  • Disney Half Marathon 2010 Live

The Disney Marathon attracts more than 100,000 people every year, with nearly 24,000 people running in the full marathon alone.

Experts said dressing in layers is key. As runners got hot, they started taking off a layer at a time. All disregarded clothes along the course will be donated to charity.
A record 55,500 athletes have registered for the variety of events that make up the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. In 2009 the Walt Disney World Marathon was the eighth largest in the nation and the second largest combination race weekend. The main event – Sunday’s 26.2-mile journey through Disney’s four major theme parks – starts at 5:40 a.m. near Epcot.

Runners can look forward to VIP treatment as new “More Magic” options have been added. A pre-race pasta party and a post-race private celebration are new ticketed events available to those in attendance. On Thursday, Jan. 7, the Pasta in the Park Party at Epcot will give runners and their friends and family a chance to “carb load” before the race and see a special viewing of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” a nighttime fireworks display. After the marathon on Sunday, the chance to ride select attractions and unwind with a live DJ and Disney characters is available when Disney’s Hollywood Studios hosts a private Victory Lap Celebration.

The VIP Race Retreat package is available again this year offering special race-day upgrades for participants and their friends and family, such as exclusive meet and greets with Disney characters and pre-registration for next year’s marathon.

  • Christianity Is Bullshit, Christianity Is Bullshit Information

Google has lost their minds. The living God of the universe will judge accordingly and someone will be held accountable. May god forgive you and your hatred.

I’m pretty sure people have sent me something on this before in the past, and maybe we’ve covered it, but if we have let me just reiterate what I think is obviously going on here: Google is scared.

Because even if the suggestions are automatically generated based on a proprietary algorithm someone could get killed for suggesting that “Islam is Bullshit”. Which is pretty good motivation for overriding the system.

Google this. Type this in Google “Christianity is…” and see what Google will suggest. It will suggest as the first option this: Christianity is Bullshit. Try it.

Now try “Islam is…” What does Google say? Nothing. There is no suggestion at all. What is this Google? Why is there “Christianity is Bullshit” but no “Islam is bullshit” in your search engine?

  • Katy Perry Pregnant?

Katy Perry has sparked speculation that she is expecting her first child with fiance Russell Brand after dropping several small hints of pregnancy on Twitter this week.

The 25-year-old singer and the British comic confirmed their engagement earlier this week.

Just a few days ago, she Tweeted: “Let me tell you 2010 is BUMPIN!” On Friday, Katy furthered fueled the rumors when she sent a public message to Brand, saying: “i heard ur prego-ed.”

Katy and Russell, 34, have been dating since September. Russell proposed during a religious ceremony in India over the holidays.

  • Android This Week: Google’s Phone Plans and Some Non-Phone Moves

There is still substantial buzz surrounding this week’s launch of Google’s Android-based phone, the Nexus One, which Om has found to be the best Android phone on the market to date.  And Andy Rubin, VP of engineering at Google, weighed in on Google’s strategy, making clear that — among other things — more Google phones from various manufacturers are on the way. We also took note this week of the potential disruption that could come from Google’s web store, which is targeted to put Android-based superphones and more in users’ hands. In addition, we noted comments from Google Open Source Program Manager Chris DiBona as to how the company intends to preserve a level playing field (which may not be perfectly level) for phone manufacturers and Android app developers.

Of course, Android was all over this week’s CES show in Las Vegas, evidence of the ongoing Androidification of everything. There were Android tablet devices from Dell, Motorola and others, found in a variety of form factors. MIPS also showed an Android-based set-top box, one of several types of consumer electronics devices that the company wants developed around the OS.  MIPS is joined on the Android bandwagon by fellow chip company ARM, semiconductor design firms like Aricent and Mentor Graphics, and others. Meanwhile Freescale Semiconductor is working on an Android-based netbook design, and HP and Qualcomm showcased an Android netbook

Among Android-based phones at the CES show, Motorola got a lot of attention with its Backflip QWERTY-keyboard-based Android phone. You can actually navigate the phone with a finger on the backside.  Taps and double-taps are supported, as is mouse-pad style navigation.  AT&T also made waves at CES, when it announced that it will support five Android handsets this year.

The Android action at CES made clear that the operating system is moving beyond just phones, and is having a widespread impact on handset makers, carriers and developers. It’s hard to believe that only nine months ago, Android seemed completely stalled.

