  • Audi expects to sell 80,000 units of the A1 in its first full year

Audi today continued its teasing of the upcoming A1 compact that will debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The German automaker released a new video with Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at Audi AG, speaking about the A1. Schwarzenbauer said that Audi expects to sell a total of 80,000 units of the A1 in its first full year.

“The subcompact segment is forecast to grow in Europe by the year 2015 – in Germany alone growth of 30 percent is anticipated. We’re currently expecting to sell 80,000 units of the A1 in its first full year,” said Schwarzenbauer. “People who for practical reasons choose a small car want not only the basic functions, but an exciting design and the latest technology as well. With the A1, we’re giving these customers what they want by launching the first premium car in the subcompact segment.”

“The new A1 also benefits from innovations taken from larger Audi models, such as the A3 and A8,” Audi said in a statement. “As well as its state-of-the-art engines, examples of what the A1 has to offer include a start-stop system, brake energy recuperation and an on-board computer with efficiency program.”

  • DOL Announces Green Jobs Training Grants to Create Pathways Out of Poverty

Following on the heels of its announcement last week of $100 million in Energy Training Partnership green jobs training grants, the Department of Labor announced another set of green jobs training grants this week: the Pathways Out of Poverty Grants. These grants are especially meaningful to the Apollo Alliance, as they represent the fruition of years of work by Apollo on the Green Jobs Act, which was passed as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and authorized $125 million per year in funding to train workers for jobs in energy efficiency and renewable energy. It also represents our more recent work on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which finally provided the funding for the green jobs training programs authorized by the Green Jobs Act.

The Pathways Out of Poverty Grants were awarded primarily to organizations serving communities with poverty rates of 15 percent or higher. The $150 million in grant funding will go toward programs that not only train workers in the skills they need for jobs in energy efficiency and renewable energy, but also provide trainees with basic literacy and job readiness skills. Many of the programs will also provide support services like assistance with childcare and transportation.

Trainees served by the programs come from populations that face a variety of barriers to employment—high-school drop outs, ex-offenders, veterans, people with limited English proficiency and people with disabilities, among others. If the programs succeed, they will ensure that our growing green economy “lifts all boats” and “connects the people who most need work with the work that most needs to be done,” as Van Jones, former Apollo board member and founder of Green For All, who was instrumental in the passage of the Green Jobs Act, testified before Congress last year.

Among the 38 programs that will receive Pathways Out of Poverty grants are many the Apollo Alliance is familiar with. Goodwill Industries International will employ a four-phased model in its training program, designed to move job seekers from an intensive individual assessment through a job placement in energy efficient building construction or renewable energy in six cities: Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Grand Rapids, Phoenix and Washington, DC. Jobs for the Future Inc. will partner with the AFL-CIO Working for America Institute to ramp up pathways for unemployed and disadvantaged individuals in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Milwaukee and Philadelphia to move into green industries like energy-efficient building, construction and retrofitting. The National Council of La Raza will provide linguistically and culturally competent training in energy efficiency and clean energy for individuals with limited English proficiency in San Jose, San Diego and Chicago.

Many other deserving programs will receive Pathways Out of Poverty grants. For a full list, visit the Department of Labor website.

White House Also Announces Clean Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit Awards

Meanwhile, at the end of last week, the Obama administration announced the beneficiaries of an ARRA reward that could create some of the jobs that Pathways Out of Poverty trainees might eventually attain. The clean energy manufacturing tax credit will benefit 183 manufacturing facilities in 43 states, by providing them with a 30 percent tax credit for investments in facilities that produce renewable energy technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, advanced batteries and other clean energy products. The administration estimates that the $2.3 billion in tax credits will provide much-needed support to the domestic clean energy manufacturing sector and generate more than 17,000 jobs.

In December, the Obama administration proposed expanding the clean energy manufacturing tax credit by $5 billion because the program was oversubscribed by a ratio of 3-1, which meant many qualified manufacturing facilities that applied for the tax credits were not approved.

“The Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit program, which supports the building and equipping of factories to make the products of the green economy, has been wildly successful since its inception,” said Phil Angelides, chairman of the Apollo Alliance.

You can read the press release about the companies that will be awarded the tax credit on the White House website. Visit ApolloAlliance.org to read our statement on the proposal to expand the tax credit.

*Center for American Progress says there’s good news about U.S. clean energy policy. This week, the Center for American Progress released an evaluation of the Obama administration’s progress on clean energy issues over the last year. The report, A Breath of Fresh Air: Obama Seizes the Energy Opportunity, says that despite setbacks like the failure of the Senate to vote on a clean energy and climate bill in 2009, the President and Congress made significant progress last year in the transition to a clean energy economy. They list the limits on greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles; the announcement that the EPA will regulate greenhouse gases; the inclusion of $100 billion in the Recovery Act for clean energy programs; and several other achievements that will have real-world impact. To read the report, go to the Center for American Progress website.

