  • Former Indiana Attorney Sentenced in Fraud Case

INDIANAPOLIS—Brian L. Nehrig, 43, Fishers, Indiana, was sentenced to three years’ probation today by U.S. District Judge Sarah E. Barker following his guilty plea to mail fraud. This case was the result of a investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

During 2005 and 2006, Nehrig worked as a foreclosure attorney doing foreclosure work for Citifinancial. Citifinancial required Nehrig to submit a bid at sheriff’s sales for foreclosed houses, sell the houses at arm’s length transactions, and then submit the proceeds if the home sold to a third party.

Instead, Nehrig sometimes submitted inflated bids and had arrangements with friends and associates to buy the properties. Nehrig did not tell Citifinancial about the side deals, which were usually for a few thousand dollars more than the minimum bid requested by Citifinancial. Nehrig did not send Citifinancial the profits.

The Court determined the loss to Citifinancial to be $66,000. Citifinancial has been paid through an insurance claim.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Gayle L. Helart, who prosecuted the case for the government, Judge Barker also imposed six months’ home confinement, and a requirement that Nehrig perform eight hours of community service per month for each of the 36 months that he is on probation.

Nehrig was fined in the amount of $2500. Judge Barker noted that Nehrig’s law license was previously revoked and ordered that he not be self-employed and give full disclosure of this felony conviction to any future employer.

  • Review Netbook Acer Aspire 1410

    Graficos: Intel GMA 4500MHD
    Memoria: 2GB DDR2 667 (2 x 1GB)
Disco Rigido: 160GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue 5400 RPM – 8 MB Cache
Comunicacion: Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
    Intel(R) WiFi Link 1000 BGN
    Expansion / Conectividad: 3 x USB, 1 x VGA, 1 x HDMI, 1 x Headphone/Speaker/Line-Out Jack, 1 x Microphone-in Jack
    Bateria: 6-celdas Li-ion (4400 mAh) (duracion de 4 a 5 horas)
Lector de Tarjetas: SD, MMC, MS, MS PRO, xD
    Touchpad: Multitactil

    Puntos a Favor:

Rendimiento (procesador de doble núcleo, gráfica)
    Pantalla 11,6 pulgadas (1366 x 768) con buen brillo
Salida HDMI y posibilidad de reproducir contenido HD
    Buena calidad de construccion
    Muy Ligera 1,4kg
    Totalmente inaudible
    Teclado superior a cualquier netbook
    Wifi Draft N
    Precio

    Puntos en Contra:

Volumen de los altavoces muy bajos
Mucho software innecesario de serie de parte de Acer
El touchpad no se diferencia mucho al relieve del resto del netbook
A pesar de tener el indicador no trae bluetooth

Lincoln Town Car turned Rolls-Royce Hearse – Click above for high-res image gallery

In this situation you might think we’d be at a loss for words. However, a Lincoln Town Car hearse cut to look like a Rolls-Royce Phantom gets our little fingers fluttering. Sadly, most of what we want to type isn’t fit for print. At least the seller’s description provides a good deal of comic… something. Have a look:

“Here it is! Open the doors to one of the most money making industries. The funeral business. I had a customer tell me that I should do a RR Hearse. It took me about a year to do it but I am so glad I did. The first funeral we did, the owner of that funeral home was so impressed with the reaction from his customers that he wanted to buy it from me. I did not want to sell it because I have 3 funeral homes wanting to book it almost every day. And they not only book the hearse but they also now book the 6 pack limo for the family from us.”

Fair enough. We suppose money is one possible explanation for this sort of you-ain’t-fooling-no-one creation is filthy lucre. In fairness, it does possess one killer app. You ever seen a funeral procession going down the street and think to yourself, “I wonder what sex that corpse is?” Wonder no more, as this hearse has blue fog lights for boy stiffs, and pink ones for the (dead) ladies. Here’s some more from the seller:

“We went from not doing funerals to doing almost 3 to 5 funerals per week and at $395.00 per 4 hr. funeral for the hearse and $395.00 for the 6 pack limo! You do the math. The other great thing is that 90% of funerals are Monday through Friday. They don’t get drunk, no trashing the limo and they are done by mid day. And if they do go over, then it is an aditional $95 per car, per hr.”

