  • Guillen doesn’t envision Thome in plans

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was very eager Thursday to start spring training, even with the likelihood of not having Jim Thome as the designated hitter in what aims to be a more versatile lineup.

”Nobody is a bigger Jim Thome fan than me,” Guillen said at U.S. Cellular Field.

”But in the meantime, (Thome’s departure) gives this ballclub an opportunity to give more people more at-bats and to be flexible in different ways.”

Guillen said Mark Kotsay, Andruw Jones, Paul Konerko, Omar Vizquel and Carlos Quentin can serve as the DH.

”To me, it’s easier and we get more production with the team we have now that way.”

Guillen pointed that only a few teams, such as Boston (David Ortiz) and Cleveland (Travis Hafner) have full-time DHs. That’s one possible reason why Thome remains available as a free agent.

”Fans, they’re not going to be happy about something,” Guillen said.”Or a question mark as to why we don’t have a big left-handed hitter. We did for a couple years. The ballclub we had in the past didn’t create that many runs.

‘(Obviously) we’re going to play different. We’re not going to wait for guys who can hit 30 home runs. I hope not. I hope they don’t come to the mentality that we need pop.”

Guillen promised the Sox would employ a style that realizes less on home runs and is willing to sacrifice the power in late-inning situations.

”How good are we going to be? I’ll take my chance,” said Guillen, alluding to the lack of questions surrounding open jobs in spring training. ”It was fun for me, because I kept you guys busy.”

Guillen compared this off-season to the one that preceded the World Series title season in 2005 with so many moves.

”I’m not going to say we’re going to win, but it worked,” Guillen said. ”I think the direction we’re going is the right one.”

Guillen welcomed the switch of Gordon Beckham from third base to second and looks for more leadership from shortstop Alexei Ramirez and Beckham.

Guillen also got positive feedback from Alex Rios, who will benefit from a full spring training with his new team after struggling during the final two months.

”From the first day in spring training, we have to create how we’re going to play during the season,” Guillen said. ”I’m not going to wait until the last week of spring training. No, you’re going to see in the first day bunting and hit-and-run.

‘You’re going to see stuipd things from the manager, crazy things from the manager. You’re going to wonder what Ozzie is doing, but we’re going to see what we can work with.”

Guillen also issued a warning for his players to remain in shape.

”I think A.T. (conditioning coordinator Allen Thomas) is going to have a lot of problems because everyone has to stay on the top of conditioning,” Guillen said. ”He’s got to have a whip. Maybe it’s my fault. We let a lot of things happen and we look back and someone is out of shape.”

Guillen wasn’t pointing fingers directly at closer Bobby Jenks, who expressed his objection to Guillen saying last October that Jenks needed to report in better condition.

”I was surprised what happened,” Guillen said, referring to Jenks’ reply to comments made by general manager Ken Williams and Guillen about his health.

”We want the best from him. If Bobby is in the best shape he can be, he can help us.”

Guillen said he talked in stern tones to rookie Miguel Cabrera in 2003 when they were in Florida about the need to lose weight.

”I got in his face,” Guillen said. ”I said, ‘bro, if you want to be a better baseball player, you got to lose all that weight.’ Sometimes the truth hurts.”

Guillen reiterated that Jenks remains the Sox’s closer ”until he can’t be my closer.”

  • GM expanding Pause and Play Radio to two new vehicles

Here’s another feature you can include in the 2011 Buick Regal purchase price: Pause and Play radio. It’s already a feature on some of General Motors‘ higher-end vehicles like the Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac CTS, and will be introduced on the Regal and Chevrolet Cruze.

Working like your cable TV DVR, Pause and Play allows you to save up to 20 minutes of whatever’s playing on the radio, even XM or Sirius. That it’s coming on the Buick is only to be expected. That it’s coming on the Cruze is good news from GM, allowing us to believe even more and more in a future of full-featured little domestic cars on decent budgets. So, SYNC… take that!

  • University of Illinois Trustees vote for changes in purchases, contracts

Chairman Christopher Kennedy said he hoped the action, following a prior change to halve the number of board committees, would signal to prospective presidential candidates that the board will be more hands-off.

Kennedy was re-elected today to chair the board for another year.

“We want to keep our board and any other subsequent boards from overreaching,” Kennedy said. “One way the board can overreach is by steering contracts … It is no way to run a large and complex organization.

“This is a great way to signal to the pool of candidates looking at this (president) job that this board has no intention of micromanaging.”