*Coming Soon: Clean Energy Week. Led by ACORE (the American Council on Renewable Energy), some 40 national organizations (including the Apollo Alliance) are organizing a week of action from Feb. 1–5, 2010, to encourage enactment of federal clean energy and climate measures. Clean Energy Week will consist of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, receptions, workshops, press conferences, rallies and outreach activities on Capitol Hill and across Washington, DC, sponsored individually by the participating organizations. • No Jaguar XJ Coupe, C-Type Convertible on its way

    1952 Jaguar C-Type

Remember last year we told you that Jaguar’s design boss Ian Callum was already working on an XJ Coupe? Well, it was a lie (not told by us). According to a source inside Jaguar, there are no plans for an XJ Coupe and there never were; however, the automaker is working on the much-anticipated C-Type convertible.

The source said that the C-Type convertible has been given the green light and will arrive as a 2012 model to compete with the Audi TT, BMW Z4 and the Mercedes-Benz SLK.

Internally referred to as the “small sports car,” the model will feature an aluminum monocoque and may be available as a coupe and a soft-top convertible. We’ll bring you more details as we get them.

  • Intel Promo Material Points to Core i5 MacBook Pros

An internal employee incentive program aimed at Intel retail salespeople seems to have let the cat out of the bag about a major upcoming revision to Apple’s MacBook Pro line, according to AppleInsider. If the flyer detailing the program is accurate, the MacBook Pro will soon sport the Intel Core i5 processor, replacing the Intel Core 2 Duo chip that has long driven Apple’s upscale line of notebooks.

A prize draw for passing the training for sales associates for the month advertises two prizes of MacBook Pro laptops, featuring the Intel Core i5 processor. Intel, for its part, maintains that although the flyers are indeed company material, the suggestion that MacBooks will soon feature Core i5 tech is merely a typo.

The Intel Core 2 Duo has been running the show in MacBook Pros since the very same year Intel took over chip-making duties for the Apple line of computers in 2006, although originally the upscale notebooks ran Core Duos, and were upgraded late in the year. That means it’s been nearly four years since we’ve seen a major platform upgrade, although we have seen minor spec bumps and the introduction of the Santa Rosa platform in 2007, which incorporated the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M integrated graphics card.

Intel formally introduced the new Core i3, i5 and i7 chips last week during CES, and the mobile i5 is definitely the most likely suspect for inclusion in subsequent generations of Apple’s powerful notebook line. If Apple does decide to go with the Core i5 chips, contrary to earlier rumblings, future MacBook Pro owners can expect a nice little increase in performance over the Core 2 Duo chips, while at the same time not sacrificing anything due to increased power demands. Advantages also include increased battery performance, more speed and better graphics, and they could allow Apple to assign less internal space to the motherboard, which could clear up room additional battery volume or other things. 3G antenna, anyone?

  • Ford’s direct ethanol injected Bobcat engine not based on new 5.0L V8

Last year we heard about a very interesting experimental engine that Ford was working on called the “Bobcat.” The engine in question is a 5.0-liter V8 that features turbocharging and two independent fuel injection systems. The primary system utilizes traditional port injection to deliver gasoline to the cylinders, while the secondary system injects E85 directly into the combustion chambers. The idea was to create an engine that could match a diesel’s power and torque figures for less money.

Now that Ford has officially revealed the new 5.0-liter V8 for the 2011 Mustang GT, we began wondering whether the new engine was the basis for the Bobcat. We had a chance to chat with Mike Harrison, the chief engineer on the 5.0-liter and the 6.2-liter truck V8, who told us that the 5.0-liter Bobcat was actually derived from the old 5.4-liter V8 currently used in the F-150 and the Shelby GT500.

For the Bobcat experimental engine, the longer-stroked 5.4 was used in combination with a smaller bore that provided thicker cylinder walls needed to withstand the high internal pressures of the boosted 750 pound-foot engine. According to Harrison, the Bobcat was part of a Department of Energy funded research project and there are no current plans for a production engine based on the technology. He also tells us that the extra cost of the dual injection systems and more robust block and heads negates much of the savings from not needing a diesel after-treatment system.

This test is no doubt neat. I mean, automakers test the exterior to make sure every piece can withstand extreme temperatures and they should. But how about the test where the Volt’s battery is heated up to 200 degrees. Where is that video? I’ve sat in a few cars after they baked in the sun all day long and the exterior was cool to the touch but were at least 200 degrees inside. What’s that going to do to the lithium-ion battery pack? I have so many questions.