Straight boo ya! Doing the math, that’s nearly $800 per funeral. Pure profit, man. Except for the little part about who in their right mind would want to go to their grave in this thing?!? Oh, and in case you thought a fake Roller is the only hearse your fledgling business will need, click immediately to the back of the gallery to see some more phonies. Finally, in a perverse way we’re stoked we finally found a Town Car worse than this one.

“Nothing is worse than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.” I wonder if Wayne D. Puff, who ran a huge Ponzi scheme from 1998 through 2005, ever felt that. Last week in New Jersey he was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $100 million in restitution after his company (New Jersey Affordable Homes) accepted $123 million from investors, attracted to the annual returns of 15-20% from his business of buying, renovating and reselling real estate, using the time-honored tradition of fudging applications, having appraisers pump up values, and flipping properties.

In more “great” news items is news like the kind that is issued by market researcher RealtyTrac, which stated that 2.8 million US properties had foreclosure filings in 2009 in spite of legislative and industry-related delays and loan modifications. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to wind down its MBS purchase program at the end of the first quarter, and tax incentives will expire at the end of April. Many markets still have too many houses for sale and too few buyers, and of course tight underwriting guidelines don’t help the supply & demand issue as appraisers continue to struggle to confirm sales prices. That being said, many markets are seeing stable prices and continued solid interest, especially on the low end.

What do Federal Home Loan Banks do all day besides issue research? They also do a few workshops and many are free. For example, the San Francisco Bank is hosting 2010 WISH and IDEA workshops on the 25th for loans for the first-time homebuyer matching grant programs. “Both programs can also complement or supplement a myriad of local, state, and federal programs and initiatives.” E-mail [email protected] with questions, or register at www.fhlbsf.com

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) does more than insure deposits and close troubled banks. On January 29th the FDIC will host a day-long symposium to discuss issues and strategies available to financial institutions for managing their exposures to interest rate risk (IRR). “With a historically steep yield curve and low short-term interest rates, it’s vital for institutions to have robust processes for measuring and mitigating risks posed by potential changes in rates.” Speaking will be Federal Reserve Board of Governors Vice Chairman Donald Kohn and PIMCO CEO Mohamed El-Erian. If you’re around the FDIC’s Arlington, Virginia facility that day, check it out. RSVP to Greg Hernandez in the FDIC Office of Public Affairs at [email protected] or to request an invitation, please contact N. Michelle Rose at [email protected].

How about some common sense legal RESPA information? The Prieston Group is hosting a January 21st teleconference that will cover RESPA from the point of view a regulatory law firm concentrating on laws and issues pertaining to mortgage brokers and their consumers. “If you have any questions about how to put the new rules into practice, what must be disclosed, or would like to walk through a particular scenario that you’ve encountered send your questions to [email protected] and we will be sure to include them on the teleconference.” Write to Mary Gamble if you’re interested in the class: [email protected]

  • Roush to offer upgrades for 2011 Ford Mustang GT in April

Roush Performance announced today that it will offer its Stage 1 and Stage 2 packages for the 2011 Ford Mustang GT in April.

“Using the new Ford 5.0-Liter, V-8 engine, both of these cars will have 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. or torque, all while reaching an estimated 25 highway miles per gallon of fuel economy,” Roush said in a statement. “Also new for the 2011 model year is the standard six-speed transmission, something that Mustang fans have clamored for over the past several years.”

The Stage 1 package will consist of aesthetic changes such as the addition of the OEM-quality ROUSH body kit, while Stage 2 will offer suspension and handling upgrades in addition to appearance upgrades.

“The 2011 ROUSH® Stage 1™ and Stage 2™ Mustangs will represent an incredible value by blending appearance and handling with an amazing base Ford engine package,” said Jack Roush. “I expect that the 2011 Stage 1™ and Stage 2™ ROUSH® Mustangs could come close to matching the performance of some ROUSHcharged™ Mustangs we have offered in prior model years which will make them extremely exciting to drive and at a reasonable starting price point.”

