  • Flu still making its way through Bulls

LOS ANGELES — John Salmons has rejoined the Bulls, but skipped the morning shootaround to sleep at the team hotel. Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng are feeling better. And Brad Miller also missed the shootaround and, like Salmons, will be a gametime decision.

That’s the summary of Flu Fest 2010 as the bug is making its way through the Bulls on the front end of a season-high, seven-game trip.

Salmons and assistant athletic trainer Jeff Tanaka arrived here Tuesday night after Salmons stayed overnight Monday at an Oakland hospital with the flu.

“He’s sick and trying to get his energy back,” coach Vinny Del Negro said. “We’re trying to get some food in him. He was sleeping when we left. We’ll see how he feels at the game. If he feels strong enough, we’ll try to get him some minutes.”

But Del Negro conceded even if Salmons does play, his minutes likely would be reduced.

Miller is the latest casualty with the virus, which claimed Kirk Hinrich in Monday’s loss at Golden State. Hinrich said at the team shootaround that he still feels light after losing about 10 pounds but that his energy is slowly returning.

“It’s tough,” Del Negro said. “You can’t control that stuff. You just have to go with the guys who are healthy and try to find a way on the road. We need much better effort than we had at Golden State.”

  • Teen sues former teacher charged with sexual assault

A south suburban teen is suing a former teacher who is already charged criminally with sexually assaulting the boy.

Claiming “emotional distress, the teen — who identified himself only as “John Doe” — filed suit in Cook County Circuit on Tuesday against the Rich Township High School District 227 and former teacher Sarah L. Tolzien. He’s seeking at least $50,000 for what the suit calls “intentional infliction of severe emotional distress.”

The suit stems from November 2008 when the Rich South High School teacher, then 24, allegedly had sex twice with the boy, then 16.

Tolzien resigned the following December after being placed on administrative leave.

The Arlington Heights woman was charged criminally with felony sexual assault in connection with the case.

Authorities said the sexual encounters happened Nov. 14 and 17, when Tolzien drove the boy home from school. Tolzien, a language arts teacher, also coached the boys varsity cross-country team, and the boy was a member of the team, police said.

A school district official couldn’t immediately be reached for comment, and a man who answered the phone at Tolzien’s home said she wasn’t available for comment.

The teen’s attorney said he’s still in school but receiving counseling.

“He’s trying to get on with his life but this is an incident that could have far-reaching consequences — beyond what he thinks now. He’s very young,” said Loop attorney Jeffrey S. Deutschman.

  • “CrisisCamp” Hacker Session Planned in Cambridge to Help Haiti

    Crisis Commons logo
    Wade Roush wrote:

Crisis Commons, a non-governmental organization formed last year to apply information technology to disaster management and humanitarian relief efforts, will mount a “CrisisCamp” session for Boston-area developers this Saturday in Cambridge. It’s the second weekend in a row the group has organized such sessions; similar camps took place last weekend in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and other cities.

“The goal is to bring together a large group of volunteers from the technical community—at varying levels of technical proficiency—to collaborate on technology projects that aim to assist in Haiti’s relief efforts by providing data, information, maps, and technical assistance to NGOs, relief agencies, and the public,” says Liz Campbell, vice president at Cambridge-based Fama PR, which is assisting Crisis Commons with publicity around the event. Previous CrisisCamp sessions have produced digital maps of Haiti to help relief groups coordinate rescue operations and a Creole-to-English dictionary for the iPhone and other smartphones.

Travel reservation software company ITA Software is hosting the session, which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. this Saturday, January 23. At press time, there was still room for at least 60 participants. For detailed information about the event, see this CrisisCommons wiki page, and to sign up to participate, go to this Eventbrite registration page. • Rachel Uchitel Birthday Party Cancelled

“Celebrity Socialite” Rachel Uchitel isn’t happy about the media attention surrounding her Palm Beach birthday bash, so she’s pulling the plug on the shindig.

Rachel, a 9/11 widow and New York City nightclub hostess, was the first women linked to Tiger Woods in the sportsman serial sex scandal late last year. Her 35th birthday party had been planned for Jan. 29 at Florida hotspot 251 PB, but Uchitel decided to can the festivites after a flyer promoting the event made its way online last week.

“The media attention was unexpected and unwelcome and for that reason the planned party at a club will not take place,” Uchitel’s lawyer, Gloria Allred, said Wednesday.

