  • Snooki Hair Sparks Style Trend

Height-challenged reality personality Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi has already established herself as a breakout star on MTV’s controversial reality hot mess Jersey Shore — and it appears the drunkard’s signature hairstyle is just as popular as her on-screen antics. In the ’90s, Jennifer Aniston’s perfect mane sent audiences scrambling to obtain “The Jennifer.” More recently, Blake Lively’s envy-inducing crop of blonde tresses began sparking requests for “The Blake.” Now top salons in Los Angeles and New York City report that they are receiving an unprecedented number of requests for “the poof” popularized by Snooki.

Already dubbed ”The Snook,” hair mavens say the heavily-teased look is most popular among short-statured woman like the 4-foot-9-inch reality star. You don’t have to fork over fistfuls of cash to look like Snook. The 22-year-old says fans can get her poofy look at home with the help of a little — make that a lot — of hairspray.

“If people don’t have hair like mine, I suggest teasing it a lot and then just put hair spray in and a clip. It should stay. I might do a video so the whole world knows how,” she said last month.

There will be place for EnerDel and A123, but will they make money or margins will be razor thin in order to secure contracts? Hitachi Develops Li-ion Battery Cell for PHEVs

Jan 13, 2010 15:51 Kouji Kariatsumari, Nikkei Electronics
The lithium-ion battery cell for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Its capacity is 25Ah.
Hitachi Vehicle Energy’s lithium-ion battery cells
Hitachi Ltd and Hitachi Vehicle Energy Ltd developed a lithium-ion battery cell that has a high energy density and a high output density for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
The energy density and output density of the new battery cell are 120Wh/kg and 2,400W/kg (SOC: 50%), respectively. While the output density is equivalent to that of an existing battery cell that the companies are producing in volume for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), the energy density is about twice as high.
The new battery cell measures 146 x 110 x 30mm and weighs 0.75kg. Its average voltage is 3.6V. Though the companies did not disclose the details, the positive and negative electrodes contain oxide including a manganese substance and a carbon material, respectively. They have already made a test production line and plan to ship samples to automakers in the spring of 2010.
Hitachi Vehicle Energy has been developing battery cells mainly for HEVs. The company defines the cylindrical cell that it is now mass-producing as the second-generation product.
Also, it plans to produce 300,000 units of the third-generation product per month for General Motors Corp’s mild hybrid vehicles and other vehicles in 2010. The third-generation product is a cylindrical cell that is 40mm in diameter and 92mm in length. Its current capacity, average voltage and output density are 4.4Ah, 3.6V and 3,000W/kg, respectively.
Furthermore, Hitachi Vehicle Energy has already developed the fourth-generation product, whose output density (4,500W/kg) is 1.5 times higher than that of the third-generation product and started shipping samples in the autumn of 2009. The fourth-generation product is an angular cell that has a high cooling performance. And its positive and negative electrodes are made by using a manganese substance and amorphous carbon.”
  • Group Demands REAL Investigation Into Mann by Paul Chesser, Spectator Blog

    Article Tags: ClimateGate, Paul Chesser

The Commonwealth Foundation in Harrisburg, Pa. does not trust Pennsylvania State University to investigate Climategate hockey sticker Michael Mann, because of the millions of dollars that his research brings to the university. The foundation today released a 12-page policy brief which addresses Mann’s Climategate emails, the significance of his role, and why the university has a conflict of interest in investigating him. Commonwealth held a press conference today at the state capitol about their report:

The hockey stick controversy and Climategate emails reveal that Michael Mann may have committed significant and intentional scientific misconduct, including improper data manipulation, inappropriately shielding research methods and results from others, and engaging in a number of forms of retaliation against those who publicly challenge his research results.

Were scientific misconduct a criminal matter, the aforementioned facts might be said to constitute “probable cause” for a search warrant. Analogously, these facts provide probable cause for an investigation into Mann’s conduct at PSU.