For power upgrades, the Roush 427R engineering team is already working on producing a ROUSHcharger for the 2011 model year. Those packages won’t be offered until late summer.

  • A Third of Adults Now Post to Sites Like Facebook, Twitter Once a Week [Voices]

By Jennifer Valentino, Reporter, The Wall Street Journal

A third of adults online are now using the Web for “quick conversations,” posting updates on sites like Facebook and Twitter at least once a week.

The ranks of these networkers, dubbed “conversationalists” in a report released today by Forrester Research, have grown in the past couple of years. They’re mostly women, and they aren’t only young people — 70 percent of the adults in this category are 30 and older. (The report looked only at people 18 and over, so the youngest users aren’t included.)

Although Twitter might seem to be the most likely outlet for these conversationalists, Forrester’s surveys “indicate that there are actually even more people conversing this way through Facebook.”

Audi MMI with Google Earth and handwriting input – Click above view the video after the jump

Audi isn’t the first to add Google to its in-car information offerings. It is, however, the first to add Google Earth and then tie that in to a suite of mobile tools that will make using your navigation system almost as easy and comprehensive as using your home computer.

In the latest incarnation of Audi’s Multimedia Interface (MMI), Google Earth provides a bird’s-eye view of the surroundings. Then you can zoom over the landscape, choose a city to investigate and pull up its Wikipedia page. When you know where you want to go, let your finger do the typing on the touchpad to enter your destination. Follow the jump for a video of the system in action. The new A8 just got a little bit sweeter.

  • GM wooing current Pontiac owners with free service

When General Motors put Oldsmobile out to pasture, many owners defected from GM brands all-together. In an effort to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself with soon to be displaced Pontiac owners, the General is extending an olive branch in the form of a year of free maintenance.

Automotive News reports that GM is offering four years of free service visits – including oil changes and tire rotations – to specific BuickGMC dealerships for owners of 1999 and newer Pontiac vehicles. Brian Sweeney, general manager of Buick-GMC, told AN that the plan is to “to keep the relationship with the Buick-GMC dealer.” Customers will be given specific Buick-GMC dealers to utilize for the free service in order to help the dealers develop a relationship with said customer in hopes that they will use that dealership to purchase future products.

A potential problem with the plan is that Pontiac and Buick/GMC models aren’t exactly in the same price range, though (potential) future products like the Buick Excelle and the GMC Granite concept could be priced competitively enough to keep some Pontiac owners in the GM family.

With new service customers on the way, we’re sure the Buick-GMC dealers are excited about this program. Many Buick-GMC dealers used to sell Pontiacs as well, so many of the brand’s former customers won’t even have to go to a new dealer to cash in on the free maintenance.

  • Analyst: Zune Phone coming in next two months

Jefferies & Company analyst Katherine Egbert told her clients last night that Redmond is getting ready to launch a phone based on Windows Mobile 7. “Our recent industry checks indicate Microsoft will be debuting its own phone sometime in the next two months,” Egbert said. “We expect the new phone to debut soon, at either the Feb 15-18 Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona Spain, or possibly at CTIA in Las Vegas one month later.”

Egbert says the company is “partnering with a few OEM manufacturers,” similar to what Google has done with the Nexus One, to create a Zune-like phone which will have 720p HD video capabilities, at least a 5MP camera, and that will run Windows Mobile 7. She also notes that Windows Mobile 7 will include “premium mobile services,” including a Zune video store and music subscription and purchasing services. It will have an interface “similar” to the Zune HD UI, “and could include social networking apps like Xbox Live, Facebook and Twitter,” she writes. “We don’t have any information about the cost of the Pink phone, nor do we know what service providers might be partnered with Microsoft,” she admitted.

