  • The right weight for strength training and busting belly fat

    Guest contributor: Karen Collins, M.S., R.D., C.D.N.
Karen Collins holds a B.S. degree from Purdue and an M.S. degree from Cornell, both in nutrition. When she’s not writing or speaking, she conducts a private nutrition practice in Jamestown, New York.

Q: How do I know how much weight to use for strength training?

That’s an important question. Strength training (also called weight or resistance training) strengthens muscles and bones, improves insulin function and is vital for true fitness.

Some studies suggest that many beginners start with weights too light to see benefits, which may explain why they might not stick with it. On the other hand, weights that are too heavy are not safe.

Whether we use free weights, Nautilus-type machines or elastic bands, fitness experts say that we should work with a weight or resistance that we can lift at least eight times using proper form while maintaining normal breathing.

When we can lift it more than 12 times (or perhaps more than 15 times for older or more frail people advised to use lighter weights lifted more times), it’s time to switch to weights 5 to 10 percent heavier. For overall safety and best results, proper form is extremely important, so make sure you are learning your technique from someone properly trained.

Q: Is it true that high-fiber diets reduce belly fat?

Eating plenty of high-fiber vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans may help avoid excess body fat, including belly fat, but research has not yet clearly shown whether all methods of increasing dietary fiber (including fiber supplements) necessarily reduce abdominal fat.

Waistline fat includes the pinchable fat deposited just under the skin and “visceral fat” that nestles deep around abdominal organs and seems most strongly related to risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

People who eat more whole grains are more likely to have a healthy weight and waistline than are those with diets high in refined grains. Some studies also link eating more refined grains (like white bread) with greater yearly increases in weight and waist.

Replacing refined grains and sweets with whole grains could lead to smaller surges in blood sugar and reduced insulin levels. In theory, these lower insulin levels could shift metabolic processes to favor fat burning instead of fat storage, but research has not yet proven such an effect.

If foods high in fiber fill you up faster so that you consume fewer calories, this could certainly help you lose belly fat. For this to work, of course, you need to pay attention to hunger signals and stop eating when you start to feel nearly full.

  • Dublin’s first directly elected mayor

    Quote:

Gormley says Dublin mayor election could be in June

MARY MINIHAN in Clane, Co Kildare

    Sat, Jan 16, 2010

THE GREEN Party is looking for a celebrity candidate to contest the election for a mayor of Dublin which could take place as early as June, party sources have indicated.

Speaking as the Greens held a ‘think-in’ in Clane, Co Kildare, party leader John Gormley confirmed the heads of a Bill allowing for a directly elected mayor were ready to go to Government.

“We want to ensure that goes through the House in March and that we will be in place for a June election.”

Mr Gormley said the mayor’s wages would be “on a par with a ministerial salary”.

The Greens would put forward a candidate and he hoped it would be a “high-calibre” person, he told the party’s think-in.

In private sessions, Green figures speculated that other parties would run high-profile candidates, whom they suggested could include Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell and Labour TD Ruairí Quinn.

Environmental campaigner and broadcaster Duncan Stewart is understood to have been mentioned as someone who would make a good Green candidate. It was argued that the party needed to find a candidate with a blend of political experience and profile.

Asked to comment on rumours that former taoiseach Bertie Ahern could contest, Mr Gormley said the Green Party would have its own candidate and it was up to Fianna Fáil whom it wanted to put forward.

A spokeswoman for Mr Ahern said he was unavailable for comment last night.

Mr Gormley said the Dublin mayor would have “significant powers” in relation to transport and would sit on the national transportation authority. He or she would also have responsibility for planning, housing “and a number of other areas that are of significance, particularly from a Green perspective”.

He said a framework document outlining the functions of the office would be published shortly. The London mayoralty had been used as a model, although there would be differences: the Dublin mayor would not sit on policing or education boards, for example.