  • GetApp.com Aims To Become The Premier ‘App Store’ For Business Software

Today sees the public launch of GetApp.com, which aims to position itself as the leading vertical portal for software, SaaS and cloud-based business applications.

The premise of GetApp is fairly simple: offer (potential) professional IT services and software buyers a chance to browse and research business tools, give providers a low-cost way to be found in the directory, and guide both parties in getting the most out of the experience.

As a buyer, you can go to GetApp.com to find, compare and select from a wide range of business applications, organized into categories by IT and business need and by industry. The search functionality is pretty powerful and allows visitors to filter results down to a single vendor or enterprise-grade application.

Application providers / ISVs can use GetApp.com to have their tools listed and potentially reach qualified buyers online, either for free or with more options at a premium. This freemium approach and the lead generation part of the equation is key to GetApp’s business model, although there’s some PPC advertising baked into the site as well.

At launch, GetApp.com features over 2,200 applications across more than 300 categories.

GetApp.com is part of Eurocloud, the Microsoft BizSpark Partner Network and the Sun Startup Essential community. • Audi A8 hybrid at 2010 Geneva Motor Show

    Audi A8 2010

Following the Audi Q5 hybrid will be the new Audi A8 hybrid, to be presented at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The announcement of the new A8 hybrid was made at the Detroit auto show by Audi America president Johan de Nysschen, and is part of Audi’s ambitious target of selling one million models in the year 2010.

The same man famous for describing the Chevrolet Volt as a stupid car, has confirmed that Audi intends on saying no to those technologies which don’t represent real progress, and will therefore only focus on “full hybrid” cars, and not “mild hybrids” as in the case of the Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7-Series, for example. It seems the US is fast catching on to Europe’s focus on the environment, and it’s interesting to see the Q5 as the first Audi hybrid choice.

  • Disgusting: The GUMMI-X toy kit is an edible insect maker

    edible_insect

What Japanese toy maker Megahouse is offering here is truly disgusting: A toy kit that you can use to form edible insects made of juice and other liquids. The so-called GUMMI-X [JP] is geared towards teenage boys, but it has the potential to seriously freak out certain adults, too.

Users will be able to create a total of four exotic insects and such that they can put into their meals. Choose between the stag beetle, the Japanese rhinoceros beetle, the especially disgusting pill bug and the Procambarus clarkii, a freshwater crayfish. Other animals, a frog for example, are sold separately.

    edible_insect_2

Users can follow instructions that come with the GUMMI-X to pour liquids (for example cola or hot chocolate) into casting molds, wait a while for the gummy “insects” to stiffen and, ultimately, eat them.

This stag beetle, for example, is made primarily of coffee:

This is how a lunch box with one of our friends in it looks like:

The GUMMI-X will hit Japanese stores on February 1. The starter kit will cost around $40. Two extension kits (with two more casting molds each) will be available at the same time (price: $18 each).

Ask the Japan Trend Shop or Rinkya if you want to get the GUMMI-X but live outside Japan.

  • Chinese Response To Krugman: He’s A Doctor That Can Identify Cancer, But Doesn’t Know The Cure

    PaulKrugman-0909-1

A column in the English-launguage version of Global Times is being read as China’s official response to Paul Krugman, who has called out the country’s ostensibly destructive mercantilist policies.

The column, written by someone named Liu Ge starts off with a bit of a shot at Krugman:

Paul Krugman, the Nobel laureate in economics in 2008, is one of the US’ few star economists, known for brashly speaking out on many topics.

Whether his reputation will last has yet to be seen, but his New York Times opinion column gives him a powerful platform to speak from.

On the last day of 2009, he used his column to harshly criticize China’s economic policies and call for the US to be more confrontational.

Then he gets into the crux of the matter:

Krugman wrote in his book, The Conscience of a Liberal, “It’s only in retrospect that the political and economic environment of my youth stands revealed as a paradise lost, an exceptional episode in our nation’s history.”

The paradise referred by Krugman is the period from the end of World War II to the 1970s, also the time when he was growing up. His nostalgia is touching, but shouldn’t affect our policy judgements.

