  • Brisbane parking labelled world’s fifth most expensive

    Released back in 08
    http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s…2-3102,00.html

EAGLE Street in Brisbane city is Queensland’s most expensive place to park – but inner-city shopping car parks aren’t far behind, leaving Brisbane parkers feeling the financial pinch more than most.

The city is the fifth most expensive place to park in the world, according to the Colliers International 2008 Global CBD parking rates survey. It costs more to park in Brisbane than it does in midtown New York.

The survey, which covers a broad selection of 138 major metropolitan cities across North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America, placed Brisbane behind London City, London West End, Sydney and Hong Kong.

In Eagle St, most car parks charge $50 for more than four hours.

The same time spent at car parks on Tank, Ann, Charlotte or Adelaide streets will also set parkers back anywhere up to $49.

Brisbane’s most expensive places to park
    • Eagle Street Pier, 1 Eagle St, 3.5 hours for $50
    • Central Plaza, 345 Queen St, 4 hours for $50
    • Central Plaza, 66 Eagle St, 4 hours for $50
    • Queens Plaza, corner of Adelaide and Edward streets, 4 hours for $49
    • Emirates House, 167 Eagle St, 4 hours for $49
    • Boeing House, 363 Adelaide St, 4 hours for $49
    World’s most expensivemonthly parking ($A)
    1. London City, $1191
    2. London West End, $1160
    3. Sydney, $791
    4. Hong Kong, $758
    5. Brisbane, $604
    6. New York – Midtown, $597
Colliers International research director Felice Spark said there had been a correlation between plummeting office vacancies in Brisbane and increasing parking costs.

"As the economic crisis takes hold, we might see this turn around but at the moment city parkers are paying the price for high demand," Ms Spark said.

Former Sydneysider Carol-Anne Nelson said the cost of parking in Brisbane seemed to rival Sydney’s notorious price tags.

"To come here on Eagle St and pay $35 after just a couple of hours is ridiculously excessive," Ms Nelson said. "This seems worse than Sydney."

Queensland’s most expensive shopping car park is Queens Plaza, where it costs $49 for four hours or more. The Myer Centre car park is slightly cheaper, maxing out at $43 for 3½ hours or more.

Parking at Queens Plaza this week, the Leighton family had to bring two cars to accommodate seven people, doubling their parking fee. They were shocked when they piled out of their cars and realised they would be paying $98 to shop for about four hours.

"We had no idea it would be anywhere near that much," Jumee Leighton said. "Parks are impossible to find on the road at this time of year, and with so many of us public transport is hard."

Weekends offer better rates for city parking, with Queens Plaza costing no more than $18 and Myer Centre no more than $15.

Parking is cheaper across the river at South Bank where it costs a maximum of $25 to park for more than four hours in a Cordelia St car park and $36 for five hours at the South Bank underground car park.

Some centres offer discounts for spending.

The cheapest Brisbane car parks are the council-operated parks at King George Square ($25 for more than four hours) and Wickham Terrace ($23 for more than four hours).

Hospital parking is also cheaper than parking to shop, with $14 the maximum charged at the Wesley, $15 at St Andrew’s, $15.50 at the Mater, $13.50 at the Princess Alexandra and $23 at Brisbane Private Hospital.

  • PBS To Air Video Games Live, Blu-Ray and CD To Follow

    I LOVE YANNI

Video Games Live is pretty much the best video game concert event outside of the Dear Friends (Final Fantasy) concerts, and PBS is the station that brought us Yanni: Live at the Acropolis, which is easily the best live music event in recorded history, so it looks like there’s some kind of blood-tinged Faustian pact afoot. The February 5th, 2010 performance of Video Games Live at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans will be taped and aired on PBS during June of next year. Tickets to the event are going on sale this Friday (the 18th), so snap them up if you’re interested.

If you don’t want to make it down to N’awlins for the event, firstly, I don’t blame you. Last time I went, everything was coated in a thin layer of insanity gravy. But more importantly, a and CD of the event will be released next year for your mushy consumer brains to slurp up and toss into your PS3. However, the last performance I saw had Steve Vai playing the Halo theme on his guitar, which until then had been the stuff of maladjusted, failed musicians on youtube, so it might just be worth the trek.

Read the press release after the jump.