“This is extremely important because for far too long we haven’t had proper local government in this country; we’ve had local administration.”

He said the Dublin mayor would “very much set the agenda for the capital” and the functions of the office would serve as a template for other regions.

Meanwhile, Mr Gormley said he was taking action to prevent what he described as the “abuse” of expenses by councillors attending conferences. City and county councillors will be limited to €4,700 a year under the new regime.

“There was an industry that had been spawned for these conferences which were not really conferences. I saw at first hand where people were simply signing in and not attending these conferences, and that’s not good enough. I mean, that is an abuse.”

Mr Gormley told the ‘think-in’ that an inquiry into what went wrong in the banking system should begin “in the first half of this year”, starting with regulation and then moving on to banking.

“It is absolutely vital that any inquiry is absolutely independent and gets to the root cause of the regulation problems and the banking problems,” Mr Gormley added

    Elected Dublin mayor ‘by June’
    By Conor Ryan
    Saturday, January 16, 2010

DUBLIN is on course to have a directly elected mayor this summer after legislation was produced to make it possible.

The heads of the bill were circulated this week and Environment Minister John Gormley expects it to be passed through the Dáil in March.

This would facilitate an election in June. And he said he already knew of parties who had approached celebrity candidates to run for the office.

He did not elaborate on which parties had made the move or who the personalities involved were.

Mr Gormley said the Mayor of Dublin will have roles in planning but will not sit on education and policing committees like its counterpart in London. Whoever is elected will be paid the same as a Cabinet minister.

However, Fine Gael’s environment spokesman Phil Hogan criticised the plan and said it was "half-baked".

He said the concept had not been thought through and electing a mayor in June, out-of-sync with other local elections, would confuse voters and depress turnout.

Mr Gormley said the London role evolved over time and accepted different responsibilities as it became more established.

The Green Party leader announced the heads of the new bill in Kildare at his parliamentary party’s think-in.

Meanwhile, rugby pundit George Hook has announced he will run for Mayor of Dublin if Bertie Ahern runs for the office.

During an interview with Labour party councillor and former Dublin Lord Mayor, Dermot Lacey, on his Newstalk show – who is seeking his party’s nomination in the mayoral election – Mr Hook announced: "If your man Bertie throws his hat in the ring for mayor I am telling you now, that I will stand on an anti-Bertie platform against him because Bertie led us into this abyss that we find ourselves in and if he runs for dog catcher I will oppose him," he said.

I would rather the mayor cover the "Greater Dublin Area" (after all, the National Transport Authority’s "Dublin" section also covers Kildare, Meath and Wicklow), with "mayors" for the rest of Leinster, Munster and Connacht-Ulster with similar powers and responsibilities. However, I welcome this regardless and hope whoever it is can make a real difference, especially within regards to public transport.

I can see Labour (very strong in Dublin City) or Fine Gael (also relatively strong in suburban areas) winning it over the other parties. I hope that Bertie Ahern doesn’t even run, never mind win, as was suggested frequently last year. :ohno:

  • HTC Espresso, aka MyTouch Slide or myTouch2, to hit T-Mobile USA in May?

    Picture-112

TmoNews is reporting on three hot new handsets that are rumored to be hitting T-Mobile in this first quarter of 2010. One handset is the HTC HD2 which was made official at CES. The second is an unknown handset from Garmin that was spotted recently at the FCC showing off its AWS band and is rumored to be launching in May. Last but not least is a handset identified as the myTouch2, also referred to as the myTouch Slide and codenamed the Espresso. Android fans will recognize that last codename has been making the rounds in the rumor mill over the past few months. It has shown up in a list of codenames from a leaked Android 2.1 ROM, will be rocking the latest version of HTC’s Sense UI and may have the same 528MHz processor found in the Hero/Magic, a QWERTY keyboard and a 320×480 display. This latest revelation now places the handset as the potential successor to the myTouch 3G with a T-Mobile launch tentatively set for May 17th. Any future Android owners out there going to pass on the Nexus One and wait on the Espresso?

