  • “Aging” Nicole Kidman Dropped From Three Films

    Blame it on the Botox?

Nicole Kidman has been dropped from three films, just weeks after the Oscar winner’s stiff performance in the movie musical Nine was panned by critics. Kidman’s roles in the upcoming features Bel Ami, Monte Carlo, and a remake of Marilyn Monroe’s cinema classic How To Marry A Millionaire have been recast, according to a scoop featured in the Feb. 1 issue of Star Magazine.

Michael Levine, a publicist with public relations firm LCO, points to Nicole’s “advanced age” — she’s 42 — as well as a decline in box office bankability as contributing factors in her new career troubles.

“Nicole’s not aging gracefully, and it’s hurting her chances in Hollywood,” Michael says a matter-of-fact.

Of course, it isn’t all bad news for Nic. The star is still set to play the first man to undergo a sex change operation in The Danish Girl, expected to debut in theaters next year.

  • “Pants On The Ground” Singer Record Deal

General Larry Platt is the biggest sensation to hit the audition room on the ninth season of American Idol, and there may be a recording contract in the retiree’s future. Platt famously lambasted the saggy pants-wearing culture common with an overwhelming number of men under 30 in his self-written ditty, “Pants On The Ground.”

The song became an overnight anthem. Fans have hit YouTube more than 3 million times to view the infamous video of General Larry swaying and James Brownin’ It as he chants: “Pants On The Ground/Pants On The Ground/Lookin’ Like A Fool With Your Pants On The Ground….” The phrase even became a trending topic on Twitter.

Now, the Atlanta homeless shelter employee — who marched with Dr. King during the Civil Rights Movement — is on course to become Idol’s next William Hung if Jake Records has its way. Platt, 63, has been offered a deal with the label, says Jake CEO Scott Thomas. Jake is an independent label that launched in 2008 and counts alt-rappers Digital Underground among the artists on its roster.

“General Larry Platt has an energy about him that is infectious,” Thomas praised the veteran in a release Wednesday. “We’d love to work with Mr. Platt to generate some exposure for his original song, but also the causes that he holds near and dear to him.”

Platt appeared on The View on Monday to perform the song, and inspired both Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre and Jimmy Fallon to cover the hit. According to TMZ.com, Platt never obtained a copyright for “Pants On The Ground,” so he is looking to hire a lawyer to help him collect some kind of compensation.

  • Sony Japan’s Little DRC-BT60P Bluetooth Audio Receiver

Sony is bringing a new portable bluetooth receiver, named DRC-BT60P, to the market on February 10th. It’s a rather small device that weighs about 30g – think of it as a remote for your bluetooth device, such as a phone, laptop, or even a Walkman with a bluetooth adapter. It features a 3.5mm headphone jack and FM tuner. Here’s a little diagram of the unit itself:

You can see there are several buttons on the front, including Previous Track/FM Tune -, Play/Pause, Next Track/FM Tune +, FM on/off, and phone.

As you can see the OLED (monochromatic) display on the device has several functions for showing various statuses, such as if there is a bluetooth connection, or if FM radio is on, if music is playing, if the phone connection is active. We really like that this charges through USB as well, and thoughtfully includes noise suppression and echo cancellation.

As you can see the picture above specifically mentions DRC-BT60 without the P at the end, but after checking various sites we’ve come to determine that its more of a branding thing, where I guess the DRC-BT60 is aimed towards Walkman users and will perhaps be included as a package. The DRC-BT60P will be aimed towards everyone else.

  • “Jersey Shore” Season 2 Sea Isle City?

While we’re on the topic of Jersey Shore: The mayor of Sea Isle City, NJ issued a press release Thursday to quash rumors that MTV’s unscripted smash is on its way to town.

Sea Isle City had been rumored to be the next location for the mid-season reality show, which filmed its first season in nearby Seaside Heights last summer. But there’s no truth to those rumors, say city officials. Jersey Shore’s so-called stereotypical portrayal of Italian-Americans led to a advertiser boycott and criticism from politicians and public interest groups — now Sea Isle City mayor Leonard C. Desiderio has become the latest public figure distancing himself from the program.

“To date, there has been no contact made to City officials regarding this possibility,” the release states. “We have not been contacted about the show ‘Jersey Shore’ filming in Sea Isle. This is an unsubstantiated rumor and in fact, we understand the show is returning to Seaside Heights for the next season. My staff and I are in communication with MTV to clear up this matter and ensure the media is provided with accurate information.”

MTV has not announced plans for a second season of Jersey Shore.

  • Remember The MATRIX? Former Drug Smuggler In Charge Of It Is Building More Databases…

Remember the MATRIX? No, not the movie, but the highly controversial gov’t database that was to store and access all sorts of information on people, and kick out any individual’s “terrorist quotient,” if necessary. After a lot of negative publicity… and someone hacking into the database, the project was shut down in 2005. But, apparently the guy behind it is back with another attempt at a massive database. Michael Scott points us to a profile of the guy who ran the MATRIX (turns out he’s a former drug smuggler, so that should make you more comfortable), who since then has started another operation that is also trying to build up another big database of private info, and is using the always popular method of positioning it as something useful “to protect the children.”

Apparently, he’s set up the database to help find missing children and track down those who abduct them. This is absolutely a worthy cause — but there are some serious questions about the method here. He’s letting law enforcement use the technology he’s developing for free, but in exchange many believe he’s trying to get access to government databases to add more data to his own collection. Certainly, some government officials are happily using his technology, but others were turned off by some of the meetings, where they felt that the guy was asking for way too much — including financial records and even movie rental history.

It’s no secret that there are a bunch of big database companies out there creating huge profiles of pretty much everyone… but it does seem a bit sketchy when a guy who has tried to do similar things in the past (and had them shut down) shows up again trying to gain access to private government databases to include in his own system, in exchange for giving the police free access to that system.

  • Whitney Tilson: I’m Shorting The Hell Out Of Homebuilders Because America Won’t Need Any Homes For Years

Whitney Tilson makes a pretty simple, yet solid point against U.S. homebuilders. The U.S. has a massive oversupply of housing right now, as evidenced by the collapse of housing prices. Millions of additional foreclosures are on the way as well.

Thus until the U.S. works off its massive oversupply of housing, it won't need any new houses for a long, long time. Thus there will be little work for homebuilders and their employees even if the economy is recovering.

Conveniently, homebuilding stocks such as KB Homes (KBH), DR Horton (DHI), and Lennar (LEN) have rallied quite a bit from their March 2009 lows, even if they've come off from their 52-week highs already. Whitney Tilson has homebuilders as a major short position; it's certainly an idea worth investigating.

    Start at 3:00

    • "So we think over the next couple of years, there are millions more foreclosures."
    • "We're not predicting calamity, but it's going to keep the housing market under pressure."
    • "Homebuilding is our single biggest category of short."
    • "There's no need for new houses for at least a couple of years in this country."

  • From Hypo- to Hyperthyroidism

Something odd happened to me recently: I tested positive for Graves Disease.

This is really interesting since I was hypothyroid for 17 years and then in the past year noticed my TSH near rock bottom [signifying hyperthyroidism].

Yes, Graves Disease is autoimmune. [No surprise there, right?]

Has anyone else with Type 2 Diabetes and thyroid issues seen a flip/flop? Do you know what caused it?