  • Jinke announces 6 and 9-inch SiPix panel e-readers

We’re certainly not wanting for e-readers this week, although we are definitely wanting for one that’s compelling enough to shell out good money for — which is fine, because company’s all over God’s green Earth seem to be working overtime to give us one. Take Jinke — the company’s switched from E Ink to SiPix panels for the A6 and A9 readers, both of which are planned to sport multitouch, 16 levels of grayscale, WiFi a/b/g, and optional 3G — as well as the usual compliment of formats (FB2, EPUB, PDF, most image formats, and MP3). The former is a 6-inch (600 x 800) device with 2GB of storage, an SD slot, and an accelerometer. The Jinke A9 features a 9-inch (1024 x 768) panel, and up to 4GB storage. Both the A6 ($275) and the A9 ($330) should be available in March.

Jinke announces 6 and 9-inch SiPix panel e-readers originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jan 2010 08:01:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

  • CES: GestureTek Launches a New Camera Tracking Engine for Windows Mobile

Video above shows the technology in action on a big screen

GestureTek announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that it is launching a brand new engine that allows Windows® Mobile publishers and developers to integrate motion and object tracking into their gesture-control games and applications.

GestureTek’s new momo(TM) for Windows Mobile uses a mobile device’s camera to track objects and motion within the camera’s field of view. The engine defines interfaces for two trackers – the Motion tracker which determines interaction by following specific movement and the Mosaic tracker which tracks objects, including faces and hands. They provide developers with a vast array of options when developing gesture control applications.

"Momo makes possible groundbreaking mobile games that can respond to hand motions over menu items and even track the position of the user’s head," says Yoshi Kumagai, GestureTek’s Senior Vice President of Mobile.

GestureTek’s software can be delivered over the air or embedded directly into many camera-enabled devices, with no special hardware or design updates required. It is an easy to implement software solution that makes adding gesture control more cost-effective for manufacturers.

Once the software is enabled, users can shake, rock or roll their phone to play games, answer calls, shuffle playlists, navigate maps, scroll, pan, zoom, turn pages and even browse the web – all without pressing a button or touching the screen.

With Momo users can control the action using specific hand or body gestures – with no movement of the device required.

GestureTek software has widespread applications in many consumer electronics products. Many developers are already using GestureTek software to bring immersive, gesture-based interactivity to a variety of platforms, including PCs, laptops and toys.

"Greater accessibility to GestureTek’s gesture recognition software is significant for developers in the mobile and consumer electronics space," says Vincent John Vincent, President of GestureTek. "Developers now have the ability to create gesture-control games and applications for multiple platforms and to develop for multiple mobile devices, including those with hardware-based gesture control solutions (such as accelerometers) and software-based gesture control solutions."

GestureTek software is available on millions of mobile devices worldwide, including on NTT DoCoMo phones in Japan, and is used in more than 200 mobile applications. Selected handsets enabled with GestureTek’s software include models from Sony Ericsson, Nokia, NEC, HTC, Motorola, Samsung and LG.

  • The Big Cube, The Big Cube Information

Hollywood is gearing up for their annual awards, but there is a real problem in a fundamental part of filmmaking — a problem many of us have seen for some time. Good writing is scarce. And when you add in a list of rules so byzantine and twisted, the nominees for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adaptation from another work, turn very odd. One example: the critical acclaim for “Inglorious Basterds” is likely to earn a Best Picture nominee, but Quentin Tarantino won’t get a script nod because he is not a member of the Writer’s Guild. Then there’s writer Nick Hornby, whose movie “An Education” is gaining lots of praise and nominations, but since he belonged to the ‘wrong chapter” of the Guild, he is not eligible for an Oscar nod. The rules in place are making a shambles of the potential race for “the best” and a fine write-up at Cinematical details how everyone is being disqualified.

Tonight, film fiends will want to stay up late for a chance to see movie star Lana Turner in her one and only wacky LSD trip motion picture. Turner Classic Movies will air “The Big Cube”, made in 1969, and certainly a vivid snapshot of … hmm, well, a snapshot of Weirdness, in a groovy sexy ’60s kind of way.

It airs at 2 a.m. and is followed by another drug/romance tale, “I Love You Alice B. Toklas”. But since The Big Cube barely was released to theaters and just hit DVD last year, that is the one to watch.

Turner plays an aging actress (what a stretch) who has a daughter who speaks with an eastern European accent for some reason, and the daughter falls under the seductive allure of a Bad Man (George Chakiris from “West Side Story”) and pretty soon murder, orgies and crazed LSD trips fill the movie screen. Here’s the trailer for the movie (all nudity is genteelly blocked):