Under the new policy, board authorization will be required for professional contracts of at least $1 million a year, up from $100,000; purchases of supplies of at least $1 million, up from $200,000; capital projects of at least $5 million, up from $2 million; and construction contracts of $2.5 million, up from $500,000.

That means significantly fewer contracts will require board action. While 41 professional services contracts required approval during the last three years under the old policy, only eight would require it under the new one.

For construction contracts, of the 147 approved by the board in the last three years, only 30 would need it under the new limits.

Andy Shaw, executive director of the Better Government Association, criticized the change, calling it “the wrong message to send at the wrong time.”

“This is the school embarrassed and discredited by the (admissions) scandal. For at least the next year, when trying to repair their reputation, they should have more oversight rather than less. It is a mistake,” Shaw said.

“From the standpoint of good government and from the standpoint of a taxpaying resident of the state, I would be much more comfortable if these trustees were paying closer attention to the tax dollars.”

The new amounts are similar to those at other Big 10 universities, some of which require no board approval, according to a survey conducted by U. of I. But the U. of I. will now have higher thresholds that those at Illinois’ other public universities, based on an informal survey done by Southern Illinois University two years ago.

“This is not a time to worry about what the other Big 10 schools are doing. They are not Illinois. We need closer scrutiny because we have collectively lost the confidence of the public,” Shaw said.

Interim President Stan Ikenberry said the board won’t be abdicating its oversight because it still will be notified of contracts approved by the campuses.

The former board members, most of whom resigned last year, lowered the dollar amounts in 2005. For example, they reduced the amount needed for approval of professional services, such as legal and consulting work, from $250,000 to $100,000. The changes approved Thursday bring the amounts to levels higher than they were prior to 2005.

“The amount of things that were brought to the board was just too much,” said trustee Ed McMillan, one of three board members retained from the prior group.

“Previously, the board had less confidence in delegating to the decision makers at the university level.”

He said there still will be board control: “We will also have the opportunity, if we have any concern about a particular area, to challenge them.”

  • Priest arraigned on abuse charges in Kane County

The priest accused of sexually assaulting a young boy appeared at a hearing today where details of the five-year abusive relationship were released.

The Rev. Alejandro Flores, 37, was arraigned on seven felony counts that alleged the Bolivian-born priest molested the youth, starting in January 2005 when the boy would have been eight years old.

Authorities alleged the abuse took place in Flores’ vehicle and at the St. Charles home of the victim’s mother. At the time, Flores, who was ordained in 2009, was a seminarian assigned to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Chicago, and he had a relationship with the victim’s family.

At Thursday’s hearing, Kane County Judge James Hallock asked Flores whether he needed an interpreter, and he said “a little,” so Hallock ordered a Spanish language interpreter made available.

Flores was arrested Wednesday, following his release from a Joliet area hospital where he had been taken following an apparent suicide attempt earlier this month. Church officials said Flores, who had knowledge of the abuse investigation against him, had hurled himself from the balcony of a shuttered Joliet church.

He did not need any assistance to enter or leave the courtroom Thursday and did not show any obvious signs of injury.

Kane County Assistant State’s Atty. Deb Bree told the judge that the boyfriend of the victim’s mother thought he had seen Flores and the boy engaged in sexual contact on two occasions.

In a bizarre revelation, Bree relayed a conversation a fellow priest had with Flores while Flores was hospitalized.

Flores allegedly told the other priest that Flores had been at the victim’s house several months earlier, and that the victim’s mother had served him tequila.

Flores said he fell asleep and later awoke to find himself having sexual contact with the youth.

Geneva Attorney Glenn Sowa said several concerned lay people from one of the churches where Flores served had hired him.

“Obviously, we intend to enter a plea of not guilty and we’ll move forward from there,” Sowa said.

Bree said Flores had surrendered his passport to authorities. He is being held in the Kane County jail in lieu of $1 million bond. His next court date was set for Feb. 10.

  • 2010 Detroit Auto Show closes briefly after fire at Audi stand

Attendees are expected to be let back in to the Detroit auto show this evening after an electrical fire in the ceiling of the Audi exhibit caused organizers to evacuate a smokey Cobo Center main floor earlier today. Organizers hop eto let people back in around 5:00 p.m., and those who were at the show at the time of fire will be granted admission back in on any of the remaining show days.

No one was injured and there were no reports of damaged vehicles.

Audi employees moved quickly to evacuate the floor and started to move vehicles off of their display, including the $175,000 R8 Spyder, when flames starting shooting up from the German automakers exhibit ceiling.