It’s true that during this time the US economy grew rapidly, wage levels rose sharply and the gap between the rich and the poor was signifi cantly reduced.

However, at that time billions of people worldwide had still not joined the wave of globalization. With globalization, the US has been forced into a very different kind of economy.

A general manufacturing industry can no longer survive there. When the US found that modern service sectors such as high-tech, communications and finance could not guarantee full employment, it was no longer possible to return to this earlier paradise.

Paul Krugman is like a doctor facing a patient with extensive cancer. He can diagnose the cause of what plagues the US, but he cannot provide a genuine cure.

    So who is correct here?

Well, we really can’t blame China for doing everything it can to rev its growth, through all manner of pro-manufacturing policies, including its maintenance of a permanently cheap yuan. The government there, presumably, has little ability to curb its growth at all.

But, to some extent, we also think Krugman is correct, not so much in slamming the Chinese, but in the fact that the current currency regime, whereby the dollar is king, and thus perpetually overvalued isn’t helpful to the global economy.

  • Once Destined for Bankruptcy, Adventrx Pharmaceuticals Sets New Course With Reformulated Drugs

    Adventrx logo
    Bruce V. Bigelow wrote:

Like something out of an old Clint Eastwood movie (where the cowboy left for dead is somehow resurrected), San Diego’s Adventrx Pharmaceuticals (AMEX: ANX) announced last week that it raised $19 million and filed a new drug application.

Shares of the biotech, which had no pulse a year ago, sprang to life. Adventrx stock that had been trading around 26 cents a share zoomed to 39 cents on the news, before falling back to 28 cents in extraordinarily heavy trading of nearly 85 million shares. Trading in Adventrx continues to be heavy, and I’ve been contacted by several shareholders who want more details about Adventrx, or who are urging me to write more. Yesterday, Adventrx closed at 47 cents a share, yet one recent e-mail enthusiastically predicts, “This one goes to $2.” A gamblers’ mentality surrounds Adventrx these days, and should serve as a warning to investors.

Nevertheless, the comeback at Adventrx has been remarkable. Brian Culley, who describes himself as the biotech’s “principal executive officer,” recounted the story for me recently, saying that a year ago Adventrx was destined for bankruptcy. He’ll no doubt revisit the story again in a presentation he’s set to give this afternoon at the OneMedForum Finance Conference in San Francisco.

Adventrx specializes in developing improved formulations of existing cancer treatments that address side-effects and other limitations associated with their safety and use. But Culley told me during a telephone interview, “The company ran into two pretty troubling matters.”  One stemmed from a decision in mid-2008 to discontinue the late-stage clinical trial of a “co-factor” drug that was intended to enhance the activity and reduce the toxicity of a widely used chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer. “They got equivocal data, and it basically failed,” Culley says. “That set the company on a pretty poor trajectory.” The other matter, Culley says, was that Adventrx was “hemorrhaging cash while running headlong into pretty hard economic times.”

By last March, Adventrx had laid off all but a handful of employees and announced plans to “substantially end” its drug development and business operations. A few weeks later, the company was down to just two employees—Culley, a vice president who had previously headed business development, and lawyer Patrick Kernan, who assumed the duties of chief financial officer as well as Adventrx general counsel.

Culley says the two Adventrx survivors turned to …Next Page »

  • Susan Boyle Botox

Watch out guys, Susan Boyle has “discovered” Botox and she’s armed with the power of makeup.

Spinster-turned-talent show sensation Susan Boyle, 48, says she’s lost weight, got her teeth whitened and discovered the wonders of Botox since shooting to the top of the Billboard charts with the release of her debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, last year. While SuBo still considers herself an “ugly duckling,” she’s learned to take more pride in her appearance, she tells Italy’s Grazia.