  • HTC talks Windows Mobile 7, Android and China

    htcdopod

It seems its not just LG that cant keep quiet  about Windows Mobile 7.  At the launch of the HTC T8388 smartphone in Beijing the CEO of Dopod, a wholly-owned subsidiary of HTC, spoke about the difficulties Windows Mobile 7 will have in China.

Mr. Chen Jinghong noted that HTC was involved in the development of Windows Mobile 7, but that the exact release date was up to Microsoft.  The current release of Windows Mobile 7 will however not have built-in Chinese support, which is not ideal for China.  He said Dopod however still intended to release phones with the OS as soon as Microsoft officially released the OS.

He also noted that HTC intends to launch 15 smartphones in China this year, and the proportion between Windows Mobile and Android will be judged by the market itself.

HTC intended to launch their own HTC Club software store for China, primarily for their Android phones, as it was not legal to access the off-shore hosted Android marketplace from within China. He did not anticipate Google’s departure from China would have much impact on Android in the market.

  • Bahrain or Bust: Ecclestone doubts all four new F1 teams will make it

    Filed under:

    Bernie Ecclestone

Following the culmination of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship, slots were granted to four new teams for the upcoming season. They were all ecstatic about the prospect of dicing it with the likes of McLaren and Ferrari, but not all of them are guaranteed to make it when the flag waves at Bahrain in just a couple months’ time. This comes right from the mouth Bernie Ecclestone, F1’s notoriously outspoken commercial director.

Rumors have been circulating for months that at least two of the teams – USF1 and Campos Meta – were having trouble finalizing their car designs and getting their houses in order. The other two newcomers – Lotus and Virgin – have hardly been immune to the rumors, either.

Given the difficulties involved in designing, building and fielding two new cars from scratch, Ecclestone doubts all four will be ready to start the season, much less see it through to the end. Bernie’s solution would have been to allow the newcomers to purchase chassis from any of the established teams, and field just one car to start off. Good idea or not, it’s a little late at this point, so we’ll just have to sit back and see how it unfolds.

  • The Tuktoyaktuk Pingos

Canada, North America | Weird Weather Phenomena

A pingo, also called a hydrolaccolith, is a mound of earth-covered ice found in the Arctic and subarctic that can reach up to 70 metres (230 ft) in height and up to 600 m (2,000 ft) in diameter. The term originated as the Inuvialuktun word for a small hill.

In fact, a pingo is a ‘periglacial landform,’ which is defined as a nonglacial landform or process linked to colder climates. They are essentially formed by ground ice which develops during the winter months as temperatures fall. The plural form is “pingos”.

Pingos usually grow only a few centimetres per year, and the largest take decades or even centuries to form. The process that creates pingos is believed to be closely related to frost heaving.

Pingos eventually break down and collapse. The current estimate is that pingos can last about 1000 years. Tuktoyaktuk in the Mackenzie Delta has one of the highest concentrations of pingos. Other places with pingos include Alaska, Greenland, and the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. In Siberia, pingos are known as bulganniakh, from the Yakut language.

  • How The EFF Lost Its Way By Defending Hate Mongers And Tunnel Rats

Freedom of SpeechFree speech is a basic human right and is essential to creativity and innovation.  But every society places limits on this, particularly when it transgresses into “hate speech” – which disparages someone or some group on the basis of race, gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, and so on.  Calls to violence are tolerated even less.  These often lead to jail terms.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has been the tech world’s champion of free speech since its inception in 1990.  I have always admired this group for defending the oppressed.  But when organizations achieve too much success, they often develop a sense of confidence and arrogance that, when unchecked, leads to their downfall.  They begin to believe they can “do no evil”.  A recent statement by the EFF makes me wonder whether it has reached this stage and needs to have its “Google China” moment. Michael Arrington wrote in 2007 that the “EFF may be getting a tad overzealous in its desire to defend our right to violate copyright and other intellectual property laws, and needs to take a step back and consider if the oppressed are now becoming the oppressor”.  I’m beginning to believe that Michael was right.