Police and security personnel were able to evacuate the thousands in attendance in an orderly manner and without incident. Many were annoyed at the inconvenience and expressed their regret about not being able to see the show, but the crowd has remained orderly up to this point.

  • HTC HD2 extended battery with kick stand coming next month

    htchd2extendedbattery Picture via AreaMobile.de

Clove has announced some more information regarding accessories for the HTC HD2, which they call the most popular HTC device of 2009.

Of particular interest to me is the HTC HD2 Extended Battery (HTC-EBATHD2), which they expect to arrive in February 2010 and which promises to double battery life.

What really has me interested however is the kick stand which comes integrated, something which I often miss when I contemplate using the device for watching a YouTube video. The larger battery capacity should also help make this less of risk to the device lasting the day if used that way.

Whether this design touch is worth the pricy £52.88 the official extended battery will cost is however certainly debatable.

Read more about the other accessories available and coming to the HTC HD2 here.

  • ASLA Launches New Sustainable Landscapes Online Showcase

ASLA has unveiled the first iteration of “Designing Our Future: Sustainable Landscapes,” which highlights real-life examples of sustainable landscape design and its positive effects on the environment and quality of life. These spaces use natural systems to clean the air and water, restore habitats, create healthy communities, and ultimately provide significant economic, social, and environmental value.

Beginning with 10 case studies that range from multi-acre master plans and housing communities to streetscapes and backyards, the Web site illustrates just what sustainable landscapes are and how they provide important benefits on a variety of scales. In the process, the case studies, written in clear, understandable language, also introduce users to what exactly landscape architects do. Some examples include the High Line Park in New York City; the Sustainable Comprehensive Plan to rebuild Greensburg, Kansas, following a devastating tornado; and the “Crack Garden,” which shows how a little inspiration and a jackhammer can transform a residential courtyard.

With the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, new case studies and educational features will be added to the site throughout the year. The site will also serve as a teaching tool during National Landscape Architecture Month this April.

  • Toyota issues new voluntary recall for sticking accelerator pedals, 2.3 million vehicles affected

Toyota has announced a new voluntary recall of approximately 2.3 million vehicles to correct “sticking accelerator pedals” on eight specific Toyota models. The recall includes late model versions of the RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tundra and Sequoia (follow the jump for the list of vehicles including model years). This recall is entirely separate from the one Toyota announced last September, its largest ever at approximately 4.2 million vehicles, involving “pedal entrapment” by floor mats that could cause unintended acceleration. That said, about 1.7 million vehicles out there on the roads are involved in both recalls, though no Lexus or Scion models are involved in the one announced today.

This particular recall addresses complaints by Toyota customers who have experienced unintended acceleration not caused by floor mats jamming the accelerator pedal down. In these cases, which Toyota says are rare, the pedal mechanism could be worn and “become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.”

A class action law suit filed against the automaker last November alleges that Toyota has known about this problem for four years and received 2,000 complaints. It also alleges that sticking accelerator pedals have resulted in 16 deaths and 243 injuries.

Last week, Automotive News reported that Toyota will also begin installing brake override systems in its vehicles beginning with the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES350. These systems would force the engine into idle if they detected the driver was trying to apply the brakes unsuccessfully. With two large recalls and the introduction of brake override systems, Toyota may have finally covered all the bases when it comes to possible causes and solutions for its vehicles potentially taking off on their own. The court of public opinion, however, will decide if it could have moved more quickly doing so.

  • Liza Minnelli Joins “Ugly Betty” As Drama Teacher Lena Korvinka

In news that will make the gays go gaga, FOX News’ 411 Column has learned that entertainment legend Liza Minnelli will be joining the cast of Ugly Betty later this season.

Industry informants say the campy Cabaret star has inked a deal for a recurring role as Lena Korvinka, Justin Suarez’s (Mark Indelicato) high school drama teacher.

Liza has reportedly postponed her scheduled knee replacement surgery so that she can continue shooting through Feb. 12. And the cast — which features America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams — couldn’t be more excited to have her on board.

“There were massive rumors last year, then again in early January that Liza was being courted for the show, but Liza originally hadn’t planned to do the show,” an insider close to production on the ABC dramedy revealed Thursday. “Ugly Betty producers presented her with a great offer and a hilarious story and they kept coming back to her. She’s going to be playing an outrageous drama teacher and it is going to be fun! Liza is excited to be playing another off-the-wall character like Lucille 2 on ‘Arrested Development.’”

No word just yet on Liza’s first airdate.