  • Mundelein man gets 40 years for molesting children

A Mundelein man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Tuesday for molesting four girls over several years.

Raul Cortez-Melo was facing a maximum sentence of 45 years during the hearing before Lake County Circuit Judge John Phillips.

Assistant State’s Attorney James Newman said Cortez-Melo repeatedly raped four girls, all between the ages of 11 and 16, between 2003 and his arrest last year.

Cortez-Melo, 37, pleaded guilty in July to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Newman asked Phillips to impose the maximum sentence, calling Cortez-Melo “a parent’s worst nightmare.”

Assistant Public Defender Katherine Hatch asked for the minimum sentence of 18 years, saying her client had been molested himself as a child and began abusing alcohol at the age of 10.

Cortez-Melo asked for leniency in the sentence and said he would like to be sent to a prison where he can receive sex offender and substance abuse treatment.

Newman said Cortez-Melo will have to serve 85 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for parole and, because he is a citizen of Mexico, is likely to face deportation when his sentence is complete.

  • Audi A3 TDI getting 4th quarter Super Bowl ad featuring Cheap Trick

Audi A3 TDI – Click above for high-res image gallery

For the third year in a row, Audi will be running an add during the Superbowl. First there was the Godfather parody where the “Old Luxury” dude was put on notice about the R8 (which is a sports car, but who cares). Then last year’s really excellent Jason Statham spot called, “Chase.” This year things are going to be a bit, well, more rocking.

Ditching the notion of parodying films, Audi is instead employing the talents of the ageless (though quite well aged) rockers in Cheap Trick to promote the A3 TDI. The ad will focus on the diesel A3 being named Green Car Journal’s Car of the Year. In it, Cheap Trick will be reinterpreting one of their classics and the spot should sport a, “fun, tongue-in-cheek environmental theme.” Any guesses as to which song? We’re thinking “He’s a Whore.” Make the jump to read the press release.

  • Mrs. Charles Darwin’s Recipe Book

At first glance this title may confuse you, but you don’t need to rub your eyes because the title means exactly what it says. It’s the culmination of the recipes Charles Darwin’s wife made for him on a regular basis. Ever wonder what scientists, philosophers, and artists were eating when they came up with their masterpieces? Well this is your chance to find out, at least about Darwin.

The book itself is beautiful and the recipes are comprised of hearty comfort foods. There is also a great historical introduction not only about the Darwin’s, but about the times. Eating during the Victorian Era was limited and not as luxurious as it is today. This means that recipes are simple and comprised of accessible foods.

For example, Mrs. Darwin’s French Ragout of Mutton recipe is basic, hearty, and oh so good.

Duck Stew with Turnips French Food

    Ingredients:

    Ragout

    1/2 tablespoon flour

    Salt and pepper

1 1/2 pounds (700 g) lamb chump (the hind end of the loin), boned, fat trimmed, and cut into generous pieces

    1 teaspoon sugar

1 cup (250 ml) water or stock

    Butter for frying

    1 sprig parsley, chopped

    Turnips

1 pound (450 g) young turnips, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch dice

    Butter for frying

    Preperation:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F

    1. Season the flour with salt and pepper and place in a plastic bag with the pieces of lamb. Holding the bag closed, give it a good shake so the meat gets coated with the flour.

    2. Melt the butter in an ovenproof dish with a lid. Add the lamb and fry over medium heat, turning the pieces so they get evenly browned.

    3. Pour in the water or stock and stir, making sure any sticky bits from the bottom of the pan are brought into the sauce. Bring to a boil, add the sugar lump, and simmer for 1-2 minutes.

    4. Put on the lid and bake for about 40-minutes. Test the meat with a knife to see if tender. If not, give it another 10-15 minutes.

    5. Taste and add more salt and pepper, if needed. Sprinkle generously with chopped parsley.

    6. About 20 minutes before serving, melt a good lump of butter in a large frying pan. Add the diced turnips in a single layer and fry them over medium heat, moving and turning them about so they brown but do not burn. Season with a little salt and pepper and serve with the lamb.

    ***

Maybe if you eat these recipes, you too may come up with something monumental. Maybe, just maybe!

    Cheers!