“Revenue from the phone is also very unlikely to be meaningful for many years,” she believes. Her reasoning for the phone is a little odd though. “However, the new phone might explain why Microsoft has allowed WinMo to dwindle to less than 10 percent mobile OS market share. Pink would be the ‘third screen’ (after Windows and Xbox) and [the] final component in Microsoft’s ‘3 screens and a cloud’ strategy.”

If she’s right, Microsoft would be fulfilling the dreams of Zune fans, Windows Mobile fans, and many others who have been waiting for Microsoft to counter Apple’s iPhone with its own software and hardware combination, as opposed to just a new version of its mobile OS. Speculation and rumors about a secretive effort known as Project Pink to develop a Microsoft-branded handset have been around for many, many months.

The tidbits mentioned by the analyst have a strong resemblance to recent rumors about a media edition of Windows Mobile 7 that has “Microsoft Zune Phone Experience,” and supposedly features HD video, a Zune-like music player, and streaming media, as well as Silverlight, Mediaroom, Xbox Live (possibly gameplay), Facebook and Twitter interfaces (similar to Xbox), and Zune Music integration. The media edition doesn’t refer to a single “Zune Phone” though, and the latest rumors say it’s coming in 2011.

Each time rumors about a Zune Phone spring up, Microsoft is quick to knock them down, insisting that it is only interested in the mobile OS business, not competing with hardware manufacturers. Officially, the company insists that releasing its own branded smartphone would be contrary to its strategy of offering just the operating system to a number of partners who then provide various hardware options so that consumers can have a myriad of devices to choose from. Earlier this month, Microsoft Entertainment and Devices President Robbie Bach bashed Google for its move with the Nexus One, saying that handset makers may fear the company will prioritize its own product over theirs and ditch Android as a result.

  • ConanOnFox.com Prompts Speculation About O’Brien’s Future

FOX has fueled speculation that it will sign exiting Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien to be its new face of late night after the network registered a domain name for the site ConanOnFox.com this week, E! News claims.

As of Tuesday, the site redirects users to a Twitter page which reads “Conan on FOX.”

FOX and its basic cable sister network have previously declared an interest in hiring the presenter for a late-night program in the wake of his recent fallout with NBC. O’Brien is reportedly brokering a deal that could pay the Boston native between $30-$40 million to leave the network and his post at The Tonight Show, allowing Jay Leno to move back to late night TV after a failed jaunt in primetime. Sources tell TMZ that the funnyguy is determined to look out for members of his Tonight Show team and is working to secure severance deals for his entire staff. Under Conan’s current separation agreement, he would have to wait until September before beginning another show on a competing network.

  • Report: Caterham to reveal electric plans within six months

Caterham’s boss Ansar Ali has told AutoCar that the company plans on revealing its plans to go electric within six months. Ali said that Caterham is talking to several parties that are interested in working with the company.

“We’re trying to pull together some partners and there a lot who want to be associated with us,” he told the publication. “We want to do this properly and with the right partners, not just stick batteries in the back of a Seven.”

He said that the Caterham team still has to be convinced that an electric powertrain could work in its vehicles and that it would be up to its partners to convince them otherwise. Ali said that Caterham has no plans to produce a road-going electric-car and that any initial electric Caterham vehicle would be a racing car.

“We have no plans to produce an electric Seven,” he said. “We’re looking at motorsport applications but there’s uncertainty as to whether an electric car could handle race conditions.”

  • Solar salvation for Haiti?

    The Haitian Project

A volunteer washes the dust from last week’s earthquake in Haiti off a solar array
at Louverture Cleary School, north of Port-au-Prince, to maximize power production.

Donors are gearing up to send cell phones, streetlights, water purification systems and even audio Bibles to earthquake-hit Haiti. The bad news is that the country’s power infrastructure is on the ropes, but the good news is that these particular gadgets are solar-powered. Haiti happens to be one of the countries in the world best-suited for solar power.

In the long run, that just might help the country survive. But in the short run, even solar power isn’t immune to earthquakes. Over the past week, the people and the pieces of equipment that make the technology work have literally been pulled out of the rubble in Port-au-Prince and its environs.

