possibly a Hillary or two and those parents won;t struggle over the decision. He asked me if teachers could give him bad grades because he liked Bush. Then we discussed ‘should’ and ‘could…’

Any other suggestions? Stormin’ Norman? Ollie North? Chesty Puller? Winston Churchill? It’s supposed to be someone that changed history…

  • Rescuecom Wants It Both Ways Over Keyword Ads; Involved In Two Lawsuits… But On Opposite Sides

There have been a bunch of silly lawsuits over the use of competitors’ trademarked terms being used in ads on Google AdWords. There are a bunch of different legal issues related to those lawsuits, including whether or not Google should be liable for actions of advertisers, whether it’s trademark infringement to mention a competitor in an ad, and whether it’s trademark infringement just to have an ad triggered on a competitor’s trademarked phrase. There’s a company called Rescuecom that has been particularly aggressive in these lawsuits, suing Google for a competitor having ads triggered on their trademarks. While a district court rejected that claim, last year an appeals court sent it back to the lower court to try again. And yet… at the same time, it appears that Rescuecom is involved in a lawsuit on the other side with Best Buy. Best Buy claims that Rescuecom is infringing on the “Geek Squad” trademark, and Rescuecom claims that it has a fair use defense… yes for the very same thing it’s accusing others of doing. You have to imagine that’s going to be pointed out in both of those lawsuits. Some have suggested that Rescuecom doesn’t really care either way, and it believes that these lawsuits are a good PR campaign — which could explain its different view in each lawsuit. If that’s the case, it seems like a rather big abuse of the legal system.

  • Justin Timberlake Elisha Cuthbert Dating?

Rumor: Justin Timberlake been getting his moan on on the down low with sexy 24 star Elisha Cuthbert, a new report claims. The “SexyBack” singer’s fallen head over heels for the stunner, who plays Kiefer Sutherland’s daughter on the hit FOX show, GLOBE’s Loosch Lips Column dished in the pub’s Feb. 1 edition.

    Justin TimberlakeElisha Cuthbert

According to the tabloid scoop, Justin is so taken with Elisha he’s prepared to date her exclusively and plans to dump his longtime girlfriend — Summer Catch cutie Jessica Biel — sometime in the coming weeks. Ironically, JB has spent the week dodging rumors that she got a little too close for comfort with rapper Lupe Fiasco during a charity trek up Mount Killimanjaro last week.

“He’s no longer in love with her,” blabs one Loosch Lips snitch. “They’ve drifted apart and he’s ready to move one. Justin says the bond between him and Elisha is electric. They can’t get enough of one another!”

Jessica may not be the only person hurt by this rumored union, according to the report. The Undercover Lovers first became pals when Elisha was engaged to marry Trace Ayala, Justin’s dear friend and fashion business partner. JT used Cuthbert’s relationship with Ayala as the inspiration behind his 2007 smash “What Goes Around…Comes Around.” Cuthbert was furious at the time, but recently reconnected with Justin, GLOBE proclaims.

“Justin had a secret crush on Elisha back then, but he was afraid to say anything. They’ve stayed in touch and recently started hooking up in L.A….They want to go public with their relationship, but he needs to ditch Jessica first.”

Timberlake — whose famous former flames include Britney Spears, Alyssa Milano, and Cameron Diaz — was most recently romantically-linked to island beauty Rihanna, who he collaborated with on the hit 2008 single “Rehab.”

  • Um It’s Scott Baio … Need I Say More?

I’m filing this one under chicanery and foolishness. It seems that Scott Baio, of the TV show Happy Days, posted an augmented unflattering picture of First Lady Michelle Obama on Twitter with the caption, “WOW He wakes up to this every morning.” According to the NY Daily News

“Ex-”Happy Days” star Scott Baio says he’s received a barrage of death threats after he mocked Michelle Obama on Twitter.

Baio, 48, posted an unflattering picture of the First Lady on Tuesday accompanied by some even more unflattering remarks.

“WOW He wakes up to this every morning,” Baio tweeted.

In minutes, the former “Charles in Charge” star received a slew of angry comments.

Some were on the playful side: “Well she’s still better looking than your doughy looking a–.”

    Others were downright frightening.

“Easy to find your house Scottie boy and finish YOU,” one person wrote. “I am a republican and I love Mrs O.”

Baio backtracked immediately, saying he’s not a racist. His wife’s best friend is black.

The reality TV star and vocal Republican even posted a picture of the woman and implored his detractors to back off.

“For New followers: I POST A LOT OF JOKES WITH PICS,” Baio wrote. “They are JUST that, a joke. NOT targeting anyone. Laughter IS the best medicine.”

The brouhaha prompted Baio to contact the FBI and scores of people to begin following him on Twitter.

“Because people love to hate,” Baio said.”

For a millisecond I was offended, but then I considered the source. This man is an “actor” who’s claim to fame is being a childhood star, a manny, and starring in a reality television show where he looks for a wife because he is 40-something and never been married. And he’s inquiring about who someone wakes up with every morning?

Baio even retreated to the “I’m not a racist, some of my best friends are Black argument.” However, that was a stretch because the Black best friend belongs to his wife and not him. Maybe if the best friend were his they could have told him that’s the last thing you want to say to disprove that you are a racist.

Perhaps Baio is taking the Madison Avenue approach to resuscitating his non-existent acting career. If the mere mention of the Obama name  can sell cardigans, watches, windbreakers, etc, surely mentioning the First Lady may get a casting director to give him a call.

  • Work starts to demolish unsafe Sunderland car park

    http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/W…afe.6005847.jp

    Quote:

Work has begun to dismantle the condemned multi-storey car park above Sunderland’s Jacky White’s Market.

The city council was forced to close the Central Area Multi-Storey building in December 2008 after fears it could collapse.

The 391-space car park, opened in 1966, was closed within hours of a engineer’s survey which deemed the building unsafe.

Traders at Jacky White’s feared for their livelihoods when plans to move the market were uncovered by the Echo in January last year.

But council chiefs put forward a £2.9million plan to save the historic market hall and keep it open while the work is done overhead.

Officials say repair and refurbishment of the structure will cost about £6million and the work will take almost a year to complete.

The bill for temporary propping measures and consultants’ fees already stands at £200,000 and will be met from the existing budget.

Contractors began putting temporary measures in place this week which will allow work on the car park to proceed safely while the market remains open underneath.

Demolition work will remove the unstable top levels of the structure and leave and repair the bottom two-tiers of the car park.

Lib Dem councillor Paul Dixon, of Millfield, who campaigned on behalf of market traders and residents who rely on the car park said it was good news work had begun.

He said: "Hopefully at the end of it all the council will provide parking for the residents of the town centre flats.

"The two remaining levels had been earmarked for that purpose but the council now says it has not made its mind up yet."

Consultants said both lifts have been decommissioned as are "beyond economic repair".

Stephen Pickering, Deputy Executive Director of City Services, said: "The work is being undertaken outside of the market opening hours to minimise disruption and will continue for two months.

"The work is being carried out in advance of the forthcoming demolition of the multi-storey car park.

"The demolition is planned to commence in May and to continue until December.

"No decision has yet been made regarding the future of the roof top area above Jacky White’s Market."