Let me explain the background of a case which the EFF has just passed judgment on so that you can decide for yourself whether this is indeed the situation.

The anti-immigrant groups and xenophobes I’ve written a lot about see the H-1B visa issue as the beachhead in their battle against skilled immigrants.  Nearly all foreign skilled professionals (such as engineers, scientists, and doctors) need this visa to work in the U.S.  As with the tax system, Medicare, and the big bailout, the H-1B visa program has its flaws and is occasionally abused.  You don’t see much visa fraud in Silicon Valley, because skills and competence are the only things that matter.  But for grunt-type IT work, cost is a bigger factor.  Most large service companies are highly ethical and go by the book. There are, however, a few shoddy body shops that bring in low-skilled workers and pay them below market wages.  These are a small minority.  Nevertheless, they make an easy target.

One of the most vocal members of the anti-immigration alliance is a computer programmer who calls himself “Tunnel Rat” (he doesn’t have the courage to reveal his real name).  He maintains several websites (ITgrunt.com, Endh1b.com, and Guestworkerfraud.com) that focus on attacking Indians, Hindus, and H-1B workers, whom he calls “curry-scented slumdogs”.  His websites are laced with racial slurs and profanity in English and Hindi and openly advocate hatred and violence.

Here are some examples from these websites.

Immediately after the massacre at the Fort Hood military base in Texas last November, which left 13 people dead and 29 wounded, Tunnel Rat put up a blog post that tried to link the killings to the H-1B program.  It said:

“American tech professionals have been forced to cower to the Indu-Invaders in I.T. because if they stood up for themselves, they would be labeled racists.  And thus, like the Feds, they said nothing, even as they were training their slumdog replacements and packing their boxes”.

A few days later, a gunman shot six people in Orlando, Florida.  According to CNN, Jason Rodriguez had worked for a year at RS&H, a facilities and infrastructure consulting firm, as an entry-level engineer before he was put on several months of probation and fired for “performance issues”.  Then he worked at Subway for two years before losing his sanity.  Kim Berry, President of a group called the Programmer’s Guild (which claims to represent the technical and professional workers of America, and which, according to Wikipedia, had 400 members at what was presumably its peak in 1999), posted on a blog suggesting that the murders might not have happened if RS&H (which has 800 employees) had not applied for six H-1B visa slots in 2007 and 11 in 2008.

    IT-4

    Tunnel Rat piled on:

“It is my belief that Rodriquez was pushed aside to make room for an H-1B…  I predict that this is just the beginning of a massive wave of violence as middle-aged American men reach their breaking point and start to settle scores.  … H-1B program is now a national security issue.  We can’t have an invasion of curry-scented pod-people displacing millions of Americans”.

All of this is bizarre, despicable and disgusting, but other than the racial slurs, may not cross any lines. It is still free speech. Here is a posting from Tunnel Rat that does cross the line:

Now that the slumdogs have taken over Google, I can no longer trust them to protect my anonymity…  That is why I am protecting myself and my family by stockpiling weapons and ammo…  My greatest hope is that some techie goes crazy and acts out violently against his slumdog replacement and the collaborators that hired the feral jackal.  That techie in Pittsburgh was way off the mark by going after women at a gym.  If he was going to kill himself anyway, he should of stopped off at the nearby law offices of Cohen & Grigsby.

[Cohen & Grigsby has been in the news for a talk one of its lawyers gave on how to work the H-1B system].