  • Why in the name of all that is wonderful would you want a slate with a 5″ screen?

    magdell
Dell debuted some sort of slate product at CES. At first I was intrigued, and then someone told me the size. Five inch screen. Five inches, people. That’s one and a half inches more than an iPhone. Take your thumbs and index fingers and make a little window with them — you know, like a photographer or director does. That’s about five inches if your hands are at all like mine. Consuming any real amount media- and text-rich content on a device that size sounds about as pleasant as eating glass.

Others, too, are bringing knives to the gun fight. Asus has a 6-inch, full-color e-book reader (why?), and HP is of course collaborating on a medium-sized, mundane tablette with Microsoft, which itself has apparently left the Courier, a genuinely innovative product, on a drawing board somewhere. Haven’t these guys heard of Archos and Viliv? There are already MIDs out there that do essentially what these allegedly next-generation devices are supposed to. The iSlate supposedly has a 10.6-inch screen. Did the competition really think half that would be enough?

Check out this handy little size chart I made. I used the scale 100px/inch along the dotted line; with my DPI, that’s about life-size when you blow it up, but you get the idea:
    sizes_s

I’m not sure exactly what the draw is to small-screen devices like this. With phones and PMPs, the idea is that you operate them like an iPod: in your palm, with your thumb or the index finger of your other hand. Usually there is one point of contact, so UIs are designed around that. Multi-touch is in the process of becoming mainstream, so there’s a change to look for in those devices. But tablets and slates aren’t PMPs. They aren’t phones. The idea is that they are complete PCs without keyboards. I mentioned Viliv and Archos: their tiny PCs are capable, but even the best MIDs have cramped screens and input trouble. Optical track nubbins? Stylii? You’ll never break through with that kind of anti-fun going on with your device. Remember OQO? Beautiful devices, no sales.

What exactly a tablet is will be, for better or worse, defined when Apple puts theirs out. I don’t suggest that theirs will be all things to all people, but for lack of credible competition it’s going to set the bar (and set it high, if we’re lucky). Other tablet-like products out there — convertibles, Windows 7 tablets, MIDs, high-end smartphones — either shrunk the desktop OS or added some functionality to a mobile one. So you’ve got a TG02 with a nice big 4″ screen (it’s gorgeous) — is that a tablet because it’s bigger than any other smartphone? No, it runs WinMo. Similarly, is a 6″ MID running XP a tablet? No, because XP and its applications aren’t tablet-friendly; maybe 7 is more so, but it’s still a desktop OS at heart.

Imagine the difference between using a stylus to simulate a mouse-driven cursor on an OS where corners are the most accessible UI elements and pixel precision is assumed, and using your fingers to manipulate objects with natural gestures. That, after all, was the primary UI difference between the iPhone and other mobile OSes. Microsoft’s Surface team contributed a lot of touch elements to Windows 7, but it’s still designed by and large for a mouse. Compare that to the 10/GUI concept, or even Chrome OS, which seems much more susceptible to multi-touch adaptation. And I should add that even with a tailored UI, a 6-inch screen is going to require a lot of zooming in and out. I don’t enjoy doing that, and neither do you. Why would you want a device that continues this troublesome tradition?

But it’s the form factor, you say! It doesn’t matter if the OS was made for the tablet as long as you can sit on the couch and check your blogs without a keyboard. To some extent, yes — but it’s a bit like cutting your food with a spoon, isn’t it? I imagine the caveman, saying “But fire not necessary! Mammoth meat delicious raw!” To him I say: taste the grilled mammoth first, sir, and then decide.

True, content providers have adjusted their content to be accessible by mobile devices — and we all know how tiring it is to read more than a page or two of the Times on an iPhone, and how arbitrarily limited apps for certain web services are. That crippled content will still be offered for mobiles and MIDs, but true tablets/slates (of which Apple’s may be the first) will have a separate, richer stream that relies on the increases in the device’s input options, screen real estate, and computing power. As I noted above, it’s not enough to shrink or grow existing UIs or OSes: all you end up with is ten pounds of OS in a five pound bag, or vice versa.

