On the heels of Chevy’s mobile app blitz for the Volt, BMW followed up by showing off their very own iPhone app. Chevy has one leg up on BMW as the Volt app is available for the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android. But there is one flaw, you can’t yet buy a Volt…BMW, FTW!

The BMW M Power Meter Application uses the iPhone’s native accelerometer to measure speed, acceleration and your acceleration to a specific speed. But the best part, you don’t have to own a BMW to use it–and it’s free! How often can you say that about something from BMW?

  • Robbie Bach: “We’ve been … too focused on how many devices we could have and not focused enough … (on) the base quality of those devices …”

Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division, spoke to Financial Post today about Microsoft’s X-box, Zune and Windows Mobile business.

Speaking about Microsoft’s relationship with Windows Mobile OEMs and the amount of input Microsoft had in quality control of Windows Mobile smartphones, he said:

A You have a dichotomy: choice versus control. When you go out and look at the wall of PCs, part of what makes that wall of PCs is that the [manufacturers] have the freedom to create what they want to create and that choice is tremendously valuable to consumers. The reason it works in the PC space is because early on we did choose to exercise some management of what makes a PC, and there are standards that were developed – largely by us – but with some other people, and so Windows 7 works great on lots of devices. I will tell you if there’s a place where we haven’t done as good work is in the mobile space. We’ve been, in a way, too focused on how many devices we could have and not focused enough on making sure that the base quality of those devices is very strong. So one of the things we are working on with our [manufacturing] partners is ensuring that those experiences are consistent and work great and that the base line that you start with is always rock solid.

Speaking to the Zune part of the business, he once again denied Microsoft was making a Zune phone, but said it was clearly inevitable that the technology would make its way into a phone itself.

But it’s very clear that the portable music and video marketplace will end up being part of the phone. So that creates a new opportunity for everyone to introduce those things into phones, and the thing that has held it back has been battery life. And that’s changing. Screen resolution has also been holding it back a bit and technology is catching up on all those things. Zune HD isn’t that far away from being a phone and no, we’re not doing a phone, so please don’t start those rumours. But from a technology perspective, it’s not far away.

From other rumours we already understand future Windows Mobile 7 devices will have a lot more rigorous quality control and we would certainly be very surprised to see the new OS ship without Zune Marketplace integration.

  • Wanna Tether Your Nexus One?

So you got your Nexus One this week and now you want to tether that new T-Mobile 3G speed.  Is it possible?  Of course it is.  But not without rooting your handset.  The guys over at (where else?) XDA forums have released an “add-ons pack” for rooted Nexus One phones which allows for both wireless and wired (USB) tethering.  Also featured in this custom kernel are Busybox, Nano 2.09, powertop, dropbear.

Don’t forget kids, taking things like this into your own hands can result in some ugly results.  If you’re not entirely sure you’re ready to do it,  our advice is to wait.  For those of you with rooting/hacking experience, you can head to XDA forums and follow along.

  • Will Ram get new models like Chrysler’s other brands?

    Ram Geavy duty

It wouldn’t make any sense for Fiat to break Ram into its own brand and then not do anything to showcase it. This is just speculation for the moment, but Ram’s first steps into the spotlight could be with two trucks called the Laramie Prospector and Laramie Western Sky.

Those names come from a list of monikers Chrysler has trademarked for new models. Others, like the Chrysler 300 S8 and Dodge Nitro Detonator, we’ll get up close and personal with at the Detroit Auto Show. Those Laramie models, though, haven’t been mentioned anywhere or revealed on any Ram trucks yet. Of the five Ram trims available, Laramie is the highest, but there are no special editions within it. The Prospector and Western Sky could change that, and we’ll be looking out for them next week in Detroit.

Friends, I would post some random pictures from Singapore,Malaysia and Indonesia mainly S’pore. Got inspired by other friends posting their wonderful pictures. Won’t look as good though but I’d try to share you my best. Let me start with the pictures from Singapore first.

    Singapore Flyer… World’s largest observation wheel @ 165m

    Marina Bay Skyline…

Iconic skyline of Singapore…Taken almost 3 yrs back, missing some of the newest buildings. The 3 tallest buildings in the picture are the tallest structures in Singapore each standing 283m high (height limit for the vicinity) which are Repuplic plaza,OUB Bank and UOB Bank from left to right.

Some Indian Flavours…Serangoon Rd.,the heart of Little India towards Selegie Rd. Glass-clad building @ the left is then Tekka Mall. It was in news in the recent past for removing the traditional name ‘Tekka’ and re-christened as ‘The Verge’ after renovation. Dissent especially from Indian Community. See the Jay walking!!! Pity quite common in this area.

  • Why Tech May Rebound in 2010

“It doesn’t feel like a recession here.” Over the past few months, I’ve heard several people who either visited or moved to the San Francisco Bay Area make that comment. The effects of the Great Recession are still painful in many regions of the country, but the relative health of the tech industry has left many in Silicon Valley and San Francisco feeling they dodged a deadly bullet.

While the economy’s longer-term health remains as uncertain as ever, the outlook for tech is — for the next several months, at least — getting brighter. The biggest reason is that companies feel more comfortable spending on new technology, as well as on online ads. But consumers not left jobless by the recession are also spending more when they see bargains.

Take Amazon. Before the holiday season, most analysts expected the discount-happy retailer to enjoy robust growth. But they underestimated how robust. ChannelAdvisor puts the rise in Amazon’s same-store sales in January at a whopping 74 percent. Amazon, which doesn’t share much data on holiday sales, did note that peak day orders increased 51 percent over the same month in 2008.

Online retail sales in November and December increased by 4 percent year-over-year, and some analysts are looking for a growth rate above 10 percent for all of 2010. Amazon will continue to be a prime beneficiary of that growth. In the past months, nine analysts have upgraded their estimates for Amazon’s full-year 2009 earnings and 11 have increased their 2010 outlook.

Online advertising is also rebounding after being flat or down for most of last year. According to Kaufman Brothers, about 25 percent of media consumption is on the web, vs. 10 percent of advertising spending. That gap will close over time, helped in part by the lure of more targeted advertising. But as with e-commerce, the growth in online ads will favor leaders such as Google and Yahoo.

Google’s ad revenue will get a boost as mobile advertising increases. Its purchase of AdMob gives it more than 20 percent of the mobile ad market. But there’s also growth expected in display ads as well. J.P. Morgan said display ad spending will rise 11 percent in 2010 after falling 5 percent last year, a trend that will help Yahoo in particular. Carol Bartz had the thankless task of reviving Yahoo (she gives herself a B- so far), and the fruits of her work will be more apparent this year.

As for Microsoft, it’s releasing new enterprise-focused products just as companies are starting to feel more comfortable spending on technology again. Revenue for Windows 7 should remain strong, while new versions of Windows Server and the Office Suite are coming. Microsoft is pushing these under the motto of “the new efficiency” – intended to resonate with cost-cutting companies.

The drive for efficiency is central to the tech industry beyond this summer, when the outlook again becomes murky. Job cuts coupled with new technology is pushing the productivity rate back up to levels not seen since the previous recession. Optimists argue that higher productivity will lead companies to hire more workers, spurring a strong recovery in the U.S. economy.

But it’s also possible that other factors could draw the economy back into recession. The housing market is still ailing, and corporate spending may slow now that inventories are being restocked. The risk of being in a relatively healthy sector like technology is it can bring complacency. The companies that are enjoying a rebound today may be caught of guard if the economy stalls again later in 2010.