    ITGrunt-1

In another post he responds to an Indian concerned about his racist remarks: “You should be concerned about THIS [link to article about violent attacks against Indians in Australia].” Tunnel Rat also gloated about having emailed the person “pictures of dead Indians and other nasty things” and said:

Here’s a deal, SLUMDOGS.  Get rid of Vineet Nayar, “the highly respected CEO of HCL Technologies” and I will stop blogging.  Here’s a picture, so you can identify the FAT FUCK…  Go ahead, eliminate that fucker.  I promise I WILL STOP BLOGGING…  The ball is in your court.

I can cite many more examples of threats of violence and “retribution”, but I am sure you get the idea.

One of the companies maligned, Apex Technology Group, filed suit against these sites.  In late December, a New Jersey court ruled in favor of Apex and ordered the sites to shut down, although allowing them enough time to file an appeal.

After the decision, the EFF put up a blog post criticizing the takedown order and claiming that the “… order dangerously overreaches.  By restricting access to entire websites, it places a prior restraint on all of the speech on the websites, even if that speech is unrelated to Apex”. EFF argued that this would be like “a court shutting Amazon.com or Yelp.com because of a disparaging review of a single product”.  I’m not sure whether this is a good analogy.  In my mind, those sites clearly cross the line from protected speech into terroristic threats or harassment.  A better analogy would be a Jihadi site posting hateful propaganda and calls to violence.  These sites use the same techniques: posting misleading information and hateful rants and suggesting that readers do something to right the alleged wrongs.

So I e-mailed the author of the EFF blog post, Kurt Opsdahl, a senior staff attorney at EFF, to ask him what gives.  I asked what if the site EFF had been defending were attacking African-Americans or Jews: would EFF be taking the same stand?  What if the site had been advocating a holocaust or calling people “niggers” instead of “slumdogs”: would this cross the line?  I also told him that I had received death threats traced back to the domain names in question via email and in the reader feedback section of BusinessWeek in articles I had written about immigration.

Kurt would not respond to the substance of what I asked.  The jist of his response: “A court order should not shut down any website unless the entirety was not protected speech.  While a ‘true threat’ is not protected speech, there are many views which are protected, even if repugnant”.

What shocked me about Kurt’s response was this comment: “I have not read the sites, since they were offline before this matter came to our attention”.  I find this absolutely unbelievable. Doesn’t the EFF know how to search the Google cache?  Doesn’t it have a responsibility to ensure that it is using its power effectively and wisely?

What sort of “power” does the EFF have exactly?  Right after its blog post, ComputerWorld’s Patrick Thibodeau wrote this article condemning the judge’s decision, which, like the EFF statement, didn’t even mention the nature of the speech on the site ordered to be shut down. (Patrick has been a vocal opponent of H-1B visas, something else he does not disclose in his coverage).  Likewise, the San Francisco Chronicle and The Oakland Journal posted articles holding up the EFF blog post as a shining beacon of justice.  The favorable media coverage became a major victory not only for opponents of H-1B visas but also for the general white supremacist, neo-Nazi, “kill all dark foreigners” crowd.  Nice company, EFF.  I’m sure you’ll get invited to the David Duke annual Christmas party soon.

You can debate the merits of the EFF stance from a legal standpoint.  But the EFF cannot function in a contextual vacuum.  I am certain its employees feel overworked and underpaid like those of many other non-profits.  But, by siding unwaveringly with some of the most hateful sites on the Internet and not even mentioning the nature of those sites, the EFF betrayed its charter of upholding justice.  A simple Google cache search would have easily shown Kurt and his colleagues that the sites in question were vitriolic.  By giving Tunnel Rat a free pass, the EFF encouraged several major media outlets to echo its one-sided defense of the ability to talk about killing and hurting Indians and H-1B holders.  If people want to have a debate about whether H-1B visas are good for America, let’s have it.  But if the most spirited response they can muster is to threaten the lives of their opponents, they’ve already lost the debate.

The only silver lining on this dark cloud is that it has brought this sort of xenophobia and racism out in the open. The anti-immigrant groups have claimed to be fighting a righteous battle for American workers.  Now it is clear what lies beneath the surface.  They can only fight with hate because logic escapes them.