“I have a new hairdresser and I have discovered Botox, as well as getting my teeth whitened. I’ve lost weight for my own self esteem. It’s all been very important. I was never able to buy myself shoes or nice dresses or go to the hairdresser,” she says. “I have the closet of a star. Before I had to save and recycle clothes – for example, the outfit I wore on Britain’s Got Talent I had bought for my brother’s wedding.”

When asked if she would like to have a boyfriend, Susan replied: “That would be nice. To be honest, I have had a few offers but at the moment I am just so busy. For the time being, I have my cat Pebbles to keep me company, he is the most reliable companion.”

If you happened to be in New York City on Sunday you might have noticed a lot of people walking around without their pants on. That’s because it was NYC’s ninth-annual No Pants Day.

Men and women sans pants descended upon the subway systems of New York and other major cities as part of the annual event organized by the group Improv Everywhere.

The group said the event went off without a hitch and that about 3,000 people participated. Riders met at points around the city and converged on Union Square. This all happened while the high temperature for the day was 28 degrees!

There were simultaneous No Pants rides in 43 other cities around the world in 16 countries.

While there isn’t video available yet from this year’s ride, here’s a vid from the No Pants ride in 2008 to give you a sense of what you missed:

  • Netflix’s Chances of a Nintendo Deal Really Were “Excellent” [MediaMemo]

mario movieDon’t accuse Reed Hastings of tipping his hand. At least not all the way.

Last Friday, at an onstage interview I conducted with the Netflix CEO, I asked him when his company might start offer streaming video for Nintendo’s Wii game console, as it does for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (MSFT) and Sony’s Playstation3 (SNE).

The chances were “excellent”, Hastings said. “These things have a natural rhythm, and these are things that I think will work out over time.”

Another way Hastings could have answered the question, if he wanted to be a little more forthright: “It’s a done deal”.

Netflix and Nintendo are formally announcing the pact today, and Wii owners will be able to stream movies to their TV sets via the console sometime this spring, the companies say.

It’s an obvious move for both parties, but it’s particularly good one for Netflix (NFLX), since it offers the company a chance to introduce itself to some 26 million Wii owners — more than double the company’s 11 million subscriber base.

Netflix is slowly transforming itself from a company that mails DVDs to customers to one that streams video directly to their homes. Hasting says that 50 percent of its customers have tried its streaming service option, and game console owners have been particularly receptive.

  • Globalfoundries completes Chartered merger to create chip manufacturing giant

globalfoundriesChip makers Globalfoundries and Chartered have combined operations to form a semiconductor contract manufacturing powerhouse.

The combination is a culmination of the companies’ ambition to create globaly foundry, or a contract manufacturing firm that makes chips which are designed by other companies. The combined company will compete against market leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., not to mention companies with their own in-house factories such as Intel.

A series of events paved the way for the combination. First, in 2008, the government of Abu Dhabi bought a majority stake in the chip manufacturing business of Advanced Micro Devices. AMD became a chip design firm, while the manufacturing operation was renamed Globalfoundries. Then, last September, the Abu Dhabi entity, Advanced Technology Investment Co. (ATIC), agreed to buy Singapore’s Chartered for $3.9 billion.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Globalfoundries will now have 10,000 employees across 12 locations in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The company will have about $2.75 billion in revenues in 2009, and its 150 customers include many of the world’s biggest chip making and chip design firms.

The company will have leading edge manufacturing from the AMD side of the house, and it will be making advanced chips for AMD. The Chartered side of the house will serve customers with more mature factories, said Kevin Meyer, vice president of marketing and alliances, in an interview. Investors have pledged to put more than $10 billion into the combined companies, which need the capital to build chip factories in places such as New York, Singapore, and Dresden, Germany. The company has three big factories, which can make chips on wafers that are 300 mm in diameter, either in the works or under construction. And it has six more older factories.