  • Verizon — Who Promised Not To Do This — Says It’s Kicking Accused File Sharers Off The Internet [Update: Or… Maybe Not]

This one seems odd. Verizon is among the few ISPs that has vehemently spoken out against RIAA demands that it kick file sharers offline. When the RIAA announced that it was cutting back on lawsuits to work with ISPs, Verizon was the first to loudly proclaim that it would not participate. And this wasn’t a huge surprise, given that Verizon was actually the only major ISP to fight the RIAA, back when the RIAA simply demanded names of file sharers without a court order. And yet… according to a Verizon spokesperson, the company has now started kicking accused file sharers off of its network. It’s no secret that Verizon had started to pass along RIAA letters, but actually cutting off users without any court order or any proof beyond an IP address is a huge and extremely dangerous step. I’m hoping that this Verizon spokesperson misspoke, because otherwise Verizon may be facing a pretty massive backlash. Update: Aaaaaaaaaaaaand, let the backtracking commence. Verizon is apparently now claiming (to Broadband Reports) that it was all an exaggeration and that Verizon only said that it “reserved the right” to kick users off:

I’m not aware that we’ve ever terminated anyone’s account for excessive consumption, although we reserve the right to do so. Verizon has no bandwidth caps. That part of the CNET story is wrong. I did not say “we’ve cut people off.” I said we reserve the right to do so.

Update 2: And, again, Broadband Reports comes through. It has a new update with Verizon now claiming that, no, it has never kicked anyone off its network for file sharing accusations. It might want to tell its spokespeople that for future reference.

  • Brooke Mueller Hospitalized With Tooth Infection

Brooke Mueller, the wife of Charlie Sheen, has been hospitalized in Los Angeles, her lawyers have confirmed. Mueller was admitted to intensive care on Tuesday night after falling ill with a 105-degree fever following surgery on her wisdom teeth earlier this week.

Brooke’s health woes come as she prepares to face husband Charlie in court in Aspen, Colorado, at a hearing that was previously delayed due to her wisdom tooth surgery. The Two And A Half Men star was arrested for allegedly assaulting Brooke at knifepoint during a Christmas Day dispute in The Rockies.

“Brooke is in the hospital ICU related to the surgery for her impacted wisdom tooth,” Yale Galanter, Brooke’s attorney, said in a release Wednesday afternoon. “They are trying to get the infection and fever under control. The infection has spread.”

Despite a protective order, which bars him from communicating with his estranged wife – Sheen reportedly showed up at the hospital to check on Mueller’s condition. The couple, who married in 2008 and have 9 month-old twin boys, are due back in court in Aspen on Friday, when Sheen will ask for the lifting of a restraining order that prohibits him from having contact with his wife.

  • Navy initiates green development policies

    From Green Right Now Reports

    Photo: Navy.org

    Photo: Navy.org

With 40 installations in the Chesapeake Bay watershed alone, the United States Navy has an enormous  environmental impact on the region. New construction and regular improvements of existing  facilities pose a major challenge in terms of limiting damage to the local ecosystem.

Development in the region is increasing the number of impervious surfaces (roofs, driveways, parking lots, etc.) at a rate four times greater than population growth. As a result, stormwater runoff has become a major threat in terms of polluting the Bay.

The Navy has developed a low-impact policy aimed at maintaining or restoring pre-development hydrology. Using a combination of vegetation and retention devices, stormwater is managed at the source rather than allowing the water to travel downstream.

The overall goal: No net increase in stormwater volume or sediment and nutrient loading from new projects.

Those low-impact efforts are part of a broader Sustainable Infrastructure Program currently being implemented. The program serves to integrate environmental stewardship into all energy programs, asset management, capital improvements and public works management.

Recently, a parking lot at Naval Station Norfolk capped a waste disposal area and now bio-filters stormwater. Implementation of all major contruction projects will require low-impact techniques by 2011.

The 2010 Astra is one nice-looking hatch, and the good people at Opel are going to great lengths to show the world their five-door accomplishment. The latest example of Astra pride comes in the form of a two-and-a-half minute short that plays off of the clever nature of the Oceans movies starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

If you haven’t seen any of the Oceans trilogy, each film centers around a Las Vegas casino and a gang of crafty crooks that take the owner for everything he has. All three films are edited with quick cuts and multiple clips showing at the same time. The Astra TV spot also involves a Casino and some fancy editing, but the dozen or so criminals are replaced with three “agents” trying to get their hands on the plans for the world’s most expensive casino. Of course, there are also plenty of shots of the Astra highlighting features like the “Astra Eye” that can read traffic signals and headlights that turn with you.