    10gui2

When I say Apple will define the tablet, I mean that literally: it’s going to create definition. It’s actually much the same as with the iPhone: a stagnant device class with lots of potential, weighed down by traditional UI and input elements. Apple comes in like Alexander and cuts the Gordian Knot, defining an entirely different experience that resonates with consumers. Apple didn’t create the smartphone, but smartphones are now defined in terms of the iPhone.

The field is a little fresher with tablets, of course: it’s not as big of a market and the stagnation is largely due to technical limitations only now being overcome. And there will be real competition as well; Google-branded Chrome OS tablets are probably going to come out later this year along with laptops, which will be cheaper and less media-oriented. But at any rate, it looks like they are among very few companies offering an experience substantially different from MIDs of the past — an experience people might actually pay for.

The point is that the big guys, unless they’ve really improved their poker face recently, have started out on the wrong foot — and they’re about to take one in the jaw when Apple drops a tablet that is not only larger and sexier but far more usable than the toys Microsoft and Dell think people will want. If they can’t learn to take risks with major departures from UI and design establishments, they shouldn’t be surprised if they get left in the dust.

  • When Your Funding is Your Worst Enemy

funding_problem_jan10.jpgOne of the biggest tests of startup founder savvy is the period after you’ve just raised funding. It’s akin to the Amish rite of passage rumspringa, as young and sometimes inexperienced founders are given the opportunity to explore new opportunities in the hopes that the experience will ground them and strengthen them as leaders. Unfortunately, many do not find their way back to the path of revenue, or even to a product roadmap.

    Sponsor

Funding is often sought out to scale up a product, but it can also be your worst nightmare. If there’s one thing we learned from the dot com bust, it’s that you should be looking for your revenue model before building the in-office climb wall or partying on luxury yachts. Silicon Valley business lawyer George Grellas explains, “In early-stage companies, you will regret such spending when you hit the bumps in the road where you wish you had that cash. Inevitably, you will hit such bumps. Plan accordingly.”

money_funding_jan10.jpgThis funding problem isn’t so much about founders not knowing about free web apps to run their everyday business or the cost savings of an elastic workforce and cloud services. This funding problem is one where a ramen profitable company has just been given what it believes to be a blank check. Funding is not a blank check, it’s a promise to get the company to an agreed upon milestone in the hopes that the value of the business will grow. If the value of the business grows, investors, cofounders and hopefully early employees will benefit.

The sooner you hit your milestones (if the business model and product roadmap are correct), the less likely you are to have to issue more stock and give more of the company away. In other words, the less you waste on luxury items, the more likely everyone you work with is going to get paid. Retain your staff with decent pay, good machines and a comfortable chair, but let them know what they stand to gain by hitting the milestones.

Every successful entrepreneur will tell you to spend where you know you’ll see a return on investment – the right business development mix, good engineers and a solid infrastructure. Remember that if you do manage to see a lucrative exit, you’ll have all the time in the world to live the high life, but for now, maintain your focus and stay as lean as possible.

If you’ve got lean startup tips, by all means leave them in the comments below. As well, cautionary tales of good money being thrown after bad are also welcome.

  • Music, Gaming, iPhone OS May Be Topics at Apple Event

With Apple saying only that it will unveil its “latest creation” at a media event in San Francisco next week, speculation about music, gaming and a new iPhone operating system is adding to the tablet buzz that has been building for weeks.

Ever since Apple last month reserved the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for Jan. 27, analysts have guessed it was time for the computer giant to roll out its version of a tablet computer. Apple CEO Steve Jobs reportedly scrapped early versions, but touchscreen advances from the iPod and iPhone seem to have paved the way for a tablet some have dubbed an iPhone on steroids.

Many industry observers expect the “latest creation” to be a multi-touch device with a 10-inch screen called the iSlate that will sell for about $1,000. That is more than three times the price of Amazon’s Kindle e-reader.