  • Gary Shilling’s Top Trades For The Year: Buy Treasuries, Buy The Dollar, Dump Commodities

(This guest post originally appeared at the author’s blog)

Gary Shilling has become famous in the last few years for predicting the credit crunch and the bear market.  The bearish investor still believes deflation is the dominant force at work and that the credit crunch is in the process of unfolding.  But he isn’t bearish about everything.  The following are his 6 buys:

    1. Buy treasury bonds – the safehaven trade will return.
    2. Buy income-producing securities – high quality dividend names will be a safe place to hide.
    3. Buy consumer staples and foods – consumers won’t stop buying the necessities.
    4. Buy ’small luxuries’ – consumers are trading down.
    5. Buy the U. S. dollar – still the world’s safehaven currency.
    6. Buy eurodollar futures.

Unfortunately for market bulls Shilling is generally bearish about stocks and the global economy.  His 11 sells:

    1. Sell U.S. stocks in general – U.S. stocks are just too expensive.
    2. Sell home-builder and selected related stocks – home prices will fall 10% in 2010 and the stocks will tank with it.
    3. Sell big-ticket consumer discretionary  equities-  consumers aren’t buying luxury goods due to the trade down.
    4. Sell banks & other financial institutions – the days of big bank profits and bailouts are over.
    5. Sell consumer lenders’ stocks – consumers will continue to deleverage.
    6. Sell many low- and old-tech capital-equipment producers.
    7. If you plan to sell a home or investment house, do so yesterday.
    8. Sell junk bonds.
    9. Sell commercial real estate – the real estate bubble is a slow motion train wreck.
    10. Sell most commodities – the dollar rally will crush commodities.
    11. Sell developing country stocks and bonds – there will be no decoupling.

Diamond district high-rise could be boon for New York’s jewel biz

    By Jason Fink
    May 19, 2009

It may seem like an unusual time to spend money on the luxury jewelry industry but that’s what city officials were touting Monday as they unveiled plans for a new 34-story office building in the heart of the diamond district.

Construction is about to begin on the International Gem Tower on West 47th Street, a high-rise that will house office space, vaults and retail for diamond dealers. The city plans to provide some $50 million in tax incentives for the project, being built by Extell Development.

"Diamonds are one of New York’s best friends and one of our most enduring industries," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Extell is also seeking "free trade zone" status, which would allow companies to import, cut, and then export stones without paying import duties.

The city tax breaks will come only if the building is 85 percent occupied by jewelry related businesses and if 50 percent of the businesses are either new or expanded from existing locations, rather than simply relocated.

Bloomberg said the city’s diamond industry is facing increased competition from international cities such as Dubai. Giving tax incentives, he argued, will keep diamond dealers in the city and help anchor the industry during a period of economic distress.

The city said the new project, expected to be complete by 2011, will provide 3,000 jobs with some 250 businesses. Many of those will be taken by workers coming from oversees, Extell officials said.

Bloomberg Launches 47th Street "Gem Tower"

    By Rob Bates
    5/19/2009

The proposed 34-storey “International Gem Tower” in the 47th Street “diamond district” got high-powered support Tuesday morning, with New York Michael Bloomberg attending its kick-off.

The tower, which is due to be completed mid-2011, will be a sleek building at 50 West 47th Street that will feature both jewelry and non-jewelry tenants in its "office condominiums," as well as entrances on both 46th and 47th Streets.

In an exclusive interview with JCK, Gary Barnett, CEO of building developer Extell Development Company, noted that the tower had yet to sign any big name tenants, since it hadn’t begun marketing itself. But he said there was “already a lot of interest.”

Barnett said his background in the industry got him involved in the project. He said that many 47th Street buildings were “behind the times” and that he hoped a modern structure could help New York compete with other diamond centers.