  • Rumor: Tablet delays iPhone updates

With Apple’s rumored media event only two weeks away, people are hopeful that it’ll bring an announcement of the tablet. Could it be that the next iPhone OS update is also waiting for that event?

iPodNN quotes a source who suggests that the next version of the iPhone OS is laden with references to its forthcoming sibling, and therefore must wait until the tablet is made public. Last month, The Boy Genius Report pointed out alleged evidence of iPhone firmware 3.1.3 and 4.0 in private testing, which is likely, but these builds have not yet been made available to developers or the public.

Just this week, Boy Genius suggested that the tablet is a sort of “iPhone on steroids,” that is to say, a larger and more tricked-out version of the little guy. At the same time, John Gruber relayed one of those “friend-of-a-friend” tales suggesting that the iPhone is actually a by-product of the device they originally intended to build. Only now has the technology caught up to allow for the tablet’s existence.

Oh what a tangled web we weave…

  • Chrome For Mac Finally All Systems Go With Bookmark Manager

Screen shot 2010-01-14 at 3.02.30 PMFor the past several weeks I’ve only used one web browser: Google Chrome for Mac. Sure, it’s still in beta, but it’s fast and generally bug-free. That said, there have still be a couple of annoying issues. One was that there was no extension support (aside from Chromium builds), but that changed last week in the Chrome for Mac dev build. The other was that you could not manage your bookmarks. That changed today.

The latest dev channel release of Chrome for Mac, 4.0.295.0, released today, brings with it a bookmark manager for the first time. While you’ve been able to import bookmarks from Safari for a while, you had no way to manage them. Basically, it meant that you had to use Safari to manage them and to make the change in Chrome, go into your file system, delete the Chrome bookmarks file, and re-import anytime you wanted to make a change. With this new Bookmark Manager, Chrome for Mac is now at full systems go for me. Yes, it’s still missing a few other features such as full-screen mode and application shortcuts, but for day-to-day usage, it’s solid.

Google is calling this first crack at a bookmark manager “rudimentary,” but I’m using it now and it has just about everything I need: drag and drop, copy and paste, click-to-edit, and delete. There is still one minor thing missing: the ability to manage the “Other Bookmarks” area.

Along with the Bookmark Manager addition, Google fixed several bugs that caused crashes in Chrome for Mac, and added another nice feature: a multi-touch way to open new tabs. If you hold command and do a three-finger swipe on a MacBook (or two-finger swipe on the Magic Mouse), Chrome will open a new tab with your previous or next page from the one you are currently on. To open the previous page in a new tab, you hold command and swipe left. To open the next page, you hold control and swipe right. It’s actually pretty useful.

Again, these changes are only in the dev channel build of Chrome for Mac right now, which you can find here. But you can expect them to trickle up to the beta channel shortly.

  • The Wobble iPhone App Guy Really Wants On TechCrunch, And Is Willing To Pay

We occasionally get offers for payments in exchange for posts on TechCrunch. Sometimes we post these offers to let the world know who’s out there trying to pay for coverage. Usually, though, we just delete them.

  • Ford F-150 to get 2011 Mustang’s 3.7L Ti-VCT V6

    2009 Ford F-150

Sources have told PickupTrucks.com that the Ford F-150 is going to get a new 6-cylinder engine option in addition to the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost that will be available in the lineup by the end of 2010. Insiders say that the F-150 is slated to get the same 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 that made its debut in the 2011 Ford Mustang.

The engine will be the base option offered with the F-150 on top of the EcoBoost V6, which will cost more.

The 3.7L V6 will be available before the end of 2012 on the XL and STX models. Ford hasn’t offered a V6 engine option for the F-150 since the 2008 model year.

  • Crinetics Enters Collaboration Agreement With Ferring Research Institute

    Crinetics Pharma
    Bruce V. Bigelow wrote:

Crinetics Pharmaceuticals, an early stage San Diego biotech developing specialized biosensors for drug discovery applications, says it has signed a collaboration agreement with the Ferring Research Institute, the peptide research center established in San Diego by Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

Last month, when Crinetics got a small business research grant of nearly $238,000, the startup said its technology is focused on developing biosensors that utilize a family of receptor molecules on cell walls called G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). The biotech says it’s own work is focused on studying endocrine GPCRs that can be used in assays for drug molecules, allowing researchers to rule candidate drugs in or out at an earlier stage and thus potentially speeding up pharmaceutical R&D.