  • Slingshot Labs’ Demise Overblown As SocialPlan Is Acquired By MySpace

Earlier today Valleywag reported that Slingshot Labs, the News Corp-owned incubator that launched in early 2008, was in the process of being shut down. As it turns out, reports of their demise may have been overblown. We reached out to Slingshot to see if they could confirm the report and Diego Berdakin, Slingshot EVP Strategy & Product, gave us the following statement:

Without getting into detail about the inaccuracies of the Gawker story, the source was obviously very unfamiliar with today’s changes. We have had tremendous success with our projects including SocialPlan, which today is being acquired by MySpace – which includes not only the site but also its core team. Most of the remaining team from Slingshot will be focused on a venture for which there is tremendous excitement.

In other words, some of the people affected by today’s changes aren’t being laid off — they’re being shifted over to MySpace along with the SocialPlan project. SocialPlan was built by Slingshot as a replacement to MySpace’s underperforming events feature, and first launched in March 2009. It quickly gained steam, overtaking Evite in the number of invites sent by July 2009. Since then, it’s apparently done very well — Berdakin sent along a graph showing its growth, which we’ve included below. Doing the math, it looks like SocialPlan is now used to send around 4.3 million invitations a day (Evite reports 600,000 invitations sent per day).  Given its success, it’s pretty obvious why MySpace would want to take over the project.

Berdakin wouldn’t comment on the project Slingshot is currently working on, but it seems likely that it’s the WSJ-linked “LinkedIn Killer” we first reported on last July.

  • YouTube Helps Vevo Overtake MySpace Music In The U.S. Among Top Ten Music Properties

The biggest U.S. music service on the Web in December was Vevo, a new entrant which is a joint venture between Google, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music. Dubbed the “Hulu of music videos,” Vevo attracted 35.4 million unique visitors in December, 2009, putting it above the 33.1 million visitors who went to MySpace Music, according to estimates put out today by comScore. Considering that Vevo only launched on December 8, that is a pretty good showing.

A closer look at the numbers shows, that nearly all of that audience came from YouTube, which hosts a Vevo channel. Of the 35.4 million visitors which comScore counts for Vevo, 32.6 million (or 92 percent) are attributed to YouTube. In one fell blow, YouTube has helped to push MySpace Music from the No. 1 spot.

Not only does this illustrate the distribution might of YouTube, but it also shows how professional content is still hard to beat, even on YouTube. The Vevo channel is already the most viewed channel on YouTube, with nearly 13 billion views across all Vevo and all of Vevo’s sub-sites, which include the individual artist channels for Lady Gaga, Kings of Leon, Timbaland, and many others.

Here are the top ten music services as measured by comScore in unique U.S. visitors for December, 2009. The only real startup is Jango (No.7), with 9.6 million, but the comScore numbers include some lyric sites it also owns. ToneFuse Music, No. 8, is almost entirely a collection of lyric sites. Rhapsody rounds out No. 10 with 6.5 million (Last.fm would be No. 11 with 6 million).

Top U.S. Music Services On The Web (in unique visitors, December, 2009)

    1. Vevo: 35.4 million
    2. MySpace Music: 33.1 million
    3. AOL Music: 29.7 million
    4. Warner Music: 23.4 million
    5. MTV Networks Music: 20.4 million
    6. Yahoo! Music: 16.4 million
    7. Jango Music Network: 9.6 million
    8. ToneFuse Music Network: 8.3 million
    9. MSN Music: 6.6 million
    10. Rhapsody: 6.5 million

  • Viacom’s EPIX Lands Cable Deal With Mediacom Communications

Epix, the movie and entertainment streaming network that works across your TV, computer, and mobile phone, has landed a third cable provider for its service: Mediacom Communications. This week the network also landed a deal with Cox Communications. We wrote about the service here and here. Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Jointly backed by Viacom, Lionsgate, Paramount, and MGM, EPIX provides access to over 15,000 movie titles. The company originally signed a deal with Verizon FIOS, which was somewhat limiting considering only some 2 million people use Verizon’s cable service. Cox brings more clients to EPIX with its base of 6.2 million customers, which including 2.7 million digital cable subscribers. And Mediacom, the 7th largest cable provider in the U.S., will bring with it a base of 1.3 million subscribers in 22 states.

One of our main issues with EPIX was that it was tied to Verizon FIOS but it appears that the company is steadily adding more cable providers to distribute its service. Epix was also said to be close to an agreement with the Dish Network, which would bring a large list of 14 million subscribers. Unfortunately, the platform offers a sliver of available movies out there, since it only includes only the movies available through the studios that are backing the company. But EPIX is useful because it transcends over the TV and your computer and its fairly easy to use.