“The tower will be an incredible addition to 47th Street and the New York skyline,” he told the crowd at the kick-off.

He also said the tower hoped to include a “free-trade zone” that would attract foreign buyers.

Speakers noted that, for the building to receive certain tax abatements, 85% of its tenants would have to be jewelry-related.

Bloomberg called the diamond industry “one of New York’s best friends and one of New York’s enduring industries.”

He said the tower’s construction casts “a strong vote of confidence in the city.”

Crane rises on New York’s International Gem Tower

    September 01, 2009

New York–Construction on the International Gem Tower (IGT), a 34-story building designed as an exclusive property for the jewelry trade, got underway in New York City’s famed Diamond District over the weekend, according to a press release from Extell Development Co.

A tower crane was erected at the development site for the IGT, located at 50 West 47th St. between Fifth and Sixth avenues in Manhattan.

The crane is now fully functional and mobilized, according to the release. Following inspection by New York City’s Department of Buildings, slated to take place sometime this week, steel will be arriving on site and construction will move forward as planned, the release states.

The first phase of the project, expected to be completed by the end of 2009, includes three below-grade floors that will house retail space, a vault, valet parking facilities and underground loading docks.

According to the release, the tower is slated to be completed and open in the fall of 2011.

At the tower’s official launch in May, Extell announced that it would have $300 million invested in the project at the completion of the first phase and was looking for further funding to continue.

Extell representatives did not respond to request for comment on Tuesday on the current state of funding for the project.

"We are excited about the industry response to this building," Raizy Haas, Extell senior vice president in charge of the project, said in the release. "With significant letters of interest in hand and construction moving ahead, we are committed to delivering a world-class international center for the gem and jewelry trades; a first for the United States and a stunning architectural and functional space for the city."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand for the launch of the tower in May and noted that the tower was needed to help the city remain competitive in the international jewelry trade.

Similar towers exist in Shanghai, China, and in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

  • Mitsubishi ponders Triton pickup production in States

    MItsubishi Triton

Mitsubishi’s been having a rough time of it lately here in the United States. Last year, sales fell 44.8 percent. Ouch. Even worse, Mitsu’s lone U.S. manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois is way under capacity. How far under? Well, the Normal plant’s website lists its capacity at 135,000 vehicles per year. Only thing is, back when that plant was a joint Chrysler/Mitsubishi venture it could pop out 240,000 cars per year. Last year, Normal made just 18,501 vehicles.

As you might imagine, Mitsubishi’s uncertain as to whether the Normal plant will remain open. One solution might be to introduce and build their Triton pickup truck in the U.S.. America’s been sorely lacking in the small pickup market for the last 15 years or so, and the Triton would be a welcome player to the segment.

Only thing is, because of the notorious chicken tax, Mitsubishi would need to build about 50,000 to 60,000 Tritons a year to make the endeavor worthwhile. Last year’s 44.8 percent drop in business meant that Mitsubishi only sold 53,986 cars and trucks last year. Anyone else sense a problem? Even if Mitsubishi’s sales rebound over the 100,000 unit mark, it’s doubtful that 50 to 60 percent of that total would be a small pickup truck, especially as Mitsubishi’s mid-size truck, the Raider, was quietly discontinued last year.

  • LG – Windows Mobile 7 coming to US in September

    lgwm7september

It seems LG just can not keep the lid on the Windows Mobile 7 news, despite Microsoft’s best efforts to keep a lid on the news.

In the latest revelation they told a French tech blogger Presse-Citron who was participating in a design session at LG Design Labs that they expect to release Windows Mobile 7 in September.

Of course this news was promptly tweeted, but has since been deleted.  Fortunately Google’s cache is a bit slower in doing it, and the tweet can at the moment still be seen if you search for Presse Citron’s tweets.

In the background of Microsoft’s rumour control efforts which is convincing many that Windows Mobile 7 will not be announced at Mobile World Congress, this is certainly welcome news.