In its statement yesterday, Crinetics says it will apply components of its GPCR Dynamics assay platform to a Ferring proprietary drug discovery target. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Stephen Betz, a Crinetics scientist and spokesman, said no further details would be released about Ferring’s drug target or the agreement itself.

“Our strategy is to initially fund through grants and contracts, with the hope of attracting venture funding in this new year,” Betz writes in an email. “We have the first SBIR grant…and have other applications outstanding. The Ferring deal is by no means exclusive (though certainly the content of their project is) and we are also in discussions with other companies and so hope to have other ‘Ferring-type’ deals in the not-too-distant future. We think we can help a lot of people.”

Based in Saint-Prex, Switzerland, Ferring Pharmaceuticals specializes in developing drugs in the areas of urology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, and fertility.

  • Biosphere 2

    Oracle, Arizona | Outsider Architecture

With dreams of colonizing Mars, John P. Allen, who made his millions in oil, funded the building of Biosphere 2 in the middle of the Arizona desert. (Planet earth is Biosphere 1.) The 3.15-acre sealed glass house is a dazzlingly attempt to completely recreate the conditions and environment of Earth including a rain forest, desert, marsh, and an mini-ocean.

In September 1991, seven crew members walked into Biosphere 2, which was sealed behind them. They were charged with the task of growing their own food and conducting environmental experiments while sealed for two years inside the complex.

What started as a science experiment turned into a psychological experiment. The body masses of the scientists fell over time, as did the biosphere’s oxygen levels. “Confined environment psychology” set in. Crew members grew to despise each other and found conflict in even the smallest decisions. The media and scientific community criticized the two-year, $150-million-dollar experiment, calling it “tamper-prone” and a “stunt.”

The crew stayed in Biosphere 2 for the full two years, but when they emerged, their experiment was largely dismissed as a scientific failure. It was, from a monetary perspective, a total disaster. Despite this discouraging news, a second crew entered in April of 1994 and exited prematurely in September of the same year as the management of Biosphere 2 dissolved.

Unused for many years, the facility was bought by the University of Arizona in 2007 and is now the home of many university experiments and educational programs. Visitors can now take a tour of the now non-sealed biosphere and learn about the over 3,500 exotic species growing in the dome, as well as the experiments currently taking place in it – none of which involve living inside the dome.

While McAfee is offering a free tool for scanning, it’s only free for six months and then you have to pay — meaning that this is really an upsell plan. Facebook claims it chose McAfee after a “competitive review process,” but that makes no sense. Why not offer up a list of ways that you can prove your computer is safe that is vendor neutral?

  • Tila Tequila Fired By Publicist

Tila Tequila has been dismised — by her own publicist. Tila’s representative, Jessica Cohen, has joined the rest of the world in the assertion that the petite minx’s is absolutely bonkers. Cohen severed ties with the unstable former reality star in a press statement issued Thursday afternoon, after claiming discomfort with some of Tequila’s recent public behavior.

“This is to inform you that I am no longer representing Tila Tequila as her publicist. Some matters need to remain private and away from media attention and due to recent events, I realized that we need to part ways while she deals with the loss of her fiancée,” Cohen wrote in the statement.

The always resourceful Tila will be reppin’ herself until she hires a new mouthpiece.

The PR ace was likely put off by Tila’s recent declaration to seek custody of late fiancee Casey Johnson’s three-year-old adopted daughter Ava, even though she’s only met the child once. Tila — who probably couldn’t keep sea monkeys alive — is convinced that Casey would want her to take care of her daughter:

“Her last wish was to have Ava, have me have Ava… She’s not resting in peace right now. She has come to me in my dreams!”

  • What the cyber-attack from China means

Gregory Fayer opened an e-mail on Monday night that looked like it was from a fellow lawyer at Gipson Hoffman & Pancione. Instead, it was a message that placed Fayer and his firm in the middle of what might be the biggest international cyber-conflict to date.

This week, search engine giant Google disclosed that it had also been a victim of cyber-attacks from China, and has taken the bold step of threatening to shut down the Chinese version of its search engine.  On Thursday, computer security firm VeriSign said it had traced the Google attacks back to "to a single foreign entity consisting either of agents of the Chinese state or proxies thereof," and that 30 companies were targeted.

Fayer's law firm is likely one of those victims, as the technique used against it is similar to the Google attack.  The e-mail Fayer received was laced with a computer virus intended to allow the sender to spy on Fayer's computer; a blatant act of espionage, he said.  But Fayer wasn't terribly surprised. Last week, his firm filed a blockbuster lawsuit against the Chinese government on behalf of CyberSittter LLC, which makes parental control software.  CyberSitter says the Chinese stole its computer code while creating the infamous Green Dam censorship program, which was designed to be placed on every Chinese citizen's PC last year. After a backlash, the government decided to make installation optional.