  • Review: Sony VAIO X Series Notebook PC

    IMG_1307

Short Version: It’s got an Atom CPU and it starts at $1300. That being said, Sony’s X Series is one of the coolest computers I’ve ever used.

    IMG_1292

    Features:

    • Intel Atom Z550 CPU at 2GHz
    • Windows 7 Home Premium
    • 11.1-inch LED-backlit LCD at 1366×768 resolution
    • 64GB or 128GB solid state drive
    • 2GB of RAM
    • GPS, Verizon Broadband, Bluetooth, b/g/n Wi-Fi
    • Standard and extended batteries included
    • Weighs 1.6 pounds with standard battery
    • MSRP starting at $1299.99

    Pros:

    • Unbelievably light, yet feels sturdy
    • 12+ hour battery life with extended battery
    • 2GHz Atom CPU feels snappy, not at all like other netbooks

    Cons:

    • Cramped keyboard and trackpad
    • Standard battery life is short
    • Too much multitasking causes slowdown

    Review:

In all my years of reviewing, buying, and admiring computers, this is one of the most impressive. And lest you think Sony and I are all buddy-buddy, I rarely ever speak to anyone there. John checked this thing out at a press event and they were supposed to send it to him to review but he was out of the country, so it got rerouted to me. And I’m glad it did.

I’m more forgiving to netbooks than most of my coworkers, which is a good thing because this machine is basically a $1300 netbook on steroids. Sony calls it a notebook, which is a smart idea because people associate the word “netbook” with something that costs under $500. If you were to give this machine to someone without telling them what kind of CPU was inside, though, you’d probably not hear a peep out of them. It doesn’t “feel” like a netbook at all.

    What’s Good:

If you have something around you that weighs a pound and a half, pick it up. Now imagine you’re holding an almost-full-size laptop. Does not compute. The VAIO X Series is bewilderingly, astonishingly, how-the-hell-did-they-do-that light. That’s thanks to carbon fiber, which Sony uses liberally in many of its ultraportables.

    IMG_1303

You give up battery life with a 1.6-pound notebook. The standard battery lasts around 2.5 hours under normal use but Sony’s thoughtfully included an extended battery that bumps the life up over 12 hours without adding much weight at all. It adds a bit of thickness to the computer, yes, but it’ll still be one of the lightest computers you’ve ever carried around.

    IMG_1301

The extended battery, pictured above. Pictured below, you’ll notice that at 39% capacity there’s still 3.5 hours of battery life left. You’ll go a couple days between charges.

    IMG_1298

So the portability and battery life are outstanding without too much sacrifice. You still have a pretty sizeable screen to work with at 11.1-inches and 1366×768 resolution and the 2GHz Atom N550 CPU, based on Intel’s new Pine Trail design, doesn’t feel lethargic unless you get a lot of programs open and running at once or you try to render video. Most everyday stuff hums along very nicely. The main takeaway is that the compromise between portability and power seems less gaping with this machine. It’s very, very tiny, yet still pretty nimble.

    What’s Bad:

    IMG_1296

I’m sure there’s some reasoning behind the keyboard, but it’d be nice if it used all the available space on the chassis. The island layout works okay after you get used to it but I can’t help but think the space would have been better used by making bigger keys – even if they touched – and stretching them all the way across. And Sony seems to love putting that tiny right Shift key on all its ultraportable keyboards. I can’t stand that thing.

    IMG_1297

The trackpad, too, is pretty rough. As you can see, there’s not much surface area to work with. Multitouch comes turned on by default, which makes a hard-to-use trackpad almost impossible to use since moving your finger often results in some flavor of zooming, scrolling, or whatever else they’ve baked into it. I turned off all that stuff within a few minutes – even vertical scrolling. After that, it worked well enough to not have to carry a Bluetooth mouse.

    IMG_1294

I have rather large hands but even normal or small hands will seem big when typing or using the trackpad. You do get used to things after a while, though.

    Other Considerations:

If you travel frequently for work, consider that the X Series comes with a 3G chipset from Verizon as well as a GPS chip. It’s conceivably small enough to use in the car as a navigation device, so with the 3G and the GPS fired up you’ve got quite an in-car computer.