    Games and Content

When Apple invited the gaming blog Kotaku to the event, it set off speculation that the iSlate may have enhanced gaming features and be compatible with modified apps from the iPhone. The event could also mark the debut of the 4.0 edition of the iPhone operating system.

“They’ve been known to do multiple announcements, so chances are they will [unveil the new OS],” said Kirk Parsons, a telecommunications analyst at J.D. Power and Associates.

With agreements in the works between Apple and music, television and news organizations, the company could also announce new content providers for iTunes and the App Store.

“At this point, with many people projecting their own impressions onto Apple’s invitation, anything is possible,” said Interpret Vice President Michael Gartenberg. “It’s certainly within the realm of possibility that any new form of device Apple would bring to market would also include entertainment content such as games.”

  • Smartphone Pricing War Spreads To Verizon and AT&T

Wireless carriers are going head-to-head in what is turning out to be a pricing war. The two largest U.S. carriers — AT&T and Verizon Wireless — have cut subscription prices this week.

The first price reduction came from the biggest carrier, Verizon, as the New Jersey-based company cut prices for some of its plans. Beginning Monday, customers could sign up for an unlimited plan that allows calls anywhere in the U.S. for $70 a month, down from $100, or an unlimited talk and text plan for $90 a month, down from $120. Verizon also slashed prices for its family plans, making unlimited talk $120, down from $200, and unlimited talk and text $150, down from $230.

Verizon’s 89 million existing customers are not impacted by the changes unless they want to switch. They can make the change without being penalized or having to extend their contracts.

    AT&T, Too

Just after Verizon announced the cuts last week, number-two AT&T with 82 million U.S. customers announced cuts for similar plans, also effective Monday. Instead of smartphone users, including iPhone users, paying $130 a month for AT&T’s unlimited voice and data plan, they will now pay $100. Existing users who make the switch won’t have to pay any fees or extend their contracts.

“We have twice the number of smartphone customers as our nearest competitor, and our new plans reflect customers’ continuing desire to do more with their phones — including talking and browsing the web at the same time,” said Jenny Bridges, an AT&T spokesperson. “In addition, the new plans we’re offering make it even more attractive for customers to choose AT&T.”

The pricing war between the two giants comes a year after smaller wireless carriers, including Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA and Sprint Nextel’s Boost Mobile, announced lower-cost plans. T-Mobile offers unlimited voice, text and data for…

  • Microsoft Promises To Issue Out-of-Band Patch for IE

Is Microsoft Internet Explorer too dangerous to use? In the aftermath of news that hackers exploited security holes in IE to break into Google’s systems in China, the governments of France and Germany are taking the unprecedented step of recommending users stop using Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8.

Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security recommended “temporary use of alternative browsers” because of a “critical security hole” in Internet Explorer that allows hackers to remotely run malicious code on Windows PCs.

France’s CERTA agency also recommended using other browsers until Microsoft provides a patch.

    Threat Response or Damage Control?

Microsoft’s initial response was basically along the lines of, “You wanna patch? It’s called IE 8.” Microsoft provided the following statement in response to the advisories: “In regards to the recent Internet Explorer vulnerability, we have not seen successful attacks on Internet Explorer 8. As such, Microsoft continues to recommend customers upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 to benefit from its improved security protections.”

Microsoft added that it hadn’t seen successful attacks on Internet Explorer 7, either, but said that it is investigating reports that proof-of-concept code exists that exploits the vulnerability in IE7 on Vista and XP.

But apparently caving to pressure and possibly unsettled by all the hubbub, Microsoft relented Tuesday and announced it would, in fact, issue an “out-of-band” emergency security update for Internet Explorer.

On the Microsoft Security Response Center blog, George Stathakopoulos, general manager for Trustworthy Computing Security, wrote, “Given the significant level of attention this issue has generated, confusion about what customers can do to protect themselves and the escalating threat environment Microsoft will release a security update out-of-band for this vulnerability.” Stathakopoulos said details of the patch’s release would be issued Wednesday.

Microsoft normally issues patches on Patch Tuesday once a month (the next is scheduled for February 9), but occasionally jumps the…