"Our law firm was certainly on high alert because of the lawsuit," he said.  "This is somewhat to be expected when you file a high-profile lawsuit against the government of China.”

Fayer said he couldn't share much information about the e-mail, as FBI officials are investigating the incident. But it was designed to look like part of a normal electronic chat with a colleague.

"I was the first recipient at the firm," he said. "But there have actually been three waves of these customized e-mails.They'd each been made to look like they had a different sender, and a different pretense for the links or attachments embedded in the e-mails." The cybercriminal was clearly moving down a list of potential contacts at the firm, looking for someone to take the bait, he said.

"The program was designed to go in and get information from our servers and computers and sent it back to the sender," he said.

Computer researchers call the technique "spear phishing."  Rather than flooding a firm with thousands of spam-like phishing e-mails hoping to dupe dozens of victims, the new technique involves very specific, targeted notes designed to fool one victim at a time – and then use that computer to spy on the target agency or steal data.

While Fayer could say little about the potential agent behind the attack, he said the firm assumed that "the timing of the e-mail attacks are not a coincidence."

No lawyers fell for the trick, Fayer said, and he did not believe any information had been stolen.

The alleged attacks from China are troubling on many fronts.  On Thursday, security firm McAfee released a report saying the program used to target U.S. firms involved a so-called "zero day" vulnerability — one that was to this point unknown to the security community, and thus indefensible by anti-virus software. The flaw involved Microsoft's Internet Explorer, McAfee said. Microsoft says it is working quickly to provide a software patch.

But the malicious software attacks other software flaws too, McAfee said, adding this ominous note: "There very well may be other attack vectors that are not known to us at this time."

"These highly customized attacks known as advanced persistent threats were primarily seen by governments and the mere mention of them strikes fear in any cyberwarrior,” wrote McAfee's George Kurtz in a blog post today.  “They are in fact the equivalent of the modern drone on the battle field. With pinpoint accuracy they deliver their deadly payload and once discovered – it is too late…All I can say is wow. The world has changed. Everyone's threat model now needs to be adapted to the new reality of these advanced persistent threats. In addition to worrying about Eastern European cybercriminals trying to siphon off credit card databases, you have to focus on protecting all of your core intellectual property."

Mark Rasch, former head of the Department of Justice computer crime unit, called the attacks “cyberwarfare,” and said it was clearly an escalation of digital conflict between China and the U.S.

“At least it’s an escalation of the rhetoric, and that’s an escalation,” he said. “War is the extension of politics by other means, and the Internet is the extension of politics, and this is a form of cyberwarfare.”

While isolated examples of government-sponsored hacking have popped up through the years, Rasch – who now runs Bethesda, Md.-based security consulting firm FTI – says this week’s incidents of alleged Chinese attacks are “new in the sense that they’ve been so  blatant,” and apparently so widespread, ranging from attempts to read dissidents’ e-mails to spying on a legal adversary.

“We’ve had attacks in the past but by and large they were done in a way that gave the country plausible deniability,” said Rasch. “But this was different. This was fairly clearly a government-run operation.”

China has yet to directly address the allegations. At a regular press briefing in Beijing on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said only “The Chinese government administers the Internet according to law and we have explicit stipulations over what content can be spread on the Internet,” according to the Bloomberg news service.

  • Report: Ford could take Lincoln global (one day)

Just a few years ago, Ford had so many luxury brands in its then considerable suite of marques that there were upscale offerings for just about any taste in every region of the world. Aston Martin, Land Rover and Jaguar are now in the hands of other owners and Volvo is on the outs, so how will Ford deliver luxury goods to other regions of the world? How about Lincoln?

The idea has been kicked around to no avail in the past, but with a growing luxury market in emerging markets like China, the Blue Oval may need a new global plan for its lone luxury marquee. Automotive News reports that Ford will only discuss expanding Lincoln globally when its North American operation gets turned around. Ford President of the Americas Mark Fields told AN, “We don’t have any plans at this point to take it global. That doesn’t mean in the future we wouldn’t look at that, but it’s very important for us to focus on North America.”

If Ford waits for Lincoln to turn around in North America before looking at other markets, the process could take a while. Lincoln sales were down 23 percent in 2009, with sales dipping to a 28-year low of 82,847 units. Many of Lincolns newer models have arrived with a luke-warm reception from both journalists and the car-buying public, though there are high hopes for the recently introduced 2011 Lincoln MKX and its trick MyLincoln Touch interface. Another Lincoln that could help spur sales overseas is a smaller model based off of the Concept C from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