    Conclusion:

If you’re at all intrigued by this machine and the relatively high price tag hasn’t scared you off yet, I urge you to swing by a Sony store to see if you can try it out in person. The photos and videos here really don’t do it justice. If you’ve got the money to spend and you like to travel as light as possible, the size, weight, battery life, and myriad of connectivity options make the Sony X Series a very compelling purchase.

  • Nelsinho “Crashgate” Piquet confirms move to NASCAR

Crashing is a big deal in Formula One. Especially, as the ongoing legal battle between the FIA and one Flavio Briatore shows, if you’ve done it on purpose. So Nelson Piquet Jr. couldn’t have been all that surprised that, after having done exactly that and then gone on to blow the whistle on his own team, he hasn’t found a new ride in F1. So… where does a disenfranchised grand prix driver to go for a fresh start? Where do they love crashing more than anywhere else? Why, NASCAR, of course!

The disgraced Brazilian driver expressed interest in a move to stock car racing last year and went on to test a truck for Red Horse Racing in the fall. He’s now slated to test the Camping World Truck Series spec Toyota Tundra again, much like Juan Pablo Montoya and Scott Speed made the jump before him.

Although Piquet hasn’t confirmed exactly which series he’ll be joining, he has specified that it will be a NASCAR series (meaning Camping World Truck Series, Nationwide Series or Sprint Cup), and that he’s fully prepared to start at the ground level and work his way up. So while he may skip the lower levels like ARCA, the smart money’s on a truck debut for Piquet: Sources anticipate he could be behind the wheel as early as next month at Daytona.

  • Android on HTC HD(English Video)

If you are still upset with HTC for not providing a Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for the HTC Touch HD here’s a chance to dabble with the dark side easily.

Android 2.0.1 was recently hacked to work on the HTC Touch HD and now we have a English video to go with it. The video shows Android working pretty well with the HD even thought there are still some bugs and connectivity issues like no Wifi or Bluetooth. There are also speed problems, as you can tell from the video, the builds have extreme lag problems that should be fixed soon. This is still a test build, and soon enough there should be a new one that has better integration and other things to better the performance.

The system uses haret, meaning there is no flashing involved, and your system gets restored back to Windows Mobile on soft reset.

  • Report: GM may reopen factories to keep up with high demand

2010 Cadillac SRX – Click above for high-res gallery

General Motors had a tough 2009, but one very bright spot was the success of some of its newest models. GM North America President Mark Reuss has informed reporters at the Detroit Auto Show that the plants that build the Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox and Buick LaCrosse are already at full capacity and The General simply cannot meet demand. That’s a good problem to have, and GM is working on a backup plan in the event demand for cars and trucks exceeds its current capacity.

    The Associated Press
reports that Reuss told the media that the solution to too much demand could be to reopen one of the General’s shuttered plants. Reuss specifically pointed to the company’s Spring Hill facility in Tennessee as a factory that could reopen to augment production, which makes sense in light of the fact that GM recently spent many millions of dollars to upgrade the plant to build the Chevrolet Traverse. Assuming GM can relight the fires at Spring Hill, that money would appear to be well spent, as Reuss reminded reporters that Spring Hill is flexible enough to build several different models.

GM has placed its Janesville, Wisconsin and Spring Hill plants on standby in the event that it needs more capacity when the U.S. auto industry begins to improve. Considering that new plants can cost over a billion dollars, we’re thinking that’s a pretty good idea.

  • Once Again, Google’s Customer Service Is Becoming An Issue

We’ve had a whole string of stories in the last few months about communication problems from Google — from users getting locked out of their documents to advertisers banned with no explanation or recourse to a blogger who went six months trying to get Google to turn back on a blog that it had shut down. I’ve heard from a few Google folks, noting that they recognize it’s an issue, and it’s something that some people within Google are trying to deal with. But given all of these problems on “smaller” issues, perhaps it’s no surprise that there’s been an outcry over the poor customer service people are receiving after purchasing Nexus One phones from the company.

Google does lots of things really well. But, clearly, customer service is not one of them. And while its massive success can hide (or at least minimize) the impact of such poor customer service, at some point it’s really going to begin to hurt, unless Google finally wakes up to the fact that when people have problems, they want to be able to reach out to a human being who will listen to them, hear what they have to say and (hopefully) help. Some have claimed that this is just not Google’s culture — and perhaps that’s the case, but at some point that cultural flaw may cause much larger headaches.