In Saratoga County, N.Y., the company has broken ground on a factory that could require a $4.6 billion investment when it is fully built out. That factory is expected to create 1,400 jobs. Full told, the factories will be able to produce 425 million wafers a month by 2015, said Tom Sonderman, vice president of manufacturing systems. A wafer is sliced into many different chips, and so the factory capacity could be in the billions of chips per month.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES Finalizes Integration, Emerges as World’s First Truly Global Foundry

GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Chartered combine under one brand to compete for market leadership as a full-service foundry company

Sunnyvale, Calif. – January 13, 2010 – GLOBALFOUNDRIES today announced it has officially integrated operations with Chartered Semiconductor and started functioning as one company under the GLOBALFOUNDRIES brand. The announcement marks the emergence of the new GLOBALFOUNDRIES—the world’s first full-service semiconductor foundry with a truly global manufacturing and technology footprint across Asia, Europe and the United States.

“As the world’s leading chip design companies face increasing pressure to push the boundaries of innovation, they need a full-service foundry partner with the ability to invest and sustain an aggressive leading-edge technology roadmap while offering a full breadth of services,” said Doug Grose, chief executive officer of GLOBALFOUNDRIES. “Thanks to the vision of our investors and months of dedicated work by teams across the globe, we have now created a new global company that leads the foundry market in advanced technology with unparalleled proximity to our customers and access to the world’s best talent.”

The combined company employs approximately 10,000 people around the world, anchored by headquarters in Silicon Valley and advanced manufacturing operations in Singapore; Dresden, Germany; and a new leading-edge fab under construction in Saratoga County, New York. These sites are supported by a global network of R&D, design enablement, and customer support in Singapore, China, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The new GLOBALFOUNDRIES immediately takes its position as one of the top semiconductor foundries in the world, with 2009 revenues to date for GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Chartered in excess of $2 billion. GLOBALFOUNDRIES launches with more than 150 customers across the semiconductor ecosystem, with plans to deepen existing relationships and to aggressively pursue new customers. Current customers include many of the world’s top fabless and fab-lite companies, such as AMD, Qualcomm, STMicro, IBM, and Toshiba.

“The entire premise of the foundry business is changing,” said Dan Hutcheson, CEO of VLSI Research. “Foundry customers have made it clear that they are looking for deep collaboration with their foundry partners as opposed to a contract manufacturing service. With its history as part of a top Integrated Device Manufacturer (IDM) operating at the leading edge of technology, GLOBALFOUNDRIES is well positioned to drive fundamental transformation in the foundry business model.”

GLOBALFOUNDRIES currently has five 200 mm fabs and one 300 mm fab in Singapore, as well as one leading-edge 300 mm fab complex in Dresden, Germany. To meet the demands of a growing customer base, the company has an aggressive capacity build-out plan, including expansion of Fab 1 in Dresden and Fab 7 in Singapore, as well as construction of a new leading-edge 300mm facility in Saratoga County, New York. The New York facility, which will be renamed as Fab 8, is on track to begin ramping initial production in 2012.

With these plans in place, global leading-edge capacity is expected to expand to 1.6 million 300mm wafers annually by 2014. This will be supplemented by 2.2 million 200mm wafers annually, offering customers the full spectrum of foundry technology from mainstream to the leading edge, for a total of 5.8 million 200mm equivalents.

“Until now, the world’s largest fabless, fablite and integrated manufacturers have had no real alternative for an end-to-end manufacturing partner,” said Chia Song Hwee, chief operating officer of GLOBALFOUNDRIES. “This new company has an incredible opportunity in front of us to not just offer an alternative, but become the preferred supplier for many of the world’s top chip design companies.

With advanced technology leadership, an aggressive capacity roadmap and a robust set of mainstream technologies and foundry services we are well equipped to compete and win against any other foundry in the industry.”

The new GLOBALFOUNDRIES brings a broad array of leading edge technology capabilities and services to market. The company is the foundry industry leader in time-to-volume on 40/45nm technology and expects to repeat this accomplishment with 32nm and “Gate First” High-K Metal Gate technology. The company embraces a collaborative R&D approach that also extends to packaging, IP solutions, and design enablement, built on what the company calls its “Virtual IDM” approach.
